The Soul's Awakening
Scene 2
Mountainous country; in the distance, Hilary's house, in the vicinity of the workshops, which are not seen. Hilary's house has no upper floor; no corners or angles, and is crescent shaped. A waterfall on the left of the stage, facing audience. A rivulet runs from the waterfall between little rocks across the stage.
Johannes is seen sitting on a rock to right, ignorant of the presence of Capesius, on the left of stage.
Johannes:
The towering masses with their silent life
Brim up the air with riddles manifold,
Yet ask no maddening questions such as slay
A soul that seeks not for experience
But only for serenity in which
It may behold life's revelation clear.
See how these colours play among these cliffs,
How calmly dumb the bare expanses lie,
How twilight clothes the woods in green and blue;
This is the world in which Johannes' soul
Will rest and weave to-morrow's fantasies.
Johannes' soul shall feel within itself
The depths and distances of this its world;
And by creative powers this soul shall be
Delivered of its hidden energy
And make known that the world's enchantment is
Only appearance glorified by art.
Yet could Johannes ne'er accomplish this
Did not Maria through her love awake
With gentle soul-warmth forces in his soul.
I must acknowledge fate's wise leadership
In drawing me so closely unto her.
How short a time it is since I have known
That she is by my side; how closely knit
Hath been in these few weeks Johannes' soul
Into a living unity with hers.
As spirit she lives in me though far off;
She thinks within my thought when I call up
Before my soul the objects of my will.
(Maria appears as a thought of Johannes.)
Maria here before me! but how strange!
She must not thus reveal herself to me!
This stern cold spirit-face, this dignity
That chills my earthly feelings—
'tis not thus Johannes will or can Maria see
Draw nigh to him. 'Tis not Maria—this—
Whom by kind fate's decree wise powers have sent.
(Maria disappears from Johannes' vision.)
Where is Maria whom Johannes loved
Before she had transformed his soul in him
And led it up to ice-cold spirit-heights?
And where Johannes, whom Maria loved,
Where is he now?—He was at hand e'en now.
I see no more Johannes, who did give
Me back unto myself with joy. The past
Cannot and shall not rob me of him thus.
(Maria again appears before Johannes' vision.)
Maria:
Maria as thou fain wouldst her behold
Lives not in worlds where shines the light of truth.
Johannes' spirit treads illusion's realm
By fantasy misled; set thyself free
From strong desire and its alluring power.
I feel in me the turmoil of thy soul;
It robs me of the calmness that I need.
'Tis not Johannes who directs the storm
Into my soul; it is another being,
O'er whom he was victorious in the past.
Now as a wraith it roams the spirit-plains;—
Once known for such, it straight will fade away.
Johannes:
That is Maria as she really is,
Who of Johannes speaks as he appears
To his own vision at the present time.
Long since into another form he rose
Than that which errant fancy paints for me
Because I am content to let my soul
Amuse itself with dreams in slothful ease.
But not yet doth this being hold me fast.
Escape from him I still can—and I will—
He often calls me to his side and strives
To win me for myself by his own powers—
Vet will I strive to free myself from him.
Long years ago he flooded my soul's depth
With spirit being; none the less to-day
No more do I desire to harbour him.
Thou stranger being in Johannes' soul
Forsake me—give me back my pristine self
Before thou didst commence thy work in me.
I would behold Johannes free of thee.
(Benedictus appears at Maria's side, equally as a thought of Johannes.)
Benedictus:
Johannes, heed the warning of thy soul;
The man who, flooding thee with spirit, rose
To be thy nature's primal energy,
Must at thy side still hold his faithful sway
And claim that thou transform his being's powers
Through thy will into human deeds. He must
Himself concealed, work out his task in thee,
That thou some day mayst reach what thou dost know
To be thy being's distant future goal.
Thy personal sorrow thou must bear through life
Fast locked within the chamber of thy soul.
So only shalt thou win thyself, if thou
Dost bravely let him own thee more and more.
Maria (seen as a thought of Johannes):
My holy earnest vow doth pour out strength,
Which shall preserve for thee what thou hast won.
Me shalt thou find in those cold fields of ice,
Where spirits must create light for themselves,
When darkness wounds and maims the powers of life.
Seek me within those cosmic depths where souls
Wrestle to win God-knowledge for themselves
By conquest that wins being from the void;
But never seek me in the realm of shades,
Where outlived soul-experience wins by guile
A transient life from out illusion's web,
And dream's frail phantoms can the spirit cheat;
So that in pleasure it forgets itself
And looks on serious effort with distaste.
(Benedictus and Maria disappear.)
Johannes:
She saith illusion ...
... yet 'tis passing fair.
It lives; Johannes feels in it himself,
He feels Maria's nearness in him too.
Johannes would not know how spirit works
To solve the riddles of the soul's dark depths.
He would create and would as artist work.
So may that part of him still lie concealed,
Which consciously would gaze on cosmic heights,
(He sinks into further meditation.)
(Capesius rises from his seat; as it were arousing himself out of deep thought.)
Capesius:
Did I not clearly feel within my soul
That which Johannes, dreaming over there,
Wrought as the pictures of his longing heart?
Within me glowed to life thoughts not mine own—
Such as he only could originate.
The being of his soul lived in mine own,
I saw him younger grown, as he beheld
Himself through vain illusion, and did mock
The ripe fruits that his spirit had achieved.
But hold! Why do I now experience this?
For seldom may the spirit-searcher see
The being in himself of other souls.
I mind, that Benedictus often said
That only he—and only for a while—
Can do this, whose good destiny ordains
That he shall be upraised one further step
Upon the spirit path. May I thus read
The meaning of what happened even now?
Seldom indeed could this thing be allowed;
For 'twould be terrible if aye the seer
Could see the inner being of men's souls.
Did I see truly?—or could it have been
Illusion let me dream another's soul?
I must enquire from Johannes' self.
(Capesius approaches Johannes, who now notices him for the first time.)
Johannes:
Capesius—I thought thee far from here.
Capesius:
Yet my soul felt. itself quite near to thine.
Johannes:
Near mine—at such a time—it cannot be!
Capesius:
Why dost thou shudder at these words of mine?
Johannes:
I do not shudder ...
(At this moment Maria joins them; this enables both Johannes and Capesius to speak their next words to themselves.)
(To himself):
... how his steady glance
Doth pierce me to mine inmost depth of soul.
Capesius (to himself):
His shudder shows me that I saw aright.
(turning to Maria.)
Maria, thou dost come in fitting time.
Perhaps thy tongue may speak some word of cheer
To solve the problem which oppresseth me.
Maria:
I thought to find Johannes here, not thee.
Forboding bade me seek the problem's weight
In him—but thou, I fancied, wast content,
Devoted to that glorious enterprise
Which we are offered here by Hilary.
Capesius:
What care I for it? It disturbs me now—
Maria:
Disturbs thee? Didst thou not express delight
To think thy projects might be realized?
Capesius:
What I have lived through in this fateful hour
Hath changed the former purpose of my soul,
Since all activity in work on earth
Must rob me of my new clairvoyant powers.
Maria:
Whoe'er is suffered to tread spirit-ways
Finds many a hint to shape his destiny.
On soul paths he will try to follow them,
Yet they have not been rightly understood
If they disturb his duties on the earth.
(Capesius sits, and is plunged in thought while the vision of Lucifer appears to Maria.)
Lucifer:
Thine effort will not bring thee much reward,
New force begins to stir within his heart
That opes the portal of his soul to me.
Maria, gaze with thy clairvoyant sight
Upon his inmost soul; and there behold
How he doth free himself on spirit-wings
From thy warm loving bonds of work on earth.
(Lucifer remains on the scene.)
(Maria turns towards Capesius to rouse him from his meditation, but at the same moment he seems to rouse himself of his own accord.)
Maria:
If on the spirit-path Johannes felt
The nature of his duties hinder him,
'Twould not be right, but 'twould be natural.
For he must work upon the outer plane.
Thy task is to expound the spirit-lore
To other men and such a task as this
Cannot impede the progress of thy soul.
Capesius:
Far more than when they work on outer things
Do spirit forces lose themselves in words.
Words make one reason o'er what one has seen,
And reason is a foe to seership's power.
I had a spirit-vision even now
Which only could disclose itself to me
Because the soul which was revealed to me,—
Although our earthly bodies are close friends,—
Had never been by me quite understood.
If I saw truly, I am no more bound
By any ties unto this work of earth.
For I must feel persuaded that high Powers
Now set another goal before my soul
Than that prescribed for it by Hilary.
(He places himself in front of Johannes.)
Johannes, tell me truly, didst thou not
A while ago feel old, outlived desires
That lived within thee like thy present self,
While thou wast lost in meditation deep?
Johannes:
Can then my spirit's struggle work to form
Experience within another's soul?
And can such vision make mine error strong
To find its way to life in cosmic space?
(Johannes again falls into meditation.)
(Maria turns her face towards Lucifer and hears him say:)
Lucifer:
Here too I find the soul's gate open wide.
I'll not delay but use this chance at once.
If also in this soul a spirit-wish
Is born, that work of love must come to naught
Which doth bode ill to me through Hilary.
I can destroy Maria's might in him:
And thus can add her power unto mine own.
(Capesius at this moment straightens up self-consciously, and, during the following speech, shows an increasingly definite conviction.)
Capesius:
My doubts dissolve: that which I saw was true;
I was allowed to see Johannes' life.
So is it also clear that his world could
Only unfold itself because mine own
Ne'er sought to draw near his with Reason's power.
The spirit-path hath need of solitude,
Co-operation is but meant for those
Who reasoning, can each other understand.
For from such intercourse the soul attains
The wide dominions of the worlds of light.
Example in old Felix can I find;
He seeks on paths that none but he may know
In proud seclusion for the spirit-light.
He sought and found because he kept himself
From ever grasping things by reason's strength.
In his track will I follow, and thy work,
Which hampers seership's power with earthly things,
Shall no more lead Capesius astray.
(Exit.)
Maria:
So 'tis with man, what time his better self
Sinks into spirit-sleep and strong desire
Is all his being's food until again
True spirit-nature wakes in glowing light.
Such is the sleep all human beings sleep
Before clairvoyant powers have wakened them.
They know not they are sleeping, though awake
They seem awake, because they ever sleep.
And seers do sleep, when they would fain awake
By hast'ning forth from their true spheres of life.
Capesius will now withdraw from us.
It is no transient whim; his mental life
Draws him away from us and from our plans.
It is not he that turns himself from us;
The dread decree of fate is plainly seen.
And so we who are left must consecrate
Our powers with more devotion to our work.
Johannes:
Maria, do not of Johannes ask
That for new aims at such a time as this
He should gird up his soul, who like that other,
Needs spirit-sleep in which he may mature
The forces which are germinating there.
I know that I in time to come shall dare
To work for spirit-worlds—but do not now
Appeal to me for services—not now.
Think how I drove away Capesius ...
Were I ripe for this work—he would be, too.
Maria:
Capesius away? Dost thou not—dream?
Johannes:
I dreamed while conscious, ... yea, I woke in dreams.
What would seem fantasy to cosmic powers
To me proved symbol of my present state.
Right well I know my wish was my true self;
My thinking only was another self.
And so Johannes stood before my soul
As once he was, ere spirit seized on him
And filled his being with a second self.
He is not dead; ... Johannes' living wish
Createth him companion of my soul.
I may have stunned him, but not overthrown.
A living man, he claims his natural rights
Whene'er that other self must sink to sleep.
And always to awake—exceeds its powers.
It was asleep throughout the time in which
Capesius could experience in himself
How my first nature tore me from myself.
My dreams did seem to him the sign of fate
And so in me and not in him doth work
The power which drove him forth, and which forbids
Our spirit to be turned to work on earth.
Maria:
The spirit-powers are coming—call on them.
To cosmic spirit-sources turn thy gaze
And wait until the powers within those depths
Discover that within thine own true self
Which stirs with conscious life akin to theirs.
Their magic words will show thine inward sight
That which makes them and thee an unity.
Cast out thine own brain's interfering speech,
That spirit may speak in thee as it wills;
And to this spirit-speech give thou due heed.
'Twill carry thee beyond the spheres of light
And link thee to true spirit-essence there.
Thy misty visions sprung from times long past
Will then grow sharp and clear in cosmic light,
But will not bind thee since thou hast control.
Compare them with these elemental forms,
With shadows and with phantoms of all kinds,
And place them near to demons manifold
And so discover what they really are.
But in the realm of spirits root thyself,
Who primal source to primal source do bind,
Who dwell close linked with dormant cosmic powers
And order the processions of the spheres.
This view of cosmic things will give thee strength,
Amid the surging sea of spirit-life,
To blend thyself and inmost soul in one.
The spirit bids me tell thee this myself;
But now give ear to what thou knowest well
Though 'tis not wedded yet to thy soul-depths.
Johannes (still sitting on a rock to right of stage. He collects himself for a determined effort):
I will give ear—I will defy myself.
(From both sides advance elemental spirits. From the right of stage creatures like gnomes. They have steel-blue-grey bodies, small as compared with men; they are nearly all head, but it is bent forward and downward, and is lilac and purple in color, with tendrils and gills of various shades of the same hue. Their limbs are long and mobile, suitable for gesticulation, but ill-adapted for walking. From the left of stage come sylph-like figures, slender and almost headless; their feet and hands are partly fins and partly wings. Some of them are bluish-green, others yellowish-red. The yellowish-red ones are distinguished by sharper outlines than the bluish green ones. The words spoken by these figures are accompanied by expressive gestures developing into a dance.)
Chorus of the Gnomes (dancing, hopping, and gesticulating in rhythm):
We harden, we strengthen (said sharply and quickly)
The nebulous earth-dust;
We loosen, we powder
Hard-crusted earth-boulders;
Swift shatter we the hard,
Slow harden we the loose.
Such is our spirit-kind.
Of mental matter formed
Full-skilled were we before
When human souls still slept (said slowly and dreamily)
And dreamed when earth began.
Chorus of the Sylphs (a swaying motion in rhythm):
We weave and we unweave
The web of watery air;
We scatter and divide
Seed forces from the sun;
Light-force condense with care;
Fruit-powers destroy with skill;
For such is our soul-kind
From rays of feeling poured,
Which ever-living glows
That mankind may enjoy
Earth-evolution's sense.
Chorus of the Gnomes (dancing, hopping, and gesticulating in rhythm):
We titter and we laugh (said sharply and quickly)
We banter and grimace,
When stumbling human sense
And fumbling human mind
Beholds what we have made;
They think they understand
When spirits from our age
Weave charms for their dull eyes (said slowly and emphatically).
Chorus of the Sylphs (a swaying motion in rhythm):
We take care, and we tend,
Bear fruit and in spirit,
When young mankind's dawn-life
And old mankind's errors
Consume what we have made
And childlike or greyhaired
Find in time's stream dull joy
From our eternal plans.
(These spirit-beings collect in two irregular groups in the background, and remain there visible. From the right appear the three soul forces: Philia, Astrid, and Luna with ‘the Other Philia.’)
Philia:
They ray out the light
As loving light-forms
To ripeness so blest,
So gently they warm
And mightily heat
Where embryo growth
Would reach actual life;
That this actual life,
May make souls rejoice
Who lovingly yield
To radiant light.
Astrid:
'Tis life that they weave,
And help to create,
In beings at birth;
They shatter the earth
And densify air;
That change may appear
In strenuous growth.
Such strenuous growth
Fills spirits with joy
Who feel that they weave
A life which creates.
Luna:
They thoughtfully mould,
Alert to create
In flexible stuff;
They sharpen the edge
And flatten the face,
And cunningly build
The clearly-cut forms;
That clearly-cut forms
The will may inspire
With cunning to build,
Alert to create.
The Other Philia:
They gather the blooms
And use without care
The magical works;
They dream of the true,
And the seeming protect;
That germs which lie hid
May wake into life.
And clairvoyant dreams
Make clear unto souls
The magical web
That forms their own life.
(These four soul forces disappear towards the left; Johannes, who during the preceding events was deep in meditation, rouses himself.)
Johannes:
‘And clairvoyant dreams
Make clear unto souls
The magical web
That forms their own life.’
These are the words that still distinctly ring
Within my soul; that which I saw before
Passed in confusion out of my soul's ken.
Yet what a power stirs in me, when I think;
‘The magical web
That forms their own life.’
(He relapses once more into meditation; there appears to him as a thought form of his own a group composed of: The Spirit of Johannes' youth, with Lucifer on its right and Theodora's soul on its left.)
The Spirit of Johannes' youth:
The life within thy wishes feeds my life,
My breath drinks thirstily thy youthful dreams;
I am alive when thou dost not desire
To force thy way to worlds I cannot find.
If in thyself thou losest me, I must
Do grievous painful service to grim shades:—
O guardian of my life ... forsake me not.
Lucifer:
He never will forsake thee,—I behold
Deep in his nature longings after light
Which cannot follow in Maria's steps.
And when the radiance which is born of them
Doth fully light Johannes' artist-soul
It must bear fruit; nor will he be content
To cast this fruit away in yonder realm
Where love divorced from beauty reigns alone.
His self will no more seem of worth to him
Which fain would cast his best gifts to the shades,
Because it sets by knowledge too much store.
When wisdom shall throw light on his desires
Their glorious worth will be revealed to him;
He only can think them of little worth
So long as they hide darkly in the soul.
Until they can attain to wisdom's light
I will be thy protector—through the light
I find deep-seated in the human soul.
He has as yet no pity for thy woes,
And ever lets thee sink among the shades
When he is striving up the heights of light.
For then he can forget that thou, his child,
Must lead a miserable phantom life.
But henceforth, thou wilt find me at thy side
When as a shade thou freezest through his fault.
I will exert my rights as Lucifer
(At the word ‘Lucifer’ the Spirit of Johannes' youth starts.)
Reserved to me by ancient cosmic law,
And occupy those depths within his soul
He leaves unguarded in his spirit-flight.
I'll bring thee treasure that will light for thee
The dark seclusion of the shadow-realms.
But thou wilt not be fully freed till he
Can once again unite himself with thee.
This act he can delay ... but not prevent.
For Lucifer will well protect his rights.
Theodora:
Thou spirit-child, thou liv'st Johannes' youth
In gloomy shadow-realms. To thee in love
Bends down the soul which o'er Johannes broods
From realms ablaze with light, aglow with love.
She will from thine enchantment set thee free
If thou wilt take so much of what she feels
As shall procure thee life in blessedness.
I will ally thee with the elements
Which labour unaware in cosmic space
And ne'er descend to wakefulness of soul.
With those earth-spirits thou canst fashion forms,
And with the fire-souls thou canst ray out power,
If thou wilt sacrifice thy conscious life
Unto the Will that works with light and power
But without human wisdom. So shalt thou
Preserve thy knowledge,` only half thine own,
From Lucifer, and to Johannes give
The services which are of worth to him.
From his soul's being I will bring to him
What causeth him to crave thy being's aid,
And find refreshment in the spirit-sleep.
Lucifer:
But beauty she can ne'er bestow on thee
Since I myself dare take it far from her.
Theodora:
From noble feeling I will find the germ
Of beauty which grows ripe through sacrifice.
Lucifer:
From free-will she will tear thee and instead
Give thee to spirits dwelling in the dark.
Theodora:
I shall awaken sight by spirit filled
That e'en from Lucifer free knows itself.
(Lucifer, Theodora, and the Spirit of " Johannes' youth disappear. Johannes, awaking from his meditation, sees ` the Other Philia approaching him,)
The Other Philia:
And clairvoyant dreams
Make clear unto souls
The magical web
That forms their own life.
Johannes:
Thou riddle-speaking spirit—at thy words
This world I entered! Of its mysteries.
One only-is important for my soul:
Whether, as living in the spirit worlds,
The shadow dwells who sought with Lucifer
And Theodora to be shown to me.
The Other Philia:
He lives—lives as a semblance waked by thee.
E'en as a glass in pictures loth reflect
All things by light upon its surface thrown
So must whate'er in spirit-realms thou see'st—
Ere full maturity gives thee the right
To such clairvoyance—mirrored be in life
Within the realm of half-waked spirit-shades.
Johannes:
'Tis but a picture, mirrored thus by me?
The Other Philia:
Yet one that lives and keeps its hold on life
So long as thou dost keep within thyself
An outlived self which thou indeed canst stun
But which as yet thou canst not overthrow.
Johannes, thine awakening is but false
Until thou shalt thyself set free the shade
Whom thine offence doth grant a life bewitched.
Johannes:
What thanks I owe this spirit, who brings truth
Into my soul.—I needs must follow her.
Curtain falls slowly, while ‘the Other Philia’ and Johannes remain quietly standing

Johannes:
Der hingetürmten Formen schweigsam Sein,
es füllt den Raum, gestaltend weite Rätsel;
es tötet nicht mit Fragepein die Seele,
die nicht erkennen, die nur lebend selig
des Daseins Offenbarung schauen will.
Um diese Felsen dieses Lichtesweben,
der kahlen Flächen stummes Dasein dort,
die Wälder, grün in blau verdämmernd hier;
dies ist die Welt, in der Johannes’ Seele
sich Zukunftbilder webend, weilen will.

Johannes’ Seele soll in sich erfühlen
die Tiefen und die Weiten dieser Welt.
Und Schöpfermächte sollen dieser Seele
die Kraft entbinden, die den Weltenzauber
als kunst-verklärten Schein den Herzen kündet.
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
Doch nie vermöcht’ Johannes dies, wenn nicht
Maria seiner Seele Kräfte liebend
durch ihre milde Seelenwärme weckte.
Des Schicksals weise Führung muß ich preisen,
das diesem Menschen mich so nah gebracht.
Wie kurz ist doch die Zeit erst, seit ich sie
an meiner Seite weiß; wie innig banden
die wenig Wochen meiner Seele
mir ihrer Seele schon zur Lebenseinheit.
Sie lebt als Geist in mir, auch wenn sie fern;
Sie denkt in meinem Denken, wenn ich mir
des Wollen Ziele vor die Seele rufe.
(Maria erscheint wie ein Gedanke des Johannes.)
Johannes (fortfahrend):
Maria hier vor mir? Und wie ist sie ‒ ?
Sie darf nicht so vor mir sich offenbaren;
dies geistig strenge Antlitz – diese Würde,
die irdisch Fühlen frösteln macht – es will –
es kann – Johannes so Maria nicht
in seiner Nahe schauen – dies kann nicht
Maria sein, die weise Mächte mir
in milder Schicksalsfügung zugeführt.
(Maria verschwindet aus Johannes’ Schauen.)
Wo ist Maria, die Johannes liebte,
als sie noch nicht die Seele ihm verwandelt
und sie in kalte Geisteshöhn geführt?
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
Doch auch Johannes, der Maria liebte,
wo ist er jetzt ‒ ? er war noch eben hier ‒.
Ich schau nicht mehr Johannes, der mich mir
so selig wiedergab – es kann, es soll
mir nicht Vergangenheit ihn grausam rauben!
(Maria wird für Johannes’ Schauen wieder sichtbar.)
Maria:
Maria, so wie du sie schauen willst,
ist sie in Welten nicht, wo Wahrheit leuchtet.
In Truges Reichen webt Johannes’ Geist
vom Seelenwahn verführt; – befreie dich
von Wunschesmächten, welche dich verlocken.
Ich fühle deinen Seelensturm in mir;
er raubt die Ruhe mir, der ich bedarf.
Es ist Johannes nicht, der solchen Sturm
in meine Seele lenkt, ein Wesen ist’s,
das er in sich vor Zeiten schon besiegt.
Als Wahn durcheilt es jetzt die Geistesweiten ‒;
erkenn’ es, und es wird als Nichts verstieben.
Johannes:
Das ist Maria, wie sie wahrhaft ist,
und von Johannes redet sie, wie er
in dieser Zeit auch wirklich sich erscheint.
Der hat sich längst zu anderm Sein erhoben,
als mir des Traumes Gaukelspiel jetzt malt,
weil ich in träger Ruhe meine Seele
in sich behaglich dämmern lassen will.
Doch noch besitzt dies Sein mein Wesen nicht.
Ich kann ihm noch entfliehn – und will es jetzt. ‒

Du fremdes Wesen in Johannes’ Seele

(Benedictus erscheint an Marias Seite; ebenfalls als Gedanke des Johannes.)
Benedictus:
Johannes, höre deiner Seele Mahnung;
Der Mensch, der geistig dich erfüllend, dir
als deines Wesens Urgewalt erstanden,
er muß an deiner Seite treulich walten,
und von dir fordern, deines Wesens Kräfte
in deinem Wollen menschlich zu erschaffen.
Er muß verborgen in dir selber wirken,
daß du einst werden magst, was du als Ziel
des eignen Wesens fern in Zukunft weißt.
Du sollst die eignen Sorgen fest verschlossen
im Seelen-Innern mit durchs Leben tragen.
Du selbst gewinnst dich nur, wenn du von ihm
dich mutig willst stets mehr besitzen lassen.
Maria (als Gedanke von Johannes geschaut):
Mein heilig ernst Gelöbnis strahlet Kraft,
der dir erhalten soll, was du errungen.
Du findest mich in kalten Eisgefilden,
wo Geister sich das Licht erschaffen müssen,
wenn Finsternisse Lebenskräfte lähmen. ‒ ‒ ‒
In Weltengründen suche mich, wo Seelen
das Götterfühlen sich erkämpfen müssen
durch Siege, die vom Nichts das Sein ertrotzen.
Doch nimmer suche mich im Schattenreich,
wo abgelebtes Seelenleben sich
aus Wahneswesen flüchtig Sein erlistet
und Traumesgaukelspiel den Geist umspinnt,
weil er genießend sich vergessen will,
und Ernst ihm unbehaglich scheinen kann.
(Benedictus und Maria verschwinden.)
Johannes:
Sie spricht von Wahn ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ doch schön ist dieser Wahn.
Er lebt; Johannes fühlt in ihm sich selbst,
er fühlt Marias Nähe auch in ihm. ‒
Johannes will nicht wissen, wie der Geist
in dunklen Seelentiefen Rätsel löst.
Doch schaffen will er, will als Künstler wirken.
So bleibe ihm verborgen, was in ihm
bewußt nur Weltenhöhen schauen möchte.

(Capesius erhebt sich von seinem Sitze; rüttelt sich wie aus tiefem Sinnen auf.)
Capesius:
Erlebt’ ich nicht in eigner Seele klar,
was in Johannes, der so träumend sinnt,
als Bilder seiner Sehnsucht sich erschafft?
Gedanken flammten mir im Innern auf,
die nicht aus mir; – ‒ die er nur wirken konnte.
Es lebte seiner Seele Sein in meiner. – –
Verjüngt erblickt’ ich ihn, wie er sich selbst
durch Geisteswahn erschaut, und frevelhaft
die reifen Früchte seines Geistes schalt. – ‒

Doch wie ! – warum erlebe ich dies jetzt?
Nur selten darf der Geistesforscher doch
Der andern Seelen Sein in sich erschauen! –

Ich konnte oft von Benedictus hören,
daß dies nur der vermag – für kurze Zeit, –
der gnädig ausersehn vom Schicksal ist,
um eine Stufe auf dem Geistespfad
erhöht zu werden. – ‒ Darf ich so mir deuten,
was mich in diesem Augenblicke trifft?
Was selten – wahrlich nur geschehen darf;
denn furchtbar wär’s, könnt’ jederzeit der Seher
belauschen andrer Seelen Innensein.

von anderm Seelensein mich träumen ließ?
Ich muß es von Johannes selbst erfahren.
(Capesius nähert sich Johannes und wird jetzt von diesem bemerkt.)
Johannes:
Capesius – ich dacht’ Euch fern von hier!
Capesius:
Doch meine Seele fühlte sich Euch nahe.
Johannes:
Mir nah – in diesem Augenblick – doch nicht!
Capesius:
Warum doch schaudert Euch bei diesem Wort?
Johannes:
O nein, mir schaudert nicht – ‒ ‒
(In diesem Augenblick tritt Maria hinzu; dieses macht möglich, daß sowohl Johannes seine nächsten Worte, wie auch Capesius die seinigen, für sich sprechen können.)
Johannes (für sich):
– ‒ ‒ sein Blick, er trifft
in meiner Seelen Tiefen wahrhaft mich.
Capesius (für sich):
Sein Schaudern zeigt mir, daß ich wahr geschaut.
(Capesius wendet sich nun an Maria.)
Maria, Ihr erscheint zur rechten Zeit.
Es bringt vielleicht mir Euer Wort die Lösung
des ernsten Rätsels, das mich schwer bedrückt!
Maria:
Nicht Euch – ich dacht’ Johannes hier zu finden.
Die Ahnung ließ des Rätsels Last bei ihm
mich suchen; ‒ Euch jedoch wähnt’ ich befriedigt,
dem schönen Wirkensziele hingegeben,
das uns Hilarius erschließen will.
Capesius:
Dies Ziel – was soll es mir – es stört mich jetzt. –
Maria:
Es stört Euch? – zeigtet Ihr Euch nicht beglückt,
seit eurem Hoffen solcher Inhalt ward?
Capesius:
Was ich erlebt in dieser Schicksalsstunde,
es ändert meiner Seele Richtung ganz.
Es müßte jede Erdenwirksamkeit
erwachter Seherkräfte mich berauben.
Maria:
Wer Geistespfade hat beschreiten dürfen,
erlebt so mancher Schicksalszeichen Winke. –
Es wird auf Seelenwegen ihnen folgen,
doch könnten sie nicht recht gedeutet sein,
wenn sie die wahren Erdenpflichten stören.
(Capesius setzt sich: verfällt in tiefes Sinnen,
währenddessen Maria die Erscheinung Lucifers hat.)
Lucifer:
Dein Mühen wird dir wenig Früchte bringen.
In seinem Herzen regen Kräfte sich,
die mir die Tore seiner Seele öffnen.
Maria, – richte deine Seherkraft
In seiner Seele Tiefen; – schaue dort,
wie er mit Geistesschwingen sich erlöst
von eurem liebewarmen Erdenwerke.
(Lucifer bleibt in der Landschaft.)
(Maria wendet sich etwas deutlicher zu Capesius, ihn aus seinem Sinnen zu erwecken, aus dem er aber zugleich auch wie von selbst sich rüttelt):
Maria:
Wenn sich Johannes auf dem Geistespfade
gestört durch seiner Pflichten Art erfühlte,
berechtigt wär es nicht, – doch schien’s begreiflich:
er wird im äußern Dienste schaffen müssen.
Doch Ihr sollt Geisteswissen Andern künden,
und tretet so aus Eurem Seelenkreise nicht.
Capesius:
Weit mehr, als wenn sie äußre Werke schafft,
verliert die Geisteskraft im Worte sich.
Es zwingt das Wort Geschautes zu begreifen,
doch sind Begriffe Seherkräften feindlich.
Ein solches Geisterlebnis durft’ ich schauen,
das meinem Blicke sich nur zeigen konnte,
weil jene Seele, die sich mir erschloß,
zwar meinem Erdenmenschen nahe steht,
doch nie von diesem ganz begriffen ward. –
Ist mein Erlebnis wahr, so wird mich nichts
an dieses Erdenwerk jetzt binden können.
Denn fühlen muß ich dann, wie hohe Mächte
Jetzt andre Ziele meiner Seele weisen,
als sie Hilarius ihr vorgezeichnet. –
(Er stellt sich vor Johannes hin.)
Capesius:
Johannes, sagt mir frei, erfühltet Ihr
vorhin nicht abgelebte Seelenwünsche
wie Euer gegenwärtig Selbst in Euch,
als Ihr in Sinnen ganz verloren war’t?
Johannes:
So kann sich meines Geistes Wirrnis wirksam
In fremder Seele als Erlebnis schaffen?
Und Schauen macht den Irrtum stark, daß er
den Weg ins Weltenwerden finden kann?
(Johannes verfällt wieder in ein Sinnen.)
(Maria wendet den Blick zu Lucifer und hört ihn sprechen):
Lucifer:
Auch hier find ich die Seelentore offen.
Nicht säumen will ich und die Lage nutzen,
Wenn auch in dieser Seele – Geisteswunsch
Sich schafft, so muß das Liebeswerk verfallen,
das mir durch Gottgetreu gefährlich winkt.
Ich kann in ihm Marias Macht zerstören;
dann fällt, was sie vermag, an meine Kraft.
( Capesius richtet sich in diesem Augenblicke selbstbewußt auf und gewinnt innerhalb der folgenden Worte immer sicherere Stimmung.)
Capesius:
Der Zweifel flieht – ich habe wahr geschaut;
Johannes lebte, was ich sehen durfte.
So ist auch klar, daß seine Welt sich mir
nur öffnen konnte, weil die meine sich
begreifend nie der seinen nahen wollte.
Der Geistesweg verlangt nach Einsamkeit; –
zusammenwirken können Menschen nur,
die sich begreifend gegenüberstehen.
Von Menschenwesen fern erreicht die Seele,
der Lichteswelten weite Daseinskreise.

Als Vorbild zeigt sich Vater Felix mir,
er sucht auf Wegen, die den Andern fremd,
in stolzer Einsamkeit das Geisteslicht.
Und seinem Suchen ward Erfolg, – weil er
begreiflich Wesen sich stets ferne hielt.
Ihm streb ich ferner nach: und euer Werk,
das Seherkraft mit Erdensein belastet,
es wird Capesius nicht mehr verführen.
(Er geht fort.)
Maria:
So ist’s mit Menschen, wenn das bessre Selbst
in Geistesschlaf versinkt, und Wunschesmächte
sein Wesen nähren, bis Erwachen wieder
mit Licht erhellt die wahre Geistnatur.
So ist der Schlaf, den alle Menschen schlafen,
bevor die Seherkräfte sie geweckt.
Sie wissen nichts von diesem wachend Schlafen;
sie scheinen wachend – weil sie immer schlafen.
Der Seher schläft, wenn er zu diesem Wachen
aus seinem wahren Sein heraus sich drängt. –
Capesius wird uns sich jetzt entziehn.
Es zieht nicht flüchtig Wollen nur; es zieht
Sein Zustand ihn von unsern Zielen ab.
Nicht er bewirkt, daß er von uns sich wendet.
Man sieht der Schicksalsmächte strenge Zeichen.
So müssen wohl wir andren unsre Kräfte
in höhrem Maße unserm Werke widmen.
Johannes:
Maria, fordre von Johannes nicht,
daß er in dieser Zeit zu neuen Zielen
die Seele rüste, welche gleich der andern
des Geistesschlafs bedarf, daß sie die Kräfte,
die keimenden, zur Reife pflegen kann.
Ich weiß, ich werde einst für Geisteswelten
zu wirken mich erkühnen, – doch nicht jetzt
verlange, daß ich tätig sei – nicht jetzt –.
Bedenk’, daß ich Capesius vertrieb. – ‒ ‒
Wär ich zum Werke reif – er wär’ es auch.
Maria:
Capesius vertrieben? – Du – du träumst.
Johannes:
Ich träumte wissend ... ja, ich wachte träumend.
Was Schein vor Weltenmächten, – hat vor mir
als Sinnbild meiner Reife sich bezeugt.
Ich weiß recht gut, mein Wünschen war ich selbst;
und nur das Denken war ein andres Selbst.
So stand Johannes vor der Seele mir,
wie er einst war, bevor der Geist ihn faßte
und ihn erfüllte mit dem zweiten Selbst.
Er ist nicht tot; Johannes’ – ‒ ‒ Wunschesleben,
Es schafft ihn zum Genossen meiner Seele.
Ich hab ihn wohl betäubt, doch nicht besiegt.
Des eignen Daseins Rechte fordert er,
wenn jenes Selbst – ‒ ‒ in Schlaf versinken muß.
Und immer wachen – das vermag es nicht.
So schlief es auch zu jener Zeit, in der
Capesius in sich erleben konnte,
wie mich der andre aus mir selbst gerissen.
So ward mein Träumen ihm zum Schicksalswink.
So wirkt in mir und nicht in ihm die Kraft,
die ihn vertrieben hat, – die uns verbietet,
den Geist zum Erdenwirken hin zu lenken.
Maria:
Die Geisteskräfte kommen – rufe sie. –
In Geistesweltengründen lenk’ den Blick,
und warte, bis die Kräfte in den Tiefen
empfinden, was in deinem eignen Selbst
mit ihrem Wesen wahlverwandt sich regt.
Sie zaubern dir vor deine Seheraugen,
was sie und dich zur Einheit werden läßt.
Verbanne eignen Sinnes störend Sprechen,
so spricht der Geist in dir mit Geisteswesen;
und diesem Geistersprechen höre zu.
Es trägt dich zu den Lichtessphären hin,
und bindet dich an Geisteswesenheit.
Was dir aus abgelebten Zeiten dämmert,
erscheint dir dann im Weltenlichte deutlich;
und zwingt dich nicht, weil du es lenken kannst.
Vergleich’ es mit der Elemente Wesen,
mit Schatten und mit Schemen aller Art,
und stell’ es neben mancherlei Dämonen,
und so erfahre, was es wirklich gilt.
Doch dich ergründe in der Geister Reich,
die Urbeginn verbinden anderm Urbeginn,
und Weltenkeimeskräfte nah sich wissen
und Sphärenzielgedanken Richtung weisen.
Es wird dich solche Weltenschau erkraften,
daß du im Geistgewoge dir das Sein
im Seelenkerne wesenhaft vereinst.

So heißt der Geist mich selber dir zu künden;
nun höre jetzt, was dir bewußt, doch nicht
vermählt bisher in Seelentiefen ist.
Johannes (deutlich zeigend, daß er zu starkem Entschluß sich aufrafft):
Ich will es hören, – will mir selber trotzen.
(Von beiden Seiten kommen Elementargeister. Von links gnomenartige Wesen. Sie haben stahlgraue, den Menschen gegenüber kleine Gestalten; sie sind fast ganz Kopf, doch ist dieser vorn übergebeugt. Sie haben lange, bewegliche, zu Geberden geeignete, zum Gehen ungeschickte Gliedmaßen. Von rechts kommen sylphenartige, schlanke, fast kopflose Gestalten; ihre Füße und Hände sind ein Mittelding zwischen Flosse und Flügel; ein Teil von ihnen ist blaugrün, der andere Teil ist gelbrötlich. Bei den gelbrötlichen ist die Gestalt mir schärferen Konturen begabt; bei den blaugrünen unbestimmter. Die Worte, welche diese Gestalten sprechen, werden mit ausdrucksvollen, bis zum Tanze sich gestaltenden Geberden vorgebracht.)
Gnomengeisterchor:
Wir härten, wir kraften
das Stoffesstaubgeflimmer,
wir lockern, wir pulvern
erstarrtes Krustengeschiebe;
wir stäuben flink das Feste
und festen langsam Lockres
mit unsern Leibesgeistern,
gewoben aus Verstandesstoff,
der klug schon vollends war,
als Menschenseelen schlafend
in Erdenurbeginnen träumten.
Sylphengeisterchor:
Wir weben, wir fasern
das Wasserluftgewobe;
wir trennen, wir sprengen
belebte Sonnensamenkräfte;
Wir dichten sorglich Lichtesmächte,
wir nichten weise Früchtekräfte
mit unsren Seelenleibern,
erfließend aus Empfindungsstrahlen,
die ewig lebend glimmern,
daß Menschenwesen lebend
des Erdenwerdens Sinn genießen.
Gnomengeisterchor:
Wir lachen, wir kichern,
wir spotten, wir grinsen,
wenn Menschensinne holpernd,
und Menschengeister stolpernd
von uns Erzeugtes schauen
und weise zu verstehen glauben,
was Geister unsrer Weltenzeiten
vor ihre dummen Augen zaubern.
Sylphengeisterchor:
Wir sorgen, wir pflegen,
wir fruchten, wir geistern,
wenn Menschenkinder lebendämmernd
und Menschengreise irrtumwebend
an unserm Werke zehren,
und kindlich oder greisenhaft
Im Zeitenstrome dumpf genießen,
was wir in Ewigkeiten sinnen.
(Diese Geisteswesen bewegen sich, wie in zwei Knäuel sich zusammenfindend, gegen den Hintergrund und bleiben dort sichtbar. Vor links erscheinen die drei Seelenkräfte; Philia, Astrid, Luna mit der »andren Philia«.)
Philia:
Sie strahlen die Helle
als liebende Lichte
in seliges Reifen,
sie wärmen gelinde
und hitzen gewaltig,
wie Werdendes will
zu wirkendem Sein;
daß wirkendes Sein
entzücke die Seelen,
die liebend sich geben
dem strahlenden Licht.
Astrid:
Sie weben das Leben
als schaffende Helfer
In quellende Wesen;
sie sprengen die Erden
und dichten die Lüfte,
daß Wandel sich zeige
im strebenden Schaffen;
daß strebendes Schaffen
beglücke die Geister,
die webend sich fühlen
im schaffenden Leben.
Luna:
Sie drücken bedächtig
als tätige Schöpfer
die bildsamen Stoffe;
sie schärfen die Kanten
und glätten die Flächen,
daß sinnvoll sich bauen
die ragenden Formen;
daß ragende Formen
begeistern den Willen
zu sinnvollem Bauen
als tätiger Schöpfer.
Die andre Philia:
Sie pflücken die Blüten
als sorglose Nutzer
in zauberndem Wirken;
sie träumen das Wahre,
sie wahren den Wahn;
daß schlafendes Keimen
sich wecke zum Leben;
und wachendes Träumen
enthülle den Seelen
verzaubertes Weben
des eigenen Wesens.
(Diese vier Seelenkräfte verschwinden nach der rechten Seite; Johannes, der während der vorhergehenden Vorgänge in tiefem Sinnen war, erhebt sich daraus.)
Johannes:
»Und wachendes Träumen
enthülle den Seelen
verzaubertes Weben
des eigenen Wesens.«
Das sind die Worte, die noch deutlich klingen
In meiner Seele –, was ich vorher schaute,
in Wirrnis zog es aus der Seele fort. – ‒
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
Doch welche Kraft erregt sich mir, wenn ich bedenke:
Verzaubertes Weben
des eigenen Wesens –
(Er verfällt wieder in Sinnen; es erscheint vor ihm als seine Gedankenform eine Gruppe, bestehend aus: dem Geist von Johannes’ Jugend, Lucifer links von diesem, Theodora’s Seele rechts.)
Der Geist von Johannes’ Jugend:
Es nähret deiner Wünsche Sein mein Leben,
mein Atem schlürfet deiner Jugend Träume;
ich bin im Sein, wenn du nicht dringen willst
in Welten, welche ich nicht finden kann.
Verlierst du mich in dir, muß ich in Schmerzen
den grausen Schatten schlimme Dienste leisten – ‒;
du Pfleger meines Seins, – ‒ ‒ verlaß mich nicht. –
Lucifer:
Er wird dich nicht verlassen, – ich erschaue
in seines Wesens Tiefen Lichtbegierden,
die nicht Marias Spuren folgen können. – ‒
Wenn diese mit dem Glanz, den sie erzeugen,
Johannes’ Schöpferseele voll erleuchten:
Wird er die Früchte, die sie zeugen müssen,
in jenem Reiche nicht vergeuden können,
wo Liebe ohne Schönheit herrschen will.
Ihm wird das Selbst dann nicht mehr wertvoll scheinen,
das seine besten Kräfte in den Schatten
durch Wissensüberschätzung werfen will.
Wenn Weisheit leuchten wird in seinen Wünschen,
wird ihm ihr Wert sich herrlich offenbaren;
er kann gering so lange nur sie schätzen,
als sie im Seelendunkel noch sich halten.
Bis sie das Weisheitslicht erreichen können,
will ich dich treulich pflegen – durch das Licht,
das ich in Menschenseelengründen finde.

Noch fehlt Erbarmen ihm für deine Leiden,
er läßt dich stets ins Schemenreich versinken,
wenn er in deine Lichteshöhen strebt.
Vergessen kann er dann, daß du, sein Kind ‒,
ein schmerzlich Zauberdasein führen mußt.
Doch künftig wirst du mich zur Seite haben,
wenn du als Schatten frierst durch seine Schuld.
Ich will mit jenem Recht, das Lucifer
(bei dem Worte »Lucifer« zuckt der Geist von Johannes’ Jugend zusammen.)
aus alter Welten Satzung sich bewahrt,
in seiner Seele Tiefen mir erbeuten,
was er im Geistesfluge unbehütet läßt.
Ich bring dir dann den Schatz, der dir erleichtert
des Schattenreiches finstre Einsamkeit.
Doch wirst du völlig erst entzaubert sein,
wenn er mit dir sich wieder einen kann.
Verschieben kann er dies, ‒ ‒ verhindern nicht.
Denn Lucifer will seine Rechte wahren.
Theodora:
Du Geisteskind, du lebst Johannes’ Jugend
in finstern Schattenreichen. – Liebend neigt
sich dir die Seele, die Johannes schützt,
aus lichterfüllten, liebewarmen Reichen.
Erlösen will sie dich aus Zauberkreisen,
wenn du von ihrem Fühlen nehmen willst,
was dir ein Sein in Seligkeit erwirbt.
Ich will den Elementen dich verbünden,
die unbewußt in Weltenweiten wirken,
und stets dem Seelenwachen sich entziehen.
Du kannst mit Erdengeistern Formen bilden,
und mit den Feuerseelen Kräfte strahlen,
wenn du dein wissend Sein dem Willen opferst,
der ohne Menschenweisheit lichtvoll kraftet.
Du wirst das Wissen, das nur halb dein eigen,
vor Lucifer bewahren, und Johannes
die Dienste leisten, die ihm wertvoll sind.
Ich will aus seinem Seelensein dir holen,
was ihn nach deinem Sein bedürftig macht,
und ihm den Geistesschlaf erfrischend reicht.
Lucifer:
Sie wird dir Schönheit niemals schenken können,
weil ich sie ihr zu nehmen mich erkühne.
Theodora:
Ich will aus edlem Fühlen Schönheit keimen –
Und an dem Opferdienste reifen lassen.
Lucifer:
Sie wird dem freien Wollen dich entreißen
und Geistern schenken, die im Finstern walten.
Theodora:
Ich werde geisterfülltes Schauen wecken,
das frei auch noch von Lucifer sich weiß.
(Es verschwinden Lucifer, Theodora und der Geist von Johannes’ Jugend. Johannes, aus seinem Sinnen erwachend, sieht die »andre Philia« an sich herankommen.)
Die andre Philia:
Und wachend Träumen
Enthüllet den Seelen
Verzaubertes Weben
Des eigenen Wesens.
Johannes:
Du rätselvoller Geist, ‒ durch deine Worte
betrat ich diese Welt! ‒ ‒ Von ihren Wundern
ist nur das Eine ‒ ‒ meiner Seele wichtig:

in dir bewahrst, das du betäuben zwar,
doch jetzt fürwahr noch nicht besiegen kannst. –
Johannes, dein Erwachen bleibt ein Wahn,
bis du den Schatten selbst erlösen wirst,
dem deine Schuld verzaubert Leben schafft.
Johannes:
Wie dank ich diesem Geist, der wahren Rat
in meine Seele bringt ‒ ‒ ich muß ihm folgen.
(Der Vorhang fällt langsam, während »die andre Philia« und Johannes in ruhiger Gebärde stehen bleiben.)

Johannes:
The silent existence of towering forms,
filling the space, creating vast mysteries;
it does not kill the soul with agonizing questions,
those who do not recognize, who only want to see
the revelation of existence while alive.
Around these rocks, this weaving of light,
the silent existence of the bare surfaces there,
the forests, green in blue twilight here;
this is the world in which Johannes' soul
wants to dwell, weaving images of the future.

Johannes' soul shall feel within itself
the depths and vastness of this world.
And creative powers shall release from this soul
the force that proclaims the magic of the world
as an art-transfigured radiance to the hearts.

But Johannes would never have been able to do this if
Maria had not lovingly awakened
the powers of his soul with her gentle warmth.
I must praise the wise guidance of fate,
which brought me so close to this person.
How short is the time since I have known her
by my side; how intimately
the few weeks of my soul
have already bound me to her soul as one life.
She lives as a spirit within me, even when she is far away;
She thinks in my thinking when I call
the goals of my will before my soul.
(Mary appears like a thought of John.)
John (continuing):
Mary here before me? And how is she?
She must not reveal herself to me like this;
this spiritually stern countenance—this dignity,
which makes earthly feelings shiver—it wants—
it can—John cannot see Mary like this
in his presence—this cannot be
be Mary, whom wise powers
have brought to me in a gentle twist of fate.
(Mary disappears from John's view.)
Where is Mary, whom John loved,
when she had not yet transformed his soul
and led her into cold spiritual heights?

But also Johannes, who loved Maria,
where is he now? He was just here a moment ago.
I no longer see Johannes, who gave me back
my bliss – it cannot, it must not
cruelly rob me of him in the past!
(Mary becomes visible again to John's gaze.)
Maria:
Mary, as you wish to see her,
is not in worlds where truth shines.
In the realm of deceit, John's spirit weaves
seduced by the delusion of the soul; – free yourself
from the powers of desire that tempt you.
I feel the storm of your soul within me;
it robs me of the peace I need.
It is not John who directs such a storm
into my soul, it is a being that he defeated within himself long ago.
It now rushes through the expanses of the mind as delusion;
recognize it, and it will vanish into nothingness.
Johannes:
This is Maria as she truly is,
and she speaks of Johannes as he
really appears at this time.
He has long since risen to another being,
as the dream's trickery now paints for me,
because I want to let my soul
dawdr in comfortable slumber in sluggish tranquility.
But this being does not yet possess my essence.
I can still escape it – and I want to now. ‒
It often calls me to it, wanting to win me over completely
with its powers—
but it drives me to free myself from it.
For years now, it has filled the depths of my soul
with its spirit;
and yet—I do not want to know it within me now.

You strange being in John's soul
leave me, ‒ give me back to myself as I once was,
when you were not yet effective in me.
I want to see Johannes without you. ‒
(Benedictus appears at Mary's side; also as Johannes' thought.)
Benedictus:
John, listen to your soul's admonition;
The man who fills you spiritually, who arose
as the primal force of your being,
must rule faithfully at your side,
and demand of you that you create the powers of your being
in your human will.
He must work hidden within yourself,
so that you may one day become what you know as the goal
of your own being far in the future.
You shall carry your own worries firmly locked away
in the depths of your soul through life.
You yourself will only gain if you
courageously allow him to possess you more and more.
Maria (as seen in Johannes's mind):
My holy, solemn vow radiates power,
which shall preserve for you what you have achieved.
You will find me in cold, icy fields,
where spirits must create light for themselves,
when darkness paralyzes the forces of life. ‒ ‒ ‒
Seek me in the depths of the world, where souls
must fight for the feeling of the gods
through victories that defy existence from nothingness.
But never seek me in the shadow realm,
where lifeless souls
deceive themselves with fleeting existence
and dreamlike illusions entangle the spirit,
because it wants to forget itself in pleasure,
and seriousness can seem uncomfortable to it.
Benedictus and Maria disappear.)
Johannes:
She speaks of delusion ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ but this delusion is beautiful.
It lives; Johannes feels himself in it,
he feels Maria's closeness in it too. ‒
Johannes does not want to know how the spirit
solves mysteries in the dark depths of the soul.
But he wants to create, wants to work as an artist.
So let what is in him remain hidden,
only wants to consciously see the heights of the world.

Capesius:
Did I not experience clearly in my own soul
what Johannes, who ponders so dreamily,
creates as images of his longing?
Thoughts flared up inside me,
not from me; – ‒ which only he could effect.
His soul lived in mine. – –
Rejuvenated, I saw him as he saw himself
through delusion, and sacrilegiously
scolded the ripe fruits of his mind. – ‒

But how! – why am I experiencing this now?
Only rarely is the spiritual researcher allowed
to see the being of other souls within himself! –

I have often heard from Benedictus
that only those who are graciously chosen by fate
are able to do this – for a short time –
in order to be elevated one step on the spiritual path.

What rarely – truly only rarely – may happen;

for it would be terrible if the seer could
eavesdrop on the inner being of other souls at any time.

Johannes:
Capesius – I thought you were far away from here!
Capesius:
But my soul felt close to you.
Johannes:
Close to me – at this moment – no!
Capesius:
Why do you shudder at these words?
Johannes:
Oh no, I do not shudder – ‒ ‒
(At this moment, Mary enters; this allows both Johannes and Capesius to speak their next words for themselves.)
Johannes (to himself):
– ‒ ‒ his gaze, it truly touches
me in the depths of my soul.
Capesius (to himself):
His shuddering shows me that I have seen truly.
(Capesius now turns to Mary.)
Mary, you appear at the right time.
Perhaps your words will bring me the solution
to the serious riddle that weighs heavily on me!
Maria:
Not you—I thought I would find John here.
My intuition led me to seek the burden of the riddle with him
; ‒ but I thought you were satisfied,
devoted to the beautiful goal of our work,
which Hilarius wants to reveal to us.
Capesius:
This goal – what does it matter to me – it disturbs me now. –
Maria:
It disturbs you? – Did you not show yourself to be happy
since your hopes became reality?
Capesius:
What I have experienced in this hour of destiny
has completely changed the direction of my soul.
It would have to rob me of all earthly effectiveness
and awakened powers of vision.
Maria:
Those who have been allowed to walk the paths of the spirit
experience many signs of destiny. –
They will follow them on the paths of the soul,
but they cannot be interpreted correctly
if they interfere with true earthly duties.
(Capesius sits down: falls into deep thought, while Maria has a vision of Lucifer.)
Lucifer:
Your efforts will bear little fruit.
In his heart, forces are stirring,
which open the gates of his soul to me.
Mary, direct your vision
into the depths of his soul; look there
and see how, with the wings of his spirit, he redeems himself
from your loving earthly work.
(Lucifer remains in the landscape.)
(Mary turns a little more clearly to Capesius to awaken him from his thoughts, from which he, however, at the same time shakes himself as if by himself):
Maria:
If Johannes felt disturbed on the spiritual path
by the nature of his duties,
it would not be justified, but it seemed understandable:
he will have to work in external service.
But you should proclaim spiritual knowledge to others,
and thus do not step out of your soul circle.
Capesius:
Far more than when it creates external works,
the spiritual power is lost in words.
Words compel us to comprehend what we have seen,
but concepts are hostile to the powers of vision.
I was allowed to see such a spiritual experience,
which could only reveal itself to my gaze,
because that soul, which opened itself to me,
is close to my earthly human being,
but was never fully understood by him. –
If my experience is true, then nothing
can now bind me to this earthly work.
For then I must feel how high powers
Now point my soul to other goals
than those Hilarius set before it. –
(He stands in front of Johannes.)
Capesius:
Johannes, tell me freely, did you feel
unfulfilled desires of the soul
like your present self within you,
when you were completely lost in thought?
Johannes:
So the confusion of my mind can effectively
create an experience in a foreign soul?
And does seeing make the error strong, that it
can find its way into becoming worldly?
(John falls back into a trance.)
(Mary turns her gaze to Lucifer and hears him speak):
Lucifer:
Here, too, I find the gates of the soul open.
I will not delay and will take advantage of the situation,
Even if in this soul – the desire of the spirit
Creates itself, the work of love must fall,
Which beckons me dangerously through God's faithfulness.
I can destroy Mary's power in him;
then what she is capable of will fall to my power.
(At this moment, Capesius straightens up confidently and gains more and more assurance with each of the following words.)
Capesius:
Doubt flees – I have seen the truth;
John lived, as I was allowed to see.
So it is also clear that his world could only open up to me
because mine, understanding, never wanted to approach his.
The path of the spirit requires solitude; –
The path of the spirit demands solitude; –
only people who face each other with understanding can work together.
Far from human beings, the soul reaches
the wide circles of existence in the worlds of light.
Father Felix is a role model for me;
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
Father Felix is my role model,
he seeks paths that are foreign to others,
in proud solitude the light of the spirit.
And his search was successful, because he
always kept himself distant from comprehensible beings.
I continue to strive toward him: and your work,
which burdens clairvoyance with earthly existence,
will no longer seduce Capesius.
(He leaves.)
Maria:
This is how it is with people when the better self
sinks into spiritual sleep, and the powers of desire
nourish its being, until awakening once more
illuminates the true nature of the spirit with light.
Such is the sleep that all people sleep before the powers of vision awaken them.
They know nothing of this waking sleep;
they seem to be awake—because they are always asleep.
The seer sleeps when he pushes himself out of his true being into this waking state. –
Capesius will now withdraw from us.
It is not just a fleeting desire that draws him away; it is his condition that draws him away from our goals.
It is not he who causes him to turn away from us.
One sees the strict signs of the powers of fate.
It is not he who causes him to turn away from us.
One sees the stern signs of the powers of fate.
So we others must devote our energies
to our work to a greater extent.
Johannes:
Mary, do not demand of John
that he prepare his soul for new goals at this time,
which, like the other,
needs spiritual sleep so that it can nurture the forces,
the germinating ones, to maturity.
I know that I will one day dare to work for spiritual worlds,
but not now.
demand that I be active – not now.
Consider that I drove Capesius away. – ‒ ‒
If I were ready for the work, he would be too.
Maria:
Capesius driven away? – You – you are dreaming.
Johannes:
I dreamed knowingly ... yes, I woke dreaming.
What appears before the powers of the world – has proven itself to me
as a symbol of my maturity.
I know very well that my desires were my own;
and only my thoughts were another self.
So Johannes stood before my soul,
as he once was, before the spirit grasped him
and filled him with the second self.
He is not dead; Johannes' – ‒ ‒ life of desire,
It makes him a companion of my soul.
I may have numbed him, but I have not defeated him.
He demands the rights of his own existence,
when that self must sink into sleep.
And always awake – that is not possible.
So it slept even at that time when
Capesius could experience within himself
how the other tore me from myself.
Thus my dreams became a sign of fate for him.
Thus the power that drove him away – that forbids us
to direct the spirit toward earthly action – works in me and not in him.
Maria:
The powers of the spirit are coming – call them. –
Direct your gaze to the foundations of the spiritual world,
and wait until the powers in the depths
feel what stirs in your own self
and is kindred to their nature.
They conjure before your seer's eyes
what makes them and you become one.
Banish disturbing speech from your own mind,
so that the spirit within you speaks with spiritual beings;
and listen to this spiritual speech.
It carries you to the spheres of light,
and binds you to spiritual beings.
What dawns on you from times long past,
appears clearly to you in the light of the world;
and does not compel you, because you can guide it.
Compare it with the essence of the elements,
with shadows and with apparitions of all kinds,
and place it alongside various demons,
and thus learn what it really means.
But explore the realm of spirits,
which connect the beginning of time with the beginning of other times,
and know the forces of world creation close at hand
and the thoughts of the spheres pointing the way.
Such a view of the world will empower you,
that in the surge of spirit you will unite being
in the core of the soul.

John (clearly showing that he is gathering himself for a strong decision):
I want to hear it—I want to defy myself.
(Elemental spirits come from both sides. From the left, gnome-like beings. They have steel-gray, small figures compared to humans; they are almost entirely head, but this is bent forward. They have long, flexible limbs that are suitable for gestures but unsuitable for walking. From the right come sylph-like, slender, almost headless figures; their feet and hands are a cross between fins and wings; some of them are blue-green, others yellow-reddish. The yellow-reddish ones have sharper contours; the blue-green ones are more indistinct. The words spoken by these figures are accompanied by expressive gestures that resemble dancing.)
Chorus of gnome spirits:
We harden, we strengthen
the glittering dust of matter,
we loosen, we pulverize
frozen crusts;
we swiftly dust the solid
and slowly loosen the firm
with our body spirits,
woven from the fabric of understanding,
which was already completely wise,
as human souls sleeping
dreaming in the beginnings of the earth.
Sylph spirits' choir:
We weave, we fiber
the water-air fabric;
we separate, we sprinkle
animated sun seed powers;
We carefully compose powers of light,
we do not destroy wise fruit powers
with our soul bodies,
flowing from rays of sensation,
which glimmer eternally alive,
so that human beings alive
enjoy the meaning of becoming earth.
Chorus of gnome spirits:
We laugh, we giggle,
we mock, we grin,
when human senses stumble,
and human spirits stumble
as they look upon what we have created
and believe they understand wisely
what the spirits of our world ages
conjure before their foolish eyes.
Sylph Spirit Choir:
We care, we nurture,
we bear fruit, we haunt,
when human children dawdle through life
and human elders weave errors
and consume our work,
and childishly or senilely
enjoy themselves dully in the stream of time,
what we contemplate in eternities.
(These spirit beings move, coming together as if in two balls, against the background and remain visible there. On the left, the three soul forces appear: Philia, Astrid, Luna with the “other Philia”.)
Philia:
They radiate brightness
as loving lights
in blissful ripening,
they warm gently
and heat powerfully,
as that which is becoming wants
to become effective being;
that active being
delights the souls,
who lovingly give themselves
to the radiant light.
Astrid:
They weave life
as creative helpers
into springing beings;
they burst the earth
and condense the air,
that change may show itself
in striving creation;
that striving creation
may delight the spirits,
who feel themselves weaving
in creative life.
Luna:
They press deliberately
as active creators
the malleable materials;
they sharpen the edges
and smooth the surfaces,
so that the towering forms
are built meaningfully;
so that towering forms
inspire the will
to build meaningfully
as active creators.
The other Philia:
They pick the flowers
as carefree users
in enchanting work;
they dream the true,
they preserve the illusion;
that sleeping seeds
be awakened to life;
and waking dreams
reveal to souls
the enchanted weaving
of their own being.
(These four soul forces disappear to the right; John, who was deep in thought during the previous events, rises from it.)
Johannes:
“And waking dreams
reveal to souls
the enchanted weaving
of their own being.”
These are the words that still ring clearly
in my soul—what I saw before,
in confusion, it drew away from the soul. – ‒
‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒
But what power stirs within me when I consider:
Enchanted weaving
of one's own being –
(He falls back into his senses; a group appears before him as his thought form, consisting of: the spirit of Johannes' youth, Lucifer to his left, Theodora's soul to his right.)
The spirit of Johannes' youth:
His being nourishes your desires,
my breath sips your youthful dreams;
I am in being when you do not want to penetrate
into worlds that I cannot find.
If you lose me within yourself, I must in pain
to the grim shadow's evil service – ‒;
you, keeper of my being, – ‒ ‒ do not abandon me. –
Lucifer:
He will not abandon you, – I see
in the depths of his being a thirst for light,
which cannot follow Mary's footsteps. – ‒
When these, with the radiance they produce,
fully illuminate John's creative soul:
He will not be able to waste the fruits they must bear
in that realm where love without beauty wants to reign.
His self will then no longer seem valuable to him,
which wants to cast his best powers into the shadows
by overestimating knowledge.
When wisdom shines in his desires,
its value will be revealed to him in all its glory;
he can only value it as long as it remains in the darkness of his soul.

when he strives for your heights of light.
He can then forget that you, his child ‒,

But in the future you will have me by your side,
when you freeze as a shadow through his fault.
I will use the right that Lucifer
(at the word “Lucifer,” the spirit of John's youth flinches.)
preserved from ancient world statutes,
capture in the depths of his soul
what he leaves unguarded in the flight of his spirit.
I will then bring you the treasure that will ease
the dark loneliness of the shadow realm.
But you will only be completely disenchanted
when he can reunite with you.
He can postpone this, but cannot prevent it.
For Lucifer wants to preserve his rights.
Theodora:
You child of the spirit, you live Johannes' youth
in dark shadow realms. – Lovingly inclined
towards you is the soul that protects Johannes,
from light-filled, love-warmed realms.
It wants to redeem you from magical circles,
if you want to take from its feelings
what will earn you a life of bliss.
I want to unite you with the elements
that unconsciously work in worlds far away
and always elude the awakening of the soul.
You can form shapes with earth spirits,
and radiate powers with fire souls,
if you sacrifice your knowing being to the will,
which is full of light without human wisdom.
You will protect the knowledge that is only half yours
from Lucifer, and John
will perform the services that are valuable to him.
I will take from his soul what makes him need you,
and refresh him with the spirit's sleep.
Lucifer:
She will never be able to give you beauty,
because I dare to take it from her.
Theodora:
I will let beauty sprout from noble feeling –
And let it ripen in sacrificial service.
Lucifer:
She will snatch you away from free will
and give you to spirits who rule in darkness.
Theodora:
I will awaken spirit-filled vision,
which is still free even from Lucifer.
(Lucifer, Theodora, and the spirit of Johannes' youth disappear. Johannes, awakening from his reverie, sees the “other Philia” approaching him.)
The other Philia:
And waking dreams
Reveal to souls
The enchanted weaving
Of their own being.
Johannes:
You enigmatic spirit, ‒ through your words
I entered this world! ‒ ‒ Of its wonders
only one ‒ ‒ is important to my soul:
whether the shadow that wanted to reveal itself to me with Theodora
and Lucifer dwells alive and substantial in the realms of the spirit?
The other Philia:
He lives, ‒ he is awakened by you in appearance.
Just as everything is reflected in the mirror,
which allows light to shine on its surface,
so must what you see in the spirit realm,
before full maturity gives you the right
to such vision, ‒ be reflected alive
in the realm of half-awakened shadow spirits.
Johannes:
Is it only an image that is reflected through me?
The other Philia:
But an image that lives and remains alive
as long as you still preserve a dead existence
within you, which you may numb,
but cannot yet truly defeat. –
John, your awakening remains a delusion,
until you redeem the shadow itself,
which your guilt enchants into life.
Johannes:
How grateful I am to this spirit, which brings true counsel
into my soul—I must follow it.
