8. The Development of the Human Entity

[ 1 ] Um die Menschheitsentwicklung ganz verstehen zu können, ist es nötig, sie in verschiedener Beleuchtung zu sehen. Scheinbare Gegensätze lösen sich auf, wenn man tiefer darüber nachdenkt.

[ 1 ] To fully understand human evolution, it is necessary to view it from various perspectives. Apparent contradictions dissolve when one reflects on them more deeply.

[ 2 ] Wir sahen, wie sich der Körper durch die lemurische - die Feuerzeit — und die atlantische Zeit — als noch weite Nebel-Massen die Erde bedeckten — dem heutigen Zustand nähert. Wir sahen, wie eine Gruppe der Vorgeschrittenen nach Irland — nicht dem heutigen, sondern in dessen Nähe — wanderten. Diese Menschen entwickelten das logische Denken. Mit diesen Menschen war eine mächtige Veränderung vorgegangen. Früher ragte der Ätherleib des Menschen mächtig über den Kopf hinaus. Der Ätherleib ist der Architekt des Körpers, er baut die Organe auf. Er konnte ganz anders arbeiten, als er drinnen war statt draußen; dadurch wurde das Gehirn Instrument des Denkens. So wurde durch diese Veränderung das Gehirn zum Denkorgan, alles andere muss sich danach richten. Der Ätherleib musste erst den Kopf umbilden, dann sich selbst, um wieder zurückzuwirken. Es ist nötig, die Entwicklung des Menschen nach der Methode der Rosenkreuzer oder der Druiden zu verstehen; sie gliederten den Menschen in neun Teile.

[ 2 ] We saw how the body approached its present state through the Lemurian—the Age of Fire—and the Atlantean periods, when vast masses of mist still covered the Earth. We saw how a group of advanced beings migrated to Ireland—not the Ireland of today, but to a region near it. These people developed logical thinking. A powerful transformation had taken place within these people. Previously, the human etheric body extended far beyond the head. The etheric body is the architect of the physical body; it builds the organs. It could function quite differently when it was inside rather than outside; as a result, the brain became the instrument of thought. Thus, through this transformation, the brain became the organ of thought, and everything else must align with it. The etheric body first had to reshape the head, then itself, in order to exert its influence once more. It is necessary to understand human development according to the method of the Rosicrucians or the Druids; they divided the human being into nine parts.

[ 3 ] Erstens «Physischer Leib», zweitens «Ätherleib», als drittes Glied den ‹Empfindungsleib›, in welchem als viertes Glied die ‹Empfindungsseele› steckt, fünftens ‹Verstandesseele› oder ‹niederer Manas›, sechstens ‹Bewusstseinsseele›, siebtens ‹Geistselbst›, beides als ‹höherer Manas›, achtens ‹Lebensgeist-Budhi›, neuntens ‹Geistesmensch› oder ‹Atma›.

[ 3 ] First, the “physical body”; second, the “etheric body”; as the third member, the “sensory body,” within which lies the “sensory soul” as the fourth member; fifth, the “intellectual soul” or “lower Manas”; sixth, the “consciousness soul,” seventh, the “spirit-self,” both as “higher Manas,” eighth, the “life-spirit-Budhi,” and ninth, the “spirit-man” or “Atma.”

[ 4 ] Es war das wichtigste Ereignis in atlantischer Zeit für den physischen Leib, dass der Mensch in ihm denken lernte. Aufgabe unserer Zeit bis in die fernste Zukunft ist es, die anderen Teile danach zu richten, außer dem neunten Glied, welches in anderen Zyklen weiter entwickelt wird.

[ 4 ] The most important event in the Atlantean epoch for the physical body was that the human being learned to think within it. The task of our time, extending into the distant future, is to align the other parts accordingly, except for the ninth member, which will be further developed in other cycles.

[ 5 ] Wir sind jetzt in der fünften, der [germanisch-anglo-amerikanischen] Epoche angelangt. Nach der siebenten Epoche wird ein Ereignis stattfinden, wie die alte atlantische Flut. Der Geistesmensch wird dann in den Menschen rücken, wie der Ätherleib in den physischen Leib zur atlantischen Zeit. Im Indertum machte sich der weisheitsvolle Einfluss des Ätherkörpers geltend. [ 5 ] We have now reached the fifth, the [Germanic-Anglo-American] epoch. After the seventh epoch, an event will take place like the ancient Atlantean flood. The spiritual human will then enter into humanity, just as the etheric body entered the physical body in Atlantean times. In the Indian epoch, the wise influence of the etheric body made itself felt. Hence their longing to merge into Brahman, to immerse themselves in the heights of the music of the spheres. They lived with a constant awareness in the etheric body and had a great understanding of everything that transcends the earthly realm. They fulfilled the task of adapting the etheric body to culture.

[ 6 ] Die Perser bildeten den Empfindungsleib aus, das Verständnis, die äußere Welt zu empfinden und durch Arbeit zu überwinden. Bei ihnen kam Acker- und Weinbau in Flor. Der Leib schwelgt nicht mehr in inneren Gefühlen, er bringt die Muskelkraft in Anwendung. Die Empfindungsseele zu vervollkommnen war den Ägyptern vorbehalten. Ihre Mysterienschulen waren in hoher Blüte. Die HermesSchüler betrachteten den Himmel als Ozean der Sternenwelt, die Sterne waren ihnen Wesenheiten, beseelt von Sympathie und Antipathie. Verstand, Gemüt und Phantasie erweiterten sich bei den Griechen; Rechtswissenschaft begründeten die Römer.

[ 6 ] The Persians developed the feeling body, the ability to perceive the outer world and to overcome it through work. Agriculture and viticulture flourished among them. The body no longer revels in inner feelings; it puts muscular strength to use. Perfecting the soul of feeling was reserved for the Egyptians. Their mystery schools were in full bloom. The disciples of Hermes regarded the sky as an ocean of the starry world; to them, the stars were beings animated by sympathy and antipathy. Intellect, emotion, and imagination expanded among the Greeks; the Romans established jurisprudence.

[ 7 ] Die Völker wurden sich bewusst, dass der Verstand im einzelnen Menschen seinen Sieg feiert. Früher war der Zusammenhang der Staaten immer durch Priesterweisheit geleitet, so bildeten sich Hierarchien und Kasten. Das Geistesleben der alten Völker war anders geregelt als das unsrige, es war ein prophetisches. Aus solcher Quelle stammen die sibyllinischen Bücher, in welchen Ereignisse von tausend Jahren vorherbestimmt wurden. Die Eingeweihten sahen den Gang der Ereignisse voraus. So sehen wir die ägyptische Geschichte gelenkt durch göttliche Eingebung. Die Führer stellten einen Plan auf, sie sagten: Soll Heil werden, müssen wir die Geschicke nach dem Himmel lenken. Sie richteten sich nach den Entwicklungsgesetzen der Planetenbahnen und den göttlichen Zahlen. Wahre Schüler der großen Meister lenkten so weise die Ägypter durch sieben Zeiten. Es gab Priesterkult bis in die griechische Zeit. Indem der Mensch sich persönlich auf sich stellt, löst er sich ab von den göttlichen Offenbarungen. Das Auf-sich-selbst-Stellen wurde symbolisiert in der Schlange als Zeichen der Klugheit. Die Schlangen des Laokoon zeigen den Kampf der Priester mit der Schlange, den Kampf der vierten mit der dritten Epoche.

[ 7 ] The peoples became aware that intellect triumphs within the individual human being. Previously, the relations between states had always been guided by priestly wisdom, and thus hierarchies and castes were formed. The spiritual life of the ancient peoples was organized differently than ours; it was a prophetic one. From such a source come the Sibylline Books, in which events of a thousand years hence were foretold. The initiates foresaw the course of events. Thus we see Egyptian history guided by divine inspiration. The leaders drew up a plan; they said: If salvation is to come, we must direct the course of events according to the heavens. They guided themselves by the laws of development governing the planetary orbits and the divine numbers. True disciples of the great masters thus wisely guided the Egyptians through seven ages. There was a priestly cult right up to the Greek period. As man places himself at the center, he detaches himself from the divine revelations. This self-centeredness was symbolized by the serpent as a sign of cunning. The serpents of the Laocoön depict the struggle of the priests with the serpent, the struggle of the fourth epoch with the third.

[ 8 ] Für einen anderen Teil der Antike war das Pferd das Zeichen der Klugheit. Das Pferd ist ein zurückgebliebener Mensch. Es sonderte sich zuletzt aus der Entwicklung die Pferdenatur heraus. Wer die Welt mit feinerem Empfinden betrachtet, hat ein Verständnis für die Tatsache, wie manche Völker ihre Pferde lieben. Der Araber ist mit seinem Pferde verwachsen. Instinktiv fühlen die Menschen eine gewisse Dankbarkeit für dieses Tier. Was der Kentaur bedeutet, ist ein altes Geheimnis. Die Inder verehrten das Pferd sowie unsere nordischen Völker, und es [ist im Wappen von Niedersachsen].

[ 8 ] For another part of antiquity, the horse was the symbol of wisdom. The horse is a human being who has remained behind in evolution. The nature of the horse was the last to separate itself from the course of development. Those who view the world with a more refined sensibility understand why certain peoples love their horses so deeply. The Arab is inseparable from his horse. Instinctively, people feel a certain gratitude toward this animal. What the centaur signifies is an ancient mystery. The Indians revered the horse, as did our Nordic peoples, and it [appears in the coat of arms of Lower Saxony].

[ 9 ] In der Apokalypse wird Bezug auf das Pferd genommen. Odysseus verfertigt das hölzerne Pferd, um Trojas Fall herbeizuführen, wo sich die Priesterweisheit am längsten hielt.

[ 9 ] The Apocalypse refers to the horse. Odysseus constructed the wooden horse to bring about the fall of Troy, where priestly wisdom endured the longest.

[ 10 ] The Romans felt their descent from the priestly caste and depicted it ingeniously. Aeneas, son of Anchises, founded “Alba Longa,” meaning “Long Priestly Robe”; he established a colony for priests. He organized time according to the seven books of the Sibyl, and according to this division, the Roman kings were already predestined. This division relates the kings to the structure of the human being.

[ 17 ] Tarquinius Superbus: Geistesmensch. Er ist zweideutiger Natur, er strebt nach dem Erhabensten, was er nicht erhalten kann.

[ 17 ] Tarquinius Superbus: Spiritual Man. He is of an ambiguous nature; he strives for the most sublime, which he cannot attain.

[ 18 ] Der moderne Geist kennt nur das Profane, er kann nicht durchschauen, wie eine solche Aufstellung wie die von den römischen Königen möglich ist. Was haben sich die Geschichtsschreiber geplagt, den ‹Livius› zu erklären.

[ 18 ] The modern mind knows only the profane; it cannot comprehend how a list such as that of the Roman kings is possible. How hard the historians have struggled to explain “Livius.”

[ 19 ] Christus, der Gott, der die Menschen hinaufführt, ist nicht ein besonderer Angehöriger eines Volkes, er gehört allen Völkern an. Es ist der Mensch, der zu dem Menschen spricht.

[ 19 ] Christ, the God who leads humanity upward, is not a member of any particular people; he belongs to all peoples. It is man speaking to man.

[ 20 ] Es folgt unsere Zeitepoche, die germanisch-anglo-amerikanische. Das Christentum war zu hoch, um von den jungen Volksstämmen begriffen zu werden. Es fängt jetzt erst an, einzusickern. Unsere Zeit verliert sich zum Teil in die Außenwelt. Wer mit okkulten Augen betrachtet, würde den Übergang sehen, der das letzte Drittel des vorigen Jahrhunderts von früher absondert als die Morgenröte einer neuen Zeit. Was wurden vorher die Schüler mit trockenen Tatsachen geplagt. Es findet ein Umschwung statt in Physik, Geologie, Biologie und Naturwissenschaft. Vor zehn Jahren stellte der Chemiker Ostwald auf der Naturforscherversammlung in Wien an Stelle der Atomistik die Energetik, die Kraft. Der Geist wird an ihre Stelle treten. [...]

[ 20 ] Next comes our era, the Germanic-Anglo-American one. Christianity was too lofty to be grasped by the young tribes. It is only now beginning to take root. Our age is partly lost in the external world. Anyone observing with occult eyes would see the transition that separates the last third of the previous century from the past as the dawn of a new era. How the students were previously plagued with dry facts. A revolution is taking place in physics, geology, biology, and the natural sciences. Ten years ago, at the Congress of Natural Scientists in Vienna, the chemist Ostwald replaced atomism with energetics, with force. The spirit will take its place. [...]

[ 21 ] In der sechsten Periode wird das Manas oder Geistselbst in die Bewusstseinsseele hineinträufeln. Seit dem vierzehnten Jahrhundert sagten sich die Eingeweihten, dass sie mit der Wissenschaft zu rechnen haben, der Geistesforscher kennt alle Tatsachen derselben. Die Bewusstseinsseele hat das Bewusstsein der Atma-Wahrheiten, die real geworden sind. Der Geistesforscher weiß zum Beispiel, dass das Licht nicht durch objektive Schwingungen entsteht. Was der Zeit nottut, das ist das Einfließen des Geistselbst. Das strebt die Rosenkreuzerschulung an; sie half, die Zeit vorzubereiten. Der Christus Jesus kam in der vierten Epoche, er gab der Welt die Richtung an. Er wird wiederkommen, wenn die Menschen die Fähigkeit haben werden, ihn anzuerkennen. Die menschliche Kultur wird durch das Geistselbst hineinschauen in höhere Welten.

[ 21 ] In the sixth period, the Manas, or spiritual self, will trickle into the conscious soul. Since the fourteenth century, the initiates have told themselves that they must reckon with science; the spiritual researcher knows all its facts. The consciousness soul possesses the awareness of the Atma-truths, which have become real. The spiritual researcher knows, for example, that light does not arise through objective vibrations. What the times need is the inflow of the spiritual self. This is the aim of Rosicrucian training; it helped prepare the times. Christ Jesus came in the fourth epoch; he set the direction for the world. He will return when humanity has the capacity to recognize him. Through the spiritual self, human culture will look into higher worlds.

[ 22 ] Das System des Kopernikus, die Theorie von Darwin waren groß, weil sie das Denken schulten, ebenso die Physik des Galilei und so weiter, sie sind aber nur die Darstellung objektiver Tatsachen. Denken kann hineinversetzen in die Geisteswissenschaft.

[ 22 ] Copernicus’s system and Darwin’s theory were great because they trained the mind, as did Galileo’s physics and so on; yet they are merely the presentation of objective facts. Thinking can lead into Spiritual Science.

[ 23 ] In der sechsten Periode wird sich ein großer Umschwung in Europa vollziehen, die Völker des Ostens werden mit denen des Westens verschmolzen werden. Der Zusammenfall der Bewusstseinsseele mit dem Manas oder Geistselbst ist das, was im Neuen Testament mit dem Heiligen Geist bezeichnet wird, das ist das Programm der Zukunft. Es wird auf alle Fälle geschehen, was sich auch entgegensetzen wird. Wie Blätter vom Baume fallen, werden die Gegenströmungen abgestoßen werden. [ 23 ] In the sixth epoch, a great upheaval will take place in Europe; the peoples of the East will merge with those of the West. The union of the consciousness soul with the Manas, or spiritual self, is what is referred to in the New Testament as the Holy Spirit; this is the program of the future. It will certainly happen, whatever opposition there may be. Just as leaves fall from a tree, the opposing currents will be cast aside. Those who have learned to walk in accordance with the true laws can cooperate.

[ 24 ] Nicht nur das Seelenleben gestaltet sich um, auch der Menschenleib. Wir haben Organe, die im Verfalle sind, andere bilden sich aus. Die der Fortpflanzung haben das kürzeste Leben, sie kamen zuletzt und werden zuerst abfallen. Sie bildeten sich in der lemurischen Zeit und wurden von dem Astralleib erpresst. Vorher hatten Mensch und Tier Fortpflanzungsorgane, die vom Ätherleib durchsetzt waren, sie waren pflanzlicher Natur. Die Änderung geschah, indem der Ätherleib vom Astralleib ergriffen wurde, so wurden später die niedrigsten Verrichtungen fleischlicher Natur. In den Vatikanischen Sammlungen kann man in einer Ecke einen Mann schauen, dem ein pflanzliches Gebilde aus der Rückseite wächst, so treu bewahrte die Kunst das Geheimnis der früheren Fortpflanzung. Das ‹Feigenblatt› hat eine ganz andere Bedeutung als die gewöhnlich angenommene, es ist die Hindeutung auf das Herabsteigen des Menschen durch das Pflanzenblatt.

[ 24 ] Not only is the soul life being transformed, but so is the human body. We have organs that are decaying, while others are forming. Those related to reproduction have the shortest lifespan; they came last and will fall away first. They formed during the Lemurian epoch and were imposed by the astral body. Previously, humans and animals had reproductive organs permeated by the etheric body; they were of a plant-like nature. The change occurred when the etheric body was taken over by the astral body; thus, the lowest functions later became of a carnal nature. In the Vatican Collections, one can see in a corner a man from whom a plant-like formation grows from the back; so faithfully did art preserve the secret of earlier reproduction. The “fig leaf” has a completely different meaning than is commonly assumed; it is an allusion to humanity’s descent through the plant leaf.

[ 25 ] Im Aufstieg wird der Kehlkopf das Organ sein, das der Fortpflanzung dient. Das Innere der Seele wird nach außen reproduziert durch Vorstellungen und Schlüsse, die sich in Worten äußern. Das Wort ist verdichtete Gestalt. Das ist der Vorgang der Schöpfung; die [Sonnenwesen] schufen durch das ausgesprochene Schöpferwort. Alles Geschaffene ist verdichtetes Gotteswort.

[ 25 ] In the ascent, the larynx will be the organ that serves reproduction. The inner life of the soul is reproduced outwardly through mental images and conclusions that find expression in words. The word is condensed form. This is the process of creation; the [solar beings] created through the spoken word of creation. All that is created is the condensed word of God.

[ 26 ] Goethe hatte Sinn dafür, indem er dichtet: «Die Sonne tönt.» Die Engel sind schaffende Sonnengötter. Der Mensch ist berufen, durch das Wort schöpferisch zu werden. Im Anfang war das Wort, das Wort wurde Fleisch. Das ist der Christus Jesus, wie Johannes im Evangelium bezeugt.

[ 26 ] Goethe had a sense of this when he wrote: “The sun resounds.” The angels are creative sun gods. Humanity is called to become creative through the word. In the beginning was the Word; the Word became flesh. This is Christ Jesus, as John testifies in the Gospel.
