Ninth Act, partial prose
STRADER: It was a deep pain, agonizingly squeezing my soul, that escaped me when I was pushed out of Ahriman's realm and came back to myself; and this pain brought back all the memories of what I had experienced in that terrible realm. And I had to ask myself why I stood before this world power, which settles accounts with human lives and human destinies in order to see how it should direct things so that they happen according to its will. Twelve people were observed, and it was examined how the goal that Ahriman himself had set for my achievement could be reached with them.
BENEDICTUS: Surely you know why the souls of the twelve people were to be shown to you by Ahriman?
STRADER: The pain revealed to me how I myself had been close to a spiritual brotherhood in past lives, and how these people, in their own way, had wanted to promote or hinder my work at that time. I felt that I would continue to have dealings with them for many lives to come.
BENEDICTUS: The world powers direct their actions according to the laws that bring measure and number into being. The signs of this activity are contained in what is revealed to the outer senses. Just as the wisdom of the world once placed the sun in space so that its light passes over the twelve houses of the starry sky to bring about the events that are to be, so Ahriman wanted to bind the power that is inherent in you, like a human soul sun, to the twelve souls that these people harbor within themselves. What he wanted to achieve was to have measure and order according to the model of sunlight to the houses of the starry sky.
STRADER: So I myself, when I now direct my efforts into other channels than those intended by Ahriman, will have to make use of this knowledge.
BENEDICTUS: You could only recognize this when the spiritual discipleship sent you to the right place in the universe at the right time. You had to learn from Ahriman in pain what would give you the strength to continue your work.

MARIA: Johannes, you have seen how knowledge that can be gained in the human body is only an insubstantial web of images that are quite distant from world events. Anyone who wants to devote themselves effectively to becoming human must go to the powers that guide the course of events and also the forces of the souls. There he sees what alone is essential, and knowledge will then be for him only what the memory of such experiences grants him; not what he spins as a dream of thought far removed from all being on earth.
THOMASIUS: How often have I sought to acquire self-knowledge in such a thinker's image. The moment in Ahriman's realm = he could give me what gives me the beginning of this knowledge. From now on, I will have to continue to develop this beginning. Thus, my path in life is clearly marked out for me. In the future, I will have to stand before the world as two people. Through your and Benedictus' help, my soul has been granted many things that must reach other people. I will not withhold them from them. I will let what has been entrusted to me work in the world. But nothing of my other human being may flow into this good.
I will work on myself as if in a second world. I will know how unworthy this other human being is, whom my guides have formed in me for the world.
MARIA: Whether you walk in truth or error, you can always keep your prospects open, allowing your soul to penetrate further, if you courageously bear the necessities that originate from the spirit realm.

STRADER: Es war ein tiefer Schmerz, qualvoll die Seele zusammenpressend in mir, der sich mir entrang als ich aus Ahrimans Reich herausgedrängt, wieder zu mir selbst kam; und dieser Schmerz, er brachte mir alles wieder in Erinnerung, was ich erlebt hatte in dem furchtbaren Reich. Und fragen mußte ich mich, warum stand ich vor dieser Weltenmacht, die mit Menschenleben und Menschenschicksalen Rechnungen anstellt, um zu sehen, wie sie die Dinge lenken soll, damit sie in ihrem Sinne geschehn. Zwölf Menschen wurden betrachtet, und nachgesehn, wie sich mit ihnen das Ziel erreichen läßt, das Ahriman selbst sich stellte für meine Leistung.
BENEDICTUS: Bekannt ist dir doch wohl, warum die Seelen der zwölf Menschen dir durch Ahriman gezeigt werden sollten?
STRADER: Der Schmerz offenbarte mir, wie ich selbst in vergangnen Leben einer Geistesbrüderschaft nahe stand, und wie diese Menschen in ihrer Art damals mein Wirken fördern oder hemmen wollten. Ich fühlte, daß ich für viele Leben auch ferner mit ihnen zu tun haben werde.
BENEDICTUS: Die Weltenmächte lenken ihre Taten nach den Gesetzen, die Maß und Zahl in das Werden bringen. Die Zeichen dieses Wirkens sind in dem enthalten, was den äußern Sinnen sich eröffnet. Wie die Weltenweisheit dereinst die Sonne so in den Raum gestellt, daß ihr Licht an den zwölf Häusern des Sternenhimmels vorüberschreitet, um das Geschehn zu bewirken, das sein soll, so wollte Ahriman die Kraft, welche dir eigen ist, wie eine Menschenseelensonne binden an die zwölf Seelen, welche diese Menschen in sich bergen. Was er zustande bringen wollte, das sollte Maß und Ordnung haben nach dem Vorbild des Sonnenlichtes zu den Häusern des Sternenhimmels.
STRADER: So werde ich selbst, wenn ich nun in andre Bahnen meine Leistung lenke als ihr Ahriman zugedacht, diese Erkenntnis nützen müssen.
BENEDICTUS: Dergleichen konntest du nur erkennen, wenn dich die Geistesschülerschaft zur rechten Zeit an den rechten Platz im Weltenall sandte. Du mußtest bei Ahriman im Schmerze lernen, was dir Kraft zum weitern Wirken geben soll.

MARIA: Johannes, dir hat sich gezeigt, wie Erkenntnis, die im Menschenleibe sich erringen läßt, nur wesenloses Gewebe von Bildern ist, die dem Weltgeschehn recht ferne stehn. Wer sich dem Menschenwerden wirksam widmen will, muß zu den Mächten sich begeben, welche den Lauf der Dinge und auch die Kräfte der Seelen lenken. Da schaut er, was allein wesenhaft ist, und Wissen wird ihm dann nur sein, was Erinnerung an so Erlebtes ihm gewährt; nicht was er fern von allem Sein auf Erden als Gedankentraum spinnt.
THOMASIUS: Wie oft hab ich in solchem Denkerbild Die Selbsterkenntnis mir erwerben wollen. Der Augenblick in Ahrimans Reich = er konnte mir das geben, was mir dieses Wissens Anfang gibt. Ich werde fürderhin zu tun haben, diesen Anfang weiter auszubilden. So ist mir meine Lebensbahn klar vorgezeichnet. Wie zwei Menschen werde ich künftig müssen vor der Welt stehen. Durch deine und Benedictus Hilfe ist meiner Seele vieles gewährt worden, was von ihr zu andern Menschen dringen muß. Ich werde es ihnen nicht vorenthalten. Ich werde in der Welt wirken lassen, was mir anvertraut ist. Doch darf nichts von meinem andern Menschen in dieses Gut einfließen.
An mir werde ich wie in einer zweiten Welt arbeiten. Ich werde wissen, wie unwert dieser Mensch des andern ist, den meine Führer für die Welt in mir gestaltet haben.
MARIA: Ob du in Wahrheit oder Irrtum wandelst, Du kannst die Aussicht dir stets offen halten, Die deine Seele weiterdringen läßt, Wenn du Notwendigkeiten mutig trägst, Die aus des Geistesreiches Wesen stammen.
