Calendar of the Soul

ST. JOHN'S TIDE

Northern Hemisphere
Week 12

The radiant beauty of the world
Compels my inmost soul to free
God-given powers of my nature
That they may soar into the cosmos,
To take wing from myself
And trustingly to seek myself
In cosmic light and cosmic warmth.

Southern Hemisphere
Week 38

The spirit child within my soul
I feel freed of enchantment.
In heart-high gladness has
The holy cosmic Word engendered
The heavenly fruit of hope,
Which grows rejoicing into worlds afar
Out of my being's godly roots.

—Translation by Ruth and Hans Pusch

The Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount

The first lecture presents a profound interpretation of the Commandments against the background of the evolution of consciousness. The second deals with the Sermon on the Mount as a penetrating expression of “the fulfillment of the times.” Steiner reveals deep truths in the Beatitudes regarding Christ's teaching for the physical, etheric, and astral bodies, the sentient, rational, and consciousness souls, as well as for future human developments.

The Ten Commandments, a lecture, was given in Berlin, November 16, 1908. It is included in Geisteswissenschaftliche Menschenkunde (Bn/GA 107 in the Bibliographic Survey, 1961), and was translated from the German by Frieda Solomon and Mel Belenson.

The Sermon on the Mount, a lecture, was given in Munich, March 15, 1910. It is included in Das Ereignis der Christus-Erscheinung in der ätherischen Welt (Bn/GA 118 in the Bibliographic Survey, 1961), and was translated from the German by Frieda Solomon.
