Lecture XXIII (Recapitulation of Lesson IV)

My dear sisters and brothers,

It is not possible every time to give the corresponding introduction about the task and meaning of the School and about membership in the School. Therefore, although a large number of new members are again present, I will not give the introduction, but will continue from where we left off last time, and I must remind the members who are to give the previous mantras to the newcomers in the usual way, that they must to do so under the conditions which I will mention at the end of this lesson. They should also describe the conditions for acceptance in this School.


We shall begin by again letting our souls hear the words which are spoken by all the Beings and processes of the world to the human being who wishes to be worthy of the name, and who has an unbiased sense that in them lies the exhortation to seek true self-knowledge, a self-knowledge that leads to knowledge of the world. And we are exhorted from all sides, from all the Beings of all the kingdoms of nature and all the kingdoms of spirit to this self-knowledge in the true sense of the word, which is the path to world-knowledge. Thus, all the Beings of nature and of the spirit exhorted humans in the past, exhort them in the present, and will exhort humans in the future. These exhorting words that urge the soul of man, if he wants to hear them, from all sides, from the east and the west, from the south and the north, from above and below, may also today begin to describe what this Michael-School should mean:

O man, know thyself!
So resounds the Cosmic-Word.
You hear it strong in soul,
You feel it firm in spirit.

Who speaks with such cosmic might?
Who speaks with such depth of heart?

Does it work through distant radiant space
Into your senses' sense of being?
Does it ring through weaving waves of time
Into your life's evolving stream?

It's you yourself who,
In feeling space, in experiencing time,

Create the Word, feeling foreign
In the soulless void of space
Because you lose the force of thought
In time's destructive flow.


We have seen how the seeker of knowledge approaches the Guardian of the Threshold, how—after the seeker of knowledge has stood there shattered by the impression of the three beasts, which show the true nature of his present willing, feeling and thinking as they appear before the visage of the spiritual world—how he is gradually lifted up by the Guardian of the Threshold.

And we have already heard what the Guardian of the Threshold speaks to the one he wants to lift up, how he points, on the one hand, above, where a battle is taking place between the light and the dark powers in the realm from which the force of our thinking streams into our humanity. The Guardian of the Threshold thinks that we need this image. We need—if we wish to feel in the right way, by seeking knowledge, the origins of our thinking, the force of our thinking in our humanity—to look up to that realm from which our thinking comes, where however a terrible battle rages between the powers of light, the light which wants to guide thinking along the right track, and the powers of darkness, who want to divert thinking from the right track and lead it along paths of aberration. Our thinking is rooted above. We must know it to be so rooted if we want to be knowledgeable in the battle between light and darkness.

And then, if we understand what striving towards the light is, we find that we must remain erect. And we must know that we are involved with the battle between light and darkness: The light wants to bring us to a state of spiritual powerlessness, so to speak; the darkness wants to make us lose ourselves in matter. But we must seek the state of equilibrium between them—not letting ourselves be overtaken by light, nor letting the darkness transform us into matter, but to stand firmly in our selfhood and find the equilibrium for our thinking between light and darkness.


And then when we consider our feeling, we must see—in that realm which reaches out into the horizontal, into the cosmic distances—how we are involved in the battle between the warmth of soul and the coldness of soul.

In the warmth of soul are working all the luciferic powers, the powers of beauty, the powers of brightness, the powers who want to give us divine forces without our own effort. We would be unfree and lacking independence if they were to catch us.

But on the other side are the powers of cold, the coldness of soul that is permeated by ahrimanic Beings who would cause us to lose our Selves in the cold. We must find the equilibrium between that spiritual blissfulness into which the forces of warmth, the forces of heat, of fire wish to bring us, and that region into which, with enormous all-embracing intellectuality, the ahrimanic powers wish to seduce us with coldness. We must maintain our equilibrium between both of them in order to find the right sense of feeling for knowledge.


Then, when we observe our willing, we must look below. There is the realm of the earth and of gravity from which the force of our will comes for our earthly life. For the earth does not only contain the force of gravity; spiritually, it also contains the force of human will. Once again, we stand face to face with two powers—the powers of life and the powers of death. We can succumb with our willing to the powers of life. Then it is as though the powers of life want to seize us, use our will forces in the cosmos. We must hold our Self erect, and find the equilibrium between these powers of life and the powers of death, the latter wanting to confine us in a constricted space in order to eternally interweave our will with materiality.


The Guardian of the Threshold exhorts us at this point to maintain ourselves in equilibrium between light and darkness, in equilibrium between warmth and cold, in equilibrium between life and death. For we may not only belong to the power of the light. In light alone we would be benumbed, dazzled. We may not devote ourselves to the darkness alone, for then we would lose ourselves in the substance of darkness. We must strive for what is striven for in all the world.

Wherever you look, my sisters and brothers, light and darkness intermingle. Look at your hair. The light plants it in your head. But it must be permeated with darkness, otherwise your hair would be entirely rays of light. Look at your whole body: it is woven of light. But it could have no solidity if darkness were not also interwoven in it. Look at any object, my sisters and brothers! Blossoming plants: they are created from light; but the powers of darkness must press up from the soil so that from light and darkness what the plants represent in their solid consistency—the nature of plants on earth—can be found.

Just as in all of nature a balance between light and darkness is found, so must the human being strive psychically for it in the spiritual world if he wants to be a real seeker after knowledge. And it is also the case for equilibrium between warmth and cold, and for equilibrium between life and death.


So, there we are at the yawning abyss of being, still looking, as behind us the gleaming colorful kingdoms of nature, to which we belong with our senses, become darker and darker as it becomes clear to us that our real being is not revealed by all of wondrous sensory nature, nor is it what leads us to self-knowledge. In front of us, like a black wall, is still the border of the dark realm, into which we must go so that there will be light within by means of the force which we ourselves bring. We are still standing at the yawning abyss of being, but have become bolder in confidence that through the Guardian's admonitions we will grow wings to cross the abyss in order to enter the darkness, and there is light in the darkness.

This is one of the last of the Guardian's admonitions:

The light does battle with powers of darkness
In that realm, where your thinking
In spirit-being longs to enter.
You find, striving lightward,
Your Self, taken from you by spirit;
You can, when darkness entices you,
The Self in matter lose.

The warmth does battle with the cold
In that realm, where your feeling would
In spirit-interweaving live.
You find, loving warmth, your Self
In spirit-longing blown away;
You can, if cold does harden you,
The Self in sorrow grind to dust.

Thus, life does battle with death
In that realm where your will
Would act with spiritual creation.
You find, holding on to life,
Your Self vanishing in spirit's power;
If death's power binds you fast,
You may constrict the Self to nothing.

The Guardian at the abyss exacting equilibrium:

The light does battle with powers of darkness
In that realm where your thinking
In spirit-being longs to enter.
You find, striving lightward,
Your Self, taken from you by spirit;
You can, when darkness entices you,
The Self in matter lose.

The warmth does battle with the cold
In that realm, where your feeling would
In spirit-interweaving live.
You find, loving warmth, your Self
In spirit-longing blown away;
You can, if cold does harden you,
The Self in sorrow grind to dust.

Thus, life does battle with death
In that realm, where your will
Would act with spiritual creation.
You find, holding on to life,
Your Self vanishing in spirit's power;
If death's power binds you fast,
You may constrict the Self to nothing.

You will find, my dear sisters and brothers, that if you devote yourselves to these mantric worlds with the right conviction and with peace in your souls, with a feeling of sacrificial devotion to the spirit, you will find that what instills equilibrium in the soul is present in the words themselves.

As seekers after knowledge, we stand now before the Guardian of the Threshold at the yawning abyss of being. Next the Guardian of the Threshold teaches us how we, in wanting to choose the right direction between light and darkness, warmth and cold, life and death, can find our own Self.

In no other way can we do this, my dear sisters and brothers, than by pondering the following: In order to achieve true knowledge it is necessary that we become one with the world, that we have a feeling respecting the world as a finger would if it could feel for itself, feel itself to be a part of the entire human body. If the finger could feel for itself it would say: I am only a finger as long as I am a part of the human body, when the human body's blood is my blood, when the human body's pulsation is my pulsation. If I am cut off, I cease being a finger. The finger loses its meaning when separated from the organism to which it belongs and only as part of which it can be a finger.

The human being must learn to feel in this way in respect to the entire world. We are members of the spirit-soul organism of the entire world, and only seem to be separated from the spirit-soul organism of the world. We must connect in the right way to the spirit-soul organism of the world and must know that around us the elements earth, water, air, fire are spread, and we must learn to feel that our bodily nature—for it is composed of these elements—is at one with these elements.

The Guardian of the Threshold teaches us that we should do this, and how. Just consider exactly what learning streams in those mantric verses the Guardian of the Threshold has given us, which have brought us to the abyss of being.

My dear sisters and brothers, think that you tentatively touch some object with your finger. You know that the object is there where you touch it. You touch an object. You have the feeling of being at one with this object, because at the moment you touch it the sense of touch is what makes a finger, or whatever you touch it with, at one with the object. Now think that you as a whole are like a finger, a touching finger. You are standing on the earth, on the element earth. You are standing here because the earth's main property is the element of gravity. You are touching the earth with the soles of your feet, regardless of whether you are standing on the floor of a room or outside on the bare earth. The point is that you feel, in standing, that you are touching the earth's gravitational element. You could be standing above on a mountain, or on a tower: you sense—just as you sense at the tip of your finger the hard and the soft, the warm and the cold—in the process of touching you sense the unity in your soles of your feet, where you sense the weight of gravity.

The Guardian of the Threshold says this when he admonishes us in the following way:

O man, touch within your body's entire being
How earthly forces support you in existence.

That earthly forces are our support, that the earthly element supports us so we don't sink down, is what the Guardian of the Threshold is telling us now.

Then he leads us further, so that we not only feel that we are like a whole finger, but that we also feel what is within the finger: it is the element of water, of fluid. For everything which is in the human being—something also known by physical science—is born from the fluid element. Solid is isolated from fluid, as ice is from water. We must rise to the sensation of the element of water. Out in the world everything is of a fluid nature. Our own formative forces are formed in us by the fluid element. Just as we feel the earth as our support, we also feel, in that we feel our organs, that we are formed as human beings out of the fluid element. It creates the formative forces for us. Our lungs and our livers are solidly formed, but they solidify from out of the fluid element, from out of the element of water. Just as we feel the earth to be our support, we also feel, in that we feel our organs, that the water element forms us as human beings. The water forces are our sculptors; the earth is our support. Therefore, the Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O man, experience in the circle of your touch

(We can touch everywhere, but when we feel the touching itself ...)

O man, experience in the circle of your touch,
How water-beings are your being's sculptors.

Now the Guardian of the Threshold continues to admonish us. He teaches us how we can also unite with the powers of air. We breathe in the air. We know that if we breathe in the air in the wrong way we feel it; so, it has to do with our feelings. We have feelings that make us fearful, that breech the coherence of our existence. Just as the water element shapes us, so do does the air element care for us. The Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O man, now feel in all your life's interweaving
How powers of air are your caregivers in existence.

Now the Guardian leads us farther on to the warmth element. We feel ourselves united internally with warmth. We feel the earth outside of us as support. We know little about how the water forces shape us, during growth, for example; that stays in the subconscious. The powers of air thrust themselves in only when they are abnormal, when they don't work normally. But we feel united with warmth when we have the right amount in us. Our souls and our whole being become warm when we feel warmth from without. We stiffen when we must experience cold from without. Warmth and cold are at one with us in a completely different way in the elemental world. There they are neither merely supporters, nor our sculptors, nor our caregivers—they are our true helpers in physical existence. The Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O man, think in all the streams of feeling,
How fire-powers are helpers in your existence.

If we heed all that is entailed in these demands, we will find the path to conscious unification of our corporeality with the elements. And in different degrees our corporeality is one with the elements. At first the earth-element supports us in an exterior, mechanical way. The earth-element is support for us; it is mechanical and exterior. It will become more inward, but still consists of formations which do not reach the soul; water-beings form us, are our “sculptors”. When we become one with the air-elements, we rise to the level of morality. The air-element is no longer a mere exterior designer, it is our caregiver. And our feelings are of anxiety if we do not breathe in the right way. The powers of air are “caregivers”; warmth and cold are “helpers”, enabling us to be earthly beings. They are fire-powers, now wholly at the moral level.


The summation of the Guardian of the Threshold's admonitions with respect to the escalation of the elements:

O man, observe yourself in the elemental kingdom.

The Guardian's teaching:

O man, touch within your body's entire being
How earthly forces support you in existence.

O man, experience in all the circle of your touch,>
How water-beings are your being's sculptors.

O man, now feel in all your life's interweaving
How powers of air are your caregivers in existence.

O man, think in all the streams of feeling,
How fire-powers are helpers in your existence.

We have here the escalation [the words are underlined on the blackboard.]: “support”, “sculptors”, “caregivers”, “helpers”.

We also have another escalation. For in a mantric verse every word is in the right place, and there is no word there that only serves to fill an empty space. Everything coincides with its inner meaning with which we should unite ourselves in meditation on the mantric verse. We have an escalation [underlined on the blackboard] “touch”, “experience”, “feel”, “think”. It is a special escalation. So in meditation we must also sense the inner, meaningful structure of such a mantric verse.

Once the Guardian has said this, he sums it up again in one line:

[It is written on the blackboard:]

O man, observe yourself in the elemental kingdom.

Thus, the Guardian leads us to an inner experience of the verses, through which we can unite our corporeality with the elements to which it belongs.


Then he guides us further on to the soul. Here he doesn't point us to the elements earth, water, air, fire; here he points us to the planets. He points out to us how we should feel about what mutually draws the planets' orbits around the earth, how one planet or another draws the orbit. The orbits have a relationship and speak to each other when the human being rises in his soul to this secret of the universe-pointing, planetary powers. Then he lives with his soul in the spiritual kingdom of the cosmos, just as he had previously lived with his body in the elemental kingdom. We can only psychically feel to be at one with the cosmos if we bring ourselves to live into the kingdom of the planets and their orbits. The Guardian of the Threshold tells us this with these words:

O man, let rule within your depths of soul
The universe-pointing planetary powers.

O man, let rule within your depths of soul
The universe-pointing planetary powers.

Again, the Guardian of the Threshold sums up the direction-giving forces in these two lines for how the soul can feel to be at one with the secrets of the planets:

O man, become yourself...
(which means: make yourself existent)
... through the cosmic orbits.

The cosmic orbits of the various planets are drawn together into one cosmic orbit. We have thereby felt body and soul to be at one with the cosmos: the body with the earthly elements, the soul with the planets.

If we want the spirit to feel at one with the universe, we can neither look to the elements nor to the secrets of the planets, rather must we look to the stars. For there is the power with which we must feel our spirit to be at one with in the distant universe, if we wish to feel ourselves to be members of this universe in the true sense. There the cosmos begins to intone the music of the spheres. Therefore, the Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O man, preserve within your spirit's creation
The planets' words proclaimed in heaven.

O man, preserve within your spirit's creation
The planets' words proclaimed in heaven.

Again, the Guardian of the Threshold summarizes the requirement in one line:

O man, create yourself through heaven's wisdom.

Every moment our spiritual existence is a creation of our Self.

[It is written on the blackboard.]

At every moment our spiritual existence is a creation of our Self.

If we sense and feel this in the right way, we are internalized by the Guardian of the Threshold. We recall how the words of self-knowledge were intoned from all creation still in an abstract form, how they rang out to us from all sides of natural and spiritual existence. But now the phrase: “O man, know thyself”, is clarified in all its parts. It now consists of one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine parts.

“O man, know thyself” should be seen as nine rays of light, so to speak. Then it will be filled with what our meditation needs.

That is how we should feel. And, in a certain sense, we should pledge to the Guardian of the Threshold that we will adhere to his admonition:

O man, touch within your body's entire being
How earthly forces support you in existence.

O man, experience in all the circle of your touch,
How water-beings are your being's sculptors.

O man, now feel in all your life's interweaving
How powers of air are your caregivers in existence.

O man, think in all the streams of feeling,
How fire-powers are helpers in your existence.

O man, observe yourself in the elemental kingdom.

O man, let rule within your depths of soul
The universe-pointing planetary powers.

O man, become yourself through the cosmic orbits.

O man, preserve within your spirit's creation
The planets' words proclaimed in heaven.

O man, create yourself through heaven's wisdom.

We make a kind of pledge to the Guardian of the Threshold that we will always adhere to his admonitions, letting them run through our soul as mantras.

Again, and again we look back, and at every step we feel bound to remember what is happening on this side of the threshold. And on this side of the threshold every stone and every plant, every tree, every cloud, every spring, every rock, every lightning, every thunder has called to us:

O man, know thyself!
So resounds the Cosmic-Word.
You hear it strong in soul,
You feel it firm in spirit.

Who speaks with such cosmic might?
Who speaks with such depth of heart?

Does it work through distant radiant space
Into your senses' sense of being?
Does it ring through weaving waves of time
Into your life's evolving stream?

It's you yourself who,
In feeling space, in experiencing time,

Create the Word, feeling foreign
In the soulless void of space
Because you lose the force of thought
In time's destructive flow.


Thus, when these words of the Guardian of the threshold ring out with full spiritual force in this room—words which he as the serving member of Michael's power, the reigning power of our time—when these words ring out we can be certain, because this esoteric school has been founded by Michael's might itself, that Michael is present with his force, with his spirit, with his love, that Michael is psycho-spiritually present among us.

And that can be confirmed—here where responsibility is felt by the leadership of the School towards the power of Michael—that nothing else streams through this School than what is present in the holy will of Michael. It may be confirmed by Michael's sign and Michael's seal; this Michael-Sign [in red]:

and the Michael-seal, which confirms that Michael-Power enters into the true Rosicrucian training and is thus conjoined with what is being taught in the Michael School with Michael's seal, which the Rosicrucian endowment seals in the Rosicrucian verse accompanied by the seal-signs:

and that means:

I revere the Father

[first seal gesture]

“I revere the Father”: in saying “Ex deo nascimur”, this feeling passes through our soul;

“I love the Son”: in saying “In Cristo morimur”, this feeling passes silently through our soul;

“I unite with the Spirit”: is silently felt when saying “Per spiritum sanctum reviviscimus”.

The mantric verses come to you, my sisters and brothers, with the sign and seal of Michael:

Only those who have been accepted as members of this School may possess the verses which are imparted here. Those who cannot be present during a lesson when verses have been given, may receive them from those who have received them in the School itself. However, in order to receive the verses, permission must first be granted by either Dr. Wegman or by me. The request to Dr. Wegman or to me can only be made by the one who wants to give the verses to another. Therefore, the one who wants to receive them should not request them; it would serve no purpose. He can go to someone and ask that he be given them; but the one who gives them must ask permission in every case. This is not an administrative rule, but an occult arrangement which must be followed, because the handing over must begin with this real act.

The request may not be done in writing—it has happened, so I must be clear about it—but must be done orally, except when exceptional circumstances make an oral understanding impossible. Least of all in esoteric matters should even the hint of bureaucracy exist. Everything must be alive, just as it should be in the Anthroposophical Society.

Furthermore, whoever writes down more than the verses is obliged to keep what has been written for only one week and then to burn it. For it is not good that they somehow remain longer. They can go in all possible directions. Esoteric material must be handled in this way; it is not an arbitrary rule. In esoterica, everything is determined from true occult foundations. And if esoteric mantric verses are revealed in an incorrect way by the members who have the right because they either received the verses here during a lesson or by the correct way as described—if they are received by others in an incorrect way, they lose all their spiritual force. That is an occult law. And in the spiritual world there are laws which may not be ignored without punishment. So, this is not an arbitrary rule, but one which obeys an occult law.


Now for some announcements. Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. the course about Pastoral Medicine will continue, then at 12 noon the course for Speech Formation and drama; in the afternoon at 3:30 p.m. the course for Theologians. At 5 p.m. there will be an eurythmy performance. The next Esoteric Lesson, in which the Michael teachings will be rounded out, will take place on Monday at 8:30.

Vierte Wiederholungsstunde

Meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder! Es ist nicht möglich, jedes Mal hier die entsprechende Einleitung zu sprechen über Aufgabe und Bedeutung der Schule und über das Wesen der Mitgliedschaft zur Schule. Trotzdem heute wiederum eine ganze Anzahl neuer Mitglieder hier sind, ist es doch so, dass ich diese Einleitung nicht sprechen werde, sondern fortfahren werde an derjenigen Stelle, an welcher wir das letzte Mal stehen geblieben sind, und diejenigen Mitglieder, welche in dem üblichen Sinne an die Neuaufzunehmenden die bisher vorgekommenen mantrischen Sprüche zu geben haben, ich verpflichten muss, dass sie unter den Bedingungen, die ich dann am Schlusse zu erwähnen haben werde, mit der Übergabe dieser Sprüche auch von den Bedingungen sprechen, welche mit der Aufnahme in die Schule verknüpft sind.


Wir beginnen damit, dass wir wiederum diejenigen Worte uns vor die Seele treten lassen, welche aus allen Wesen der Welt, aus allen Vorgängen der Welt so sprechen zu dem Menschen, der einen unbefangenen Sinn dafür hat, dass darinnen die Aufforderung liegt, das Leben des Menschen, der des Menschennamens wert sein will, zu suchen durch wahre Selbsterkenntnis, Selbsterkenntnis, die zur Welterkenntnis führt. Und eigentlich fordern uns ja von allen Seiten her alle Wesen aus allen Reichen der Natur und aus allen Reichen des Geistes auf zu dieser im wahren Sinne des Wortes gehaltenen Selbsterkenntnis, die der Weg der Welterkenntnis ist. So forderten auf alle Wesen der Natur und des Geistes die Menschen in der Vergangenheit, so in der Gegenwart, so werden sie die Menschen auffordern in der Zukunft. Diese auffordernden Worte, die von allen Seiten der Welt, von Ost und West, von Süd und Nord, von oben und unten an des Menschen Seele herandringen, wenn er sie hören will, sie mögen auch heute beginnen dasjenige, was diese Michael-Schule Euren Herzen, Euren Seelen bedeuten soll:

O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!
So tönt das Weltenwort.
Du hörst es seelenkräftig,
Du fühlst es geistgewaltig.

Wer spricht so weltenmächtig?
Wer spricht so herzinniglich?

Wirkt es durch des Raumes Weitenstrahlung
In deines Sinnes Seinserleben?
Tönt es durch der Zeiten Wellenweben
In deines Lebens Werdestrom?

Bist du es selbst, der sich
Im Raumesfühlen, im Zeiterleben
Das Wort erschafft, dich fremd
Erfühlend in Raumes Seelenleere,
Weil du des Denkens Kraft
Verlierst im Zeitvernichtungsstrome.

Wir haben gesehen, wie herangetreten wird von dem nach Erkenntnis Suchenden an den Hüter der Schwelle, wie - nachdem der nach Erkenntnis Suchende zerschmettert dagestanden hat unter dem Eindrucke der drei Tiere, die vor dem Antlitz der geistigen Welt die wahre Gestalt seines jetzigen Wollens, Fühlens und Denkens darstellen -, wie der nach Erkenntnis Suchende aufgerichtet wird nach und nach von dem Hüter der Schwelle.

Und schon haben wir vernommen, was der Hüter der Schwelle spricht zu dem, den er also aufrichten will, wie er ihn hinweist auf der einen Seite nach oben, hinweist darauf, wie da kämpft in dem Reiche, aus dem die Kraft unseres Denkens in unser Menschenwesen strömt, das Licht mit finstren Mächten. Der Hüter der Schwelle meint: Dies Bild brauchen wir. Wir brauchen es, dass - wenn wir den Ursprung unseres Denkens, die Kraft unseres Denkens in unserem Menschenwesen in der richtigen Weise erkenntnissuchend fühlen wollen -, dass wir dann hinaufschauen in jene Reiche, aus denen unser Denken kommt, wo aber einen furchtbaren Kampf führen die Mächte des Lichtes, jenes Lichtes, das das Denken in die richtigen Bahnen bringen will, mit den Mächten der Finsternis, die das Denken abbringen wollen von den richtigen Bahnen, es in Irrwege führen möchten. Da oben ist unser Denken verwurzelt. Wir müssen es verwurzelt wissen, wenn wir Erkennende werden wollen, mit dem Kampf zwischen Licht und Finsternis.

Und dann finden wir, wenn wir lichtwärts zu streben verstehen, uns noch immer so, dass wir uns aufrechterhalten müssen. Und wir müssen wissen, dass wir hineingestellt sind in den Kampf zwischen Licht und Finsternis: Das Licht will uns hinnehmen sozusagen in eine geistige Lichtohnmacht, die Finsternis will uns hinnehmen und uns im Stoff uns verirren lassen. Wir aber müssen den Gleichgewichtszustand zwischen beiden suchen: nicht uns vom Lichte hinnehmen lassen, nicht uns von der Finsternis in Stoff verwandeln lassen, sondern, fest in unserer Eigenheit stehend, das Gleichgewicht finden für unser Denken zwischen Licht und Finsternis.

Wiederum, wenn wir unser Fühlen betrachten, da müssen wir sehen - in jenem Reiche, das mehr im Horizontalen, in den Weltenweiten wirkt und lebt -, wie wir hineingestellt sind in den Kampf zwischen Seelenwärme und Seelenkälte.

In der Seelenwärme wirken alle luziferischen Mächte, die Mächte der Schönheit, die Mächte der Helligkeit, die Mächte, welche uns ohne unser Zutun geben möchten alle göttlichen Kräfte. Wir würden unselbstständig und unfrei werden, wenn sie uns in sich auffangen würden.

Aber auf der anderen Seite stehen die Mächte der Kälte, der Seelenkälte, die von ahrimanischen Wesenheiten durchsetzt sind, die uns in der Kälte das Verlieren unseres Selbstes bringen möchten. Wir müssen wiederum das Gleichgewicht finden zwischen jener Geisteslust, in welche uns die Mächte der Wärme, der Hitze, des Feuers bringen möchten, und denjenigen Regionen, in denen in Kälte, mit ungeheurer Intellektualität, mit einer alles überragenden Intellektualität überzeugend, versucherisch überzeugend die ahrimanischen Mächte führen möchten. Zwischen beiden müssen wir wiederum, um das rechte Fühlen für die Erkenntnis zu finden, uns im Gleichgewichte halten.

Dann, wenn wir auf unser Wollen sehen: Nach unten müssen wir blicken. Da ist das Reich der Erde und der Schwere, aus dem zunächst für unser Erdenleben auch die Kraft unseres Wollens kommt. Denn die Erde hat in sich nicht nur die Kraft der Schwere, sie hat geistig in sich die Kraft des Wollens im Menschen. Wiederum stehen wir zwei Mächten gegenüber, den Mächten des Lebens und den Mächten des Todes. Wir können verfallen mit unserem Wollen den Mächten des Lebens. Da ist es dann, als ob die Mächte des Lebens uns ergreifen möchten. Sie möchten durch unsere Willenskräfte wollen im kosmischen Zusammenhange. Wir müssen unser Selbst aufrechterhalten, mittendurch die Gleichgewichtslage finden zwischen diesen Mächten des Lebens und den Mächten des Todes, die uns verkrampfen möchten, um unser Wollen in das stoffliche Gestalten ewig hineinzuverweben.

Der Hüter der Schwelle fordert uns an dieser Stelle auf, uns zwischen Licht und Finsternis in der Gleichgewichtslage, zwischen Wärme und Kälte in der Gleichgewichtslage, zwischen Leben und Tod in der Gleichgewichtslage zu halten. Denn nicht das Licht allein ist die Macht, der wir zugehören dürfen; im Lichte allein würden wir betäubt werden, geblendet werden. Nicht die Finsternis allein ist dasjenige, dem wir uns verschreiben dürfen, denn da würden wir uns an den Stoff des Finsteren verlieren. Dasjenige, was wir anstreben müssen, ist auf geistige Art dasjenige, was in aller Welt angestrebt wird.

Wo Ihr hinschaut, meine Schwestern und Brüder, wirken ineinander Licht und Finsternis. Schauet an Eure Haare: Das Licht setzt sie Euch ein in Euren Kopf; aber die Finsternis muss sie durchdringen, sonst würden die Haare lediglich Lichtstrahlen sein. Scht Ihr Euch an Euren ganzen Körper: Vom Lichte ist er gewoben; aber er würde nicht auf Erden Festigkeit haben können, wenn nicht die Finsternis hineinverwoben wäre. Seht Euch an jeglichen Gegenstand, meine Schwestern und Brüder! Die blühenden Pflanzen: Von dem Lichte sind sie geschaffen; doch aus dem Boden heraufdringen müssen die Mächte der Finsternis, damit aus Licht und Finsternis dasjenige, was die Pflanzen in ihrer festen Konsistenz darstellen als Wesen auf Erden, auftreten kann.

So wie in aller Natur gefunden wird der Ausgleich zwischen Licht und Finsternis, so muss der Mensch es seelenhaft in der geistigen Welt anstreben, wenn er ein wirklich Erkenntnis-Suchender sein will. Und so ist es mit dem Gleichgewichtsstreben zwischen Wärme und Kälte, so ist es mit dem Gleichgewichtsstreben zwischen Leben und Tod.

Und so stehen wir am gähnenden Abgrund des Seins, schauen noch immer - indem hinter uns die farbenerglänzenden Reiche der Natur, denen wir mit unseren Sinnen angehören, immer finsterer und finsterer werden, indem uns klar wird, aus alldem leuchtenden Sinnlichen kommt nicht heraus dasjenige, was unser eigenes Wesen ist, was uns zur Selbsterkenntnis führt -: Vor uns ist noch wie eine schwarze Wand die Grenze des finsteren Reiches, in das wir hinein müssen, damit es Licht darinnen wird durch die Kraft, die wir selber hineinbringen. Wir stehen noch am gähnenden Abgrund des Seins, haben aber schon etwas Mut gewonnen, dass durch die Mahnungen des Hüters uns Flügel wachsen werden, den Abgrund zu übersetzen, damit wir in die Finsternis hineinkommen und es Licht werde in der Finsternis.

Das eben ist eine der letzten Mahnungen, die der Hüter der Schwelle uns gibt und die da lautet:

Es kämpft das Licht mit finstern Mächten

Man wird finden, meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, wenn man mit rechter Gesinnung und rechtem Sinn sich gerade diesen mantrischen Worten hingibt in innerer Seelenruhe, in voller innerer Opferempfindung für die Hingabe des Geistes, man wird finden, dass in den Worten selbst dasjenige liegt, was in die Gleichgewichtslage die Seele hineinbringt.

Nun stehen wir als Erkenntnissuchende vor dem Hüter der Schwelle am gähnenden Abgrund des Seins. Der Hüter der Schwelle gibt uns als das Nächste eine Belehrung darüber, wie wir, indem wir die Richtung einschlagen wollen zwischen dem Licht und der Finsternis, dem Warmen und dem Kalten, dem Leben und dem Tode, uns aufrecht in unserem eigenen Selbst finden können.

Wir können es nicht anders, meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, als wenn wir uns recht darauf besinnen: Um zur wirklichen Erkenntnis zu kommen, ist es notwendig, dass wir eins werden mit der Welt, dass wir ein Gefühl bekommen gegenüber der Welt, wie der Finger, wenn er fühlen könnte für sich, das Gefühl hätte gegenüber dem ganzen Menschenleibe. Würde der Finger fühlen können für sich, so würde er sich sagen: Ich bin nur solange Finger, als ich am Menschenleibe bin, als das Blut des Menschenleibes mein Blut ist, als die Pulsation des Menschenleibes meine Pulsation ist; schneidet man mich ab: Ich höre auf, ein Finger zu sein. — Der Finger verliert seinen Sinn in Trennung vom Organismus, zu dem er gehört und an dem er allein Finger sein kann.

So muss der Mensch fühlen lernen gegenüber der ganzen Welt. Wir sind ein Glied am geist-seelenhaften Organismus der ganzen Welt, sind nur scheinbar als Menschen abgetrennt von dem geistseelenhaften Organismus der Welt, müssen uns in der rechten Weise mit dem geist-seelenhaften Organismus der Welt zusammenfinden, müssen zunächst wissen: Da sind um uns herum ausgebreitet die Elemente Erde, Wasser, Luft, Feuer. Und wir müssen lernen, uns eins zu fühlen unserer Leiblichkeit nach - denn diese ist gegliedert aus diesen Elementen -, uns eins zu fühlen mit diesen Elementen.

Der Hüter der Schwelle gibt uns die Lehre, wie wir das sollen und wie wir das können. Bedenkt jetzt genau dasjenige, was einfließt in jene belehrenden mantrischen Sprüche, die an dieser Stelle unseres Vorrückens bis zum Abgrund des Seins der Hüter der Schwelle uns gibt.

Meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, denkt Ihr Euch, Ihr stoßet mit dem Finger tastend an irgendeinen Gegenstand. Ihr wisst, der Gegenstand ist da, wo Ihr hinstoßt. Ihr tastet an einen Gegenstand. Ihr habt im Gefühle das Einssein mit diesem Gegenstand; denn in dem Augenblick, wo Ihr antastet an einen Gegenstand, ist eine Tastempfindung dasjenige, was einen Finger oder womit Ihr sonst tastet, eins macht mit dem Gegenstande. Nun denkt Ihr Euch, Ihr seid im Ganzen wie ein Finger, wie ein tastendes Glied. Ihr steht auf der Erde, auf dem Element Erde; Ihr steht, weil die Erde als ihre hauptsächlichste Eigenschaft das Element der Schwere hat. Ihr tastet mit Euren Fußsohlen auf die Erde, ganz gleichgültig, ob Ihr auf einem Zimmerparkettboden oder woanders steht draußen auf der freien Erde. Es kommt darauf an, dass Ihr fühlet im Stehen das Tasten an der Schwere des Erdenelementes. Ihr könnet auf dem Berge oben stehen, auf einem Turm: Ihr empfindet - wie Ihr am Ende Eures Fingers empfindet das Harte und Weiche, das Warme und Kalte -, im Tastprozess empfindet Ihr Eure Einheit, wenn Ihr Euch im Ganzen als Finger denkt, an Euren Fußsohlen, wo Ihr die Schwere empfindet. Das sagt der Hüter der Schwelle, indem er ermahnt, in der folgenden Weise:

O Mensch, ertaste in deines Leibes ganzem Sein,
Wie Erdenkräfte dir im Dasein Stütze sind.

Dass Erdenkräfte unsere Stütze sind, dass das Erdenelement uns stützt, damit wir nicht versinken, das sagt uns der Hüter der Schwelle an dieser Stelle.

Aber dann führt er uns weiter, wenn wir nun fühlen nicht nur, wie wir als ganzer Finger unten aufstehen, sondern wenn wir nun dasjenige, was im Innern des Fingers ist, fühlen: Es ist zunächst das Wasserelement, das Flüssige. Denn alles, was im Menschen ist - das ist selbst äußerlich mit physischer Wissenschaft zu verfolgen -, ist aus dem flüssigen Elemente herausgeboren. Das Feste ist erst aus dem Flüssigen abgeschieden, wie das Eis aus dem Wasser. Wir müssen aufsteigen zum Erfühlen des zweiten Elementes. Da draußen ist überall das Flüssige in der Welt. In uns werden unsere eigenen Bildekräfte aus dem flüssigen Elemente heraus geformt. Es formen uns die Bildekräfte. Unsere Lunge, unsere Leber sind fest geformt, aber sie erstarren aus dem flüssigen Elemente heraus. So, wie wir die Erde fühlen als Stütze, so fühlen wir, indem wir unsere Organe fühlen, aus dem Wasserelemente heraus uns als Mensch gebildet. Die Wasserkräfte sind unsere Bildner; die Erde ist unsere Stütze. Deshalb ermahnt uns der Hüter der Schwelle:

O Mensch, erlebe in deines Tastens ganzem Kreis

— überall können wir tasten, aber wenn wir das Tasten selber fühlen —

O Mensch, erlebe in deines Tastens ganzem Kreis,
Wie Wasserwesen dir im Dasein Bildner sind.

Nun mahnt uns der Hüter der Schwelle weiter. Er mahnt uns, wie wir einheitlich auch werden können mit den Luftgewalten. Die Luft atmen wir ein. Wir können wissen, wenn wir die Luft in unrechter Weise einatmen, dass wir Gefühle bekommen, dass das mit unseren Gefühlen zu tun hat; dass wir Gefühle bekommen, die uns ängstigen, die die Kohärenz unseres Seins durchbrechen. So wie das Wasserelement uns bildet, so pflegt uns das Luftelement. Der Hüter der Schwelle mahnt uns:

O Mensch, erfühle in deines Lebens ganzem Weben,
Wie Luftgewalten dir im Dasein Pfleger sind.

Nun führt uns der Hüter weiter zum Wärmeelement. Mit der Wärme fühlen wir uns ja innig verbunden. Die Erde als Stütze fühlen wir noch außer uns. Von der Art und Weise, wie die Wasserkräfte in uns bilden - während des Wachstums zum Beispiel -, wissen wir wenig; das bleibt im Unterbewusstsein. Ins Gefühl herein dringen die Luftgewalten nur, wenn sie abnorm werden, wenn sie nicht normal wirken. Aber mit der Wärme, wenn wir sie im rechten Maße im Menschenwesen haben, fühlen wir uns einheitlich. Wir werden seelenwarm, wenn wir äußere Wärme empfinden, in unserem ganzen Menschenwesen. Wir erstarren, wenn wir äußere Kälte erleben müssen. Wärme und Kälte sind eins in einer ganz anderen Art in der Elementarwelt mit uns. Das sind weder bloße Stützen, noch Bildner, noch Pfleger, das sind unsere wahren Helfer zum physischen Dasein. Der Hüter der Schwelle ermahnt uns:

O Mensch, erdenke in deines Fühlens ganzem Strömen,
Wie Feuermächte dir im Dasein Helfer sind.

Wenn wir befolgen alles dasjenige, was in dieser Aufforderung liegt, dann werden wir den Weg finden, zunächst unser Leibliches mit den Elementen zu vereinigen im Bewusstsein. Denn in Wirklichkeit ist unser Leibliches eins mit den Elementen. Und in verschiedenen Graden ist unser Leibliches eins mit den Elementen. Zunächst mit dem Elemente der Erde in äußerlich mechanischer Weise: «Stütze» ist uns das Erdenelement; das ist äußerlich mechanisch. Es wird schon innerlicher, aber noch immer etwas, was im Formen und im Gestalten besteht, was noch nicht ins Seelische geht: Wasserwesen bilden uns, sind unsere «Bildner». Nun dringt es völlig ins Moralische herauf, wenn wir mit dem Luftelemente eins werden. Das Luftelement ist nicht mehr bloß ein äußerlicher Gestalter, es ist unser Pfleger. Und unsere Gefühle werden Angstgefühle, wenn uns nicht das richtige Atmen pflegt. Die Luftgewalten sind «Pfleger»; «Helfer», dass wir überhaupt Erdenwesen sein können, «Helfer» sind Wärme und Kälte; das sind Feuermächte. Das ist völlig ins Moralische schon heraufgestellt.

Und so heißt die Summe der Ermahnungen vonseiten des Hüters der Schwelle als die Steigerung, im Steigern der Elemente:

O Mensch, erschaue dich in der Elemente Reich.

Die Lehre des Hüters:

O Mensch, ertaste in deines Leibes ganzem Sein,

O Mensch, erfühle in deines Lebens ganzem Weben,
Wie Luftgewalten dir im Dasein Pfleger sind.

O Mensch, erdenke in deines Fühlens ganzem Strömen,
Wie Feuermächte dir im Dasein Helfer sind.

Wir haben die Steigerung [an der Tafel wird unterstrichen]; «Stütze», «Bildner», «Pfleger», «Helfer».

Wir haben noch eine andere Steigerung. Denn in einem mantrischen Spruch steht jedes Wort an seiner richtigen Stelle, und es ist kein Wort da, das bloß etwas ausfüllen soll. Alles deckt sich mit dem inneren Sinn, mit dem wir uns vereinen sollen, indem wir einen solchen mantrischen Spruch meditieren. Wir haben eine Steigerung [es wird an der Tafel unterstrichen]: «ertaste», «erlebe», «erfühle», «erdenke». Es ist eine besondere Steigerung. So müssen wir auch den inneren sinnvollen Bau eines solchen mantrischen Spruches meditierend erleben.

Wenn der Hüter dieses gesagt hat, fasst er es noch einmal zusammen in einer Zeile:

O Mensch, erschaue dich in der Elemente Reich.

So hat uns der Hüter der Schwelle geführt zu inneren Sprucherlebnissen, durch die wir unser Leibliches vereinigen können mit den Elementen, zu denen es gehört.

Er leitet uns weiter hinauf in das Seelische. Da weist er uns nicht an die Elemente Erde, Wasser, Luft, Feuer, da weist er uns an die Planeten, an die Wandelsterne. Da weist er uns dahin, wie wir fühlen sollen, wie in dem Kreislauf der Planeten - in demjenigen, was durch die Planeten als Kreise um die Erde gezogen wird - der eine und der andere Planet den Kreis zieht. Die Kreise haben ihr Verhältnis und sprechen miteinander, wenn der Mensch sich seelisch zu diesem Geheimnis der weltenweisenden Sternenmächte, der Wandelsternenmächte erhebt. Dann lebt er sich mit seinem Seelischen ins geistige Reich des Kosmos hinein, wie er sich vorher mit seinem Leibe in das Reich der Elemente hineingelebt hat. Sich eins fühlen mit dem Kosmos - seelenhaft - können wir nur, wenn wir uns ins Reich der Wandelsterne, der Planeten mit ihren Bahnbeschreibungen hineinleben. Das sagt uns der Hüter der Schwelle mit den Worten:

O Mensch, so lasse walten in deiner Seele Tiefen
Der Wandelsterne weltenweisende Mächte.

Wiederum fasst der Hüter der Schwelle dasjenige, was in diesen beiden Zeilen als richtunggebende Kraft liegt, als das Einsfühlen der Geheimnisse der Seele mit den Wandelsternen, zusammen in die Zeile:

[Es wird an die Tafel geschrieben]:

O Mensch, erwese dich

— das heißt: mache dich seiend—

durch den Weltenkreis.

Die Weltenkreise der verschiedenen Wandelsterne sind zusammengezogen in den einen Weltenkreis. Damit haben wir Leib und Seele mit der Welt als eins empfunden: den Leib mit den irdischen Elementen, die Seele mit den Wandelsternen.

Wollen wir den Geist eins fühlen mit dem Weltenall, da können wir weder hinschauen zu den Elementen, da können wir auch nicht hinschauen zu den Geheimnissen der Wandelsterne, da müssen wir den Blick hinaufrichten zu den Fixsternen, zu den Ruhesternen. Denn da ist die Macht, mit der wir unseren Geist als eins fühlen müssen draußen im weiten Weltenall, wenn wir im wahren Sinne des Wortes uns als ein Glied dieses Weltenalls fühlen wollen. Da beginnt die Welt in der Weltensphärenmusik zu tönen. Deshalb ermahnt uns der Hüter der Schwelle:

O Mensch, erhalte dir in deines Geistes Schaffen
Der Ruhesterne himmelkündende Worte.

Und wiederum fasst der Hüter der Schwelle zusammen, was in dieser Aufforderung steht, in den einen Satz:

O Mensch, erschaffe dich durch die Himmelsweisheit.

Unser Geistsein ist in jedem Augenblicke ein Schaffen unseres Selbst.

O Mensch, erschaffe dich durch die Himmelsweisheit.

Wir stehen in diesem Falle, wenn wir richtig empfinden und fühlen, verinnerlicht vor dem Hüter der Schwelle. Wir gedenken, wie ertönt uns hat das Wort von der Selbsterkenntnis aus allen Wesen noch in einer abstrakten Form, wie es an uns herangeklungen ist von allen Seiten des natürlichen und des geistigen Seins. Aber das eine Wort: «O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!», es ist jetzt in seine einzelnen Glieder auseinandergelegt. Es zerfällt jetzt die eine Aufforderung in eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun Glieder. Das «O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!» sollen wir gewissermaßen in neun Strahlen sehen. Dann wird es erfüllt von dem, was unsere Meditation braucht.

So sollen wir fühlen. Und so sollen wir gewissermaßen dem Hüter der Schwelle geloben, dass wir seine Mahnung erfüllen:

O Mensch, ertaste in deines Leibes ganzem Sein,
Wie Erdenkräfte dir im Dasein Stütze sind.

O Mensch, erlebe in deines Tastens ganzem Kreis,
Wie Wasserwesen dir im Dasein Bildner sind.

O Mensch, erfühle in deines Lebens ganzem Weben,
Wie Luftgewalten dir im Dasein Pfleger sind.

O Mensch, erdenke in deines Fühlens ganzem Strömen,
Wie Feuermächte dir im Dasein Helfer sind.

O Mensch, erschaue dich in der Elemente Reich.

Wir fassen eine Art Gelöbnis vor dem Hüter der Schwelle, dass wir das in immerwährendem Gedenken an seine Ermahnungen uns mantrisch durch die Seele ziehen lassen.

Und schauen wir immer wieder und wieder zurück: Bei jedem Schritte fühlen wir uns verpflichtet, uns zu erinnern an das, was diesseits der Schwelle vorgeht. Und diesseits der Schwelle hat uns eben jeder Stein und jede Pflanze, jeder Baum, jede Wolke, jede Quelle, jeder Fels, jeder Blitz, jeder Donner zugerufen:

O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!
So tönt das Weltenwort.
Du hörst es seelenkräftig,
Du fühlst es geistgewaltig.

Wer spricht so weltenmächtig?
Wer spricht so herzinniglich?
Wirkt es durch des Raumes Weitenstrahlung

Wenn so mit der vollen spirituellen Kraft vom Hüter der Schwelle in diesem Raum erklingen die Worte, die er uns als dienendes Glied der Michael-Macht, der regierenden Macht unserer Zeit, zuruft, wenn so diese Worte erklingen, dann können wir, weil von Michaels Macht selber diese esoterische Schule eingesetzt ist, sicher sein, dass Michael weilt mit seiner Kraft, mit seinem Geiste, mit seiner Liebe, dass Michael weilt geistig-seelisch unter uns.

Die Sprüche, welche in dieser Schule mitgeteilt werden, können nur diejenigen besitzen, die rechtmäßig in die Schule als Mitglieder aufgenommen sind. Diejenigen, die nicht anwesend sein können bei einer Stunde, wo Sprüche gegeben werden, können diese Sprüche erhalten von solchen, die sie in der Schule selbst haben erhalten können. Doch muss, um diese Sprüche zu erhalten, in der Weise erst die reale Erlaubnis entweder von Frau Doktor Wegman oder mir angesucht werden. Dieses Ansuchen an Frau Doktor Wegman oder mich selber kann nur geschehen von demjenigen, der die Sprüche einem andern geben will. Es soll also von vornherein nicht derjenige ansuchen - es hat keinen Zweck -, der sie bekommen will. Er kann zu einem andern gehen, kann ihn bitten, dass er sie ihm gibt; aber fragen muss derjenige, der sie gibt, in jedem einzelnen Fall. Das ist nicht eine Verwaltungsmaßregel, sondern es ist eine okkulte Einrichtung, die bestehen muss, weil die Übergabe beginnen muss mit diesem realen Akte.

Es kann auch nicht - weil das vorgekommen ist, muss ich es im Besonderen sagen -, es kann auch nicht, wenn nicht besondere Gründe vorliegen, sodass eine Verständigung mündlich nicht möglich ist, es kann auch nicht schriftlich angesucht werden, sondern es muss mündlich angesucht werden. Am wenigsten darf innerhalb der Esoterik auch nur der Schein, der fernste Schein eines bürokratischen Wesens sich einleben. Alles muss im Lebendigen stehen wie überhaupt in der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft.

Dann ist zu sagen, wer mehr nachschreibt als die Sprüche, der ist verpflichtet, das Nachgeschriebene nur acht Tage zu haben und es dann zu verbrennen. Denn es ist nicht gut, wenn die Dinge länger irgendwie verbleiben. Sie können alle möglichen Wege nehmen. Das Esoterische muss so behandelt werden; das ist nicht eine willkürliche Maßregel. Im Esoterischen ist alles aus den wirklichen okkulten Untergründen heraus bestimmt. Und wenn esoterische mantrische Sprüche in unrechter Weise hinauskommen über diejenigen Mitglieder, die dazu berechtigt sind, in realer Weise dazu berechtigt sind, indem sie entweder direkt hier, bei ihrem Sitzen hier die Sprüche erhalten haben, oder sie auf dem angedeuteten rechtmäßigen Wege erhalten haben, - wenn sie an andere kommen, die sie nicht auf einem so rechtmäßigen Wege erhalten haben, verlieren für alle, die die Sprüche haben, diese Sprüche ihre spirituelle Kraft. Das ist ein okkultes Gesetz. Und es gibt eben in der Geisteswelt Gesetze, die nicht übertreten werden können ungestraft. Also es handelt sich nicht um eine willkürliche Maßregel, sondern um die Einhaltung eines okkulten Gesetzes.


Nun habe ich zu verkündigen, dass morgen sein wird wiederum um halb zehn Uhr der Kursus für Pastoralmedizin, um zwölf Uhr mittags der Kursus für Sprachgestaltung und dramatische Kunst, nachmittags um halb vier Uhr der Kursus für Theologen, und abends um achteinviertel Uhr wird ein Mitgliedervortrag sein. Um fünf Uhr wird die Eurythmieaufführung sein. Die nächste esoterische Stunde, die dann abrunden soll diese Michael-Lehren, die bekommen worden sind, wird am Montag um halb neun stattfinden.

Fourth Review Lesson

My dear sisters and brothers! It is not possible to give the appropriate introduction here every time about the purpose and significance of the school and about the nature of membership in the school. Even though there are quite a number of new members here again today, I will not give this introduction, but will continue from the point we left off last time, and I must oblige those members who, in the usual sense, have to give the new members the mantras that have been recited so far, to also speak about the conditions associated with admission to the school when they hand over these mantras, under the conditions that I will mention at the end.


We begin by once again letting those words sink into our souls, words that speak from all beings in the world, from all processes in the world, to the person who has an unbiased sense for them, words that contain the call to seek the life of a human being worthy of the name through true self-knowledge, self-knowledge that leads to knowledge of the world. And in fact, all beings from all realms of nature and all realms of the spirit call upon us from all sides to this self-knowledge in the true sense of the word, which is the path to knowledge of the world. Thus all beings of nature and spirit demanded this of human beings in the past, thus they demand it in the present, and thus they will demand it in the future. These demanding words, which approach the human soul from all sides of the world, from east and west, from south and north, from above and below, to the human soul, if it is willing to hear them, may they also begin today what this Michael School is meant to mean to your hearts, to your souls:

O human being, know thyself!
Thus sounds the word of the world.
You hear it with the power of your soul,
you feel it powerfully in your spirit.

Who speaks so powerfully to the world?
Who speaks so heartfeltly?

Does it work through the vast radiance of space
into the experience of being in your mind?
Does it sound through the waves of time
In the stream of your life?

Is it you yourself who,
In the feeling of space, in the experience of time,
Creates the word, feeling yourself alien
In the emptiness of space's soul,
Because you lose the power of thought
In the stream of time's destruction.

We have seen how the seeker of knowledge approaches the guardian of the threshold, how—after the seeker of knowledge has stood shattered under the impression of the three animals, which represent the true form of his present will, feelings, and thoughts before the face of the spiritual world — how the seeker for knowledge is gradually lifted up by the Guardian of the Threshold.

And we have already heard what the Guardian of the Threshold says to the one he wants to lift up, how he points him upward on the one hand, pointing out how light struggles with dark forces in the realm from which the power of our thinking flows into our human being. The Guardian of the Threshold says: We need this image. We need it so that, when we want to feel the origin of our thinking, the power of our thinking in our human being, in the right way, seeking knowledge —that we then look up into those realms from which our thinking comes, where, however, the powers of light, that light which wants to bring thinking into the right channels, are waging a terrible battle with the powers of darkness, which want to lead thinking astray from the right channels, to lead it into wrong paths. Our thinking is rooted up there. We must know that it is rooted there if we want to become seekers of knowledge, with the struggle between light and darkness.

And then, if we know how to strive toward the light, we still find ourselves in a position where we must maintain ourselves. And we must know that we are placed in the struggle between light and darkness: Light wants to take us, so to speak, into a spiritual light-powerlessness, darkness wants to take us and let us lose ourselves in matter. But we must seek the balance between the two: not letting ourselves be taken by light, not letting ourselves be transformed into matter by darkness, but, standing firm in our own nature, finding the balance for our thinking between light and darkness.

Again, when we consider our feelings, we must see – in that realm that works and lives more horizontally, in the worlds – how we are placed in the struggle between soul warmth and soul coldness.

All the Luciferic powers work in the warmth of the soul: the powers of beauty, the powers of light, the powers that want to give us all divine forces without our help. We would become dependent and unfree if they were to absorb us into themselves.

But on the other hand, there are the powers of coldness, of soul coldness, which are permeated by Ahrimanic beings who want to make us lose our selves in the cold. We must find a balance between the spiritual joy into which the powers of warmth, heat, and fire want to lead us, and those regions where, in coldness, with tremendous intellectuality, with an intellectuality that towers above everything, the Ahrimanic powers want to lead us in a persuasive, tempting way. Between the two, we must again keep ourselves in balance in order to find the right feeling for knowledge.

Then, when we look at our will: we must look downwards. There is the realm of the earth and of gravity, from which the power of our will also comes for our earthly life. For the earth has not only the power of gravity within itself, it also has the spiritual power of the will in human beings. Once again, we are faced with two powers, the powers of life and the powers of death. We can succumb to the powers of life with our will. It is then as if the powers of life want to take hold of us. They want to will through our willpower in the cosmic context. We must maintain our self, find the balance between these forces of life and the forces of death, which want to constrain us in order to weave our will eternally into material form.

At this point, the Guardian of the Threshold calls on us to maintain a balance between light and darkness, between warmth and cold, between life and death. For it is not light alone that is the power to which we may belong; in light alone we would be numbed, blinded. Darkness alone is not the one to which we may devote ourselves, for there we would lose ourselves in the substance of darkness. What we must strive for is, in a spiritual sense, that which is striven for in all the world. p>

Wherever you look, my sisters and brothers, light and darkness work together. Look at your hair: the light puts it on your head, but darkness must penetrate it, otherwise your hair would be nothing but rays of light. Look at your whole body: it is woven from light, but it would have no solidity on earth if darkness were not woven into it. Look at every object, my sisters and brothers! The flowering plants: they are created from light; but the powers of darkness must rise up from the ground so that, from light and darkness, that which the plants represent in their solid consistency as beings on earth can appear.

Just as the balance between light and darkness is found in all of nature, so must human beings strive for it in the spiritual world if they want to be true seekers of knowledge. And so it is with the striving for balance between warmth and cold, so it is with the striving for balance between life and death.

And so we stand at the yawning abyss of being, still looking back at the colorfully shining realms of nature, to which we belong with our senses, becoming darker and darker, realizing that from all these shining sensual things does not emerge that which is our own being, that which leads us to self-knowledge : before us is still, like a black wall, the boundary of the dark realm into which we must enter so that light may shine within it through the power we ourselves bring into it. We still stand at the yawning abyss of being, but we have already gained some courage that, through the warnings of the guardian, wings will grow for us to cross the abyss, so that we may enter the darkness and light may come into the darkness.

This is one of the last warnings that the guardian of the threshold gives us, which reads as follows:

The light fights with dark forces
In that realm where your thinking
Wishes to penetrate spiritual existence.
You find, striving toward the light,
Your self taken from you by the spirit;
You can, when darkness entices you,
Lose yourself in matter.

Warmth fights with cold
In that realm where your feelings
Would like to live in spiritual weaving.
You find, loving warmth,
Your self drifting away in spiritual pleasure;
You can, when cold hardens you,
Lose yourself in suffering.

Life struggles with death
In that realm where your will
Wishes to reign in spiritual creation.
You find, grasping life,
Your self disappearing in spiritual power;
You can, when death's power tames you,
Cramp your self in nothingness.

The guardian at the abyss, demanding balance:

Light struggles with dark forces
In that realm where your thinking
Wishes to penetrate spiritual existence.
You find, striving toward the light,
Your self taken from you by the spirit;
You can, when darkness entices you,
Lose your self in matter.

Warmth struggles with cold
In that realm where your feelings
Would like to live in spiritual weaving.
You find, loving warmth,
Your self drifting away in spiritual pleasure;
You can, when cold hardens you,
Dust away your self in suffering.

Life struggles with death
In that realm where your will
Would like to reign in spiritual creation.
You find, grasping life,
Your self disappearing in spiritual power;
You can, when death's power tames you,
Cramp your self in nothingness.

You will find, my dear sisters and brothers, if you devote yourselves to these mantric words with the right attitude and the right mind, in inner peace of soul, in full inner sacrifice for the devotion of the spirit, you will find that in the words themselves lies that which brings the soul into a state of balance.

Now, as seekers of knowledge, we stand before the Guardian of the Threshold at the yawning abyss of being. The Guardian of the Threshold gives us the next lesson on how, by choosing the path between light and darkness, warmth and cold, life and death, we can find ourselves upright in our own selves.

We cannot help but reflect on this, my dear sisters and brothers: in order to attain true knowledge, it is necessary that we become one with the world, that we develop a feeling for the world, just as the finger, if it could feel for itself, would have a feeling for the whole human body. If the finger could feel for itself, it would say to itself: I am only a finger as long as I am part of the human body, as long as the blood of the human body is my blood, as long as the pulsation of the human body is my pulsation; if I am cut off, I cease to be a finger. — The finger loses its meaning when separated from the organism to which it belongs and on which alone it can be a finger.

Human beings must learn to feel this way toward the whole world. We are a member of the spiritual-soul organism of the whole world; we are only apparently separated as human beings from the spiritual-soul organism of the world. We must find the right way to unite with the spiritual-soul organism of the world. First of all, we must know that the elements earth, water, air, and fire are spread out around us. And we must learn to feel ourselves as one with our physicality — for it is structured from these elements — to feel ourselves as one with these elements.

The Guardian of the Threshold teaches us how we should do this and how we can do it. Now consider carefully what is contained in those instructive mantras that the Guardian of the Threshold gives us at this point in our advance to the abyss of being.

My dear sisters and brothers, imagine that you are touching an object with your finger. You know that the object is where you are touching it. You touch an object. You feel a oneness with this object, because at the moment you touch an object, a tactile sensation is what makes your finger or whatever else you are touching with one with the object. Now imagine that you are like a finger, like a tactile limb. You stand on the earth, on the element of earth; you stand because the earth's main characteristic is the element of heaviness. You touch the earth with the soles of your feet, regardless of whether you are standing on a parquet floor in a room or elsewhere outside on the open earth. What matters is that you feel the heaviness of the earth element as you stand. You can stand on top of a mountain, on a tower: You feel – just as you feel hard and soft, warm and cold at the tip of your finger – in the process of touching, you feel your unity when you think of yourself as a whole, as a finger, at the soles of your feet, where you feel the heaviness. This is what the Guardian of the Threshold says when he admonishes in the following way:

O human being, feel in your whole being,
How the forces of the earth support you in your existence.

That the forces of the earth are our support, that the earth element supports us so that we do not sink, is what the Guardian of the Threshold tells us at this point.

But then he leads us further, when we now feel not only how we stand on the ground as a whole finger, but when we now feel what is inside the finger: First of all, it is the blood, the life force, the warmth, the movement, the activity, the life, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy, the life force, the vitality, the energy

But then he leads us further, when we now feel not only how we stand on our toes, but when we now feel what is inside the toe: it is first of all the water element, the liquid. For everything that is in man – this can be traced externally with physical science – is born out of the liquid element. The solid is only separated from the liquid, like ice from water. We must ascend to feel the second element. Out there, the liquid is everywhere in the world. Within us, our own formative forces are formed from the liquid element. The formative forces shape us. Our lungs and our liver are solidly formed, but they solidify from the liquid element. Just as we feel the earth as our support, so we feel, by feeling our organs, that we are formed as human beings out of the water element. The water forces are our formers; the earth is our support. That is why the Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O human being, experience in the whole circle of your touch

— we can feel everywhere, but when we feel the feeling itself —

O human being, experience in your entire circle of feeling,
How water beings are your formers in existence.

Now the Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us further. He urges us to become one with the forces of the air. We breathe in the air. We can know that if we breathe in the air in the wrong way, we will have feelings that have to do with our emotions; that we will have feelings that frighten us, that disrupt the coherence of our being. Just as the water element shapes us, so the air element nurtures us. The Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O human, feel in the whole weaving of your life,
How the forces of the air are your nurturers in existence.

Now the Guardian leads us further to the element of warmth. We feel deeply connected to warmth. We feel the earth as a support outside ourselves. We know little about the way the forces of water shape us—during growth, for example—that remains in the subconscious. The forces of air only penetrate our feelings when they become abnormal, when they do not act normally. But with warmth, when we have it in the right measure in our human nature, we feel unified. We become warm in our souls when we feel external warmth in our whole human being. We freeze when we have to experience external cold. Warmth and cold are one in a completely different way in the elemental world with us. They are neither mere supports, nor formers, nor nurturers; they are our true helpers in physical existence. The Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O human being, consider in the whole flow of your feelings,
How the powers of fire are your helpers in existence.

If we follow all that is contained in this exhortation, we will find the way to first unite our physical body with the elements in consciousness. For in reality, our physical body is one with the elements. And to varying degrees, our physical body is one with the elements. First, with the element of earth in an outwardly mechanical way: the earth element is our “support”; that is externally mechanical. It becomes more internal, but still something that consists of form and shape, which does not yet enter into the soul: water beings form us, they are our “formers.” Now it penetrates completely into the moral realm when we become one with the element of air. The element of air is no longer merely an external shaper, it is our nurturer. And our feelings become feelings of fear when we do not breathe correctly. The forces of air are “nurturers”; ‘helpers’ that we can be earthly beings at all, “helpers” are warmth and cold; these are forces of fire. This is already completely elevated to the moral realm.

And so the sum of the admonitions from the Guardian of the Threshold is called the intensification, the intensification of the elements:

O human being, behold yourself in the realm of the elements.

The teaching of the Guardian:

O human being, feel in your whole being,
How the forces of the earth support you in your existence.

O human, experience in the whole circle of your touch,
How water beings shape you in your existence.

O human, feel in the whole weaving of your life,
How the forces of the air nurture you in your existence.

O human, contemplate in the entire flow of your feelings,
How fire forces are your helpers in existence.

We have the intensification [underlined on the board]; “support,” “shaper,” “caretaker,” “helper.”

We have another intensification. For in a mantric saying, every word is in its right place, and there is no word that is merely there to fill a space. Everything corresponds to the inner meaning with which we are to unite ourselves by meditating on such a mantric saying. We have an intensification [underlined on the board]: “feel,” “experience,” “sense,” “contemplate.” It is a special intensification. In this way, we must also experience the inner meaningful structure of such a mantric saying through meditation.

When the guardian has said this, he summarizes it once more in one line:

[It is written on the blackboard:]

O human being, behold yourself in the realm of the elements.

Thus, the guardian of the threshold has led us to inner experiences of spells through which we can unite our physical body with the elements to which it belongs.

He leads us further up into the soul. There he does not point us to the elements earth, water, air, and fire, but to the planets, the wandering stars. He shows us how we should feel, how in the cycle of the planets — in that which is drawn by the planets as circles around the Earth — one planet and then another draws its circle. The circles are related to each other and communicate with each other when the human being rises spiritually to this mystery of the world-guiding star powers, the wandering star powers. Then they live themselves into the spiritual realm of the cosmos with their soul, just as they previously lived themselves into the realm of the elements with their body. We can only feel at one with the cosmos – soulfully – if we live ourselves into the realm of the wandering stars, the planets with their orbital paths. The Guardian of the Threshold tells us this with the words:

O human, let the depths of your soul be ruled
By the world-guiding powers of the wandering stars.

O human, let the depths of your soul be ruled
By the world-guiding powers of the changing stars.

Once again, the Guardian of the Threshold summarizes what lies in these two lines as a guiding force, as the empathy of the mysteries of the soul with the changing stars, in the line:

O human being, become yourself

— that is: make yourself exist —

through the world circle.

The world cycles of the various wandering stars are drawn together into one world cycle. In this way, we have perceived body and soul as one with the world: the body with the earthly elements, the soul with the wandering stars.

If we want to feel the spirit as one with the universe, we cannot look at the elements, nor can we look at the mysteries of the wandering stars; we must raise our gaze to the fixed stars, to the stars of rest. For there is the power with which we must feel our spirit as one out there in the vast universe, if we want to feel ourselves as a member of this universe in the true sense of the word. There the world begins to resound in the music of the spheres. That is why the Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:

O human being, preserve in your spiritual creativity
The words of the stars of rest proclaiming the heavens.

O human being, preserve in your spiritual creativity
The words of the star of rest, proclaiming the heavens.

And again, the Guardian of the Threshold summarizes what is contained in this request in one sentence:

O human, create yourself through the wisdom of the heavens.

Our spirit being is a creation of our self in every moment.

[It is now written on the board]

O human, create yourself through heavenly wisdom.

In this case, if we feel and sense correctly, we stand internalized before the guardian of the threshold. We remember how the word of self-knowledge resounded to us from all beings in an abstract form, how it came to us from all sides of natural and spiritual being. But the one word: “O man, know thyself!” is now broken down into its individual parts. The one exhortation now falls into one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine parts. We should, as it were, see the “O man, know thyself!” in nine rays. Then it will be fulfilled by what our meditation needs.

This is how we should feel. And this is how we should, in a sense, vow to the Guardian of the Threshold that we will fulfill his admonition:

O man, feel in the whole being of your body,
How the forces of the earth support you in your existence.

O human, experience in the whole circle of your touch,
How water beings shape you in your existence.

O human, feel in the whole weaving of your life,
How the forces of the air nurture you in your existence.

O human, contemplate in the entire flow of your feelings, How the forces of fire are your helpers in existence.

O human, behold yourself in the realm of the elements.

O human, let the powers of the changing stars, which guide the world, reign in the depths of your soul.

The world-guiding powers of the changing stars.

O human, become yourself through the circle of the world.

O human, preserve in your spirit's creation
The words of the star of peace, heralding the heavens.

We make a kind of vow before the Guardian of the Threshold that we will let his admonitions run through our souls like a mantra in everlasting remembrance.

And let us look back again and again: With every step we take, we feel obliged to remember what is happening on this side of the threshold. And on this side of the threshold, every stone and every plant, every tree, every cloud, every spring, every rock, every flash of lightning, every clap of thunder has called out to us:

O man, know thyself!
Thus sounds the word of the world.
You hear it with the power of your soul,
You feel it with the power of your spirit.

Who speaks with such power over the world?
Who speaks with such heartfelt sincerity?
Does it work through the vast radiance of space
In the experience of your senses?
Does it sound through the waves of time
In the stream of your life?

Is it you yourself who,
In the feeling of space, in the experience of time,
Creates the word, feeling yourself alien
In the emptiness of space,
Because you lose the power of thought
In the stream of time's destruction.

When the words resound in this room with the full spiritual power of the Guardian of the Threshold, calling out to us as a serving member of the Michaelic power, the ruling power of our time, when these words resound, then we can be sure, because this esoteric school is established by Michael's power itself, that Michael is present with his power, with his spirit, with his love, that Michael is present spiritually and soulfully among us.

And this may also be confirmed — where what guides the school is felt to be responsible to the Michaelic power, so that nothing else flows through this school but what lies in the sacred will of Michael himself — this may be confirmed by Michael's sign and Michael's seal; this Michael sign [the Michael sign is drawn on the blackboard; see page 848] and the Michael seal, which confirms that the Michael power enters into true Rosicrucian training and thus connects what is taught in the Michael School with Michael's seal, which seals the Rosicrucian foundation in the Rosicrucian motto, which is spoken with the seal signs:

“I adore the Father”: when we say the phrase “Ex deo nascimur,” it touches our soul;

“I love the Son”: with the saying “In Christo morimur” silently passing through the soul – felt;

“I connect myself to the Spirit”: silently felt with the saying “Per spiritum sanctum reviviscimus”.

The sayings of the Guardian of the Threshold come to you, my sisters and brothers, with the sign and seal of Michael:

The sayings communicated in this school can only be possessed by those who are lawfully admitted to the school as members. Those who cannot be present at a lesson where sayings are given can obtain these sayings from those who have received them at the school itself. However, in order to receive these sayings, real permission must first be sought from either Dr. Wegman or myself. This request to Dr. Wegman or myself can only be made by the person who wants to give the sayings to another. Therefore, those who wish to receive the sayings should not make the request themselves – it is pointless. They can go to someone else and ask them to give them the sayings, but the person giving them must ask in each individual case. This is not an administrative measure, but an occult institution that must exist because the transfer must begin with this real act.

It is also not possible — because this has happened, I must say this in particular — it is also not possible, unless there are special reasons, so that verbal communication is not possible, it is also not possible to apply in writing, but the application must be made verbally. Least of all must even the slightest appearance, the remotest appearance of a bureaucratic nature become established within esotericism. Everything must be alive, as it is in the Anthroposophical Society in general.

Then it must be said that anyone who writes down more than the sayings is obliged to keep what they have written down for only eight days and then burn it. For it is not good if things remain in any way for longer. They can take all kinds of paths. The esoteric must be treated in this way; this is not an arbitrary measure. In esotericism, everything is determined by the real occult foundations. And if esoteric mantric sayings come out in an unjust way beyond those members who are entitled to them, who are really entitled to them, either by having received the sayings directly here, while sitting here, or by having received them in the indicated lawful way, – if they come to others who have not received them in such a lawful manner, these sayings lose their spiritual power for all who have them. This is an occult law. And there are laws in the spiritual world that cannot be broken with impunity. So this is not an arbitrary measure, but the observance of an occult law.


Now I have to announce that tomorrow there will again be a course in pastoral medicine at half past nine, a course in speech formation and dramatic art at noon, a course for theologians at half past three in the afternoon, and a member's lecture at a quarter past eight in the evening. At five o'clock there will be a eurythmy performance. The next esoteric lesson, which will round off these Michael teachings that have been received, will take place on Monday at half past eight.
