14. Four Mystery Plays: The Guardian of the Threshold: Scene 8
Translated by Harry Collison

Ahriman's Kingdom. No sky is visible. A dark en-closure like a mountain gorge whose black masses of rock tower up in fantastic forms, divided by streams of fire.
(All the persons who at the beginning of the play were assembled in the ante-room of the mystic league now appear on the scene; they are blindfolded to show their ignorance of the fact that they are in Ahriman's kingdom. The words they speak live in their souls, but they know nothing of them. They are experiencing during sleep unconscious dreams which are audible in Ahriman's kingdom.
Mary Dauntless: Souls that would stunt their own inherent strength May let external powers mould their life True man will only seek development From his own deepest personality. Ahriman (audible only to Strader): It is but human what these souls conceal. One cannot tell what they may yet achieve; For Lucifer may try his power on them, And make them think they are but working out Each his own powers of soul with steadfast aim; And so perchance he hath not lost them yet.
13. Occult Science - An Outline: Knowledge of the Higher Worlds (Concerning Initiation)
Translated by George Adams, Mary Adams

And in connection with Earth evolution itself, the Spirits of Lucifer and of Ahriman were mentioned. The whole edifice of the Universe was traced back to Beings who all had their share in bringing it into existence.
If we have made an intelligent study of the evolution of the world and of man, and have learned how at a particular moment in this evolution the forces of Lucifer penetrated into the human soul, we shall not be unduly disturbed when we become conscious of the presence, in the picture of our own being, of the Luciferic beings and their activities.
In the course of evolution, however, owing to the influence of Lucifer, another power has found its way into the human soul; we called it in earlier sections of this book the power of Ahriman.
69e. The Humanities and the Future of Humanity: Zarathustra, His Teaching and His Mission 31 Jan 1911, Cologne

During the day, the sun passes through part of the zodiac; the day sun is Ormuzd, the night sun is Ahriman. Ormuzd is associated with one half of the zodiacal signs and Ahriman with the other. There is a common basis for good and evil.
Thus he becomes the companion of Ormuzd, who always wrestled with Ahriman. Such was the case with this simple cultured people. Through moral purification the obstacles are overcome.
This requires a sense of history. One should be grateful to Ahriman.
141. Between Death and Rebirth: Lecture IX 04 Mar 1913, Berlin
Translated by Dorothy S. Osmond, E. H. Goddard

On the Earth such an individual can take no interest in spiritual worlds; and his soul, after passing through the gate of death, is an easy prey for the Luciferic powers. Lucifer makes straight for such souls. Here we have the strange situation that in the next life in the spiritual world, the life that follows the dull, unreceptive one, the deeds and the Beings of the higher Hierarchies are indeed illumined for such an individual but in this case not as a result of what he acquired in earthly life but by the light which Lucifer sends into his soul. It is Lucifer who illumines the higher worlds for him when he passes into the life between death and rebirth.
Ahriman was his leader and it was Ahriman who contrived that the gifts of the Beings of the higher Hierarchies could only be received by him in a form that would finally result in his thinking coming to a halt when confronting actual facts, and in his inability to make his thinking exhaustive and valid.
203. The Responsibility of Man for World Evolution: Lecture II 30 Jan 1921, Dornach

The Ahrimanic being, this cold ossified, bald-pated Ahriman—to speak figuratively—slinks round our modern educational centres and would like them to remain as they are.
On the other hand, in the social life in which men establish their earthly claims without a feeling of the cosmos, and inasmuch as they only speak of these earthly claims without being penetrated, inflamed and inspired with the cosmic consciousness—here actually the Luciferic beings come into their own. There we see how Lucifer lives. I cannot here use the picture, which is a picture but yet is born actually from genuine Ahrimanic concepts, the picture of the ossified, slinking, bald-pated Ahriman, who slinks round educational institutes and wants to preserve them as they are. This picture would not apply to the nature of Lucifer. But another picture would apply: Let opinions be expressed out of mere egoism, with no feeling of the cosmos, even with good will and well-meant social intentions, then the true nature of Lucifer breaks out from what is being expressed.
55. The Origin of Suffering the Origin of Evil Illness and Death: The Origin of Evil 22 Nov 1906, Berlin
Translated by Mabel Cotterell, Violet E. Watkin

One calls them Luciferic beings, or groups them together under the name of their leader, Lucifer. How does Lucifer work upon man? Not as the gods do. The divine approaches the noblest in man; it cannot and must not approach the lower.
Freedom and evil have the same original source. Lucifer makes man humanly enthusiastic for the divine. Lucifer is the bearer of light; the Elohim are light itself. If the light of wisdom has kindled wisdom in man, then Lucifer has brought light into man. But the black shadow of evil had to intermingle; Lucifer brings a shrunken, blemished wisdom but this can penetrate into man.
266III. From the Contents of Esoteric Classes III: 1913–1914: Esoteric Lesson 25 Apr 1914, Berlin

Waking up means that we shoo away these elemental beings from their working place. And as soon as we're in day consciousness Ahriman sees to it that the spiritual world is covered for us. He paints the picture of the sense world, and as we devote ourselves to maya—the great deceiver—the beings or souls that work on man's spiritual organization disappear for us. The physical body that we know is all a product of Ahriman, whereas we must know that the soul life that we merely experience in the physical body is Lucifer's work.
55. Supersensible Knowledge: The Origin of Evil 22 Nov 1906, Berlin
Translated by Rita Stebbing

They are designated as Luciferian beings, or collectively by the name of their leader—Lucifer. Lucifer's influence on human beings is very different from that of the gods. The gods approach what is noblest in human nature; a mortal's lower nature they cannot and must not approach.
Lucifer brought light into human beings by kindling in them the light of wisdom, albeit mingled with the black shadow of evil. The wisdom Lucifer brings is shrunken and blemished, but it penetrates into mortals; he brings external science that serves egoism.
263. Correspondence with Edith Maryon 1912–1924: Letter from Edith Maryon 08 Mar 1922,

I am sending you a Theosophical letter that was meant for you. Today the fourth block of Lucifer was delivered, and I hope to restore some order in the studio by tomorrow evening. It would have been impossible for you to work here during this time. Your corner with the table and everything was completely cleared, and they built a kind of track where the blocks could travel; and where Ahriman stood, there is now a forest of beams and poles, etc.; the studio furniture and the models are all piled up in the corners.
265. The History of the Esoteric School 1904–1914, Volume Two: The World Must be Built

Master of the present: In willing devotion Hear my soul's ear Your creative word So that not forever lost Man from the world's goal And Lucifer must perish. Master of the future: In loving willing I connect my own self With your world-will It shall unite Man's willpower With the power-generating world-word. In loving-filled volition the I unites itself with your world-will In it alone may it hope to spare itself from Ahriman's coldness of soul to find itself. Apprentice of the world and of life We lose ourselves.
