Lecture XXIV (Recapitulation of Lesson V)
My dear sisters and brothers,
New members have again come to this School today. It isn't possible to repeat every time the introduction which describes the duties and meaning of this Michael School. Therefore, I ask the members who wish to give the verses to the new members, to do so in the manner I will describe at the end of the Lesson, and to give them the introduction, which everyone who wishes to be a member of this School must necessarily know.
And so, we will also begin directly today to inscribe in our souls the words which sound forth, to those who are open-minded enough, from all the kingdoms of nature and the hierarchies of the world which surround us as human beings. In the past, these words sounded forth to man from all the stones and plants, clouds, stars, from the sun and the moon, from the springs and the rocks. They sound forth to him in the present; they will sound forth to him in the future.
O man, know thyself!
So resounds the Cosmic-Word.
You hear it strong in soul,
You feel it firm in spirit.
Who speaks with such cosmic might?
Who speaks with such depth of heart?
Does it work through distant radiant space
Into your senses' sense of being?
Does it ring through weaving waves of time
Into your life's evolving stream?
It's you yourself who,
In feeling space, in experiencing time,
Create the Word, feeling foreign
In space's soulless void
Because you lose the force of thought
In time's destroying flow.
My dear sisters and brothers, in the description of the path of knowledge we have reached the place where we stand before the Guardian at the abyss of being. The Guardian of the Threshold has made clear to us that what surrounds us in the exterior world can never reveal our own being to us; how our observation of nature, what on and from the earth lives and moves, what shines and speaks from the realm of the stars—to the extent we can perceive it with the senses and with our reason—all that offers nothing to clarify the being of our own self; that the brightness, this glistening in the sunshine, this living and interweaving which is so grand and powerful, so beautiful and magnificent in the outer world, remains dark and gloomy for our true self-knowledge.
Then it was described how we approach the Guardian little by little, who appears to us in the figure of a spiritual cloud, thus showing us an image of ourselves, which in turn shows us what we should strive for as human beings in order to achieve self-knowledge.
Then we reached the Guardian of the Threshold. He showed us what the true shape of our willing, feeling and thinking is before the countenance of the gods. He showed us how being fainthearted and having fear of knowledge lives in us, as hate for knowledge, as doubt about the knowledge that is nevertheless in us, because the character of our times has driven it into us. He showed us the animal form of our willing, feeling and thinking. It must be a shattering experience for us when the Guardian of the Threshold awakens the forces which lead to true self-knowledge in our souls.
Then the Guardian of the Threshold raised us, first showing us, however, how our thinking, as we use it in normal life, is the corpse of the living thinking which was in us before we descended to physical-sensory existence. He showed us how our body, in earthly existence, is a coffin for the deceased living thinking, which lies in the coffin as a corpse. But we use this corpse for our usual abstract thinkingbetween birth and death in order to understand the things of the physical-sensory world.
Once we grasp how dead this thinking is, we can learn from the corpse that lies before us. We look at this corpse. We say to ourselves: This corpse could never have come into being the way it is now. It is what remains of a human being whose soul and spirit were within it. The living person, the ensouled person, the spiritualized person must have existed beforehand in what lies before us as a corpse. Thus, we approach the reality of our thinking when we become aware of its deadness, and realize that it is the corpse of the living thinking that was in us before we descended into physical-sensory earthly existence.
Then the Guardian reminds us that our feeling is only half-alive, whereas our willing is fully alive, but we are only conscious of this externally.
The Guardian of the Threshold also reminds us that in order to gradually find the transition to living thinking, we should look up to the heavenly heights; that to grasp the nature of feeling we should look out to the cosmic reaches, and to gain an idea of the nature of will we should look to the world's depths, to the earthly depths.
But at the same time the Guardian shows us how we are placed with our thinking—when we look up to the cosmic thinking in which our earthly-physical thinking is rooted—between light and darkness; how the light can be dangerous if we devote ourselves unilaterally to it, how the darkness can be dangerous if we devote ourselves unilaterally to it, how we must seek our direction and goal in the middle between light and darkness if we are to find the truth, how we stand in the middle between warmth and cold with our feeling, and how we can vanish in the sensual embers of feeling if we surrender ourselves to the warmth, and on the other hand harden in the cold.
The Guardian of the Threshold indicates to us how we should walk in the middle between soul-warmth and soul-cold on the Christ-path. The Guardian of the Threshold indicates to us that when we seek willing in the earthly depths we find ourselves in the middle between life and death; how life would have us vanish in timidity; how death would have us cramped in nothingness; that we must findwilling in the Middle Way. That, my dear sisters and brothers, is what the Middle Way is—as it has been described since ancient Mystery times—which the human being must tread if he wants to follow the path to the spirit.
The Guardian of the Threshold, before whom we stand as the earnest first representative of Michael, for the real leader of this School is Michael, gives us further guidance: how we can escape from this apparent thinking, from this dead thinking into the living essence of thinking. For this we must be prepared above all to strictly adhere to the laws which are prescribed for every esotericist in golden letters—he must only seize the gold—which the Guardian of the Threshold now repeats to us.
He makes us attentive to the yawning abyss of being before us, which we must fly over, because with earthly feet we cannot cross; how we will have then entered the spiritual world, for there on the other side of the yawning abyss deep, night-cloaked darkness is still before us. But we must enter beyond the yawning abyss of being into that deep, night-cloaked, cold darkness. Out of it warmth must come to us, out of it must come light which illumines our own Self, which warms our own Self. We cannot find the firm support-point in the spirit if, whenever we are over there, we do not remember the pledge that our soul makes, now that we are in this situation, after having received the previous admonitions from the Guardian of the Threshold, who now says:
Do not forget that as long as you are an earthly human being, even when you have crossed over to the spiritual world, that once you have returned you must adhere to the laws of the earth. When you enter the spiritual world with your thinking, you may not believe that when you return and organize your work and your thoughts in the earthly environment you may fly around dreaming within the earthly environment. You must reserve the flying for your thinking when you are in the spiritual world. You must practice deep, inner, intimate modesty, always wanting to be a man among men when you cross back to the ordinary world of ordinary consciousness. It is precisely by wishing to stay modest in the world, by abstaining from using the laws of the spiritual life in the ordinary world, that you will have the strength to grasp thinking in a way that it can serve you in spiritual worlds.
The Guardian of the Threshold therefore teaches us about thinking thus:
You climb down to the earthly element
With forces of your will unfolding;
As thinker you bestride the earthly realm,
Your animal-likeness will be shown
To you by your own force of thought;
The fear you feel of self you must
Transform into courage of soul.
We must go through this by letting the mantric verse work on us. We must, if we wish to enter into the essential element of the earth, that means in the spiritual element of the earth; we must, my dear sisters and brothers, come to the point where we realize that our thinking is at first animal-like. We must experience fear of our own Self that is still animal-like; then the fear will give birth to its opposite and become the courage we need. That is the Guardian of the Threshold's urgently strong, earnest admonition, which cuts deeply into the heart. He admonishes us that we should feel this way when we tread the earth-element. We have already heard about treading the elements from the Guardian of the Threshold.
He admonishes us further: when, as feeling beings, we enter the fluid element, in the world of the water-beings, that we should not be aware of fear of our own Self, but we should be aware of how we sleep dreaming in this water element, which is our sculptor, as we have seen. And it is just when we become conscious that we live a plant-like existence in our earthly human feeling, that this feeling awakens us, for it shows us how lame our Self is. We will awaken once we have the humility to recognize the lameness of our Self.
Thirdly, when we feel ourselves to be in the air element with our willing—first in the earth-element with thinking, then in the water-element with feeling, then with willing in the air-element—then we will feel in this air-element that we have nothing in willing except what our normal memory gives us: memory-image-forms. We must seize these image-forms, which rest passively in our thoughts, with the will; then we are grasping the air-element in inner images. And our own soul will appear to us as if it were ossified. If we eliminate the earth and the air in thought and imagine ourselves wanting to breathe in the air-element, how ossified will we seem. But just by feeling this death by cold that we pass through, the spiritual fire will come to us, which we need in order to really grasp our willing.
The verses are profound, which the Guardian of the Threshold presents to our souls. Only if we observe them well and have fear of ourselves and know that we are nullified if we only perceive the earth in thought, will we have the courage in our souls for living thinking. When we sense how lame in feeling we are on earth, half living and lame, will the strength grow in us which allows us to awaken, so that we are awake in spiritual life, with the feeling we had before we descended to earthly physical existence. Then, when we have willingly descended into the air-element with our memory, we feel sclerotic and shivering with cold. But it is just when we feel this shivering from the cold the opposite happens, the spiritual fire awakens, showing us that our earthly willing is sleeping, but rooted in the living willing which was in us before we descended to earthly existence. We must learn to remember our existence before we descended to earthly existence.
In respect to feeling, the Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us:
You live with the water-element
Through feeling's weaving dream alone;
To wake pervading water's being
Will show the soul in you
To be a sluggish plant-like being;
But lameness of your Self
Must Lead to self-awakening.
In respect to willing, the Guardian speaks:
You sense in the waves of air
The image-forms of memory only;
Through willing to seize the essence of air,
Your own soul will threaten you
As coldly hardened stone;
But self-hood's death by cold,
It must give way to spirit-fire.
[The mantra is written on the blackboard with the corresponding underlining:]
The Guardian speaks with great earnestness:
You climb down to the earthly element
With forces of your will unfolding
As thinker you bestride the earthly realm,
Your animal-likeness will be shown
To you by your own force of thought
The fear you feel of self you must
Transform into courage of soul.
You live with the water-element
Through feeling's weaving dream alone;
To wake pervading water's being
Will show the soul in you
To be a sluggish plant-like being;
But lameness of your Self
Must Lead to self-awakening.
You sense in the waves of air
The image-forms of memory alone;
Through willing to seize the essence of air,
Your own soul will threaten you
As coldly hardened stone;
But self-hood's death by cold,
It must give way to spirit-fire.
We descend from thinking to feeling in memory when we let this verse work on us. And when we arrive at the depths of memory—where soul-life otherwise vanishesbecause the images of memory arise anew—there is the boundary, just as a mirror is a boundary. What comes to us from without arrives at something like a memory-wall, then it returns again and again. If one does not look behind the mirror, one does not see behind the memory-wall. But here the Guardian of the Threshold advises us that we must push through what is otherwise a boundary in order to enter the realm of spirit.
After the Guardian of the Threshold has referred us more to our interior with his admonishing verses and has left us time to process the contents of the verses in the soul—for when we use these mantric verses in meditation, we must allow ourselves a very long time, especially at this point, so they can work in us with their force and really bring our I downward through thinking, feeling and remembrance to what lies behind all remembrance—then the Guardian tells us how we should comport ourselves in respect to the outer world.
He draws our attention again up to the light, which however only lives in us in what seem to be thoughts. It is light that thinks in us. When the light pervades us, it thinks in us. But in earthly life light is only the appearance of a thinking that thinks itself. If we don't go beyond it, untrue spiritual being will lead us to the illusion of self-hood rather than to true self-hood So we must realize that if we only concentrate on thinking, we will wind up with the illusion of self-hood. But it is just this understanding of ourselves as earthly human beings, after having gone through the delusion of self-hood—through thinking, which, however, is capable of carrying us over the abyss of being to grasp the world's hardships and problems—that will enable us to gradually find support for experiencing existence in thought.
From light's shining force
Your thoughts you retain within;
When shining light in you itself does think,
Will then an untrue spirit-being cause
Illusion of self-hood to arise in you.
Reflecting on the needs of earth
Preserves your human state of being.
Now the Guardian of the Threshold teaches us how in feeling, at first, we only retain the wonderful, all-embracing forms of the world. But when we only retain these forms in feeling, our spiritual experience remains powerless. Self-hood suffocates if we always only stare, feeling, at what has been formed in the world. But if we begin to love all that is worthy in the world around us, we find being in feeling and we rescue our humanity.
The world's forms you only retain
In feelings held fast within;
When world-form feels itself in you,
The powerless experience of spirit
Will stifle in you the sense of self-hood;
But love of all that's worthy on earth
Will rescue for you your human soul.
Generally, we try to hatch thoughts from earthly values. We only retain the illusion of light if we don't consider the earth's weighty problems. We retain what is formed on the earth only in vague feelings if we don't experience this earthly interweaving of forms and gestalt with love.
And what can we retain of the world's life by willing? Our willing exists in the world's life. But if we only retain it by willing, we again fail to reach being. When the life of the world completely engulfs us, destructive spiritual exaltation kills the experience of Self. Immersion in the world's willing causes spiritual exaltation to erupt, which kills us. But if we develop the will in spiritual dedication to the higher worlds, if we think about what we are willing in the physical-sensory world in a way that the gods act in us, who inspire and give impulse to our willing, if we will in the service of the gods, then God lets his being give impulse to us as humans, and we sense real being in godly permeated willing.
You only retain of worldly life
The will within;
If worldly life takes hold in full,
Destructive spirit exaltation
Will kill experience of Self in you;
But spirit-dedicated earthly willing
Allows the God in man to reign.
These are the three admonitions which the Guardian of the Threshold calls out to us in the most earnest moments.
[The mantra is written on the blackboard:]
The Guardian speaks as though the Cosmic-Word itself were resounding:
From light's shining force
our thoughts you retain within;
—It is as though the Guardian wanted to bring our attention to what we are actually doing. He says that we have not yet gotten over forming mere thoughts about light's shining—
When shining light in you itself does think,
Will then an untrue spirit-being cause
Illusion of self-hood to arise in you.
Reflecting on the needs of earth
Preserves your human state of being
The world's forms you only retain
In feelings held fast within
—Once again, the admonition that in our vague, unfocused feelings only what is so wonderfully formed by the world is alive. At first the forming of the world is apprehended in the microcosm through the vagueness of feelings—
When world-form feels itself in you
—that is, not when we sense the world-form with our feelings, but when the world-form penetrates us, the macrocosm into the microcosm—
When world-form feels itself in you,
Experience of spirit is powerless,
—we become aware of our own powerlessness—
When world-form feels itself in you,
Experience of spirit is powerless,
And stifles in you the sense of self-hood;
But love of all that's worthy on earth
Will rescue for you your human soul.
We need this rescuing, for we are about to cross over the abyss. If we only carry over the thoughts instilled by the illusion of light, if we only carry over the vague feelings about world-form, then spiritual exaltation destroys the true light on the other side; powerless feeling, asleep, destroys the experience of the spiritual. We need awareness of the earth's needs, of all that the earth suffers, in order to be worthy to cross over to the spiritual world and not be destroyed by worldly thinking. We need love for what is worthy on the earth in order not to be turned to dust if we cross over with vague feelings. And thirdly, for willing we need this:
You only retain of worldly life
The will within;
If worldly Life takes hold in full,
—and it will do so over there—
Destructive spirit exaltation
Will kill experience of Self in you;
But spirit-dedicated earthly willing
Allows the God in man to reign.
We may not merely carry over to the spiritual world what we have on this side. We must carry over a stronger soul than we have here. We must prepare the soul:
[As the following is spoken, the words between quotation marks are underlined on the blackboard:]
On the other side, we find “light's shining force”. It lives in our thinking. We need “Reflecting on the needs of earth”. Compassion for all the earth's suffering will preserve our “human state of being”.
Over there, because we are coming to the World-formation, we don't only need our “feelings”, we need “love for all that's worthy on earth”; then our “human soul” will be rescued. Here [in the first verse]: preserve our human state of being; here [in the second verse:] the human soul is rescued.
We must enter the full “worldly life”, which in our “willing” is only a weak reflection, is too flimsy to pass over. And we must develop “spiritually developed earthly willing” for the “god in man” to reign.
This is the escalation:
Light's shining force
World-formation
love for all that's worthy on earth
Thoughts
Feelings
Willing
We need:
Reflecting on the needs of earth,
Love for all that's worthy on earth,
Spiritually developed earthly willing;
for we need:
to preserve our human state of being,
to rescue the human soul,
to receive the reigning God within us.
That, my dear sisters and brothers, is what the Guardian places before our souls so that we may develop the wings of soul needed to cross over.
In the next esoteric lesson, to be held on Wednesday, it will be necessary that we receive the mantras through the Guardian of the Threshold—who in this case is Michael's representative at the threshold to the spiritual lands—the mantras which are the first that we speak when we arrive in the spiritual realm, which, however, appears before the human being when receiving these mantras as deep, night-cloaked, cold darkness.
Today, though, after this has been shown to our souls, let us again contemplate what speaks to us from all being, encouraging us toward all that the Guardian of the Threshold has placed before us with such firmness:
O man, know thyself!
So resounds the Cosmic-Word.
You hear it strong in soul,
You feel it firm in spirit.
Who speaks with such cosmic might?
Who speaks with such depth of heart?
Does it work through distant radiant space
Into your senses' sense of being?
Does it ring through weaving waves of time
Into your life's evolving stream?
It's you yourself who,
In feeling space, in experiencing time,
Create the Word, feeling foreign
In space's the soulless void
Because you lose the force of thought
In time's destroying flow.
And what has been placed before our souls by the Guardian of the Threshold's words is Michael's message in this rightfully established Michael School. If we receive them with the right attitude, Michael's being is present in this room, consecrating and strengthening what has been placed before our souls. Therefore, it may be accompanied by Michael's Sign. Michael's Sign is:

[in red]
and Michael's Seal, which he has impressed on the Rosicrucian mood for centuries, and which is expressed in the dictum:
ex deo nascimur
In Christo morimur
Per spiritum sanctum reviviscimus
The first words, “I revere the Father”, are spoken accompanied by the gesture:

The second words, “I love the Son” are accompanied by the gesture:

The third words, “I unite myself with the Spirit”, are accompanied by the gesture:

The first gesture means:
I revere the Father
the second gesture:
I love the Son
the third gesture.
I unite myself with the Spirit.
Thus, we may understand what is spoken as having been strengthened by Michael's sign and confirmed by Michael's Seal, which is thus, thus and thus, [indicating the Seal gestures on the blackboard] which is impressed over the Rosicrucian words.
So, should the verses live, which have been given through Michael's Sign, and sealed by the Michaelic Rosicrucian-School for your souls:

[Michael Sign]
The following is spoken, accompanied by the Seal Gestures:
ex deo nascimur
In Christo morimur
Per spiritum sanctum reviviscimus.
My dear sisters and brothers, the mantric verses which are given in this School may only be possessed by the School's rightful members, that is, those who have the blue membership certificate. Someone who could not be present at a lesson after the date of his admittance at which he could have been present, may receive the verses given after the date of his admittance from another member who has rightfully received them here in the School. For this it is necessary to obtain permission from either Dr. Wegman or myself.
This is not an administrative measure, but it is a basis of an occult school that a real action precedes something like this. Only the person who wants to give the verses to another may make the request to Dr. Wegman or to me, not the one who wants to receive them. Therefore, one can request the verses from another. But permission may not be requested by the one who is to receive the verses, but the one who is to give them. It would be useless for the recipient to ask.
Whoever copies something other than the mantras may keep it for a week; thereafter he is obliged to burn it, for what lives in this School should only live within the School and not outside it. This has nothing to do with power or arbitrary measures. It is all based on occult laws. Because if anything falls into the wrong hands, it loses its effectiveness for those for whom it is intended. If misuse prevails in that mantric verses or the contents of what is given here are given to the wrong people, the mantric verses and what is being given here lose their effectiveness for those who are present. These are facts, not some kind of arbitrary measures.
The program for tomorrow is: again at 9.30 the Pastoral Medicine lesson, at 12 o'clock the speech-formation course, at 5.30 the course for theologians and at 8 o'clock the lecture for members.
O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!
So tönt das Weltenwort.
Du hörst es seelenkräftig,
Du fühlst es geistgewaltig.Wer spricht so weltenmächtig?
Wer spricht so herzinniglich?Wirkt es durch des Raumes Weitenstrahlung
In deines Sinnes Seinserleben?
Tönt es durch der Zeiten Wellenweben
In deines Lebens Werdestrom?Bist du es selbst, der sich
Im Raumesfühlen, im Zeiterleben
Das Wort erschafft, dich fremd
Erfühlend in Raumes Seelenleere,
Mit deines Willens Kraftentfaltung;
Betritt als Denker du das Erdensein,
Es wird Gedankenmacht dir dich
Als deine eigne Tierheit zeigen;
Nur durch des Fühlens Traumesweben;
Durchdring erwachend Wassersein,
Es wird die Seele sich in dir
Als dumpfes Pflanzendasein geben;
Nur in Gedächtnis-Bilderformen;
Ergreife wollend Lüftewesen,
Es wird die eigne Seele dich
Als kalterstarrter Stein bedrohn;
Doch deiner Selbstheit Kälte-Tod,
Mit deines Willens Kraftentfaltung;
Betritt als Denker du das Erdensein,
Es wird Gedankenmacht dir dich
Als deine eigne Tierheit zeigen;
Die Furcht vor deinem Selbst
Muss dir in Seelen-Mut sich wandeln.Du lebest mit dem Wasserwesen
Nur durch des Fühlens Traumesweben;
Durchdring erwachend Wassersein,
Es wird die Seele sich in dir
Als dumpfes Pflanzendasein geben;
Und Lahmbeit deines Selbst
Muss dich zum Wachen führen.Du sinnest in dem Lüftewehen
Nur in Gedächtnis-Bilderformen;
Ergreife wollend Lüftewesen,
Es wird die eigne Seele dich
Als kalterstarrter Stein bedrohn;
Doch deiner Selbstheit Kälte-Tod,
Gedanken nur im Innern fest;
Wenn Lichtesschein in dir sich selber denkt,
So wird unwahres Geisteswesen
In dir als Selbstheitwahn erstehn;
Gefühle nur im Innern fest;
Wenn Weltenform in dir sich selber fühlt,
So wird ohnmächtig Geist-Erleben
In dir das Selbstheitsein ersticken;
Das Wollen nur im Innern fest;
Wenn Weltenleben dich voll erfasst,
So wird vernichtend Geistes-Lust
In dir das Selbst-Erleben töten;
Doch Erdenwollen geist-ergeben,
In dir als Selbstheitwahn erstehn;
In dir das Selbstheitsein ersticken;
Und zum Dritten, wir brauchen für das Wollen dieses [es wird weitergeschrieben];
Du hältst vom Weltenleben
Das Wollen nur im Innern fest;
In dir das Selbst-Erleben töten;
Doch Erdenwollen geist-ergeben,
Wer spricht so weltenmächtig?
Wer spricht so herzinniglich?Wirkt es durch des Raumes Weitenstrahlung
In deines Sinnes Seinserleben?
Tönt es durch der Zeiten Wellenweben
In deines Lebens Werdestrom?Bist du es selbst, der sich
Im Raumesfühlen, im Zeiterleben
Das Wort erschafft, dich fremd
Erfühlend in Raumes Seelenleere,
Weil du des Denkens Kraft
Verlierst im Zeitvernichtungsstrome.Ex deo nascimur
In Christo morimur

Fifth Review Lesson
My dear sisters and brothers! Today, once again, new members have joined this school. It is not possible to give the introduction about the duties and significance of this Michael School every time. Therefore, I must ask those members who, as I will say at the end, approach the new members to give them the mantric sayings, to also give them this introduction, which is necessary for everyone who wants to be a member of this school to know.
And so we will begin immediately, today once again, to inscribe in our souls the words that resonate to those who are open enough to hear them from everything that surrounds us humans in the realms of nature, in the hierarchies of the world. In the past, these words have resounded to human beings from all stones and plants, clouds, stars, from the sun and moon, from springs and rocks; they resound to them in the present; they will resound to them in the future:
O human being, know thyself!
Thus resounds the word of the world.
You hear it with the power of your soul,
You feel it with the power of your spirit.Who speaks so powerfully?
Who speaks so heartfeltly?Does it work through the vast radiation of space
Into the experience of being in your mind?
Does it sound through the waves of time
Into the stream of becoming in your life?Is it you yourself who,
In the feeling of space, in the experience of time,
Creates the word, feeling yourself alien
Feeling yourself in the emptiness of space,
Because you lose the power of thought
In the stream of time's destruction.
Now, my dear sisters and brothers, in describing the path of knowledge, we have reached the point where we stand at the abyss of being before the guardian. The guardian of the threshold has made it clear to us how that which surrounds us in the outer world can never reveal our own being to us, how all looking at the realms of nature, at that which lives and weaves below and from the earth, that which shines and speaks above from the realm of the stars — as far as we can see it with our senses, as far as we can see it with our minds — that all this offers nothing that can enlighten us about the nature of our own selves, that dark and gloomy is this brightness, this glittering in the sunshine, this weaving and living, that is so great and powerful, so beautiful and glorious in relation to the outer world, that it remains dark and gloomy for our true self-knowledge.
Then it has been described to us how we gradually approach the Guardian, who forms himself as a spirit figure out of the clouds, shows himself to us in our own image, but also shows us what we must strive for as human beings in order to attain self-knowledge.
Then we have stepped before this Guardian of the Threshold. He showed us how the true form of our will, feeling, and thinking appears before the face of the gods. He showed us how that which lives within us as despondency and fear of knowledge, as hatred of knowledge, as doubt of knowledge, is nevertheless within us because our times have sunk it into us. He showed us the animal forms of our will, feelings, and thoughts. The guardian of the threshold had to have a devastating effect on us in order to awaken in us, precisely through this devastation, those forces that lead to true self-knowledge from the weaving and essence of our own soul.
But then the guardian of the threshold lifted us up, showing us first how our thinking, as we have it in ordinary life, is the corpse of the living thinking that we carry within us before we descended from the spiritual-soul worlds into physical-sensory existence. He showed us the Guardian of the Threshold, how with our bodies we are a coffin for the living thinking that is dying with our earthly existence, which lies as a corpse in this coffin. But we use this corpse in the ordinary abstract thinking that we carry within us between birth and death to comprehend the things of the physical-sensory world.
Precisely when we realize how dead this thinking is, then we will understand from the realization of dead thinking what we can learn from the corpse that lies before us. We look at this corpse. We say to ourselves: as it lies before us as a corpse, it could never have come into being; it is what remains of a human being who was alive in spirit and soul within it. The living human being, the animated human being, the spiritual human being had to precede what lies before us here as a corpse. Only then do we recognize the reality of the corpse when we consider what precedes it. And so we approach the reality of our thinking when we become aware of it in its deadness and know that it is the corpse of the living thinking that was within us before we descended into physical, sensory earthly existence.
And so the Guardian reminds us how our feeling is only half alive, our will, however, is completely alive, but all this liveliness only comes to our consciousness externally.
And so the Guardian of the Threshold reminds us how, in order to gradually find the transition to a living grasp of thinking, we should look up to the heights of heaven; how we should look into the vastness of the worlds in order to grasp the nature of feeling, and into the depths of the worlds, into the depths of the earth, in order to sense the nature of will.
At the same time, however, the Guardian shows us how we are placed with our thinking—by looking up into the world thinking in which our earthly human thinking is rooted—between light and darkness; how light can become dangerous to us if we devote ourselves to it one-sidedly; how darkness can become dangerous to us if we devote ourselves to it one-sidedly; how we must seek direction and goal in the middle between light and darkness for our thinking if it is to find the truth; how we stand in the middle between warmth and cold with our feeling; and how, if we surrender to warmth, we can disappear in the lustful glow of feeling, or on the other hand, harden in the cold.
The Guardian of the Threshold shows us how we should walk the Christ path through the warmth and coldness of the soul. The Guardian of the Threshold shows us that when we seek the will in the depths of the earth, we find ourselves in the middle between life and death; how life wants to make us disappear into powerlessness; how death wants to cramp us into nothingness; how we must find the direction for the will in the middle. That, my dear sisters and brothers, is what has been described since ancient mystery times as the middle way that the human soul must walk if it is to continue on the paths marked out for it into the spiritual realm.
The guardian of the threshold before whom we stand—before whom we stand as the serious first representative of Michael, for the real leader of our school is Michael—gives us further guidance on how we can go beyond the appearance of thinking, beyond this dead thinking, into the living essence of this thinking. To do this, we must first and foremost strictly observe the laws that are prescribed in golden letters to every esotericist — they need only grasp the gold — which the Guardian now repeats to us.
He draws our attention to how the yawning abyss of being lies before us, how we must fly over it because we cannot cross it with earthly feet, how we will then enter the spiritual world, for over there, beyond the yawning abyss of being, deep, night-covered darkness still lies before us. But we must enter this deep, night-covered, cold darkness across the yawning abyss of being. From it must come warmth, from it must come light that illuminates our own self, that warms our own self. We cannot find a firm foothold in the spiritual world if we do not remember at all times, when we are on the other side, the vow that our soul makes to itself when it now stands in this situation, after receiving the earlier warnings, before the serious guardian of the threshold, who says to it:Do not forget that as long as you are an earthly human being, even when you cross over into the spiritual worlds, you must submit to the laws of the earthly realm when you return. When you enter the spiritual world with your thoughts, you must not believe that when you return, you can carry out your work and your thinking in the earthly environment and fly enthusiastically within the earthly environment. You must reserve flying for your thoughts when you are in the spiritual world. You must practice deep inner, intimate modesty to want to be a human being among human beings again and again when you return to the ordinary world of ordinary consciousness. It is precisely from such a modest desire to remain in the world, not applying the laws of spiritual life to the ordinary world, that you will gain the strength to grasp thinking in such a way that it can serve you in spiritual worlds.
The Guardian of the Threshold therefore teaches us about thinking as follows:
You ascend into the earthly realm
With the power of your will;
Enter earthly existence as a thinker,
It will show you the power of thought
As your own animal nature;
The fear of your self
Must be transformed into soul courage.
We must go through this; by allowing the mantric saying to work on us, we must go through this. If we want to enter into the essence of the earth, that is, into the spirit of the earth, we must, my dear sisters and brothers, come to see how our thinking is still animalistic. We must experience fear of our own self, which is still animalistic; then fear will give birth to its opposite, the courage we need. This is the urgent, strong, but serious admonition of the Guardian of the Threshold, which cuts deep into our hearts. He admonishes us that we should feel this way when we enter the element of the earth. We have heard about entering the elements from the Guardian of the Threshold.
He further admonishes us that when we enter the liquid element as sentient beings, into the world of water beings, we should not be aware of fear of ourselves, but should become aware of how we sleep dreaming, dream sleeping in this water element, in this liquid element, which is our formative force, as we have seen. And precisely when we become aware that we live in our human earthly feelings as in plant existence, then this feeling will bring us to awakening; for it will show us how lame our self is. Then we will awaken, when we first have the humility to recognize the lameness of our self.
The third thing is that when we feel ourselves in the air with our will – first in the earth element with our thinking, then in the water element with our feeling, then with our will in the air element – then we will feel in the air element that we have nothing in this will at first except what our ordinary memory gives us: memory image forms. We must grasp these image forms that rest in our thoughts, that are passive in our thoughts, with our will, then we grasp the air being in the inner image. And our own soul will appear to us when we feel ourselves in the air being, as if it were frozen. When we think away the earth, think away the air, think ourselves breathing in the air being: how frozen we will appear to ourselves. But it is precisely from the feeling of this cold death that we are going through that the spiritual fire will come to us, which we need in order to truly grasp our will.
These are profound sayings that the guardian of the threshold presents to our soul. Only when we pay close attention to them and fall into fear of ourselves, of how we become insignificant when we feel ourselves to be only thinking in relation to the earth, will the courage of the soul grow into living thinking. When we feel how lame we are when we feel on earth, half-alive, paralyzed, the strength will grow that allows us to awaken, so that we are as if awakening in spiritual life with the feeling we had before we descended into physical earthly existence. Then, when we descend into our memory, want to feel with our memory in the air weave, in that moment we feel as if we are sclerotic and coldly chilled. But just when we feel this cold shiver within us, the opposite of the cold will awaken, the spirit fire, which will show us how the will that we have only been able to sleep through on earth is rooted in the living will we had before we descended into earthly existence. We must recognize ourselves in our being before we descended into physical earthly existence. The Guardian of the Threshold reminds us of this.
Regarding feeling, his words are:
Regarding feeling, the Guardian says:You live with the water being
Only through the dream weaving of feeling;
Penetrating the awakening water being,
The soul within you will become
A dull plant existence;
And the lameness of your self
Must lead you to wakefulness.
With regard to volition, the guardian speaks:
You ponder in the breeze
Only in forms of memory images;
Seizing volitional air beings,
Your own soul will threaten you
As cold, rigid stone;
But the cold death of your selfhood,
Must give way to the fire of the spirit.
[The three-stanza mantra is now written on the board with the corresponding underlining; see page 850:]
The guardian with the utmost seriousness:
You ascend into the essence of the earth
With the power of your will;
Enter earthly existence as a thinker,
The power of thought will show you
Your own animal nature;
The fear of your self
Must be transformed into soul courage.You live with the water being
Only through the weaving of feeling dreams;
Penetrating awakening water being,
The soul within you
Will give itself as a dull plant existence;
And the lameness of your self
Must lead you to wakefulness.You ponder in the breeze
Only in memory-image forms;
Wanting to grasp air beings,
Your own soul will threaten you
As cold, rigid stone;
But the cold death of your selfhood
Must give way to the spirit's window.
We descend from thinking into feeling, into memory, when we allow this saying to work on us. And as we descend into the depths of memory, where otherwise the soul's life disappears, the images of memory rise again: There is the boundary, as a mirror is a boundary. What comes into us from outside approaches like a wall of memory, then it always comes back again. Just as one cannot see behind the mirror, so one cannot see behind the wall of memory. But here the guardian of the threshold warns us how we must pierce through what is otherwise a boundary in order to enter the spiritual realm.
After the guardian of the threshold has thus referred us more to our inner being with his admonitions and given us time to process the content of these sayings in our souls – just as we should, when we use these mantric sayings in meditation, we should take a long, long time at this point so that they can work their power within us and truly carry our ego down through thinking, feeling, and remembering into that which lies behind all memory — then the Guardian admonishes us how we should behave toward the outer world. First he referred us more to our inner being, now he admonishes us how we should behave towards the outer world.
He points us upward again to the light, which lives only in the illusory life of our thoughts. It is the light that thinks within us. When the light enters us, it thinks within us. But in earthly life, the light is only an illusion that thinks itself. If we remain with this, untrue spiritual beings will lead us into the delusion of selfhood instead of the truth of selfhood. But we must understand that if we immerse ourselves only in thinking, we will only fall into the delusion of selfhood. And it is precisely through this understanding of ourselves as earthly human beings after the delusion of selfhood that we can come to our senses, to that awareness that makes us attentive, in thinking—which is indeed capable of carrying us across the abyss of being — to grasp the earthly hardships with all their gravity, and we will gradually find support in experiencing being in our thinking:
You hold fast to the power of light's shine
Only in your inner thoughts;
When light's shine thinks itself within you,
Then untrue spirit beings
Will arise in you as delusions of selfhood;
Reflection on earthly hardships
Will sustain you in your human existence.
Let us continue. The Guardian of the Threshold admonishes us to hold fast in our feelings only to the wonderful, all-pervading world forms. But if we hold fast only to these world forms in our feelings, our spiritual experience remains powerless. The self-being suffocates if we only ever stare, feeling, at what has been formed in the world. But when we begin to love, to love all that is already in the values of the earth around us: we find being in feeling; and we save, save our humanity:
You hold on to world formations
Feelings only within;
When world form feels itself within you,
Then powerless spiritual experience
Will suffocate your sense of self within you;
But love for earthly values
Will save your human soul.
In ordinary life, we try to grasp thoughts of earthly values; but we only hold on to the appearance of light if we do not reflect on what is heavy in need on earth. We only hold on to vague feelings about what is forming in the world if we do not experience this earthly weaving in forms and shapes with love.
And from world life: What can we hold on to through our will? Our will is in world life. But if we initially hold on to it only in our will, we will again fail to enter into being. When world life fully encompasses us, destructive spiritual lust will kill the self-experience within us. Immersing ourselves in the will of the world produces spiritual lust that kills us. But if we develop our will in accordance with higher worlds, if we think what we want in the physical-sensory world in such a way that gods reign within us, inspiring and impelling our will, if we will in the service of the gods, then God allows his being to reign in us as human beings, and we feel a real being in the God-imbued will:
You hold on to worldly life
Only in your inner will;
When worldly life fully encompasses you,
Then the destructive lust of the spirit
Will kill the self-experience within you;
But earthly will, devoted to the spirit,
Allows God to reign in man.
These are the three warnings that the Guardian of the Threshold calls out to us in the most serious moment.
[The mantra is now written on the board; see page 851.]
The Guardian speaks as if the word of the world itself were sounding:
You hold fast to the power of light's radiance
Only in your inner thoughts;— it is as if the Guardian wanted to make us aware of what we are actually doing. We have not yet gone beyond forming mere thoughts of light's radiance, he says — [it continues:]
When light's radiance thinks itself within you,
Then untrue spirit beings
Will arise in you as delusions of selfhood;
Reflection on earthly hardships
Will sustain you in your human existence.You hold fast to feelings only within yourself about the world's form.
Again, the admonition that in our vague, blurred feelings we have alive only that which is wonderfully formed by the whole world. The world's form enters the microcosm first in the vagueness of feelings.
— that is, not when we feel the form of the world with our feelings, but when the form of the world penetrates us, the macrocosm into the microcosm —When the form of the world feels itself within you
— we become aware of our own powerlessness — [it continues:]When the form of the world feels itself within you,
Then spirit experience becomes powerlessWhen the form of the world feels itself within you,
Then spirit experience becomes powerless
And suffocates the selfhood within you;
But love for earthly values
Will save your human soul.We need this salvation, for we are in the process of crossing over.
If we carry only thoughts that have the light of truth, if we carry only feelings that have an undefined world form, then the true light on the other side will destroy the delusion of selfhood, it will destroy the powerless feeling, the sleeping, the spirit experience. We need to reflect on the needs of the earth, on everything that suffers on earth, so that we may cross over worthily into the spiritual world and not be killed by worldly thinking. We need love for what is valuable on earth, so that we do not disintegrate on the other side when we cross over with our feelings, the undefined ones.And thirdly, we need for the will this [it will be continued];
You hold on to world life
Only hold fast to inner will;
When worldly life takes full hold of you,— and that is what will happen over there —
Thus, the destructive lust of the spirit
Will kill the self-experience within you;
But earthly will, devoted to the spirit, Allows the God in man to reign.We must not carry over into the spiritual world what we have here on this side; we must carry over a stronger soul than we have here. We must prepare the soul.
[The words in quotation marks below are underlined on the board as they are spoken:]
For over there we find the “power of light.” It lives in our “thoughts.” But that is not enough; we need “contemplation of earthly needs.” . Compassion for all earthly suffering will preserve our “humanity.”
Because we are passing into the “world forms,” we need more than just our ‘feelings’ over there; we need “love for earthly values,” for everything that is already valuable on earth, then the “human soul” will be saved. - Here [in the first saying]: preserving our humanity; here [in the second saying]: saving the human soul.
We must enter into the full “world life,” which has only a faint reflection in our “will,” too thin to cross over. And we must develop “spiritually devoted earthly will” so that the “God in man” can reign.
This is the progression:
Light-Shine-Power
World-Shaping
World-LifeThoughts
Feelings
Willing.We need:
Reflection on earthly needs,
Love for earthly values,
Spiritually devoted earthly will;because we need:
the preservation of our humanity,
the salvation of the human soul,
the reception of the ruling God within ourselves.That, my dear sisters and brothers, is what the Guardian places upon our souls so that we may develop what are the wings of the soul in order to cross over.
And now there is only one thing left for us to do for the next esoteric lesson to be held on Wednesday, and that is to receive those mantras for our souls through the Guardian of the Threshold, who in this case is Michael's representative at the threshold to the spiritual realm — those mantras that are the first to be spoken when one arrives in the spiritual realm — which still stands before man in these mantras as a deep, night-covered, cold darkness.
But today, after this has come before our soul, we want to reflect again on that which speaks to us from all beings, calling us to all that the Guardian of the Threshold has placed before us with such certainty:
And that which comes before us in the words of the Guardian of the Threshold: If we accept it with the right attitude, then it is indeed the Michael message of this rightly existing Michael School, then Michael's being reigns in this hall, blessing and strengthening that which approaches our souls. Therefore, that which approaches our souls may be marked with Michael's sign and Michael's seal; but Michael's sign is: [The Michael sign is drawn on the board; see page 850]; and Michael's seal, which he has pressed upon that which has been the Rosicrucian spirit for centuries, which is expressed as the Rosicrucian spirit in the saying:O human being, know thyself!
Thus sounds the word of the world.
You hear it with the power of your soul,
You feel it with the power of your spirit.Who speaks so powerfully to the world?
Who speaks so heartfeltly?Does it work through the vast radiance of space
In your mind's experience of being?
Does it sound through the waves of time
In the stream of your life's becoming?Is it you yourself who,
In the feeling of space, in the experience of time,
Creates the word, feeling yourself alien
Feeling yourself in the emptiness of space,
Because you lose the power of thought
In the stream of time's destruction.Ex deo nascimur
In Christo morimur
Per spiritum sanctum reviviscimusThis is spoken with Michael's seal in such a way that we accompany the first words with the gesture:
[the lower seal gesture is drawn on the board]
the second words are accompanied by the gesture:
[the middle seal gesture is drawn on the board]
Accompany the third words with the sign:
[the upper seal gesture is drawn on the board]
The first sign is called
[written into the lower seal gesture;]
I admire the Father
the second gesture [written into the middle seal gesture:]
I love the Son
the third gesture [written into the upper seal gesture:]
I connect myself to the Spirit.
And so we may take what has been said as spoken, as it is affirmed by Michael's sign, as it is affirmed and confirmed by Michael's seal, which is just like this, like this, like this [the three seal gestures on the board], but which is also pressed onto the Rosicrucian words.
And so shall the sayings that have been given through the sign of Michael live, so shall that which lives through the Michaelic Rosicrucian School be sealed for your souls:
[The Michael sign is made.]
[The three sealing gestures are made and the following is spoken:]
Ex deo nascimur
In Christo morimur
Per spiritum sanctum reviviscimus
My dear sisters and brothers, the mantric sayings given in this school may only be possessed by those who are legitimate members of the school, that is, who are in possession of the blue certificate. Anyone who is not present at a lesson at which they could already be present according to the date of their admission – note this sentence: The sayings from those lessons that they could have attended according to the date of their admission – they can obtain these sayings from one of the other members who have lawfully received them here at the school. However, permission must be obtained either from Dr. Wegman or from myself.
It is not an administrative measure, but is based on an occult school, that a real act precedes the handing over of something of this kind. However, only those who want to give the sayings to someone else, not those who want to receive them, can ask Dr. Wegman or me. So you can ask someone for the sayings. But you cannot ask as the one who wants to receive them; you must ask the one who wants to give them. It is completely futile if the recipient asks.
Anyone who copies other things may keep them for eight days; after that, however, they are obliged to burn them, because what is to live through this school in the first place should only live within the school and not come out into the outside world. These are not coercive measures or arbitrary measures. They are all based on occult laws. For if anything falls into the wrong hands, it ceases to be effective for all those who are supposed to benefit from it. So if mantras or the content of what is given here are misused by being given to the wrong people, these mantras and what is given here lose their effectiveness for those sitting here.
These are facts, not arbitrary measures. I only have to give the schedule for tomorrow. It will be as follows: at half past nine here, the course on pastoral medicine; at noon, the speech formation course; at half past five, the course for theologians; and at eight o'clock, the lecture for members.
