Daß er gesunder Meinung nur genügt,
Ihr werdet dies doch nicht bezweifeln können,
Wenn ihr auch mich als Träumer schätzen wollt.
BÜROCHEF:
Gewiß, das Urteil, das Romanus fällt,
Es hat Gewicht - und Unrecht wär's, wenn ich
Nicht seine Meinung über meine stellte... .
HILARIUS:
Wer eines Werkes Lebensfähigkeit
Zu prüfen hat, der überdenkt gewöhnlich,
Ob sich Bedürfnis, ob sich Neigung auch
Für seine Arbeit werden zeigen können.
Er frägt nach Dingen, die das Leben fordert,
Und wagt, was solcher Vorbedacht begründet.
Wir wollen jetzt auf andrem Grunde bauen.
Vertrauen nur in das, was Menschen wollen,
Soll uns bewegen, Gut und Kraft zu wagen.

Am besten wär's, wenn sich Hilarius
Zur Trennung von dem Manne könnt entschließen
Der tüchtig wohl in altbewährten Bahnen
Die Arbeit leisten kann, der Geistesschwingen
Doch nie bemerken ließ, die jetzt benötigt,
Wer gottgetreu als Rater dienen soll.
Mit Zaudrern darf sich nicht zum Werke einen,
Wer schaffen will, was sich Gedanken nur
Entbinden kann, die fern von allem sind,
Was sich Erfahrung nur und Tagesmeinung
Bequem zu Bildnern seiner Ansicht macht.
ROMANUS:
Es scheint, daß eurem Blicke sich entzieht,
Was wichtig ist, um Gottgetreu nicht nur,
Um auch dem Freunde jetzt gerecht zu werden.
Es hätte Gottgetreu sein Werk wohl nie
Durch seine eignen Kräfte führen können.
Er hat von seinem Vater es ererbt,
Der bis ins höchste Greisenalter rüstig
Ein kluger Lenker seines Werkes war.
Die Söhne solcher Väter können sich
von frühen Lebenssorgen nicht bedrückt,
Im Geiste ihrer Neigung nach entfalten.
So konnte sich Hilarius in Ruhe
Dem schönen Geisteswege kraftvoll widmen,
Zu dem gewiß nicht Anlaß ihn geführt
Den er durch Reife seiner Seele fand;
Denn hoher Würden wert ward er gefunden,
Von Mächten, die auf diesem Wege herrschen,
Jedoch der Arbeit seines äußren Lebens
Entzog sich ganz sein Denken; DIE gedieh,
Weil ihm der Freund die Arbeit leisten konnte,
In deren Art er heimisch war — er hatte
Durch lange Zeit dem Vater schon gedient.
Es war die Arbeit fruchtbar, bis vor kurzem
Hilarius sie selbst besorgen wollte.
Seither geht alles dem Verfall entgegen.
