My dear sisters and brothers! We must realize that there is a great difference between external, exoteric knowledge and the knowledge that theosophy imparts to us. When we allow an external view to influence us, mental images and concepts form within us; we learn about the thing we are looking at, we gain knowledge about it. Is it the same with theosophical knowledge? Here too, when we are told about the four limbs of the human being or about the planetary states of the earth or the Akashic Chronicle, we form concepts and mental images about these things, but there is something else involved. While exoteric knowledge does not enrich us and leaves nothing behind after death, it is different with all esoteric knowledge. It flows into us, into our astral body, and forms certain new members there; new threads weave themselves into the astral body and remain connected to our being. We know that the astral body surrounds the human being in an egg shape. Since an I works within it, it radiates outwards:
New threads, new insights, weave their way into it, so that we can call it the “body of knowledge.” This body of knowledge will become denser and stronger and will finally become spirit itself. By developing it, we alone make the planetary evolution of the earth possible. On Jupiter, this body of knowledge will already be as dense as our astral body, on Venus as dense as our etheric body, and on Vulcan it will finally have become as physical as our blood, for example.
How can this theosophical knowledge become so fruitful that the body of knowledge develops in the astral body? Let us clarify this with a concrete example.
We are surrounded by physical, material air. We breathe it in. That is what keeps us alive. This is described in the Bible with the words: “God breathed into man the breath of life, and he became a living soul.” But what we breathe out, carbon dioxide, cannot sustain life; it is the air of death. Death came about because we were released from the bosom of the gods. Man ate from the tree of knowledge, which means that with the help of Lucifer, he gained his independence, his freedom. Therefore, he was expelled from paradise, which means that he is no longer an air man, as in the Lemurian era, but has become a water man and then an earth man. As long as he is on earth, Lucifer will have power over him. But that is the tragedy of this being: Lucifer's power does not extend beyond the earth. All pain and suffering arise from Lucifer and are connected with this tragedy.
On Jupiter, there will also be no more exoteric knowledge. If man had remained in paradise, he would also have eaten from the tree of life. Through the influence of Lucifer, the tree of life was taken away from him, and with it the possibility of sinking much lower than he did after eating from the tree of knowledge. Now, however, the tree of life is transformed into a sign that initially signifies death, but which contains within itself a higher life that man can attain if he makes the cross with the red roses his own.
Just as the earth is surrounded by an envelope of air that humans breathe, so too is there a spiritual substance in this air that wants to flow into humans. It is up to us whether we let this spiritual substance escape again as death air, or whether we connect it with our theosophical knowledge and weave its fruit into our astral body. But this is not only important for us, but for the entire cosmos. If we breathe in this spiritual substance without making it fruitful within us, we take something from the cosmos without giving anything back, thus hindering evolution. It depends on us whether the Jupiter state can follow on Earth, namely by increasing these spiritual forces in the Earth's orbit.
When we look at Saturn, we know that our physical body originated there in its first form. It arose from the thoughts of the gods, and these thoughts condensed into what we are today. But it was already planned on Saturn that human beings would continue the work of the gods, and we do this when we allow the spiritual substance of our environment to flow into us in order to build up our body of knowledge from it.
That was the purpose of the Mystery of Golgotha, to offer human beings this opportunity. What is it that we take in with this spiritual substance within us? It is Christ Himself. Before the Mystery of Golgotha, this was not so. People could say, “Ex Deo nascimur” (We are born from God). Those who were to be initiated at that time were prepared to return to what had been handed down by the ancient gods. But we know that with the mystery of Golgotha, the aura of our earth changed because Christ became the spirit of the earth. He poured himself substantially into this earth aura and has been contained within it ever since. And now the time has come again when this poured-out Christ substance has become condensed so that it can be taken up by human beings. In Christo morimur therefore means nothing other than to immerse oneself in this spiritual substance and take Christ completely into oneself, so that one can say: “Not I, but Christ in me.”
But we must not forget one thing: where there is much light, there is also much shadow. With the new teachings that have been given to our time, many errors will also creep in, so it is our sacred duty to examine everything we hear with our common sense. This has always been emphasized in all Rosicrucian esotericism. However, we should show tolerance toward those who err, and always say to ourselves: if what we have is really the truth, it will stand on its own. But if it is error, then through my ardent striving for truth, I will attain the certainty of finding the truth in my next incarnation.

Knowledge on the physical plane, like all science, art, and even mediumistic spiritualistic knowledge, is Luciferic knowledge, which is doomed to death, just as exhaled air is dead. Theosophical knowledge, on the other hand, is substantial, building up the body of knowledge, the future spirit self on Jupiter.
Just as the air surrounds us, so does the spiritual environment, which since the event at Golgotha has been the Christ light and has now become so condensed that we can take it in. We must take it in with the body of knowledge so that it is not killed, but works alive within us. A Rosicrucian saying goes: Man is immortal if he wants to be. The body of knowledge is the immortal part that we take with us beyond death. Rosicrucian esotericism has shaped every word in such a way that it develops the powers of logical thinking and reason, and thus everything that research communicates from the spiritual worlds must be grasped and examined. No blind faith should rule in human beings; blind faith in authority kills logical thinking and the spiritual in human beings. Lucifer is a tragic figure who knows that his power over humanity will end with the Earth. All pain and suffering in the world is Luciferic. Human beings used to be in the air circle of the Earth; it was only through Lucifer that they fell into the watery and earthy elements: this is the basis of the image of the Fall. Without Lucifer, human beings would have instinctively woven the body of knowledge into their three other members. The plan of freedom was inserted as the second plan of Earth's development. On the Sabbath, the gods rested—this is to be taken literally, since man must now continue working on his higher members himself; he must build up his body of knowledge himself through theosophical thoughts and insights, just as the gods on Saturn created our physical body through thoughts and mental images. The clairvoyance of the present time is the emergence of spiritual forms into human consciousness; human beings form them by taking in the Christ light into their bodies of knowledge. Human beings were not allowed to eat from the tree of life in Paradise because then they would have remained in Lucifer's realm on Earth with their knowledge. Now that the Tree of Life has become the Cross, dead wood from which new life—the roses—sprouts, he is to eat from the Tree of Life and drink the juice of the roses. In Christo morimur means to merge into the spiritual environment of the earth through meditation. Christ only needed to come to earth once because humanity has progressed since then and will be able to see him differently in the future.

Meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder! Wir müssen uns klarmachen, daß ein großer Unterschied besteht zwischen dem äußeren, exoterischen Wissen und dem Wissen, das uns die Theosophie übermittelt. Wenn wir eine äußere Anschauung auf uns wirken lassen, so bilden sich in uns Vorstellungen, Begriffe; wir lernen die Sache, das, was wir anschauen, dadurch kennen, haben ein Wissen über sie. Verhält es sich nun ebenso mit dem theosophischen Wissen? Auch da, wenn uns erzählt wird von den vier Gliedern des Menschen oder von den planetarischen Zuständen der Erde, oder der Akasha-Chronik, bilden wir uns Begriffe, Vorstellungen über diese Dinge, aber es ist noch etwas anderes dabei. Während uns das exoterische Wissen nicht bereichert, nichts hinterläßt über den Tod hinaus, verhält es sich anders mit allem esoterischen Wissen. Es fließt in uns ein, in unsern Astralleib, bildet da gewisse neue Glieder; neue Fäden weben sich hinein in den Astralleib und bleiben mit unserer Wesenheit verbunden. - Wir wissen, daß der Astralleib den Menschen in Eiform umgibt. Da in ihm ein Ich wirkt, so strahlt er aus:
Dahinein weben sich neue Fäden, neue Erkenntnisse, so daß wir ihn nennen können «Erkenntnisleib». Dieser Erkenntnisleib wird immer dichter, immer stärker werden und endlich Geistselbst sein. Dadurch, daß wir ihn ausbilden, ist auch allein eine planetarische Fortentwicklung der Erde möglich. Dieser Erkenntnisleib wird auf dem Jupiter schon so dicht sein wie unser Astralleib, auf der Venus wie unser Ätherleib; auf dem Vulkan endlich so physisch geworden sein wie unser Blut etwa.
Wodurch kann denn dieses theosophische Wissen so fruchtbar werden, so daß sich im Astralleib der Erkenntnisleib herausbildet? Machen wir es uns an einem konkreten Beispiel klar.
Wir sind umgeben von der physischen, materiellen Luft. Wir atmen sie ein. Dadurch leben wir. Das ist in der Bibel bezeichnet durch die Worte: «Gott blies dem Menschen ein den lebendigen Odem, und er ward eine lebende Seele.» Aber das, was wir ausatmen, die Kohlensäure, kann kein Leben erhalten, es ist Todesluft. Dadurch, daß wir aus dem Schoße der Götter entlassen sind, ist der Tod eingetreten. Der Mensch hat von dem Baume der Erkenntnis gegessen, das heißt, mit Hilfe von Luzifer hat er seine Selbständigkeit, seine Freiheit errungen. Daher ist er aus dem Paradiese vertrieben worden, das heißt, er ist kein Luftmensch mehr, wie in der lemurischen Zeit, sondern er ist ein Wasser- und dann ein Erdenmensch geworden. Solange er auf Erden ist, wird Luzifer über ihn Gewalt haben. Aber das ist das Tragische bei dieser Wesenheit: über die Erde hinaus reicht Luzifers Macht nicht. Alle Schmerzen, alles Leid entstehen durch Luzifer und hängen zusammen mit dieser Tragik.
Auf dem Jupiter wird es auch kein exoterisches Wissen mehr geben. Wäre der Mensch im Paradiese geblieben, so hätte er auch noch gegessen vom Baume des Lebens. Durch die Einwirkung von Luzifer ist ihm der Baum des Lebens entzogen worden, und dadurch die Möglichkeit, viel tiefer zu sinken, als er es getan hat nach dem Genuß vom Baume der Erkenntnis. Nun aber wird der Baum des Lebens verwandelt in das Zeichen, das zwar zuerst den Tod bedeutet, aber ein um so höheres Leben in sich birgt, das der Mensch erringen kann, wenn er das Kreuz mit den roten Rosen sich zu eigen macht.
Wie die Erde von einer Lufthülle umgeben ist, die der Mensch einatmet, so befindet sich in dieser Luft auch eine spirituelle Substanz, die in den Menschen einfließen will. Auf uns kommt es an, ob wir diese spirituelle Substanz wieder herauslassen als Todesluft, oder ob wir sie in Verbindung bringen mit unserem theosophischen Wissen und die Frucht einverweben unserem Astralleib. Aber nicht für uns allein ist das von Wichtigkeit, sondern für den ganzen Kosmos. Atmen wir diese spirituelle Substanz ein, ohne sie in uns fruchtbar zu machen, so nehmen wir dem Kosmos etwas, geben ihm aber nichts dafür zurück und hindern so die Evolution. Von uns hängt es ab, ob auf den Erden- der Jupiterzustand folgen kann, indem wir nämlich diese spirituellen Kräfte im Umkreise der Erde vermehren.
Wenn wir hinblicken auf den Saturn, so wissen wir, daß unser physischer Leib da in seiner ersten Anlage entstand. Er ist entstanden aus den Gedanken der Götter, und diese Gedanken haben sich verdichtet zu dem, was wir heute sind. Es ist aber schon auf dem Saturn darauf gerechnet worden, daß der Mensch die Arbeit der Götter fortsetzen werde, und das tun wir, wenn wir die spirituelle Substanz unserer Umgebung in uns einfließen lassen, um aus ihr aufzubauen unseren Erkenntnisleib.
Das ist der Zweck des Mysteriums auf Golgatha gewesen, dem Menschen diese Gelegenheit zu bieten. Was ist es denn, was wir mit dieser spirituellen Substanz in uns aufnehmen? Es ist der Christus selber. Vor dem Mysterium von Golgatha war es nicht so. Da konnten die Menschen wohl sagen: Ex Deo nascimur. Die damals Einzuweihenden wurden so vorbereitet, daß sie zurückgingen auf das, was von den alten Göttern überliefert war. Aber wir wissen, daß mit dem Mysterium von Golgatha sich die Aura unserer Erde verändert hat, weil der Christus der Geist der Erde geworden ist. Er hat sich substantiell in diese Erdenaura ausgegossen und ist seitdem in ihr enthalten. Und wieder ist jetzt der Zeitpunkt da, wo diese ausgegossene Christus-Substanz sich verdichtet hat, so daß sie von den Menschen aufgenommen werden kann. In Christo morimur heißt daher nichts anderes, als sich in diese spirituelle Substanz versenken und den Christus ganz mit ihr aufzunehmen, so daß man sagen kann: «Nicht ich, sondern der Christus in mir.»
Eines dürfen wir aber nicht vergessen: wo viel Licht ist, da ist auch viel Schatten. Mit den neuen Weistümern, die unserer Zeit gegeben worden sind, werden sich auch viele Irrtümer einschleichen, da ist es denn unsere heilige Pflicht, alles, was wir hören, mit unserm gesunden Menschenverstand nachzuprüfen. Immer ist dies in aller Rosenkreuzer-Esoterik betont worden. Jedoch denen gegenüber, die da irren, sollen wir Toleranz walten lassen, sollen wir uns immer sagen: ist es wirklich die Wahrheit, die wir haben, so wird sie durch sich selber bestehen. Ist es aber Irrtum, so werde ich mir durch mein heißes Streben nach Wahrheit für die nächste Inkarnation die Sicherheit erringen, die Wahrheit zu finden.
Im Geiste lag der Keim meines Leibes ...

Erkenntnis auf dem physischen Plan wie alle Wissenschaft, Kunst, auch mediale spiritistische Erkenntnis ist luziferische Erkenntnis, die dem Tode geweiht ist, wie die ausgeatmete Luft getötet ist. Die theosophische Erkenntnis dagegen ist Substantielles, das den Erkenntnisleib aufbaut, das zukünftige Geistselbst auf dem Jupiter.
Wie die Luft uns umgibt, so auch der spirituelle Umkreis, der seit dem Ereignis von Golgatha das Christus-Licht ist und sich nun so verdichtet hat, daß wir es aufnehmen können. Wir müssen es aufnehmen mit dem Erkenntnisleib, damit es nicht getötet wird, sondern in uns lebendig wirkt. Ein Rosenkreuzerspruch lautet: der Mensch ist unsterblich, wenn er es sein will. - Der Erkenntnisleib ist das Unsterbliche, das wir mitnehmen über den Tod hinaus. Die Rosenkreuzer-Esoterik hat jedes Wort so geprägt, daß es ausbildet die Kräfte des logischen Denkens, der Vernunft, und damit muß alles, was die Forschung aus den geistigen Welten mitteilt, erfaßt und geprüft werden. Kein blinder Glaube soll im Menschen walten; blinder Autoritätsglaube tötet das logische Denken und das Spirituelle im Menschen. Luzifer ist eine tragische Gestalt, sie weiß, daß ihre Macht über die Menschheit mit der Erde auch zu Ende ist. Aller Schmerz und alles Leid der Welt ist luziferisch. Der Mensch war früher im Luftkreis der Erde, erst durch Luzifer ist er dem wäßrigen und erdigen Element verfallen: dies liegt dem Bilde des Sündenfalls zu Grunde. Ohne Luzifer hätte der Mensch instinktiv den Erkenntnisleib seinen drei andern Gliedern einverwoben. Der Plan der Freiheit ist als zweiter Plan der Erdenentwicklung eingefügt. Am Sabbath ruhten die Götter - das ist wörtlich zu nehmen, da der Mensch nun selbst weiterarbeiten muß an seinen höhern Gliedern; den Erkenntnisleib muß er selbst durch die theosophischen Gedanken und Erkenntnisse aufbauen, genau so, wie die Götter auf dem Saturn unsern physischen Leib durch Gedanken und Vorstellungen schufen. Das Hellsehen der Jetztzeit ist das Auftauchen spiritueller Gebilde ins Bewußtsein der Menschen; der Mensch bildet sie durch Aufnahme des Christus-Lichtes in seinem Erkenntnisleib. Der Mensch durfte im Paradies nicht von dem Baume des Lebens essen, weil er dann auf der Erde mit seiner Erkenntnis immer in Luzifers Reich geblieben wäre. Nun, da der Baum des Lebens zum Kreuzesbaum geworden, zum toten Holz, aus dem das neue Leben - die Rosen - aufsprießt, nun soll er essen vom Baum des Lebens und trinken den Saft der Rosen. - In Christo morimur heißt: in der Meditation aufgehen in den spirituellen Umkreis der Erde. Christus brauchte nur einmal auf die Erde zu kommen, weil die Menschheit seitdem vorwärtsgeschritten ist und ihn anders wird schauen können in Zukunft.
