The two lectures were given by Rudolf Steiner in September of 1919 at Stuttgart. They are lectures 16 and 17 of 17 lectures in the lecture series entitled, Spiritual Science & Social & Educational Questions, and published in German as, Geisteswissenschaftliche Behandlung Socialer und Paedagogischer Fragen.

The first lecture is also known as, The Necessity for a Spiritual Deepening through Freely Acquired Knowledge, or The Necessity for a Genuine Spiritual Deepening as the Result of Free Knowledge. The second lecture has been published as, The Rise of World Consciousness out of Earth Consciousness, or The Emergence of Cosmic Consciousness from Earth Consciousness, (vol. 192 in the Bibliographic Survey).
