9. The Moon Nature in Man

Again and again in these lectures we have been able to show how the Genesis account, rightly interpreted, has corroborated the findings of clairvoyant investigation. There remain a number of points still to clear up in this regard. The first thing will be to show with still greater precision the point of time at which the Genesis account falls in terms of spiritual scientific findings as to the evolution of our earth. I have already said that I put the beginning of Genesis at the time when the sun and the earth were about to separate, but we shall have to go more closely into this.

Those of you who have heard some of my earlier lectures, and also those who have studied the description of earth evolution in my Occult Science, will remember what great importance I attached to two significant moments in this evolution. The first was the separation of the sun from the earth. This was a very important event. It had to take place at some time, for had the two cosmic bodies remained united, as in the first stage of earth existence, the course of human evolution could not have given to man his true earthly meaning. All that we include in the word “sun”—thus not only the elementary or physical constituents in the body of the sun, but also the spiritual Beings who belong to it—had to withdraw from the earth, or, if you prefer, had to extrude the earth, because, had those Beings remained united with it, their forces would have worked too strongly for man's welfare. They had to mitigate their forces by removing themselves from the terrestrial scene and working upon it from without. We are therefore concerned with a point of time when a number of Beings transfer the scene of their operations to a distance, so as to moderate their influence on the development of both man and animal. From a certain point of time the earth is left to itself, and, because its finer, more spiritual forces have withdrawn with the sun, undergoes a certain coarsening. But man, such as he has become through the Saturn, Sun and Moon evolutions, still remained for a time with the earth. It was only very exalted Beings who withdrew with the sun and found their scene of activity outside.

After this separation, the earth still had within it all the substances and forces which go to make up the present moon. Man therefore was exposed to conditions which were much grosser than earth conditions proper later became, for the substance of the moon is very crass, as it were. One result was that, after the separation of the sun from the earth, the earth forces became ever more moonlike, ever denser. Another, that man himself was now exposed to the danger of wilting away, of becoming mummified, or at any rate of becoming mummified astrally. While, so long as the sun remained with the earth, conditions had been too fine, they now became too coarse. Consequently, as the development of the earth proceeded, man could thrive less and less by maintaining his connection with it. This is described in detail in my Occult Science.

We know from yesterday's lecture that men were still psycho-spiritual beings at this time, but that they were unable to unite with the earth on account of the density of the matter which streamed from the earth into its periphery so long as the moon remained with it. So it came about that the great majority of human souls had to relinquish their union with the earth. Here we come to something of great importance in the relationship between man and earth, something which happened during the time between the separation of the sun and that of the moon. During this interval human soul-spirits, except for a very small number, abandoned earthly conditions, and pressing upward into higher regions, continued their evolution upon the several planets belonging to our solar system, each according to the stage of his development. Some souls were fitted to pursue their evolution on Saturn, others on Mars, others again on Mercury, and so on. Only a very small number of the strongest soul-spirits remained in union with the earth. During this time the rest dwelt upon the earth's planetary neighbours. This came about at a time preceding (to use our own terminology) the Lemurian age.

Then came that other important event, which took place as we know during the Lemurian time, whereby the moon with all its matter and all its forces was itself withdrawn from the earth. This brought about great changes in the earth, which now for the first time came into a condition in which the human being could thrive. Whereas the earth's forces would have been too spiritual had it remained united with the sun, they would have become too coarse had it remained with the moon. Hence the moon too withdrew, and both sun and moon Beings then worked upon the earth from without, thereby bringing it into a state of balance. And in this way the earth prepared itself to become the bearer of human existence. This all happened during the Lemurian age.

Evolution now makes a further advance, and little by little the human soul-spirits who had escaped to the planets begin to return again. That went on far into the Atlantean epoch. What had crystallised out as man during the latter part of Lemuria and during Atlantis was gradually endowed with soul-spirits of differing characteristics, according to whether they came from Mars, or Mercury, or Jupiter and so on. This brought about great variety in earthly incarnations. Those of you who are familiar with the lectures I gave recently in Christiania know that this division of men into Mars-men, Saturn-men and so on was the origin of what later became racial differentiation. It is still possible today for the seer to recognise whether a man's soul has descended from this or that planet.

But it has also been emphasised—and it has been fully discussed in my Occult Science—that by no means all human souls abandoned the earth. What we might describe as the toughest souls were able to go on using earthly matter, and to remain with the earth. I have even mentioned the startling circumstance that there was an outstanding pair of humans who survived the densification of the earth. Spiritual investigation impels us to accept what to begin with seems incredible—that there was such a couple as Adam and Eve, and that the races which arose out of the return of souls from the cosmos came about through their union with the descendants of that pair.

If we bear all this in mind we shall be able to come to a conclusion as to the point of time in our spiritual scientific chronology to which the Bible account refers. Let me remind you that after the six or seven “days” of creation have been described, there comes what the superficial approach of modern biblical criticism takes for a second, separate account of creation; really it is quite consistent with the first. I have often described how during the progress of earthly evolution from the Lemurian to the Atlantean age a kind of cooling down of the earth took place. I went into this in detail in my Occult Science. During Lemuria we must think of the earth as a fundamentally fiery body, as having the element of fire spurting in it; the cooling-down process only began with the transition to Atlantis. During the Atlantean age the surface of the earth was still very different from what it became later; far on into the Atlantean age the surrounding atmosphere was still not water-free. The earth was completely covered with volumes of watery mist. The separation between rain and rain-free air which we have today did not exist in those ancient times. Everything was shrouded in watery mist, laden with all kinds of smoky fumes and other matter which had not at that time assumed liquid form. Much which today is solid at that time still permeated the atmosphere in the form of steam. And far on into Atlantis everything was permeated by those volumes of watery mist.

But that was the very period when what had previously existed in a much more spiritual condition began to take on physical form. In the condition described as the third “day” of creation we must not think that the forms of individual plants, as we know them today, sprouted from the earth, but we must give full weight to the phrase “after his kind,” that is, in species form; the reference is rather to the group-souls of the plants which were present in the earth in an etheric-astral state. What was described on the third “day” as the creation of the plants would not have been visible to external senses, it would only have been seen by clairvoyant organs of perception. It was during the time lasting from the end of Lemuria right on into Atlantis, the time when a state of mist developed in the periphery of the earth, and then gradually grew lighter, that what previously had been etheric became transformed into a condition somewhat resembling what we know today. The etheric became more and more physical. Strange as it may sound, the plant kingdom visible to the external eye did not develop until much later than the time indicated in the account of the third “day” of creation. It did not come about until the time of Atlantis. The geological conditions necessary for the development of the visible plants of today cannot be ascribed to a very early period.

The course of events from the end of Lemuria right on into the Atlantean time can be summarised as follows. The earth was enveloped in dense volumes of mist, charged with clouds of the smoke of various substances, later to be transformed into the crust of the earth. The beings “according to their kind,” visible to clairvoyant consciousness, had not yet been brought to physical densification; and the fertilising of the earth's soil with what still hovered in the atmosphere as water had not yet taken place; that only happened later. How could the Bible give this expression? It would have to say at a certain point: “Even after the conclusion of the seven days of creation, after the completion of what took place during Lemuria, still none of the plants we know today sprouted forth from the earth, the earth was still covered in mist.”

The Bible does in fact say this. If you read on, after the description of the seven days, you find it mentioned that there were still no herbs, no shrubs, on the earth, although it had been said earlier that the forms of the plants had arisen in species form. On the first occasion the reference was to something of a group-soul nature, the second time to something which sprang forth from the earth as vegetation in individual physical form. And the Atlantean mist is described as in fact it was after the “days” of creation. The words For the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth indicate that the condensation of the water in the atmosphere to rain only came about after the “days” of creation.

Thus we find a profound wisdom here. But I can assure you that nothing from this document influenced the description given in my Occult Science. I purposely refrained from consulting the Bible, and I might say that there were times when I tried hard to reach results which differed from those of this ancient tradition. Modern materialistic ideas of the Bible make it inevitable that one should not readily read into it any of the facts of Spiritual Science. But Spiritual Science itself constrained us to find in the Bible what we have ventured to say in these lectures, and our own reluctance notwithstanding, we have at last been obliged to recognise in the Bible what spiritual investigation had previously discovered.

Having made our position clear, we may now go on to ask where in the Genesis account we have to place the departure of human souls to the neighbouring planetary bodies, or planetary Beings, brought about by the hardening condition of the earth. We must put it at the point where it says that through the formation of the sound-ether the upper substances are separated from the lower. I went into that fully in my description of the second “day.” And when one follows it all with the eye of the seer one realises that along with what withdrew from the earth, which the Elohim called “heaven,” there withdrew at the same time the human souls. So it is the second “day” of creation which corresponds with the withdrawal of the human soul-spirits into the periphery of the earth at a definite time between the withdrawal of the sun and that of the moon.

But we must bear in mind that there is an important corollary to this. What was it exactly that went out into the cosmos at that time? In which member of man have we to look for it today? Of course it does not exist today as it was at that time, but we can nevertheless find something corresponding to it in certain members of our present human organisation. Let us look at the human being for a moment. Today we distinguish in him four members, the physical, etheric and astral bodies and the bearer of the ego. We know that the physical and etheric bodies during sleep remain in the bed. When we are concerned with those ancient times which are described in the second and on into the third “day” of creation, we cannot speak of physical and etheric bodies as we know them today. These were only formed later out of earthly substance. All there was of the human being at that time belonged to the part of man which today withdraws in sleep from the other human members (grown denser since that time); it belonged to the astral being of man. It is the forces working in the astral body that we must have in mind, when we contemplate the human soul-spirit which at that time took leave of the earth in order to thrive better upon the surrounding planets. It is those forces we have when with our astral body we are outside our physical and etheric bodies, which we have to look for on the surrounding planets after the second “day.”

We know, however, that when today man in the state of sleep is with his finer members outside his physical and etheric bodies, he is so to say articulated into the astral environment of our earth, into the forces and influences of the members of our planetary system. Man is then united with the planetary Beings. But in those far-away times man was not only united with the planets in some kind of sleep, but after his flight from the earth he was united with them all the time. Thus we have to bear in mind that during the third “day” of creation human souls—with the exception of those I have mentioned who stayed behind—were not on the earth, but in the region of the planets; there they had settled and there they developed further. But meanwhile, on the earth, those who, as the strongest, the toughest, had remained behind were developing. And their evolution consisted in clothing themselves more and more with earthly matter, so that there below on the earth, what we now have during the day as our physical and etheric bodies was being prepared. It was in order that these etheric and physical bodies should be able to play their part in every phase of earth development that some souls were preserved on the earth. By that means the etheric and physical bodies which were in course of preparation were propagated even while the moon forces were still united with the earth.

If we bring before our souls a true picture of the state of things after the withdrawal of the sun, we have to say that for the most part what is of a soul-spiritual nature in man is on the neighbouring planets in the circumference of the earth. The sun had already departed, but if at that time a man had been able to stand upon the earth, he would have seen dense formations of misty, smoky and steaming cloud upon its surface. No trace of sun was to be seen. The sun with its forces was far away, and only little by little began to take effect on earth by causing this volume of smoky mist gradually to lighten, and to assume in the circumference of the earth the form which the development of humanity needed. And if a man had been able to look upon evolution from without, he would have seen that it was only very gradually that the fog and the smoke lifted and that the forces of the sun began, not only to act through the dark envelope of smoke, but truly to make themselves perceptible. Or let us say that we are coming to the fourth “day” of creation, and getting near to the event we call the separation of the moon. Had a man been living on the earth at that time, he would have seen the rays of the sun piercing through the masses of smoke and steam. And while this was happening the earth gradually came into a state favourable to human incarnation, a state in which human beings could once more live. From the physical descendants of those who had remained with the earth throughout, bodies could now be produced for the soul-spirits who were returning from the periphery of the earth.

Thus we have two kinds of propagation. What later became the human physical and etheric body derives from those who remained on earth. The soul-spiritual element comes into it from the periphery. To begin with this approach from the neighbourhood of the planets was a spiritual influx. At the moment when the sun had penetrated the clouds of steam and smoke, after the moon had left it, the desire awoke in the soul-spirits of the neighbouring planets to come down again into this earthly region. When from the earth the sun became visible on the one hand and the moon on the other, the urge to descend to the earth grew more pressing in these souls. That is the reality lying behind the words used in describing the fourth “day” of creation: And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. For by the stars are meant the planets surrounding the earth. Thus the deed which brought about a kind of balance was produced on the one hand by the sun and on the other by the moon, and at the same time the human souls who wanted to incarnate on the earth prepared for their descent.

This places the fourth “day” of creation at a point in the Lemurian age, after the exit of the moon, when those conditions come about which you find described in my Occult Science, and which you can summarise in the words: “The human soul-spirits are pressing back to earth again.”

But now we must turn our attention for a little to the accompanying spiritual conditions. What we have just been considering is what afterwards became physical. We must become ever clearer that always behind the coarser lies a finer, and behind the physical lies a spiritual. With the exit of the sun the Elohim withdrew, transferring their scene of action to the exterior, so that they could work towards the earth from the periphery. But not all of them went. A part of the Elohim remained united with the earth, even while the earth still had the moon forces within it. And that part of the spiritual forces of the Elohim which remained united with the earth is in a certain way connected with all the good effects of the moon forces. For we must speak of good moon influences too. After the separation of the sun, everything on earth, human beings especially, would have been constrained towards a state of mummification, a hardened, woody condition. The human being would have been lost to the earth. The earth would have become a desert waste if it had retained the moon forces within its body. Within the earth the moon forces could never have been beneficial. Why was it that they had nevertheless to remain along with the earth for a time? Because humanity had to endure every phase of the earth's condition, because its toughest representatives had to survive the moon-densification. But then, after the moon had left the earth, its forces, which otherwise would have led to the death of the earth, became beneficial. After the withdrawal of the moon forces everything revived again, so that even weaker souls were able to descend and incarnate in human bodies. Thus by becoming her neighbour, the moon became earth's benefactor—which from within the earth it never could have been. The Beings who guided this whole series of events are the great benefactors of man. Who were they? They were the very Beings who had just united themselves with the moon, who then wrested the moon from the earth, in order to guide men further in earth evolution. We know from the Genesis account that the leading Guiding Powers were the Elohim. And the forces which brought about the mighty event of the moon's withdrawal and thereby enabled man to assume his proper nature were none other than the very forces which brought about the cosmic advancement of the Elohim to Jahve-Elohim. Part of the Elohim forces remained united with the moon and then withdrew it from our earth. Thus Jahve-Elohim is intimately bound up with what we find in creation as the body of the moon.

Now let us picture to ourselves more closely what all this really signified for man in his earthly incarnation. If man had remained tied to an earth which had the sun within it, then he would have become a mere cipher, fettered to the Elohim; he would not have been able to sever himself, and attain to independent being. But because the Elohim withdrew with the sun, man was enabled to remain with the earth and to preserve his own soul-spiritual life. If it had stopped there, however, man would have become hardened, he would have met his death. Why had man to come into a condition which provided even the possibility of his death? In order that he might become free, in order that he might cut himself off from the Elohim, in order that he might become an independent being. In the moon element man has something within him which really leads to decay, to death, and he would have received too big a dose of this element, had the moon not withdrawn. But you see how it all follows that it is this moon element which, as cosmic substance, is closely connected with human independence.

Present conditions on earth were brought about after the separation of the moon. The influence of the moon is thus not so strong now as it once was. But as far as the foundations of his physical and etheric bodies are concerned, man lived through the moon period too, he lived through the time when the earth was united with the moon, and therefore he has within him something of what is up there on the moon. He has preserved it in his physical and etheric bodies ever since. Thus man has the moon element within him. The earth could not have supported this moon element within it, but man has it in a certain way within him. Thus he has the disposition to be something other than a mere earth being.

As men we have the earth under us; the moon had to be cast out of the earth, but not until the right dose of its nature had been injected into man himself. The earth contains no trace of moon in it; it is we who bear that within ourselves. What would have become of the earth if the moon had not been wrested from it? Look at the moon for once with rather different eyes. The whole constitution of its matter is different from that of the earth. The astro-physicist speaking from the material aspect says that the moon has no air, scarcely any water, which means that it is far denser than the earth. It therefore contains forces which would lead the earth beyond the degree of hardness which earth actually has. These moon forces would make the earth physically harder, more fissured. To get a picture of what the earth would become if the moon forces were still in it, think of a very wet, muddy road becoming dustier and dustier as the water in it evaporates. You can see the whole process happening when after a fall of rain the mud in the street gradually turns to dust. Something like that would have happened to the earth if the moon forces had remained within it—it would have cracked and crumbled into lumps of dust. Something like that will happen to the earth one day, when it has fulfilled its task—it will crumble into cosmic dust. Earthly matter will be dissolved in cosmic space as cosmic dust when man has passed through his evolution upon it. Thus we can say that the earth would have become dust, it had the tendency to become dust, to crumble into particles of dust. It has only been saved from doing so already by the withdrawal of the moon.

But in man something has remained of this disposition towards dust. Through all the circumstances which I have described to you man receives into his being something of moony earth-dust. Those Beings connected with the moon have actually introduced into the human bodily nature something not derived from the earth which we have in our environment since the withdrawal of the moon; there has been imprinted into the human body something of the moon-earth-dust. But since Jahve-Elohim is united with this moon-nature, it means that it is Jahve-Elohim who has imprinted this moon-earth-dust into the human body. So there must have been a point in the course of earth evolution when it would be correct to say that in the cosmic progress of the Elohim Jahve-Elohim imprinted into the human body the earth-dust, the moon-earth-dust. These are the depths beneath that passage in the Bible which says that Jahve-Elohim formed man of the dust of the earth. For that is what it says. None of the translations which convey that Jahve-Elohim formed man out of “a clod of earth” make any sense. Jahve-Elohim imprinted into man the earth-dust. [The English Authorised Version says: And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground.]

Not a few of the startling discoveries we have already made have filled us with awestruck veneration in face of the revelations uttered in the Bible by the ancient seers and rediscovered in our own day be spiritual scientific research. But here, in the words “And Jahve-Elohim imprinted in man's bodily nature the moon-earth-dust,” the tale told by the clairvoyant authors of the Genesis narrative may well inspire in us a sensation of almost overwhelming reverence. And if those ancient seers were aware how the tidings which made them vocal came to them out of the realm wherein the Elohim, and Jahve-Elohim, were active—if they knew themselves to be receiving their wisdom from the very region of the World-creators—then they could say: “There is streaming into us as knowledge, as wisdom, as intelligence, the very Same that once worked within those Beings, giving shape to the earth itself in the beginning.”

Therefore we can look up in holy awe to those ancient seers, who themselves looked up into the regions whence their inspiration descended, into the realm of the Elohim and of Jahve-Elohim. By what name could they have called those Beings, who underpinned alike the creation itself and their own knowledge of it?

What sort of word could they have had for them—unless it were one which filled their whole hearts in the moment of receiving this revelation of the world-creative powers? Looking up to these, they said to themselves: “Our revelation flows down into us from divine-spiritual Beings. We can find no word for those Beings, save only that one which expresses the holy awe we feel. ‘They that beget the holy awe we feel.’” If we translate that into ancient Hebrew how does it run? “They that beget the holy awe we feel”—it has the ring of Elohim—the Hebrew word for those before whom man feels a holy awe. And in such a way we may approach the link which is to be found between the feelings and perceptions of the ancient seers and the name of those Beings to whom they attributed the creation and also their own power of revealing the creation.

An so vielen Stellen dieser Vorträge durften wir darauf hinweisen, wie sich in dem Bericht der Genesis, wenn wir ihn richtig verstehen, die Ergebnisse der seherischen Forschung wiederum zeigen. Es wird nun noch an mehreren Punkten unsere Aufgabe sein, auf diese Übereinstimmung hinzuweisen. Zunächst wird es sich darum handeln, genauer noch zu zeigen, von welcher Zeit eigentlich die Genesis handelt, wenn wir Rücksicht nehmen auf das, was uns die geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung über unser Erdenwerden sagt. Ich habe ja in einer gewissen Beziehung schon darauf hingewiesen, indem ich sozusagen den Beginn der Genesis hineinstellte in den Zeitpunkt, da Sonne und Erde sich anschickten, sich voneinander zu trennen, aber wir werden doch noch genauer auf dieses Verhältnis einzugehen haben.

Diejenigen von Ihnen, die verschiedene Vorträge der verflossenen Jahre gehört haben, und auch solche, die sich ein wenig mit der Darstellung der Erdenentwickelung in meiner «Geheimwissenschaft» beschäftigt haben, werden sich erinnern, welche Bedeutung da zwei wichtigen Momenten in dieser Erdenentwickelung zugeschrieben wird. Der erste ist die Abtrennung der Sonne von der Erde. Dieser Zeitpunkt ist ein ganz wichtiger. Es mußte einmal diese Sonnentrennung von der Erde stattfinden, denn wären die beiden Weltenkörper wie im Beginne des Erdenwerdens miteinander verknüpft geblieben, so hätte der Fortgang der Menschheitsentwickelung dem Menschen seine eigentliche Erdenbedeutung nicht geben können. Alles das, was wir Sonne nennen, also natürlich nicht nur das Elementarische oder Physische des Sonnenleibes, sondern auch alle die geistigen Wesenheiten, die zum Sonnenleibe gehören, alles das mußte sozusagen aus der Erde heraustreten, oder, wenn man es richtiger findet, es mußte die Erde von sich abstoßen, weil, trivial gesprochen, die Kräfte jener Wesenheiten, welche ihren Schauplatz von der Erde hinaus auf die Sonne verlegt haben, für das Gedeihen des Menschen zu stark gewirkt hätten, wenn sie mit der Erde verbunden geblieben wären. Diese Wesenheiten mußten gleichsam ihre Kräfte dadurch abschwächen, daß sie sich hinausverlegten von dem Erdenschauplatz und von außen her wirkten. So haben wir den Zeitpunkt, wo eine Anzahl von Wesenheiten zur Abschwächung ihrer Wirkungen ihren Schauplatz nach außen verlegen und nun weniger stark in das Menschenwerden und auch in das Tierwerden eingreifen. Wir haben damit also von einem gewissen Momente an die Erde sich selber überlassen, die Erde mit einer gewissen Vergröberung ihrer Kräfte, denn die feineren, die geistigeren Kräfte haben sich mit der Sonne von der Erde getrennt. Der Mensch aber blieb in bezug auf jene Wesenheit, zu der er durch Saturn-, Sonnen- und Mondenentwickelung hindurch geworden war, mit der Erde noch eine Weile nach der Sonnentrennung vereint. Es waren ja nur hocherhabene Wesenheiten, welche mit der Sonne ihren Schauplatz nach außen verlegten.

Aber als die Erde abgetrennt war, hatte sie noch alles in sich, was zur Substantialität, zu den Kräften der heutigen Mondentwikkelung gehört. So haben wir also nach der Sonnentrennung eine Erdenentwickelung, die sozusagen in ihrem Leibe auch noch die Mondentwickelung hat. Der Mensch war also Verhältnissen ausgesetzt, die viel gröber waren, als die eigentlichen Erdenverhältnisse später geworden sind, denn der Mond hat sozusagen eine grobe Substantialität. Das hatte zur Folge, daß nach der Trennung der Sonne von der Erde die Erde in ihren Kräften immer mondhafter, immer dichter wurde. Eine weitere Folge war die, daß der Mensch jetzt einer anderen Gefahr ausgesetzt war, der Gefahr, in sich abzusterben, zu mumifizieren, allerdings astralisch zu mumifizieren. Waren die Verhältnisse gewissermaßen zu fein, als die Sonne noch mit der Erde vereint war, so wurden sie jetzt zu grob. Das bewirkte, daß im weiteren Fortgange der Erdenentwickelung die Menschenwesen immer weniger und weniger gedeihen konnten unter der Aufrechterhaltung ihrer Verbindung mit der Erde. Das alles ist Ihnen ja genauer dargestellt in meiner «Geheimwissenschaft».

Wir wissen aus dem gestrigen Vortrage, daß die Menschen damals zwar geistig-seelische Wesen waren, daß sie aber in diesem geistig-seelischen Zustand eben sich nicht verbinden konnten mit dem, was von den Materien der Erde heraufstrahlte in den Erdenumktreis, weil ihnen das zu grob wurde, solange der Mond mit der Erde verbunden war. Und so kam es, daß die weitaus größte Mehrzahl der Menschenseelen ihre Verbindung mit der Erde lösen mußte. Damit weisen wir hin auf ein bedeutsames Ereignis, das sich in dem Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Erde vollzogen hat während der Zeit, die zwischen der Sonnen- und der Mondentrennung liegt. Mit Ausnahme einer ganz geringen Zahl nahmen die menschlichen Seelengeister in dieser Zwischenzeit Abschied von den Erdenverhältnissen und drängten sich hinauf in höhere Regionen. Und je nach ihrer Entwickelungsstufe setzten nun diese Menschenseelengeister ihre Weiterentwickelung fort auf den Planeten, die zu unserem Erden-Sonnensystem gehören. Gewisse Seelengeister waren dazu veranlagt, auf dem Saturn, andere auf dem Mars, wieder andere auf dem Merkur und so weiter ihre Entwickelung zunächst fortzusetzen. Nur eine ganz geringe Anzahl stärkster menschlicher Seelengeister blieb mit der Erde in Verbindung. Die andern wurden in dieser Zwischenzeit Bewohner der planetarischen Nachbarn unserer Erde. Das war zu einer Zeit, die, wenn wir den gebräuchlichen Ausdruck anwenden, unserem lemurischen Zeitalter vorangegangen ist. Da hat das, was wir nennen können unseren menschlichen Seelenzustand, eine Entwickelung auf den benachbarten Planeten unserer Erde durchgemacht.

Dann kam das andere wesentliche Ereignis, von dem wir ja wissen, daß es während der lemurischen Zeit stattfand, und durch das die Mondsubstantialität mit allen Mondenkräften aus der Erde selber hinausverlegt wurde. Der Hinausgang des Mondes aus der Erde fand statt. Damit gingen aber gewaltige Veränderungen mit der Erde vor sich. Jetzt erst wurde die Erde zu einem Zustande gebracht, daß der Mensch gedeihen konnte. Während die Kräfte sozusagen zu geistig gewesen wären, wenn die Erde mit der Sonne verbunden geblieben wäre, so hätten sie zu grob werden müssen, wenn die Erde mit dem Monde vereint geblieben wäre. So also entfernte sich der Mond, und es blieb die Erde in einer Art Gleichgewichtszustand zurück, der dadurch bewirkt wurde, daß von außen die Sonnen- und Mondwesen wirkten. Und dadurch bereitete sich die Erde dazu vor, daß sie die Trägerin des Menschendaseins werden konnte. Das alles geschah während der lemurischen Zeit.

Nun geht die Entwickelung weiter, und nach und nach findet ein Wiederherabgehen, ein Wiederherabströmen der zu den planetarischen Nachbarn unserer Erde geflüchteten Menschenseelengeister statt. Das ist etwas, was sich bis lange in die atlantische Zeit hinein noch fortgesetzt hat, daß da immer herunterstiegen die Seelen von den Nachbarplaneten. Und die Entwickelung während der letzten lemurischen und während der atlantischen Zeit vollzog sich so, daß das, was sich als Mensch herausktristallisierte, nach und nach begabt wurde mit Seelengeistern verschiedener Art, je nachdem diese Seelengeister vom Mars, vom Merkur, vom Jupiter und so weiter herabkamen. Dadurch war eine große Mannigfaltigkeit in das Erdenwerden des Menschen gekommen. Diejenigen, welche sich bekanntgemacht haben mit meinen letzten Christiania-Vorträgen, die wissen, daß in dieser Gliederung nach Mars-, Saturnmenschen und so weiter etwas Ursprüngliches gegeben war, was später dann zur Rassendifferenzierung der Menschen geführt hat. Da also haben wir die Verschiedenheit innerhalb des Menschengeschlechtes zu suchen, und man kann noch heute, wenn man den Blick dafür hat, an einem Menschen erkennen, ob seine Seele herunter gekommen ist von diesem oder jenem planetarischen Nachbarn unserer Erde.

Aber auch das haben wir ja schon öfter betont, und es ist genau auseinandergesetzt in meiner «Geheimwissenschaft», daß keineswegs alle Menschenseelengeister die Erde verlassen haben. Wenn wir trivial sprechen wollen, so dürfen wir sagen: Die tüchtigsten Seelen konnten weiterfort das Erdenmaterial benützen und mit ihm in Verbindung bleiben. — Ja, ich habe sogar darauf hingewiesen, daß in überraschender Art ein Hauptpaar vorhanden war, welches jene Vergröberung der Erdenzustände überdauerte. Wir werden, was man anfangs gar nicht glauben kann, durch den Zwang der seelischen Forschung geradezu zu der Annahme geführt, daß ein solches menschliches Hauptpaar da war, wie es uns die Bibel in dern Adam und der Eva zeigt, und daß sich hinzugegliedert haben zu ihren Nachkommen jene Menschenarten, die dadurch entstanden sind, daß ihre Seelengeister aus dem Weltall auf die Erde heruntergekommen sind.

Wenn wir dies alles ins Auge fassen, dann werden wir uns einer Auseinandersetzung nähern, die uns sagen kann, welches in unserer geisteswissenschaftlichen Sprache eigentlich die Zeit ist, von der uns die Bibel redet. Ich erinnere Sie noch daran, daß, nachdem uns die sogenannten sechs oder sieben Schöpfungstage in der Bibel geschildert sind, jene andere Schilderung folgt, die der Dilettantismus der heutigen Bibelforschung für eine zweite Schöpfungsgeschichte hält, die aber in Wirklichkeit durchaus sachgemäß ist. Ich möchte Sie an einige geisteswissenschaftliche Ergebnisse erinnern. Ich habe das öfters erwähnt und auch in meiner «Geheimwissenschaft» genauer auseinandergesetzt. Ich habe gezeigt, wie das Erdenwerden vorwärtsschreitet von der lemurischen Zeit zur atlantischen Zeit, wie sozusagen während dieses Fortschreitens eine Art von Abkühlung der physischen Erde vor sich geht. Wir müssen uns während der lemurischen Zeit im Grunde genommen die Erde als ein in sich feuriges Wesen denken, das noch überall das Element des Feuers in sich aufsprühend zeigt, und erst mit dem Herübergange zur atlantischen Zeit ist diese Abkühlung eingetreten. Ich habe darauf hingewiesen, daß während der atlantischen Zeit das, was sich über dem Erdboden befand, noch ganz anders als später war, daß weit, weit in die atlantischen Zeiten hinein die Erde nicht von einem wasserfreien Luftkreis umgeben war. Bedeckt war die Erde mit einer ganz und gar von Wasser-Nebelmassen erfüllten Luft. Das, was wir heute als Sonderung von Regen und regenfreier Luft kennen, das gab es in diesen alten Zeiten nicht. Alles war gehüllt in Wasser-Nebelmassen, die durchschwängert waren von allen möglichen Dünsten und Rauchen und anderen Stoffen, die dazumal noch nicht die feste Gestalt angenommen hatten. Vieles, was heute fest ist, war damals noch in Dampfform, den heutigen Luftkreis durchströmend. Und bis lange hinein in die atlantischen Zeiten war alles durchsetzt von solchen Wasser-Nebelmassen.

Das waren aber auch die Zeiten, wo sich zuerst physisch herausbildete, was früher in einem viel geistigeren Zustand vorhanden war. Ich habe ja darauf hingewiesen, daß in den Verhältnissen, die wir beim sogenannten dritten Schöpfungstage verzeichnet finden, wir nicht denken müssen, daß individuelle Pflanzenformen aus dem Erdboden heraussproßten, wie wir sie heute sehen, sondern daß wir wohl beachten müssen den Ausdruck «artgemäß»; daß wir es da mehr mit Gattungsseelen zu tun haben, die in einem ätherischastralischen Zustand innerhalb des Erdenleibes vorhanden waren. Alles das, was uns vom dritten Schöpfungstage als das Pflanzenwerden geschildert wird, wäre nicht zu sehen gewesen mit äußeren Sinnen, nur den hellseherischen Wahrnehmungsorganen wäre es wahrnehmbar gewesen. Während von der lemurischen zur atlantischen Zeit herüber sich jener Nebelzustand im Umkreise der Erde entwickelte und sich nun immer mehr und mehr die Nebel lichteten, da verwandelte sich auch das, was früher ätherisch war, in einen Zustand, der sich dem annäherte, was wir heute kennen. Das Ätherische wurde mehr und mehr physisch, und so wunderbar es klingt, denn auch die Geologie ist heute vielfach von materialistischen Anschauungen durchsetzt: die für ein äußeres Auge sichtbaren Pflanzenwesen entwickelten sich erst viel später als in der Zeit, die mit dem sogenannten dritten Schöpfungstage bezeichnet ist. Erst gegen die atlantische Zeit hin entwickelten sie sich. Die geologischen Verhältnisse, die zu den heutigen Pflanzen notwendig sind, haben wir nicht in sehr frühe Zeit unserer Forschung zu verlegen.

Wir könnten also den Hergang von der lemurischen in die atlantische Zeit so charakterisieren: Da war die Erde ringsum bedeckt mit dichten Nebelmassen, in denen die Rauchmassen der verschiedenen Substanzen, die sich später in die der Erdrinde verwandelten, noch aufgelöst waren, und noch nicht bis zur physischen Verdichtung hatten es gebracht die artgemäßen Wesen, die dem hellsichtigen Bewußtsein sichtbar waren. Noch war nicht eingetreten, was man nennen kann eine Düngung des Erdbodens mit dem, was als Wasser in der Luft schwebte. Das trat erst später ein. — Wie konnte also die Bibel dies zuerst schildern? Nun, sie mußte an einer ganz bestimmten Stelle sagen: Auch nach Ablauf der sieben Schöpfungstage, nach Ablauf dessen, was erst zusammenfällt mit dem lemurischen Zeitalter, waren noch nicht unsere heutigen physischen Pflanzen aus der Erde herausgesproßt, war die Erde noch bedeckt mit Nebelmassen.

Die Bibel schildert den Sachverhalt. Lesen Sie weiter nach den sieben Schöpfungstagen, so finden Sie darauf hingewiesen, trotzdem früher schon die Rede davon war, daß artgemäß die Pflanzenformen entstanden waren, daß noch kein Kraut und keine Sträucher auf der Erde waren. Das erstemal ist die Rede von dem Gattungsseelenmäßigen, das zweitemal von dem, was in physischer Individualität als Pflanzenwuchs aus der Erde heraussprießt. Und sachgemäß ist mit dem Nebel der Atlantis-Nebel geschildert nach den Schöpfungstagen. Daß erst dann die Verdichtung des LuftWassers zum Regen stattfindet, ist angedeutet mit den Worten «Denn Jahve-Elohim hatte noch nicht regnen lassen».

So also steckt in diesen Dingen eine tiefe Weisheit. Aber ich kann Ihnen die Versicherung geben, daß nichts von alledem, was in dieser Urkunde steht, in die Darstellung meiner «Geheimwissenschaft» eingeflossen ist. Ich habe mich absichtlich ferngehalten von der Bibel, und ich möchte sagen, es hat Zeiten gegeben, wo ich mir redlich Mühe gegeben habe, diese Dinge anders zu finden als aus dieser Urkunde heraus. Es ergibt sich ja auch sozusagen als Notwendigkeit bei den heutigen materialistischen Vorstellungen von der Bibel, daß man es nicht leicht damit nimmt, in die Bibel etwas hineinzuinterpretieren von den Tatsachen der Geisteswissenschaft. Aber der geisteswissenschaftliche Zwang ist es, der uns eben in der Bibel das finden ließ, was wir in diesen Tagen haben sagen dürfen, und wenn wir selbst widerstreben, werden wir zuletzt gezwungen, das, was erst die seherische Forschung findet, in der Bibel wiederzusehen.

Nach diesen Voraussetzungen dürfen wir uns fragen: An welche Stelle der Genesisschilderung müssen wir nun den Hinausgang des Geistig-Seelischen versetzen, das Fortgehen der Seelengeister der Menschen nach den der Erde benachbarten planetarischen Leibern oder Wesenheiten, das hervorgerufen wurde durch den vergröberten Zustand der Erde? — Wir müssen es dort hinsetzen, wo uns erzählt wird, daß durch die Entstehung des Klangäthers — ich habe Ihnen das ganz genau dargestellt bei der Schilderung des sogenannten zweiten Schöpfungstages — abgetrennt werden die oberen Substantialitäten von den unteren. Und wenn man alles das, was da gemeint ist, verfolgt mit dem Blick des Sehers, dann sagt man sich: Mit dem, was nach oben geht, was sich von der Erde entfernt, wovon gesagt wird, daß die Elohim es «Himmel» nannten, mit dem zugleich entfernten sich die Seelengeister der Menschen. — So fällt der zweite Schöpfungstag mit einer ganz bestimmten Zeit zwischen Sonnen- und Mondentrennung von der Erde zusammen, mit dem Hinausgehen der Seelengeister des Menschen in die Umgebung der Erde.

Nun aber müssen wir ins Auge fassen, daß das etwas ganz Gewichtiges zur Folge hat. Was ist es denn eigentlich, was damals hinausgegangen ist in den Weltraum? Mit anderen Worten: Wo finden wir denn das heute im Menschen? In welchen Gliedern des Menschen haben wir das zu suchen, was dazumal hinausgeschritten ist in den Weltenraum? — So wie es damals vorhanden war, ist es natürlich heute nicht vorhanden, aber wir können es doch in Parallele stellen mit gewissen Gliedern in der heutigen Menschenorganisation. Sehen wir uns daraufhin einmal den Menschen an. Wir gliedern heute den Menschen in die bekannten vier Glieder, den physischen, den Äther-, den Astralleib und den Ichträger. Wir wissen, daß von diesen vier Gliedern während des nachtschlafenden Zustandes im Bette liegen bleiben der physische und Ätherleib. Wenn wir von den alten Zeiten sprechen, für welche das im zweiten und wohl auch bis zum dritten Schöpfungstage Geschilderte gilt, dann dürfen wir nicht schon von dem physischen und dem ätherischen Leib, so wie er heute ist, sprechen. Die gliederten sich erst später aus der Erdensubstantialität heraus. Was dazumal von dem Menschen vorhanden war, das gehört heute wesentlich dem an, was im nachtschlafenden Zustand aus den heutigen dichteren Gliedern der Menschennatur herausgeht, das, was wir die astralische Wesenheit des Menschen nennen. Das, was als Kräfte in unserem astralischen Leib wirkt, das haben wir zunächst anzusprechen, wenn wir den Seelengeist des Menschen ins Auge fassen, der dazumal Abschied nahm von der Erde, um auf den umliegenden Planeten besser zu gedeihen. Also das, was zu unseren Kräften gehört, wenn wir mit unserem Astralleib aus dem physischen und Ätherleib heraus sind, das haben wir nach dem zweiten Schöpfungstage zu suchen auf den der Erde benachbarten Planeten.

Nun wissen wir aber, daß, wenn der Mensch heute im nachtschlafenden Zustand mit seinen feineren Gliedern heraus ist aus dem physischen und Ätherleib, er sozusagen eingegliedert ist in die astralische Umgebung unserer Erde, in die Kräfte und Strömungen der Glieder unseres Planetensystems. Mit den Planetenwesenheiten ist der Mensch im nachtschlafenden Zustand verbunden. So können wir aber auch sagen: In jenen alten Zeiten war der Mensch nicht nur in irgendeinem nachtschlafenden Zustand mit diesen äußeren Planeten verbunden, sondern er war überhaupt nach seiner Flucht von der Erde immer mit ihnen verbunden. Er verweilte auf diesen Planeten. — Wir haben also für diejenige Zeit, die uns geschildert wird als der dritte Schöpfungstag, ins Auge zu fassen, daß mit Ausnahme jener überdauernden Menschenseelengeister, von denen ich gesprochen habe, die Menschenseelengeister gar nicht auf der Erde, sondern in der Umgebung bei den Planeten waren, dort ihren Wohnsitz aufgeschlagen hatten und mit ihnen sich weiter entwickelten. Auf der Erde aber entwickelten sich mittlerweile diejenigen, die als die Stärksten, als die Tüchtigsten zurückgeblieben waren. Und ihre Entwickelung bestand darin, daß sie sich immer mehr und mehr umkleideten mit dem Stoffmaterial der Erde, daß sozusagen da unten auf der Erde auch das vorgebildet wurde, was wir jetzt während des Tages als unseren Ätherleib und unseren physischen Leib haben. Damit dieser Äther- und physische Leib alle Situationen der Erdenentwickelung mitmachen konnte, wurden eben einige Seelengeister auf der Erde erhalten. Dadurch wurde das, was herangebildet werden sollte für Äther- und physischen Leib, auch während die Mondenkräfte mit der Erde verbunden waren, fortgepflanzt.

Wenn wir uns so recht vor die Seele führen jenen Zustand nach der Sonnentrennung, so müssen wir sagen: Der größte Teil des menschlichen Seelen- und Geisthaften ist im Umkreise der Erde auf den benachbarten Planeten. — Die Sonne hat sich schon getrennt von der Erde, aber wenn damals ein Mensch sich auf der Erde hätte aufstellen können, so würde er über der Oberfläche dichte NebelRauch-Dampfmassen gesehen haben. Von irgendeiner Sonne hätte er nichts gesehen. Die Sonne, die entfernt war mit ihren Kräften, wirkte erst nach und nach so auf die Erde, daß diese Rauch-Nebelmassen sich lichteten und allmählich die Gestalt annahmen für den Erdenumkreis, die notwendig war für die Menschheitsentwickelung. Und erst nach und nach hätte ein solcher Mensch, der sozusagen von draußen sich die Entwickelung angeschaut hätte, gesehen, wie die Nebel anfingen lichter zu werden, wie die Rauchmassen dünner wurden, wie die Sonnenkräfte nicht nur wirkten durch die dunkle Rauchhülle hindurch, wie sie wirklich wahrnehmbar, man möchte sagen, sichtbar wurden. Da gehen wir dem vierten Schöpfungstage entgegen, und damit nähern wir uns immer mehr dem Ereignis, das wir als die Mondabtrennung zu bezeichnen haben. So daß tatsächlich ein Mensch, der damals auf der Erde gelebt hätte, der durch die Rauch- und Dampfmassen hereindringenden Sonnenstrahlen ansichtig geworden wäre. Und indem diese Zustände eintraten, bekam die Erde allmählich jene Verhältnisse, die dem Menschwerden gedeihlich waren, wo wiederum Menschen auf der Erde leben konnten, wo sozusagen aus den physischen Nachkommen derer, welche überdauert hatten, Leiber geschaffen werden konnten für die Seelengeister, die jetzt aus dem Umkreise der Erde zurückkehrten.

So haben Sie, ich möchte sagen, zweierlei Fortpflanzungen. Das, was später zum ätherischen und physischen Leib des Menschen geworden ist, das stammt ab von denen, die überdauert haben. Das Seelisch-Geistige, das kommt aus dem Umkreise herein. Zuerst war dieses Herankommen aus dem Kreise der planetarischen Nachbarn unserer Erde eine geistige Einwirkung. In dem Momente, wo sozusagen die Sonne durchdrungen hatte die Dampf- und Rauchmassen der Erdumgebung, wo der Mond herausgegangen war, da erwachte in den Seelengeistern der Nachbarplaneten der Drang, wiederum herunterzusteigen in dieses Erdgebiet. Indem auf der einen Seite die Sonne von der Erde aus sichtbar wurde und auf der anderen Seite der Mond, da drangen auch die Kräfte der auf die Erde herunterströmenden Seelen zur Erde herein. Da haben Sie die Realitäten für das, was im sogenannten vierten Schöpfungstage mit den Worten geschildert wird: «Es gestalteten die Elohim das größere Licht und das kleinere Licht, das Sonnenwesen, das Mondenwesen, und die Sterne.» Denn mit den Sternen ist nichts anderes gemeint als die planetarischen Nachbarn unserer Erde. Das Werk also, das eine Art von Gleichgewicht herstellte, das bereitete sich vor auf der einen Seite von der Sonne und auf der anderen von dem Monde, und es bereitete sich gleichzeitig vor das Herabwirken der menschlichen Seelengeister, die darnach strebten, sich auf der Erde wieder zu inkorporisieren.

Damit haben wir also den vierten Schöpfungstag da hingestellt, wo während der lemurischen Zeit, nach dem Hinausgang des Mondes, jene Verhältnisse eintraten, die Sie geschildert finden in meiner «Geheimwissenschaft» und die wir damit bezeichnen können, daß wir sagen: Die menschlichen Seelengeister streben wiederum herunter auf die Erde.

Nun aber müssen wir ein wenig die geistigen Begleitzustände ins Auge fassen. Wir haben jetzt mehr das, was nachher physisch wurde, betrachtet. Wir müssen uns immer klarer darüber werden, daß allem Gröberen ein Feineres, allem, was nach dem Physischen strebt, ein Geistiges zugrunde liegt. Mit der Sonne sind im wesentlichen die Elohim von der Erde hinausgegangen, um ihren Schauplatz nach außen zu verlegen, um aus dem Umkreise her zu wirken. Aber nicht alle. Es blieb sozusagen etwas von den Elohim mit der Erde vereinigt, auch als die Erde die Mondenkräfte noch in ihrem Leibe hatte. Und das, was damals von den geistigen Elohimkräften mit der Erde vereint blieb, ist das, was in einer gewissen Weise verbunden ist mit allen guten Wirkungen der Mondenkräfte. Denn wir müssen ja auch von guten Wirkungen der Mondenkräfte sprechen. Nach der Sonnentrennung wäre alles, namentlich der Mensch, auf der Erde in die Mumifizierung, in die Verhärtung, in die Verholzung hineingetrieben. Der Mensch wäre erstorben für die Erde. Die Erde wäre öde geworden, wenn sie die Mondenkräfte in ihrem Leibe behalten hätte. Innerhalb der Erde wären diese Mondenkräfte nicht segensreich geworden. Warum mußten sie dennoch eine Zeitlang bei der Erde bleiben? Aus dem Grunde, weil die Menschheit sozusagen alle Erdenzustände überdauern mußte, weil tatsächlich die Menschheit in ihren tüchtigsten Vertretern durchgehen mußte durch diese Mondenverdichtung. Dann aber, als der Mond sich von der Erde getrennt hatte, da waren die Kräfte, die sonst den Erdentod für die Menschen herbeigeführt hätten, segensreich. Nach dem Hinausgehen der Mondenkräfte erfrischte sich wiederum alles, so daß auch die schwächeren Seelen herunterkommen, sich inkorporisieren konnten in Menschenleibern. So wurde der Mond der Wohltäter der Erde, indem er ihr Nachbar wurde. Was er niemals in der Erde selber hätte sein können, das wurde er als ihr Nachbar. Jene Wesenheiten, welche diese ganze Reihe von Vorgängen dirigierten, das sind die großen Wohltäter des Menschen. Welche Wesenheiten waren das? Nun, diejenigen, die mit dem Monde eben verbunden waren, die dann den Mond gleichsam herausgerissen haben aus der Erde, um den Menschen weiterzuführen innerhalb der Erdenentwickelung. Wir erkennen ja aus dem Berichte der Genesis, daß die Elohim die großen, dirigierenden Kräfte waren. Und was von diesen Elohimkräften jene große gewaltige Tatsache des Mondherausganges bewirkt und dadurch erst das eigentliche Wesen des Menschen herbeigeführt hat, das war nichts anderes, als was auch bewirkt hatte das kosmische Avancement der Elohim zu Jahve-Elohim, was hinaufgeführt hat das Wesen der Elohim zu Jahve-Elohim. Das blieb mit dem Monde vereint, das hat dann auch den Mond herausgeführt aus unserer Erde. Daher dürfen wir sagen: Mit dem, was wir als Mondleib innerhalb unserer Schöpfung finden, ist innig verbunden das, was wir als Jahve-Elohim bezeichnen.

Nun vergegenwärtigen wir uns einmal genauer, was für den Menschen in seinem Erdenwerden eigentlich diese Verhältnisse bedeuten. Wenn der Mensch mit einer Erde verbunden geblieben wäre, die die Sonne in sich enthalten hätte, dann wäre er ein Wesen geworden, das eigentlich ein Nichts wäre. Er wäre einfach verbunden geblieben mit der Wesenhaftigkeit der Elohim, er hätte sich nicht abschnüren können zu einer Selbständigkeit. Da aber die Elohim sich mit ihrer Sonne getrennt hatten von der Erde, da konnte der Mensch mit der Erde verbunden bleiben und sein seelisch-geistiges Leben fristen. Wäre es aber dabei geblieben, dann wäre der Mensch in sich verhärtet, er hätte den Tod gefunden. Wozu mußte der Mensch in einen Zustand kommen, der auch nur die Möglichkeit des Todes bildet? Damit er frei werden konnte, damit er sich abschnüren konnte von den Elohim, damit er ein selbständiges Wesen werden konnte. In dem Mondenteil hat der Mensch etwas in sich, was eigentlich dieses Absterben herbeiführt, und er hätte sozusagen von der Dosis zuviel bekommen, wenn der Mond sich nicht von der Erde getrennt hätte. Aber dennoch erkennen Sie daraus, daß dieses Mondenhafte es ist, das als kosmische Substantialität innig zusammenhängt mit der menschlichen Selbständigkeit.

Wenn Sie nun die heutigen Erdenzustände nehmen, so müssen Sie sich sagen: Diese Verhältnisse sind eigentlich erst herbeigeführt nach der Mondentrennung. Es ist also nicht so viel von diesen Mondenkräften darinnen, als früher einmal schon darinnen war. Aber der Mensch hat in bezug auf die Anlage seines physischen und Ätherleibes auch die Mondenzeit, auch die Verbindung der Erde mit dem Monde überdauert, und dadurch hat er das in sich, was der Erde genommen worden ist. Er trägt etwas von dem, was da oben auf dem Monde ist, in sich. Er hat es über diese Zeit hinaus bewahrt in seinem physischen und Ätherleib. So hat der Mensch ein Mondhaftes in sich, so ist er mit diesem Mondhaften verbunden. Die Erde hätte dieses Mondhafte nicht in sich ertragen, der Mensch aber hat es in gewisser Weise in sich. Er hat also die Anlage, noch etwas anderes zu sein als ein bloßes Erdenwesen.

Wenn Sie das alles überdenken, dann kommen Sie dazu, einzusehen, daß wir sozusagen als Menschen unter uns die Erde haben, daß aus dieser Erde der Mond herausgeworfen werden mußte. Er ist aber erst dann herausgeworfen worden, nachdem die richtige Dosis von seiner Wesenheit dem Menschen selber eingeimpft worden ist. Die Erde trägt nicht das Mondhafte in sich, wir tragen es in uns. Was wäre aus der Erde geworden, wenn der Mond nicht aus ihr herausgerissen worden wäre? — Sehen Sie diesen Mond einmal mit etwas anderen Augen an, als er so häufig heute angesehen wird. Die ganze Konstitution seiner Materie ist eine andere als die der Erde. Im grobmateriellen Sinne sagt der Astrophysiker, daß der Mond keine Luft, kaum ein Wasser hat, das heißt, daß er viel mehr in das Dichte hineingeschossen ist als die Erde. Er enthält also die Kräfte, die sozusagen die Erde noch weiter hinausführen würden über den Zustand der Verhärtung, in dem sie ist, die diese Erde physisch noch härter machen würden. Physisch härter, zerklüfteter würden diese Mondkräfte die Erde machen. Um ein Bild zu haben von dem, was die Erde werden würde, wenn die Mondkräfte in ihr wären, denken Sie sich einfach auf der Straße draußen ein Stück Erdenmaterie, von Wasser durchdrungen, so etwas wie meinetwegen Schlamm. Denken Sie sich das Wasser immer mehr und mehr weichen. Es wird dann diese Erdenmaterie immer staubhafter werden. Sie können sozusagen im Bilde diesen ganzen Vorgang beobachten, wenn Sie nach einem Regen die schlammhafte Straßenmaterie nach und nach zu Staub werden sehen. So etwas wäre im Großen geschehen mit der Erde, ihre Zerklüftung in Staubmassen, wenn die Mondkräfte mit ihr verbunden geblieben wären. So etwas wird auch mit der Erde einstmals geschehen, wenn sie ihre Aufgabe erfüllt haben wird. Sie wird zerklüftet werden in Weltenstaub. Die Erdenmaterie wird als Weltenstaub sich auflösen in den kosmischen Raum, wenn der Mensch seine Entwickelung auf ihr wird durchgemacht haben.

So also können wir sagen: Die Erde wäre Staub geworden, sie hatte in sich die Anlage zum Staubwerden, zum Zerklüfterwerden in Staubteilchen. Behütet worden ist sie vor diesem zu frühen zu Staub Zerklüfterwerden nur dadurch, daß der Mond aus ihr herausgehoben worden ist. — Aber im Menschen ist etwas geblieben von dem, was eigentlich die Anlage hat, zum Staube zu werden. Der Mensch nimmt in seine Wesenheit etwas auf vom mondhaften Erdenstaub durch alle die Verhältnisse, die ich Ihnen geschildert habe. Jene Wesenhaftigkeiten, welche mit dem Monde verbunden sind, haben also eigentlich der menschlichen leiblichen Wesenheit etwas eingefügt, was im Grunde genommen nicht von der Erdenmasse ist, die wir unmittelbar in unserer Umgebung haben, nachdem sich der Mond getrennt hat, sondern von dem mondhaften Erdenstaub haben sie etwas hineingeprägt in die menschliche Leiblichkeit. Da aber mit diesem Mondhaften verknüpft ist JahveElohim, so bedeutet das, daß Jahve-Elohim derjenige ist, der das mondenhaft Erdenstaubmäßige der menschlichen Leiblichkeit eingeprägt hat. Und wir müssen sagen, es mußte im Verlaufe der Erdenentwickelung ein Zeitpunkt kommen, der richtig so bezeichnet wird: Im kosmischen Avancement der Elohim kam die Zeit, da Jahve-Elohim der menschlichen Leiblichkeit den Erdenstaub einprägte, den mondhaften Erdenstaub. — Da haben Sie die ungeheure Tiefe jener Bibelstelle, wo es heißt «Und Jahve-Elohim bildete den Menschen aus dem Erdenstaub». Denn so heißt es. Und alle die Übersetzungen sind der bare Unsinn, die davon reden, JahveElohim hätte den Menschen aus einem Erdenkloß gebildet. Eingeprägt hat er ihm den Erdenstaub.

Wenn wir schon mancherlei gefunden haben, was uns staunen machte in scheuer Ehrfurcht vor dem, was uns die Bibel durch die alten Seher sagt und was wir wieder finden durch die geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung, hier in den Worten «Und Jahve-Elohim prägte der menschlichen Leiblichkeit den mondenhaften Erdenstaub ein», da haben wir eine Stelle, wo unsere Ehrfurcht eine große, eine gewaltige werden muß vor dem, was uns die alten Seher erzählen in dem Genesisbericht. Und wenn sich diese alten Seher bewußt waren, daß sie die Mitteilung dessen, was sie befähigte, solches zu sagen, aus den Regionen empfingen, in welchen die Elohim und Jahve-Elohim wirkten, wenn sie sich bewußt waren, daß sie ihre Weisheit empfingen aus den Regionen der weltschöpferischen Wesen selber, dann konnten sie sagen: In uns strömt ein als Wissen, als Weisheit, als Gedanke das, was das Erdenwerden selber gestaltet hat, indem es in diesen Wesen webte und wirkte. — Und so können wir in scheuer Ehrfurcht hinblicken zu den alten Sehern und zu der scheuen Ehrfurcht, mit der wiederum diese alten Seher hinaufblickten in die Regionen, aus denen ihnen ihre Offenbarung kam, in die Regionen der Elohim und des Jahve-Elohim. Wie hätten sie benennen können die Wesenheiten, die der Schöpfung und ihrem eigenen Erkennen zugrunde lagen? Was hätte es für ein Wort geben sollen für sie, wenn nicht das, von dem ihr ganzes Herz voll sein mußte, wenn sie aufnahmen die Offenbarung der weltschöpferischen Mächte? Sahen sie auf zu ihnen, so sagten sie: Uns fließt unsere Offenbarung von göttlich-geistigen Wesenheiten herunter. Wir können kein anderes Wort für sie finden als das, was unser Gefühl scheuer Ehrfurcht ausdrückt: «Diejenigen, vor denen wir scheue Ehrfurcht empfinden.» — Übersetzen wir das ins alte Hebräische. Wie lautet das: «Diejenigen, vor denen wir scheue Ehrfurcht empfinden»? Es lautet: «Elohim»! Das ist das Wort für diejenigen, vor denen man scheue Ehrfurcht empfindet. So haben Sie den Zusammenschluß der Empfindungen der alten Seher mit dem Namen der Weltwesen, denen sie die Schöpfung, denen sie ihre Offenbarung zuschrieben.

Tenth Lecture

In many places in these lectures, we have been able to point out how, if we understand it correctly, the report in Genesis reflects the results of spiritual research. It will now be our task to point out this correspondence in several more respects. First, we will show more precisely what time the Genesis actually refers to, taking into account what spiritual scientific research tells us about the origin of our Earth. I have already pointed this out in a certain sense by placing the beginning of Genesis, so to speak, at the moment when the sun and the earth were preparing to separate from each other, but we will have to go into this relationship in more detail.

Those of you who have heard various lectures over the years, and also those who have studied the description of the Earth's development in my “Secret Science,” will remember the significance attributed to two important moments in this development. The first is the separation of the sun from the Earth. This moment is very important. This separation of the sun from the earth had to take place at some point, because if the two world bodies had remained connected as they were at the beginning of the earth's formation, the progress of human evolution would not have been able to give human beings their true meaning on earth. Everything we call the sun, not only the elemental or physical aspects of the sun's body, but also all the spiritual beings belong to the solar body, all of this had to step out of the Earth, so to speak, or, if you prefer, the Earth had to push it away, because, to put it simply, the forces of those beings that moved their place of activity from the Earth to the Sun would have been too strong for humans to thrive if they had remained connected to the Earth. These beings had to weaken their forces, as it were, by moving away from the Earth's sphere and working from outside. Thus we have the moment when a number of beings move their sphere outward in order to weaken their effects and now intervene less strongly in human and animal development. From a certain moment on, we thus left the earth to its own devices, with a certain coarsening of its forces, for the finer, more spiritual forces separated from the earth with the sun. But human beings, in relation to the beings they had become through the Saturn, Sun, and Moon evolutions, remained united with the earth for a while after the separation from the sun. It was only highly exalted beings who moved their sphere of activity outward with the sun.

But when the earth was separated, it still had within itself everything that belongs to substantiality, to the forces of today's lunar evolution. So after the separation from the sun, we have an earth evolution that still has, so to speak, the lunar evolution within its body. Human beings were thus exposed to conditions that were much coarser than the actual conditions on Earth later became, for the moon has, so to speak, a coarse substance. The result was that after the separation of the sun from the Earth, the Earth became increasingly lunar in its forces, increasingly dense. A further consequence was that human beings were now exposed to a different danger, the danger of dying within themselves, of mummifying, albeit astral mummification. Whereas the conditions were, so to speak, too fine when the sun was still united with the earth, they now became too coarse. This meant that as the earth's development progressed, human beings were less and less able to thrive while maintaining their connection with the earth. All this is described in more detail in my “Secret Science.”

We know from yesterday's lecture that human beings at that time were spiritual-soul beings, but that in this spiritual-soul state they could not connect with what radiated from the Earth's matter into the Earth's sphere, because this became too coarse for them as long as the Moon was connected with the Earth. And so it came about that the vast majority of human souls had to sever their connection with the earth. This points to a significant event that took place in the relationship between man and the earth during the time between the separation of the sun and the moon. With the exception of a very small number, the human soul spirits took their leave of earthly conditions during this intermediate period and pushed their way up into higher regions. And according to their stage of development, these human soul spirits now continued their further development on the planets belonging to our Earth-Sun system. Certain soul spirits were predisposed to continue their development first on Saturn, others on Mars, still others on Mercury, and so on. Only a very small number of the strongest human soul spirits remained connected to the Earth. The others became inhabitants of the planetary neighbors of our Earth. This was at a time that, if we use the usual expression, preceded our Lemurian age. At that time, what we can call our human soul state underwent a development on the neighboring planets of our Earth.

Then came the other significant event, which we know took place during the Lemurian period, and through which the lunar substance with all its forces was removed from the Earth itself. The Moon left the Earth. This brought about enormous changes on Earth. Only now was the Earth brought to a state in which human beings could flourish. While the forces would have been too spiritual, so to speak, if the Earth had remained connected to the Sun, they would have become too coarse if the Earth had remained united with the Moon. Thus, the moon moved away, and the earth remained in a kind of state of equilibrium, which was brought about by the influence of the sun and moon from outside. And in this way, the earth prepared itself to become the bearer of human existence. All this happened during the Lemurian period.

Now development continues, and little by little a downward return, a downward flow of the human soul spirits who fled to the planetary neighbors of our Earth takes place. This is something that continued well into the Atlantean epoch, with souls constantly descending from the neighboring planets. And the development during the last Lemurian and during the Atlantean era took place in such a way that what crystallized as human beings was gradually endowed with soul spirits of various kinds, depending on whether these soul spirits came down from Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and so on. This brought great diversity into the earthly becoming of human beings. Those who are familiar with my last lectures in Christiania know that in this division into Mars, Saturn, and so on, there was something original that later led to the differentiation of the races. So this is where we must look for the diversity within the human race, and even today, if one has the eye for it, one can recognize in a human being whether his soul has descended from this or that planetary neighbor of our Earth.

But we have already emphasized this many times, and it is explained in detail in my “Secret Science” that by no means all human soul spirits have left the Earth. If we want to speak trivially, we may say that the most capable souls were able to continue using the Earth's material and remain connected to it. Yes, I have even pointed out that, surprisingly, there was a principal pair that survived the coarsening of Earth's conditions. What at first seems impossible to believe, the compulsion of spiritual research leads us to the conclusion that there was such a human pair as the Bible shows us in Adam and Eve, and that their descendants were joined by those human beings who came into being when their soul spirits descended from the universe to the earth.

When we consider all this, we approach a discussion that can tell us what, in our spiritual scientific language, is actually the time of which the Bible speaks. I would like to remind you that after the so-called six or seven days of creation are described in the Bible, there follows another description which the dilettantism of modern Bible research considers to be a second creation story, but which is in fact entirely accurate. I would like to remind you of some spiritual scientific findings. I have mentioned this frequently and also discussed it in more detail in my book “The Secret Science.” I have shown how the earth progressed from the Lemurian epoch to the Atlantean epoch, and how, during this progression, a kind of cooling of the physical earth took place. During the Lemurian period, we must basically think of the earth as a fiery being that still displays the element of fire sparkling everywhere within itself, and it is only with the transition to the Atlantean period that this cooling has taken place. I have pointed out that during the Atlantean epoch, what was above the earth's surface was very different from what it was later, that far, far into the Atlantean epochs, the earth was not surrounded by a water-free circle of air. The earth was covered with air completely filled with watery mist. What we know today as the separation of rain and rain-free air did not exist in those ancient times. Everything was enveloped in masses of water mist, which were saturated with all kinds of vapors and smoke and other substances that had not yet taken on a solid form at that time. Much of what is solid today was then still in vapor form, flowing through today's air circle. And until long into the Atlantean times, everything was permeated by such masses of water mist.

But these were also the times when what had previously existed in a much more spiritual state first took physical form. I have already pointed out that in the conditions we find recorded in the so-called third day of creation, we must not think that individual plant forms sprouted from the ground as we see them today, but that we must take into account the expression ” according to their kind”; that we are dealing more with generic souls that existed in an etheric-astral state within the Earth's body. Everything that is described to us from the third day of creation as the formation of plants would not have been visible to the outer senses; it would only have been perceptible to clairvoyant organs. As that misty state developed around the Earth from the Lemurian to the Atlantean epoch and the mists gradually cleared, what had previously been ethereal transformed into a state approaching what we know today. The etheric became more and more physical, and as wonderful as it sounds, for even geology today is often permeated by materialistic views, the plant beings visible to the outer eye developed much later than in the period designated as the so-called third day of creation. They only developed towards the Atlantean period. We cannot place the geological conditions necessary for today's plants in the very early stages of our research.

We could therefore characterize the transition from the Lemurian to the Atlantean epoch as follows: The earth was covered on all sides by dense masses of fog in which the smoke of various substances, which later transformed into the earth's crust, was still dissolved, and the beings of the appropriate species, which were visible to clairvoyant consciousness, had not yet achieved physical condensation. What we might call a fertilization of the earth with what was suspended in the air as water had not yet taken place. That came later. — How, then, could the Bible describe this at first? Well, it had to say at a very specific point: Even after the seven days of creation had passed, after the end of what coincides with the Lemurian epoch, our present-day physical plants had not yet sprouted from the earth; the earth was still covered with masses of mist.

The Bible describes the facts. If you read on after the seven days of creation, you will find it pointed out that, even though it was mentioned earlier that plant forms had arisen according to their species, there were still no herbs or shrubs on the earth. The first time, there is mention of the generic soul, the second time of what sprouts from the earth in physical individuality as plant growth. And the fog is appropriately described as the fog of Atlantis after the days of creation. The fact that the condensation of the air-water into rain only takes place then is indicated by the words “For Yahweh-Elohim had not yet caused it to rain.”

So there is a deep wisdom in these things. But I can assure you that nothing of what is written in this document has found its way into the presentation of my ”Secret Science.” I have deliberately kept away from the Bible, and I would like to say that there have been times when I have made a sincere effort to find these things elsewhere than in this document. It is, so to speak, a necessity in today's materialistic view of the Bible that one does not take it lightly to interpret the facts of spiritual science into the Bible. But it is the compulsion of spiritual science that has led us to find in the Bible what we are now able to say, and even if we resist, we are ultimately compelled to see in the Bible what visionary research has discovered.

Given these premises, we may ask ourselves: Where in the account of Genesis must we now place the departure of the spiritual-soul element, the departure of the soul spirits of human beings to the planetary bodies or beings neighboring the earth, which was caused by the coarsened state of the earth? We must place it where we are told that through the emergence of the sound ether—I have described this to you in detail in my account of the so-called second day of creation—the higher substantialities are separated from the lower ones. And when one follows all that is meant here with the eye of the seer, one says to oneself: With that which goes upward, which moves away from the earth, which is said to have been called “heaven” by the Elohim, the soul spirits of human beings also moved away. — Thus, the second day of creation coincides with a very specific time between the separation of the sun and moon from the earth, with the departure of the soul spirits of human beings into the surroundings of the earth.

Now, however, we must consider that this has a very important consequence. What is it that actually went out into space at that time? In other words, where do we find this in human beings today? In which members of the human being must we look for what once stepped out into the world space? Of course, it is not present today in the same way as it was then, but we can nevertheless draw parallels with certain members of the present human organization. Let us take a look at the human being. Today we divide the human being into the four familiar members: the physical body, the etheric body, the astral body, and the I-being. We know that of these four members, the physical and etheric bodies remain in bed during the nighttime state of sleep. When we speak of ancient times, to which the descriptions of the second and probably also the third day of creation apply, we cannot yet speak of the physical and etheric bodies as they are today. These only later emerged from the substance of the earth. What existed in humans at that time now essentially belongs to what emerges during the nightly sleep from the denser members of human nature, what we call the astral being of the human being. What we must first address when we consider the soul spirit of the human being who once took leave of the earth in order to flourish better on the surrounding planets is that which works as forces in our astral body. So what belongs to our forces when we are out of the physical and etheric bodies with our astral body, we must seek on the planets neighboring the earth after the second day of creation.

Now we know that when human beings today are in the state of night sleep, with their finer members outside the physical and etheric bodies, they are, so to speak, incorporated into the astral environment of our Earth, into the forces and currents of the members of our planetary system. In the state of nightly sleep, human beings are connected with the planetary beings. But we can also say that in those ancient times, human beings were not only connected with these outer planets in some state of nightly sleep, but that after their flight from the earth they were always connected with them. They remained on these planets. — We must therefore consider that during the period described to us as the third day of creation, with the exception of those enduring human soul spirits of which I have spoken, the human soul spirits were not on Earth at all, but in the environment around the planets, where they had taken up residence and continued to develop with them. Meanwhile, however, those who had remained behind as the strongest and most capable developed on Earth. Their development consisted in increasingly enveloping themselves in the material substance of the Earth, so that what we now have during the day as our etheric body and our physical body was also preformed down there on Earth, so to speak. In order that this etheric and physical body could participate in all situations of Earth's development, some soul spirits were preserved on Earth. In this way, what was to be formed for the etheric and physical bodies was propagated even while the lunar forces were connected with the Earth.

If we truly imagine the state after the separation of the sun, we must say that the greatest part of the human soul and spirit is in the vicinity of the earth on the neighboring planets. The sun had already separated from the earth, but if a human being had been able to stand on the earth at that time, he would have seen dense masses of fog, smoke, and vapor above the surface. He would not have seen any sun. The sun, which was far away with its forces, only gradually began to act upon the earth in such a way that these masses of smoke and mist cleared and gradually took on the shape necessary for the development of humanity around the earth. And only gradually would such a human being, who had been watching the development from outside, so to speak, have seen how the mists began to become lighter, how the masses of smoke became thinner, how the forces of the sun not only worked through the dark shell of smoke, but how they became truly perceptible, one might say visible. We are now approaching the fourth day of creation, and with it we are drawing ever closer to the event we call the separation of the moon. So that a human being who had lived on Earth at that time would actually have been able to see the sun's rays penetrating the masses of smoke and vapor. And as these conditions arose, the Earth gradually acquired those conditions that were conducive to becoming human, where human beings could once again live on Earth, where, so to speak, bodies could be created from the physical descendants of those who had survived for the soul spirits that were now returning from the orbit of the Earth.

So you have, I would say, two kinds of reproduction. That which later became the etheric and physical body of man comes from those who survived. The soul-spiritual comes in from the surrounding sphere. At first, this coming from the circle of our Earth's planetary neighbors was a spiritual influence. At the moment when the sun had, so to speak, penetrated the vapors and smoke surrounding the earth, when the moon had set, the urge arose in the soul spirits of the neighboring planets to descend once again into this region of the earth. As the sun became visible from the Earth on one side and the moon on the other, the forces of the souls streaming down to Earth also penetrated the Earth. Here you have the reality of what is described in the words of the so-called fourth day of creation: “And God made the greater light, the sun, and the lesser light, the moon, and the stars.” For the stars mean nothing other than the planetary neighbors of our Earth. The work that created a kind of balance was thus prepared on one side by the sun and on the other by the moon, and at the same time it prepared the descent of the human soul spirits who were striving to reincorporate themselves on Earth.

We have thus placed the fourth day of creation at the point in time during the Lemurian epoch, after the departure of the moon, when the conditions described in my “Secret Science” arose, which we can characterize by saying that the human soul spirits strive downward again toward the earth.

Now, however, we must consider the accompanying spiritual conditions a little. We have now considered more of what later became physical. We must become increasingly clear that everything coarser is based on something finer, that everything striving toward the physical is based on something spiritual. With the Sun, the Elohim essentially left the Earth in order to move their sphere of activity outward, to work from the orbit. But not all of them. Something of the Elohim remained united with the earth, so to speak, even when the earth still had the forces of the moon within it. And what remained united with the earth at that time from the spiritual forces of the Elohim is what is connected in a certain way with all the good effects of the forces of the moon. For we must also speak of the good effects of the forces of the moon. After the separation of the sun, everything on Earth, especially human beings, would have been driven into mummification, hardening, and lignification. Human beings would have died out on Earth. The Earth would have become desolate if it had retained the forces of the moon within itself. These forces of the moon would not have been beneficial within the Earth. Why did they have to remain with the Earth for a while? Because humanity had to survive all the stages of the Earth, so to speak, because humanity, in its most capable representatives, had to go through this lunar condensation. But then, when the Moon separated from the Earth, the forces that would otherwise have brought about the death of the Earth for human beings became beneficial. After the moon forces departed, everything was refreshed again, so that even the weaker souls could descend and incarnate in human bodies. Thus, the moon became the benefactor of the earth by becoming its neighbor. What it could never have been within the earth itself, it became as its neighbor. The beings who directed this whole series of events are the great benefactors of humanity. What beings were they? Well, those who were connected with the moon, who then tore the moon out of the earth, as it were, in order to continue the development of humanity within the earth. We know from the account in Genesis that the Elohim were the great directing forces. And what brought about this great and powerful fact of the moon's departure from these Elohim forces, and thereby brought about the actual essence of man, was nothing other than what had also brought about the cosmic advancement of the Elohim to Yahweh-Elohim, which raised the essence of the Elohim to Yahweh-Elohim. This remained united with the moon, and this also brought the moon out of our earth. Therefore, we may say that what we find as the body of the moon within our creation is intimately connected with what we call Yahweh-Elohim.

Now let us consider more closely what these conditions actually mean for man in his becoming earthly. If human beings had remained connected to an Earth that contained the sun within itself, they would have become beings that were essentially nothing. They would have simply remained connected to the essence of the Elohim and would not have been able to separate themselves into independent beings. But because the Elohim separated themselves from the Earth with their sun, human beings were able to remain connected to the Earth and eke out their soul-spiritual life. But if it had remained that way, human beings would have become hardened within themselves and would have found death. Why did human beings have to come into a state that even made death possible? So that they could become free, so that they could cut themselves off from the Elohim, so that they could become independent beings. In the lunar part, man has something within himself that actually brings about this dying, and he would have received too much of it, so to speak, if the moon had not separated from the earth. But nevertheless, you can see from this that it is this lunar aspect that, as cosmic substance, is intimately connected with human independence.

If you now consider the present state of the Earth, you must say to yourself: these conditions were actually brought about after the separation of the moon. So there is not as much of these lunar forces in it as there once was. But in terms of the constitution of his physical and etheric bodies, man has also survived the lunar period, the connection between the Earth and the Moon, and thus he has within himself what has been taken from the Earth. He carries something of what is up there on the moon within himself. He has preserved it beyond this time in his physical and etheric bodies. Thus, human beings have something lunar within themselves; they are connected with this lunar element. The earth could not have borne this lunar element within itself, but human beings have it within themselves in a certain way. They therefore have the predisposition to be something other than mere earthly beings.

If you think about all this, you will come to realize that we, as human beings, have the earth beneath us, so to speak, and that the moon had to be cast out of this earth. But it was only cast out after the right dose of its essence had been instilled into human beings themselves. The earth does not carry the moon within itself; we carry it within us. What would have become of the earth if the moon had not been torn out of it? — Look at the moon with different eyes than those with which it is so often viewed today. The entire constitution of its matter is different from that of the earth. In the gross material sense, astrophysicists say that the moon has no air, hardly any water, which means that it is much more densely packed than the earth. It therefore contains forces that would, so to speak, carry the Earth further beyond its current state of hardening, making it physically even harder. Physically harder and more rugged, these lunar forces would make the Earth. To get an idea of what the Earth would become if the forces of the moon were within it, just imagine a piece of earthy matter outside on the street, saturated with water, something like mud, for example. Imagine the water gradually draining away. The earthy matter will then become increasingly dusty. You can observe this whole process in your mind's eye, so to speak, when you see the muddy street material gradually turning to dust after rain. Something like this would have happened on a large scale with the Earth, its fragmentation into masses of dust, if the lunar forces had remained connected to it. Something like this will also happen to the Earth one day when it has fulfilled its task. It will be broken up into world dust. The earth's matter will dissolve into cosmic space as world dust when human beings have completed their development on it.

So we can say: The earth would have become dust; it had within itself the potential to become dust, to be broken up into dust particles. It has been protected from this premature disintegration into dust only by the fact that the moon was lifted out of it. — But something has remained in man of what actually has the potential to become dust. Through all the circumstances I have described to you, man takes into his being something of the moon-like earth dust. Those essences connected with the moon have thus actually added something to the human physical essence which is not, in the strict sense, from the earth mass that we have immediately around us after the moon separated, but rather they have imprinted something from the moon-like earth dust into the human physical body. But since Yahweh-Elohim is connected with this moon-like element, this means that Yahweh-Elohim is the one who imprinted the moon-like earth dust into human physicality. And we must say that in the course of Earth's development, a time had to come that can rightly be described as follows: In the cosmic advancement of the Elohim, the time came when Yahweh-Elohim imprinted the earth dust, the moon-like earth dust, into human physicality. — There you have the tremendous depth of that Bible passage where it says, “And Yahweh-Elohim formed man from the dust of the earth.” For that is what it says. And all the translations that speak of Yahweh-Elohim forming man from a lump of earth are utter nonsense. He imprinted the dust of the earth upon him.

If we have already found many things that have filled us with awe and reverence for what the Bible tells us through the ancient seers and what we find again through spiritual scientific research, here in the words “And Yahweh-Elohim imprinted the moon-like earth dust on the human body,” we have a passage where our reverence must become great, tremendous, before what what the ancient seers tell us in the Genesis account. And if these ancient seers were aware that they received the message of what enabled them to say such things from the regions where the Elohim and Jahve-Elohim were working, if they were aware that they received their wisdom from the regions of the world-creating beings themselves, then they could say: That which has shaped the earth itself, weaving and working in these beings, flows into us as knowledge, as wisdom, as thought. — And so we can look with reverent awe at the ancient seers and at the reverent awe with which these ancient seers in turn looked up to the regions from which their revelation came, to the regions of the Elohim and Yahweh-Elohim. How could they have named the beings that lay at the foundation of creation and their own knowledge? What word could there have been for them, if not the one that must have filled their whole hearts when they received the revelation of the world-creating powers? When they looked up to them, they said: Our revelation flows down to us from divine-spiritual beings. We can find no other word for them than that which expresses our feeling of reverential awe: “Those before whom we feel reverential awe.” Let us translate that into ancient Hebrew. How does that sound: “Those before whom we feel reverential awe”? It sounds like “Elohim”! That is the word for those before whom one feels reverential awe. Thus you have the combination of the feelings of the ancient seers with the name of the world beings to whom they attributed creation and to whom they attributed their revelation.
