It appears faithfully devoted to noble light,
Which shines from the roses and the cross,
The brotherhood we serve in humility.
It has adopted the consecration customs
Which at the beginning of the earth's creation the spirits
Wanted to reveal to mankind.
The servants of true mysticism cultivated them
Through long earthly ages, and proved
To the high masters whom we followed,
The grace...
Thus, only a small number of people
Be chosen at the beginning of time
To be bearers of that light which, hidden
In all other souls, works purposefully.
The chosen ones did not call this merit,
Only grace, necessary for the salvation of the world,
And if they had wanted to think otherwise,
They would have had to destroy themselves.
As faithfully as our covenant
Was carried firmly in the hearts of the brothers,
Who were more worthy of their office than we ourselves
And preceded us in high service,
So faithfully do we want to serve their goal in complete humility
With our weaker powers.
It is in the nature of our present situation
That we find little faith in you;
But the future will reveal things
That will surely dispel all doubts.
Therefore, to hearts that can believe,
And also to those that must doubt,
My words are freely addressed at this hour.
Decisive for meaningful striving
To the servants of our temple of consecration
The moment in which we find ourselves.
Through noble pursuit of knowledge, the man
Whose name is now praised by so many souls
Has accomplished a work that must be firmly supported,
Lest it suffer the fate
That ignorance has so often caused.

Dialogue between Maria and Thomasius — the latter accuses himself of being responsible for Theodora's death =
Felix Balde speaks of the signs that are sad at present but can bring good if the power of true love binds them; Theodora is dead and Strader has thus been robbed of the light of his life — but Theodora cannot remain united with Strader because she belongs to a world that cannot be fully connected with that of Strader — through this loss, Strader will transform the spirit of his work so that it turns not to evil, but to good.
The guardian of the threshold holds Thomasius back; he tells him that Theodora's death is a symbol of his destructive power —
MARIA:
You spoke words that reveal
How you are aware only of a part of the truth
That is necessary for you in your situation.
You have recognized that you are living in error;
But the true nature of your error
Remained unknown to you, and will remain so,
As long as spiritual vision has not yet
Allowed you to cross the threshold, where
A serious guardian keeps strict watch.
It separates the realm of the spirit from the realm of the senses.
You have often stood before this guardian;
But you always turned back
When you saw yourself at his threshold.
Therefore, avoid all further thinking,
Until you can know what you must do,
If you have erred and the error of your being
Has been revealed by worldly wisdom.

LUCIFER = continues to fight
THOMASIUS must cross the threshold. He can only move forward through the real self-knowledge that this brings. He is afraid of this. His feelings have turned to this.

BENEDICTUS:Feel yourself in the spirit of the world
And learn to be where you are accustomed to looking,
To feel within yourself what you otherwise strive to imagine as external
To your own being,
Then you will live your soul life here.
In the realm of the spirit, work is what on earth
must remain mere contemplation and speech.
What in the lower world means understanding,
is already effective creation here, and what you
entrust to the voice of the spirit in this place,
arises according to its time of maturity
as a being of existence that creates its own validity.
Seizing the tone of words and weaving it
In a manner appropriate to the forces at work,
You create here with the powers of spiritual striving
As you do in the earthly realm through the members of your body.

Maria will never let Lucifer influence her; through him, she has brought herself into opposition to Capesius. If she were ever to become unfaithful to her position, Capesius would be the one to admonish her—she owes him—she can only escape danger if she is united with Capesius at the place of consecration—

Durch lange Erdenzeiten, und erwiesen
Den hohen Meistern, welchen wir gefolgt,
Die Gnade...
So mußten Menschen nur gering an Zahl
Im Zeitbeginne auserwählet werden
Zu Trägern jenes Lichtes, das verborgen
In allen andern Seelen zielvoll wirkt.
Verdienst nicht nannten die Erwählten dies,
Nur Gnade, die zum Weltenheile nötig,
Und wenn sie anders hätten denken wollen,
So hätten sie sich selbst vernichten müssen.
So treulich diese unsre Bundessatzung
Die Brüder fest in ihren Herzen trugen,
Die ihres Amtes werter als wir selber
Im hohen Dienste uns vorangegangen,
So treulich wollen wir in voller Demut
Mit schwächere Kräften ihrem Ziele dienen.
Es liegt im Sinne unsrer Gegenwart,
Daß wir bei euch wohl wenig Glauben finden;
Doch wird die Zukunft Dinge offenbaren,
Die alle Zweifel sicher bannen werden.
Drum sei an Herzen, welche glauben können,
Und auch an solche, welche zweifeln müssen,
In dieser Stunde frei mein Wort gerichtet.
Entscheidend für bedeutungsvolles Streben
Erscheint den Dienern unsres Weihetempels
Der Augenblick, in dem wir uns befinden.
Durch edles Wissensstreben hat der Mann,
Dess Namen jetzt so viele Seelen preisen,
Ein Werk vollbracht, das fest gestützt muß werden,
Auf daß ihm nicht das Los beschieden sei,
Das Unverstand so oft verschuldet hat.

[Zum zweiten Bild] 1Diese Bemerkungen beziehen sich auf ein nicht in das Drama aufgenommenes Bild.
Dialog Maria — Thomasius — dieser beschuldigt sich, an Theodoras Tod schuld zu sein =
Felix Balde spricht von den Zeichen, die gegenwärtig traurig sind, doch Gutes bringen können, wenn die Kraft wahrer Liebe sie bindet; Theodora ist tot und Strader ist damit das Licht seines Lebens geraubt — doch darf Theodora nicht mit Strader vereint bleiben, weil sie einer Welt angehört, die nicht vollverbunden mit derjenigen Straders sein darf — Strader wird durch den Verlust den Geist seines Werkes so umwandeln, daß es nicht zum Bösen, sondern zum Guten ausschlägt.
Der Hüter der Schwelle hält Thomasius zurück; er bedeutet ihm, daß der Tod der Theodora das Symbol ist für seine zerstörende Kraft —
MARIA:
Du sprachest Worte, die erkennen lassen,
Wie dir bekannt erst in ein Teil des Wahren,
Das dir in deiner Lage nötig ist.
Du hast erkannt, daß du im Irrtum lebst;
Doch deines Irrtums wahre Wesenheit
Sie blieb dir unbekannt, und wird es bleiben,
So lange dich die Geistesschau noch nicht
Die Schwelle überschreiten ließ, an der
Ein ernster Hüter strenge Wache hält.
Sie trennt das Geistgebiet vom Sinnesreich.
Du standest oft wohl schon vor diesem Hüter;
Du wandtest aber stets zurück die Schritte
Wenn du an seiner Schwelle dich erblicktest.
Deshalb vemeide alles weitre Denken,
Bis du auch wissen kannst, was du zu tun,
Wenn du geirrt und deines Wesens Irren
Durch Weltenweisheit Wahres offenbarte.

[Zum dritten und achten Bild]
Thomasius = Ahriman imag., Lucifer lebend berührt in seinem tieferen Wesen = Maria hat die Grundbedingung geschaffen — Dadurch kann Thomasius die Hilfe finden, in Liebe weiterzuschreiten.
LUCIFER = kämpft weiter
THOMASIUS muß die Schwelle überschreiten. Er kann nur durch die dadurch herbeigeführte wirkliche Selbsterkenntnis vorwärts kommen. Er hat Furcht davor. Seine Gefühle sind in diese umgeschlagen.
[Zum sechsten Bild]
BENEDICTUS:Erfühle dich im Weltengeistessein
Und lerne sein, wo du gewohnt zu schauen,
In dir zu fühlen, was du sonst als Äußeres
Dem eignen Wesen vorzustellen strebst,
So wirst du leben hier dein Seelensein.
Im Geistgebiet ist Arbeit, was auf Erden
Betrachtung nur und Reden bleiben muß.
Was in der Untern Welt begreifen heißt,
Ist hier schon wirksam schaffen, und was du
An diesem Orte Geisteslauten anvertraust,
Ersteht entsprechend seiner Reifezeit
Als Daseinswesen, das sich Geltung schafft.
Der Worte Ton ergreifend und ihn webend
Dem Kräftewalten sinnvoll angemessen,
So schaffst du hier mit Geistesstrebensmächten
Wie in dem Erdgebiet durch Leibesglieder.

Maria wird nie von Lucifer sich etwas geben las-sen; sie hat durch ihn sich zu Capesius in Gegensatz gebracht. Könnte sie je untreu werden dieser ihrer Stellung, so wäre Capesius der Mahner — sie hat an ihn die Schuld — sie entgeht der Gefahr nur, wenn sie Capesius am Weiheorte vereinigt ist —
