Four Mystery Plays
GA 14
The Soul's Probation (Written 1911)

Scene 11

The same meditation-chamber as in Scene 2. Maria, Ahriman.

Ahriman:
So Benedictus spun a cunning web
Of thought, whose pattern thou hast followed out,
And now thou art fast bound in error's toils.
Thornasius too and e'en Capesius
Are victims of this same illusion's spell.
For at the same time as thine eyes beheld
This long-past earthly life—so too did theirs.
Henceforward 'tis in that time thou dost seek
To find the causes of thy present life;
But only error can be error's fruit
If thou art ready to allow thyself
To make the path of duty here and now
Depend upon such vain imaginings.
That Benedictus took from thine own brain,
And placed these visions in an earlier age,
Thine own self's knowledge can quite clearly prove.
Thou sawst people of this present time
But little changed from those of former days.
Woman thou sawst as woman, man as man,
And all their attributes were similar;
Thou canst not therefore any longer doubt
That what thou didst transfer to time's dim past
By spirit-vision, far from being truth
Was but the vain delusion of thy soul.

Maria:
In thee I see the sire of all deceit
Yet know I too thou oft dost speak the truth.
And any one who chose to set aside
All counsel that might reach him through thy words
To utmost error soon would fall a prey.
And as illusion wears the mask of truth
The better to ensnare the souls of men,
So 'tis but easy for a man to yield
Thereto, by trying like a coward to slink
Past every place where error might be hid.
More than illusion finds the soul in thee
For in the Spirit of Deceit doth live
The force that gives mankind discernment true.
I therefore shall oppose thee without fear.
Thou hast attacked that portion of my soul
Which must at all times keep the most alert,
If I weigh all the evidence which thou
In clever calculation hast advanced,
'Twould seem that only pictures from my brain
Have been transferred into an earthly past.
Yet would I ask thee if thy wisdom can
Unlock the door of every earthly age?

Ahriman:
No beings live in any spirit-realm
Which set themselves to thwart me when I seek
Admission into any earthly age.

Maria:
The lofty Powers of Fate have chosen well
In setting thee to be their enemy.
Thou dost encourage all thou wouldst restrain.
Thou bringest freedom to the souls of men
When thou dost penetrate to their soul-depths.
From thee originate the powers of thought
Whence knowledge springs with all its vain deceits
But which can also guide man to the truth.
In Spirit-land there is but one domain
Where may be forged the sword that bids thee flee
As soon as thou dost set thine eyes thereon.
It is a realm in which the souls of men
Do gather knowledge through their reason's powers,
Which knowledge they will afterwards transmute
To Spirit-wisdom. If I have the strength
To forge the word of truth into that sword,
That very moment thou must flee from hence.
So hearken well, thou sire of all deceit;
If truth triumphant I proclaim to thee:—
In earthly evolution there are times
In which the ancient forces slowly die,
And dying, see the growth of newer ones.
At such a cyclic point my friends and I
Did find ourselves drawn close by spirit-bonds
Whilst seeking out our former lives on earth.
True Spirit-men were working at that time,
United in a brotherhood of souls
Whose aims were sought in mysticism's realm.
Now, at such seasons certain tendencies
Are carefully implanted in men's souls,
Which need a long time for full ripening.
In their next life on earth such men as these
Must show strong traces of their previous life.
At these times, many men will be reborn
In their succeeding lives as men—so too
Women as women often re-appear.
At that time also is the interval
Shorter than usual 'twixt two earthly lives.
To understand aright these cyclic points
Thou lackest power, and therefore canst not yet
Survey their growth with eyes from error free.
Call but to mind the time when last we met
In temples of that Spirit-brotherhood
Then thou spak'st words of flattery, intent
To work upon my vanity of soul.
I recollect this time; and draw therefrom
The strength how to oppose myself to thee.

(Ahriman withdraws with reluctant mien. Thunder.)

Defeated he has had to leave the spot
Which Benedictus hath so often blessed.
But unto me hath been made manifest
How lightly souls may into error fall
Who give themselves unto the Spirit-voice
Without due heed, and shun the safer ways.
The Enemy indeed hath mighty power
Life's contradictions to accentuate
And thus rob souls of their security.
He must fall silent when the Light appears
That from the fount of Wisdom issuing
Doth bring full clearness to our spirit-sight.

Curtain, while Maria is still in the room

Elftes Bild

(Dasselbe Meditationszimmer wie im zweiten Bilde. Maria, Ahriman.)

Ahriman
in graue Vorzeit dir zurückverlegtest.

Maria:
Drum will ich mich dir frei entgegenstellen.
Ergriffen hast du mich an jenem Seelenteil,
der wachsam stets sich selbst bewahren muß.
Erwäg’ ich alle Gründe, welche du
mir eben klug berechnend vorgehalten,
so scheint nur eignen Hirnes Bildgestalt
in frühe Erdentage hinversetzt.

Ahriman:
In keinem Geistesreiche leben Wesen,
die sich mir feindlich dann entgegenstellen,
wenn ich in Erdenzeiten Einlaß brauche.

Maria:
Die hohen Schicksalsmächte haben weise
in dir den Widersacher sich bestellt;
so wirst du diesen Ort verlassen müssen.
in welchen alte Kräfte langsam sterben
in Menschenseelen sorgsam eingepflanzt,
die lange Zeit zur vollen Reife brauchen.
Die Menschen müssen dann im nächsten Leben
noch Eigenschaften aus dem frühern zeigen.
Es werden viele Männer solcher Zeiten
in einem nächsten Leben wieder Männer;
in tiefster Seele schmeichelnd lösen sollten.

Scene Eleven

(The same meditation room as in the second picture. Mary, Ahriman.)

Ahriman
Benedictus has spun the threads of thought
with cunning, which you have followed.
They have well and truly ensnared you in error.
Thomasius and Capesius too,
they are victims of the same delusion.
At the same time as yours, their gaze fell
on the life of long-past earthly days.
Since then, you have been searching for the existence in that time
that preceded your present.
You will only show error from error
if you allow yourself to be determined by it
to outline duties on the earthly path
that are the result of your delusional knowledge.
That Benedictus only took the images from your brain
and placed them in early times:
you can clearly find this out from your own knowledge.
You saw the people of your own days
hardly different from those of old.
You saw men as men and women as women,
and their characteristics were also similar.
There can be no doubt in your mind
that you did not transfer truth, but only the delusion
of your own soul with the mind's eye
back to gray antiquity.

Mary:
I see you as the father of all deception,
but I also know that you often speak the truth.
And anyone who would reject every piece of advice
that he can receive through your words
would have to become the victim of the gravest error.
Just as delusion uses the mask of truth
to safely ensnare human souls,
so man can easily surrender to deception,
if he only wanted to sneak past all sources of error
in cowardly fear.
It is not only delusion that the soul owes to you:
That power also comes from the spirit of deception,
which gives people sound judgment.
Therefore, I will freely oppose you.
You have seized me by that part of my soul
that must always remain vigilant to protect itself.
When I consider all the reasons you
have just cleverly presented to me,
only the images of my own mind
transposed to the early days of Earth appear.
But I ask you, does your wisdom
open doors for all earthly times?

Ahriman:
There are no beings in any spiritual realm
who oppose me with hostility
when I need access to earthly times.

Mary:
The high powers of destiny have wisely
appointed you as their adversary;
you promote everything you want to hinder.
You bring the power of freedom to human souls
when you penetrate into the depths of their souls.
From you spring the powers of thought,
which are the source of illusory knowledge,
but also the guides of the sense of truth.
There is only one realm in the spirit world
where the sword can be forged,
at the sight of which you must disappear.
It is the realm in which human souls
form knowledge from the powers of the mind,
and then transform it into spiritual wisdom.
And if, at this moment, I can correctly
forge the word of truth into a sword,
then you will have to leave this place.
So listen, father of deception,
whether I speak the victorious truth before you.
There are times in earthly existence
when old forces slowly die
and, as they die, the new ones already grow.
At such a turning point in time, I
and my friends found ourselves united in spirit,
as they sought their earlier earthly lives.
At that time, true spiritual people were at work,
who united themselves in a brotherhood of souls,
and drew their goals from the realm of mysticism.
In such earthly days, seeds are carefully planted
in human souls,
which need a long time to reach full maturity.
In their next life, people must then
still display characteristics from their previous life.
Many men of such times
become men again in their next life;
and many women become women again.
The length of time is then also shorter than that which otherwise lies between lives.
You lack the sure eye for such turning points in time,
the sure eye. Therefore, you are unable to
overlook their becoming without error.
Remember how we met
in the house of that spiritual brotherhood:
and you spoke words that were meant to flatter
the self-will in my deepest soul.
The memory of that time now gives
me the strength to oppose you.

He had to leave the place that
Benedictus often received blessings.
But it has been revealed to me in a wonderful way,
how easily error can afflict souls
who open themselves to the voice of the spirit
without vigilance, and who avoid the safe paths.
The adversary has great powers
to emphasize the contradictions of life,
and thus rob souls of their security.
He must be silenced when the light appears,
which shines from the sources of wisdom themselves,
and gives brightness to spiritual insights.

(Curtain falls while Mary is still in the room.)
