The world in which man lives today was not originally intended for him by the gods, ordained by the gods. Man therefore lives in the sensual world, in a world to which he must adapt. Before the Lemurian period, before the Luciferic impact, man was only intended to be in the environment of the earth, but in such a way that he could symbolically experience and reflect his inner experience in eyes, ears and brain. (We have the higher senses from Lucifer.) No senses as we have them now were intended [for humans by the divine spiritual beings]. Eyes, ears, brain as we have them now, we have received from Lucifer. As a breathing-knowing being, the human being is intended by the gods, and in inhaling, holding the breath and exhaling, a whole world enters into the human being.

The gods, the Elohim, and Yahweh as their regent, had chosen the earth as their laboratory, as their workshop, and now, invisible to man, they have to do their work on earth. What do the gods create from? From the dust of the world! World dust is something great, something tremendously important. Depending on whether man is truthful or untruthful, moral or immoral, the gods can use or not use what falls away from him - the body that becomes dust. For new worlds, world dust soaked in truth is taken. World dust soaked in untruthfulness and immorality gives slag, moons; such bodies where beings of that kind take up residence.

Lucifer has put the human head on us. From the occult point of view, the brain is the most unsuitable organ of knowledge. The etheric body of man is so constituted that its etheric brain is still most similar to the physical organ corresponding to it.

The hands are already quite unlike the etheric organs they correspond to, and the feet are even more unlike them. In women in particular, they appear almost comical in relation to the corresponding etheric organs.

If we know how to develop the lotus flower of the heart, the twelve-petalled one, then we will have learned to think correctly with our hands, which, like the nerves in the brain, must also be crossed. Thus, for the occultist, there are two different images of the lotus flower of the heart, as they are obtained by the ordinary person when looking through the crossed nerves. The occultist mistrusts himself, so he allows himself to be given two imaginative images, spiritual images.

But we must also learn to think with our feet.

The occultist can now observe that all initiates who are not embodied in the flesh, such as Saint-Martin, are gathering around the Christ who will come to Earth in the etheric.

We are in very important times of decision and decisive struggles, and it is by no means certain whether the earth will remain the workshop of the gods or not.

Black magic and its practices, as well as various Jesuit nefarious exercises, are aimed at snatching the earth from the gods, but without rendering the cosmic dust unusable.

What you have been told today are secrets of the creative powers of the universe. Think about it, meditate on it.

The first prayer distinguishes us from all other such endeavors, which are based on documents or on a traditional wisdom. We do not refer to anything like that, we only tie in with the work that has been done, with what has actually been achieved.

In the near future, among other things that will be undertaken against us, our occult movement will also be tried to be suspected and vilified, so we should know this, to which we are joining.

In the spiritual realm, a community like ours exists, but it has only as much justification as souls profess it as the truth. And if someone does not like something about it, they do not need to be part of it. We do not claim to be an order, a Rosicrucian movement or anything of the kind, but our aim is to represent the truth in such a way that we do not claim wisdom as our own, but we do want to appropriate the work that has flowed from it as wisdom.

Wisdom is there; there was an ancient wisdom treasure of humanity, as shown in the “Guardian of the Threshold” by the Grand Master. And how one has to relate to this, that is, how one advances in the occult life, is shown to us by Maria in the second scene with Thomasius. It would be more convenient to give a prescription for all, but it had to be shown in our Western movement how people of the special kind of Thomasius, Strader, Capesius and Maria go the initiation way.

“Compasses and Rule” means: We adopt your customs. Such prayers contain in words everything we need, as do the Mystery Dramas of Dr. Steiner. Every word is there in its place and full of occult meaning. Nothing, nothing is set and said for a reason other than its spiritual meaning and power, as it is.

The opponents of spirituality, such as Haeckel, carry their spiritual darkness deeply hidden within themselves and their rage and anger is actually directed against themselves. Because they cannot access their deepest soul life in life, they show themselves quite differently towards spirituality after death and are most easily summoned, for example, in spiritualistic séances.

Nietzsche is very interesting in this respect; he found it difficult to let go of his material side and that is why he presented such a strange picture to the seer during his illness. The man Nietzsche, this strange personality, lying on the sofa and the aura around him. The split in the ego comes to expression in such personalities; while the consciousness is materialistic, the subconscious is spiritual.

“Brethren of the Future…” – We have no name either, because Lucifer is the patron of every external foundation of an association or society.

Upon admission to the first degree, it is also said: The sign of the first degree will be the expression in the future of self-knowledge or of what is understood by “know thyself”.

About the desolation of the world and of man. The desolation of art, science, industry, trade and so on. Everything is growing old. In the future, people will be around as if they had no ego; they will move and work like robots.

Eduard von Hartmann's pessimism: blowing up the Earth is the best thing to do. In a way, his pessimism seems justified in the face of such a bleak future. Although we feel deepest sorrow about it, we can still be grateful to our karma for what we receive here, because then, in the future – as if floating above it – we will be able to give these automaton-like people something to guide them, something like a substitute for the missing ego. This is what the master says when asked about it.

The knowledge and understanding of the development of our earth is the power and the means for us to advance in the occult. If we look at our earth, we see that it is in a state of dying. We know that human life has an ascending phase, lasting until about the age of thirty, and a descending phase. The same is true of the Earth. The ascending half can be reckoned as lasting until about the middle of the Atlantean period. From that point on, it would be a matter of time before it died or became desiccated; but through certain interactions, this time was delayed until the time of the Mystery of Golgotha, for through the Mystery of Golgotha the new, rejuvenating forces of youth were bestowed upon the Earth once more. Science also tells us that the Earth is dying, disintegrating, and that we are walking on it. The physicist, he already speaks today of the heat death of our earth, of the dissolution, the decay. (The geology of Eduard Sueß is cited and discussed.)

What does occultism, which dissects the Christ impulse, as we do here in view of our three altars and our three candlesticks, have to say about this?

If we go back to the ancient mystery and wisdom sites, which our union is to follow, we do not need to go far back at all, only to the Zarathustra teachings, where the best feelings and sensations were dedicated to the worship of fire. What lives in this fire, in this sacrificial flame? Those who have followed our explanations in our intimate meetings in recent times will not be surprised when it is said: Ahriman lives in this fire or is connected with this fire. What does the physicist describe when he speaks of the heat death of the earth or when he describes his other investigations? He describes the deeds of Ahriman.

But for the Zarathustrians, this fire was something else. The connection with the good powers was there, he sought and cultivated them in the worship of the fire, the powers that save and give the strength of the soul not to be burned.

This earth will indeed suffer a heat death and burn up and scatter into the universe, but the souls that are connected with the good powers will have the strength to save from destruction that which comes from the rejuvenating impulse of the Mystery of Golgotha and to carry it over into future earthly developments, what will shine as the Jupiter sun over the future Earth.

Everything that comes from ordinary science today is old and withered, and it opens up a desolate wasteland in the human heart and soul; for when the physicist draws his conclusions to a close, he arrives at the heat death of the universe. - And what comfort does he then give to humanity? Only that it will be a long time before it happens! – Dreary and bleak is the prospect for the human soul. There is only one way, only one single way, that leads to new life. The earth has grown old and withered; it is doomed; a corpse that withers, it is. But a divine being has descended from the heights of the divine spirit - the Christ being - and brought the earth the impulse of spring, new life.

Those who connect with Christ Jesus will find the way out of this earth to new life. Everything must arise anew on this earth through the Christ presence. People will no longer be able to work through the old impulses of wisdom, beauty and virtue or strength; new impulses must come through Christ. The old impulses will fail. And an architecture will arise that presents only the ridiculous; a painting, a poetry, a medicine will arise that no longer exert any real effects. People will rejoice when all kinds of airplanes criss-cross the air, but every such airplane contributes to the death of the earth.

What then are our machines, what is our technology? We use metals for them that we tear out of the earth and remove from their divine purpose. Every machine is like a piece of flesh torn from the body of the earth; every machine contributes to its death.

If a number of souls can be found – and such souls must be found – who want to take up the Christ impulse, as it is advocated and explained here by true occultism, then these souls can emanate that which saves, that which carries the earth over to Jupiter. A new science, a new philosophy, a new art, a new painting, a new technique, a new medicine, a new commercial life must arise. And the Christ will be the great teacher for all branches of human life.

The Master of Wisdom showed the image of humanity's future when He was implored: a horrifying image - people walking around down there like automatons, who have lost their ego as if lost, who are deeply numbed by this materialistic culture that contains only the strength of old men. By their thirtieth year, when their youthful strength is spent, these people will be like automatons.

In the past, the destinies of the earth were guided from the outside by divine beings and the inherited divine powers were then there to help humanity to progress. Now man himself is to be a co-advisor to the gods (about the destiny of the earth) and to radiate powers from himself through the Christ impulse. And the Master of Wisdom has confirmed that you are called upon, when you have gone through the gate of death, to radiate the occult knowledge and truths that you have absorbed, to send them down from the spiritual worlds to Earth, to strengthen the souls of people who walk around down here like automatons. Think humbly and responsibly of how karma has led you to be called to this!

What does this breathing out of human deeds into the universe mean? The word “God”, “delight” has the same stem. Central Europe has a word that means “to delight”. In the past, God approached man from the outside during the day; it was called “divine delight”, a sacred delight.

The Master showed a second face; the first: a sad face, corresponding to the state of humanity; but the second a holy, inner delight, because through the Christ impulse, springing, sprouting, forces of spring can be sent out into the world. - Many words that have become trivial can become meaningful again through true occultism.

Angelic music is the harmony of the spheres. Aircraft are the disturbers of the harmony of the universe! We must develop inner warmth within us.

“My kingdom is not of this world.” We must understand this saying, which has been so often misunderstood, either through false asceticism or through false accusations by opponents, as if one wanted to know nothing of this world. We must understand it correctly, very correctly.

From the highest world, bring into this world the strength that only gives this world true essence. Doing our duty here in this world, but knowing that this world is not the world of Christ Jesus, that His power must be carried into this world alone. It would be a bad state of affairs in this world if that did not happen.

The time will come when people will be seduced by Lucifer and Ahriman to say and believe: My kingdom is of this world.

Doomsday mood sweeping the world. There was a doomsday mood around the year 1000. People sensed that Lucifer and Ahriman were loose, and they were loose. The power of Lucifer and Ahriman is growing weaker and weaker until the advent of the Christ into the world, when their power is most strongly suppressed.

4000 BC: People still knew about the spiritual world.
3000 BC: The heyday of Egyptian culture.
2000 BC: Abraham's calling.
1000 BC: The time of David, immediately followed by the building of the Temple of Solomon.
994-1049 AD: Odilo, the Abbot of Cluny. Zealotry. The zeal of a faith that clings to dogmas. A Napoleon of faith who conquers Europe. Violence and domination associated with this faith. A personality who accomplishes all this. She represents the victory of Lucifer, who conquers the power of faith of people to have them for himself. Basel public: I am the way, the truth and the life; we follow him, he will lead us.

Sign of the number under which a year stands. Very significant sign of the conversion of numbers, according to which is calculated. Earlier [the] six-system: dozen, everything according to the number 12; or 60 = 5x 12; the good twelve number. Now everything is according to the ten system, which means that 10 = 2x 5 is the number and the division that are entirely of Lucifer and Ahriman. If you spend a “six”, then the good power is introduced, that is, the money goes with it through the world. Nothing is evil or good in itself, only how it is placed in the world makes it appear evil.

The piety of Francis of Assisi is quite different from that of the ascetic monk Odilo, and it also stands in a different sign, in a different number - or good. The power of Lucifer and Ahriman will continue to grow stronger and stronger, and around the year 2000 they will be very strong.

The human development from 800 AD to 1600 AD: intellectual soul; now consciousness soul develops. Connected with this is the fact that the etheric body is becoming more and more loose; [one can] already see how the cloud of the etheric body goes its own way independently. Man will be less and less able to control the forces of his etheric body; his inner life will become poor and barren if it is not permeated and strengthened by spiritual science. Development of the consciousness soul. The emergence of the etheric body is a danger for man, resulting in a poverty of ideas if the etheric body is not permeated with spiritual forces drawn from spiritual science. The culture of the intellectual soul is still rich in ideas, art, literature, but now so poor in them.

Man will be dependent on the forces of economic life, and Ahriman will place his claws on his neck. He will be unfree if he does not consent to come to the spirit.

There are two things:

1. Lucifer has taken possession of the power of faith in man, which lives in dogmas. Year 1000 = Odilo, and he has not yet let go of that; and the two - Ahriman and Lucifer - have truly joined forces in our time.

2. Ahriman will increasingly take hold of money and economic life. [He has] his soldiers [in] industry and so on. Lucifer's soldiers [are] those who say they are fighting for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Odilo, also a messenger of Lucifer (also a pastor [Riggenbach]), will increasingly [...] say that they have the true faith.

Hatred against us. - Around the building they will have to fight against the year 2000, after many other things that one does not dare dream of today have passed over Europe. The building razed to the ground. But it must be there, even if it is imperfect, we are building spiritually today. 2086 many such there.

Where we leave a blank space, Norman timber-framed forms and the reverse. That which the good spirits already wanted to bring in around the year 1000, but were prevented by Ahriman and Lucifer, we now want to do, through the same spirits, to try to better understand the Christ.

“My kingdom is not of this world.” - Meditating on this in the soul keeps Lucifer and Ahriman at bay. For these are the words and powers of the true Christ.

Paracelsus, who was murdered. However, his etheric and astral bodies were not lost. His astral body passed into Goethe in [1797]. In the meantime, from Paracelsus' death until [1797], the astral body was in the devachan, in order to gain strength there. This astral body of Paracelsus, which was developed to such a high degree, had to enter into a human being again, so that it could continue to intuit from this human being. In “Faust” one notices the influence of Paracelsus.

In life, we often do not understand many things if we do not know the context. So there are now two directions in the outer world:

1) Rationalism or, as it is also called, modern monism. Here, everything is to be grasped by reason; everything spiritual is tried to be grasped by the intellect. It is the male principle that prevails here.

2) the direction, which carries the name spiritualism and related branches, modern occultism mysticism. Here the intellect is eliminated and things are grasped only with the mind. It is the female principle that rules here.

Now there is a saying in esotericism: Just as a man cannot have a child without a woman, so a woman cannot have a child without a man. According to this saying, it would not be possible for the two directions, which have only one-sided principles, to produce spiritual children; these directions would have to die out gradually.

Now this is not the case. What has happened now? There has been spiritual fornication.

In earlier times, preserved in myths, the sons of the gods sometimes connected with the daughters of the earth, they took a liking to these daughters of the brutalized people, connected with them and committed moral fornication with them. It was a very unfortunate generation that grew out of it. The goddess Hera did the same, allowing herself to be led to slaves and committing moral fornication with them.

Fornication has also been committed in the directions mentioned, in that entities from the spiritual world embodied themselves in the two currents and thereby furthered them; these are retarding forces in the host of Lucifer that do this.

Asuras remain behind on old Saturn. Satanic fire spirits on old Sun. The regent of fire spirits is Christ. Luciferic spirits fell behind on old Moon. Lucifer was at work in the Lemurian epoch, could be included in earth evolution, and worked as a liberator by giving men independence and enthusiasm for wisdom. Satanic Gods of hindrances began their work in the Atlantean epoch. Asuras are starting to work in the post-Atlantean epoch. They're the worst of the three and they mainly work into sexual life in the physical body. The many sexual aberrations today are to be ascribed to this strong influx. All forces of hindrances try to hold onto currently existing things that are still imperfect, carry them out and intensify them. Lucifers gave independence, egoity with egoism. Egoism, error and animal love are the first expressions of egoity, wisdom and highest spiritual love. We must bring about the respective transformations. The separation of the sexes took place in the third root race, it'll be overcome in the sixth root race; this must be prepared for in the sixth sub-race. Man's productive forces are becoming transformed. The productive force as such is the most sacred thing that we have, because it's directly divine. The more divine what we pull into the dirt is, the greater the sin. Later on the heart and larynx will be the productive organs in us. Just as the Word became flesh in Christ Jesus, so the flesh must become word when Christendom becomes perfected. That's the mystery of the Holy Grail, the holy love lance, the fertilizing sunlight that'll unite with Eva again. Rosicrucians' occult brotherhood is the seminary in which a human material must be educated for the coming age. A particularly bright light must always arise in especially dark times. Christ was born in the Oriphiel age. When Oriphiel rules again the spiritual light that was brought by Christian Rosenkreutz and is now being spread must have generated a host of clairvoyant men who are pioneers working consciously towards a goal. This will produce a separation into good and evil races. The fifth root race will perish through evil. Good and evil are still relatively undifferentiated and it's hard to see who's evil or good behind the flesh. When the forces of the masters and of the men who join them with their whole strength and will, and when the forces of the Gods of hindrances, Mammon, Satan, Asuras and their human followers intervene ever more mightily into human life and earth evolution, then good will develop into a divine good, and evil into a terrible Antichrist. Then every one of us needs world helpers and all the strength that he can only gain through the overcoming of suffering and evil. It's the aim of Theosophy and Rosicrucianism to summon men to this battle via such knowledge and to give them peace in the battle.

Occult training leads a man to freedom. He becomes the master of various beings who continually go in and out of his bodies by becoming their companion. These are phantoms in the physical body, ghosts in the etheric body, demons in the astral body and spirits in the ego. To learn to rule them a man must form a firm framework in the etheric body, just as there's a skeleton in the physical body. This framework for the etheric body is a pentagram with thinking in the head point, feeling in the arms and willing in the legs. One must also form a framework for the astral body, namely a hexagram with the head and heart points, two ears and two arms.

To arrive at this one must apply the following four principles: Learn to be silent and you'll get power; give up power and you'll get will; give up will and you'll get feeling; give up feeling and you'll get knowledge.

These are four stages to which a man ascends. Every suppression gives a certain power. If a man knows the spirits and beings who continuously rule and enslave him he no longer needs to be their slave. The first thing that a pupil must learn and do is pay attention to himself.

The mood of one's soul before and after an esoteric class must be quite different. It's not at all important whether a soul always remembers what it experienced in an esoteric class, but it must have the feeling that it took something with it. Just as one knows one's name, so one must bear what one received in an esoteric class in one's soul. One knows one's name when one is asked for it, even if one doesn't always repeat it to oneself. Likewise the stream of esoteric life must always rest in one's soul. Then esoteric life will deepen our soul ever more, and that's necessary for the coming time.

Our whole civilization has its origin in the spiritual world. That's where plans are made that govern our life on the physical plane. Down here we only see how one event after another takes place according to physical laws, but the great spiritual causes are hidden from us. It's events on higher planes of our existence that bring about physical events. Let's make this quite clear through an example.

An especially important event took place on the astral plane in November 1879. Since then esoteric life has taken on a quite different direction. The esoteric stream that lived in mankind since the 14^th century was replaced by a new one. Previously all occult life took place very quietly and hidden from the outer world under the direction of the archangel Gabriel (“annunciation”).

Something quite similar to a birth took place on the astral plane in 1879. What had slowly ripened since the 14^th century could now be carried into the world in a freer way, even though only for a few people. For Gabriel's rule was followed by that of the archangel Michael. He's the radiant sun that lets esoteric wisdom shine out into a small host of people. Materialism is included in the divine plan of creation and it has a purpose in the whole world. But the time has now come for the esoteric sun to shine brightly under Michael's radiant direction. For materialism's dark forces are increasing.

Michael's radiant rule will be followed by a dark, terrible age that starts about 2300. Together with Michael, a dark God has begun his rule—the God Mammon. For occultism Mammon isn't just the God of money. He's the leader of all base, black forces. And his hosts attack men's bodies and souls to corrode and ruin them. There's a lot of talk about bacteria today, and they influence a lot of things. In future they'll increase in a terrifying way, and many human bodies will waste away from terrible diseases and plagues. The brand of sin will be stamped on men's bodies for all to see. Another archangel—Oriphiel—will rule then. He must come to shake men up to their true vocation through terrible tortures. So that this can happen in the right way a small group of people must be prepared today to spread esoteric life in the black age 400–600 years from now.

One under Michael's rule who feels the urge to participate in spiritual life is called upon to serve archangel Michael and to learn under him so that someday he'll be mature enough to also serve the terrible Oriphiel in the right way. A sacrifice is demanded from those who want to dedicate themselves to a higher life. One should only want to receive spiritual life and experience an awakening if one later wants to use this to put oneself, one's will and everything one has in the service of mankind only.

In four to six centuries the small group of men who are being prepared today will serve the God Oriphiel so that mankind can be saved. If in that age men wanted to be spiritual leaders who hadn't been prepared to stand fast in all storms and to resist Mammon's hosts, they wouldn't be able to serve the God Oriphiel in the right way, and mankind would not be lifted out of their misery. So in order to do it we must work very earnestly now to fulfill our tasks then.

But when dark powers rage most terribly, the brightest light also shines. Oriphiel has ruled before. That was the time when Christ appeared on earth. Bad powers of degeneration and decadence were ruling everywhere on earth then. And the human race could only be shaken higher by terrible means. Oriphiel is called the archangel of wrath, who purifies mankind with a strong hand.

The story in the Bible where Christ swings a scourge to chase the money changers out of the temple has a deep meaning. Back when things were darkest on earth, Christ appeared as the savior of mankind. Oriphiel's reign ended 109 years after Christ's appearance, and he was replaced by Anael. Then came Zachariel, then Raphael; Samael ruled during the Renaissance and Gabriel from the 16^th century until 1879. Then Michael began to rule, and circa 2300 Oriphiel, the terrible archangel of wrath, will be ruling things. And as once before, spiritual light will shine into darkness brightly and radiantly. Christ will appear again on earth, although in a different form than before. We're called upon to receive him and to serve him.

When you, my sisters and brothers, let the spiritual life that streams into your soul live in you so that it reverberates in your meditations, you then have the right fruit. You should let what's received echo in your meditations. While you do that the spiritual powers of the world stream into you. The world is always flowed through by spiritual streams that proceed from the great masters of wisdom and of the harmony of feelings. The masters continuously pour streams of love and wisdom over humanity, but men's souls aren't always ready and open to receive them. But meditation words are magic words that open soul portals so that divine life can move in. That's why one shouldn't speculate with one's intellect about meditation words, but should open the soul for forces that are higher than merely intellectual ones. If one speculates about them with one's intellect then only forces that are already in one become active. But higher forces are supposed to awaken. One shouldn't want to solve riddles in one's meditation words, one should let them solve riddles, for they're much wiser than the intellect can ever be. That's why one should let them work on one and take in what they permit to flow into one's soul, let them live completely in one's soul.

Meditation words were born from the laws of the spiritual world and didn't arise through speculation. Something special lives in every vowel. Each of the vowels has a different sound value. And just as the soul feels the effect of sounds, so it should devote itself to the pictures that the words mediate to it. In meditation one should try to think as concretely as possible, and to be as far away as possible from abstract ideation.

Let's take a meditation formula that most of you know. In the first line:

Now one tries to permeate soft moonlight completely with one's love, to pour it into oneself, so that the mild light begins to radiate through the warmth of one's love, and in the flood of rays one feels the Godhead glowing in one's soul. In the following words:

But it's not only the pictures that live in the soul during meditation that draw us towards the divine and open the soul's portals. A deep wisdom and a high divine life has also been placed into the vowels. It makes a difference whether this or that vowel resounds in the soul. Let's take the vowel i. This always expresses a centralizing, a striving toward the center. The a means something quite different. It's an expression of an inner worship of the divine. The i strives towards the center of the universe, whereas the a(h) remains distant and bows before the Holiest in devotion. So if we look at our formula:

This is just one way of understanding the formula, and one small part of the deep wisdom that rests in it. It would be confusing if I wanted to tell you all the deep secrets that are hidden in it. There's no letter and no sign in it that doesn't have a deep, deep meaning. That's the way the divine word of creation resounded when it once let the universe arise.
