Lecture VI
[ 1 ] We saw yesterday how the facts of the Cosmos proceed from the spiritual life of Beings who stand above man. Especially such a phenomenon as the one we introduced towards the end of our last lecture, the fight in heaven, which has left, so to speak, so many ‘corpses’ on the field of battle between Jupiter and Mars, which as planetoids are still being discovered by physical science in ever-increasing numbers; such a phenomenon must be of particular importance to us, and we shall have to return to it again: We shall see how this event is also reflected in certain processes of the earth's evolution, and how precisely in the beginning of the Bhagavad Gita we find the earthly reflection of this fight in heaven.
[ 2 ] But to-day we shall continue our studies so as to describe, though in a sketchy way, those other beings of the spiritual Hierarchies, whom we have indicated already, but whom yesterday we omitted. These are the Beings who, counting upwards, stand nearest to man, and are called in Christian Esotericism: Angels, Archangels, Primeval Beginnings or Primeval Forces; also Angeloi, Archangeloi, and Archai. In theosophical literature the Archangels are also called Spirits of Fire, and the primeval Beginnings, spirits of Personality.
[ 3 ] These Beings who stand, as it were, in between man and those others to whom we referred yesterday as reaching up to Jupiter, Mars, etc., naturally stand in a nearer relation to man on the earth itself. First we have the Angels or Angeloi. They passed through their human stage during the evolution of the ancient Moon, and are fundamentally speaking, only as far on during our present earth evolution as man will be during the Jupiter evolution. They stand one stage higher than man. What is the task of these Beings? Their task can be realised when we take into account the development of man upon earth.
[ 4 ] Man develops from incarnation to incarnation. Our human evolution as it is now, reaches back through the ancient Atlantean time, through the Lemurian time and really begins in the ancient Lemurian time. This evolution through all these incarnations will continue for a long time yet, till towards the end of earthly evolution when other forms of human development will have come in. Now you know that what we call the eternal nucleus or kernel of the human being, the individuality, continues from incarnation to incarnation. But you also know that the greater number of people have to-day no recollection, no consciousness, as yet of their incarnations, and men do not as yet remember what happened to them during their former incarnations. Only those who have developed a certain degree of clairvoyance can look at their past incarnations.
[ 5 ] What sequence would there be between a man's incarnations upon earth when he cannot remember his former incarnations, if certain beings were not there to connect the separate incarnations, and watch the progress of the individual from one incarnation to the other? We have to assign one of these Beings to each man, a being who, being one stage higher, can lead the individuality over from one incarnation to the other. These are not the beings who rule Karma [but] preserve the memory from one incarnation to the other, so long as the man is not himself aware of it. These Beings are the Angels. Each man is a personality in each incarnation, and over each man a being watches, who has a consciousness which passes from one incarnation to the other. This makes it possible that in certain inferior grades of initiation, man is able, even if he does not himself know anything about his past incarnations, to ask his Angel about them. This is quite possible for certain lower degrees of initiation. The Beings who, as Angels, are one stage higher than men, have to keep watch over the whole human thread of life, which is spun for each single individuality from one incarnation to another.
Now, we pass on to the next group of Beings, to the Archangels — Archangeloi or Fire Spirits. These do not occupy themselves with separate men, with the single individual, but have a wider task; they bring single lives into harmonious order with the life of larger human groups, as, for instance, nations, races, etc. Within our earth's evolution the Archangels’ task is to bring into certain harmonious relationship each single soul with the national or race-soul. For those who penetrate into spiritual knowledge, the souls of races are something quite different from what they are for the lovers of the abstract in the science of to-day, or for present day culture in general. On a certain territory, (let us take Germany, France or Italy) live so and so many people, and because the physical eye sees only so many external human forms, such lovers of the abstract can imagine what is called the Soul of a nation or Spirit of a nation only as a comprehensive general idea of a nation. For the lover of abstractions the separate man only is real, not the soul of the nation, not the spirit of the nation. For one who truly sees into the inner working of spiritual life, that which is called the nation's soul or spirit, is a reality. In the soul of a nation there lives and weaves what we call a fire-spirit or an Archangel; he regulates, so to speak, the relation between separate men and the nation or races as a whole
[ 6 ] Then we rise to those beings whom we designate the Spirits of Personality, primeval beginnings, primeval forces, or Archai. These are still loftier Beings, who have a still higher task in the continuity of human existence. Fundamentally speaking, they regulate the earthly relations of whole human generations on earth, and they live in such a way that, on the waves of time, from epoch to epoch, they transform themselves at certain definite periods, they assume other spiritual bodies. Here again, you all know something of that which for the lovers of the abstract, is merely an idea, but which is a reality for those who can look into actual spiritual existence; it is that which is given a truly ugly name — the spirit of the time. You have here to do with that which represents the meaning and the mission of an epoch of humanity; picture to yourselves that we could describe the meaning and the mission of, for instance, the first thousands of years immediately after the Atlantean catastrophe. This ‘Spirit of the Age’ comprises something which reaches beyond single nations, beyond single races. Such a spirit is not limited to this or that nation, it goes beyond the limits of nations. That which one really calls a ‘Zeitgeist’ or Spirit of an epoch is the spiritual body of the Archai or the Primeval Beginnings or Spirits of Personality. It is to these Spirits of Personality that one has to ascribe the fact that within certain epochs, certain definite personalities appear on our earth. You understand, do you not, that earthly tasks have to be solved by earthly personalities; in a definite epoch, some epoch-making personality has had to appear. A strange muddle would come into the evolution of the earth if it were all left to chance, and Luther or Charlemagne were placed within any epoch, no matter which. This must be thought out first, the connexion with the whole evolution of humanity over the whole earth, has to be thought out; the right soul has to appear in harmony with the meaning of the whole earth's development. This is regulated by the Spirits of Personality, the Archai or primeval origins.
[ 7 ] And when we get beyond the Archai, we reach to those Beings whom we touched on yesterday, the so called Powers, — Exusiai, whom we also call the Spirits of Form. Here we have to do with tasks that reach beyond the earth. We differentiate in the course of human development a Saturn, Sun, Moon, Earth, Jupiter, Venus, and Vulcan evolution. We have now seen how all that happens within the earth itself is regulated by the Angels as regards the individual men, by Archangels as regards the relation between individuals and the large masses of humanity, and by the Spirits of Personality for the whole development of man, from the Lemurian period up to the period when man will again be so largely spiritualised that he will hardly belong to the earth. But something else has yet to be regulated. Humanity will have to be guided from one planetary condition to another. Spiritual Beings must also exist, whose care it is during the whole earth evolution to see that when that evolution will have come to an end, humanity may pass in the right manner through a Pralaya and find its way to the next goal, to the Jupiter goal. These are the Powers or Spirits of Form; yesterday we characterised their task from above downwards, now we characterise them from below upwards. The spirits whose care it is to see that the whole of humanity should be led from one planetary condition to another, are the Powers, Exusiai or Spirits of Form.
[ 8 ] We must now make a certain disclosure about the Cosmic position of these Beings. In spiritual science, in that which it is desired to continue to-day in Anthroposophy, and which is at bottom [of] the Wisdom of the Mysteries, these different Beings of the heavenly Hierarchies have always been spoken of as we have spoken of them to-day. We heard yesterday that the present Saturn represents the limit up to which reached the action of the Thrones or Spirits of Will; Jupiter, the limit up to which the Dominions, Spirits of Wisdom, acted; and Mars, the boundary line up to which reached the influence of the Mights, Dynamis or Virtutes, or Spirits of Motion.
[ 9 ] We may now characterise in a similar way how the Beings we named to-day divided specially the realms over which they held sway within our solar system. We must here touch on something which will perhaps call forth a certain amazement, even in you, who are already in a certain way schooled Anthroposophists, but which is absolutely in accordance with the truth. In the school curriculum of the present day, it is indicated that once upon a time, in grey antiquity, before Copernicus, there had been a conception of our Solar system which is known as the Ptolemaic System. People then believed that the earth stood in the centre of our system, and that the planets coursed round it, as they appear to do to our ordinary physical sight. Since Copernicus one knows — at least so people say — what people did not know formerly, that the Sun stands in the middle and that the planets circle around it, in their respective ellipses. But that which ought to be made quite clear and precise to people by such a description of our solar system, if one sincerely and honestly expounds it in the present day sense, is still something quite different. One ought to say: up to Copernicus, people knew only certain forms of movement in Universal space, and according to these, they judged how it could be with our solar system. What Copernicus did is not that he, so to speak, took a chair and gazed into space to see how the sun stands in some point of a circle or ellipse and how the planets turn around it; but he made a calculation, and this calculation explains what is seen in a simpler way than the former calculation did. The Copernican world system is nothing but the result, the product, of thought. [ 10 ] Let us look at it once from the point of view of the Ptolemaic. Let us consider that the Sun stands in the middle, let us calculate where the places of the planets must be, and then search whether it coincides with experience. Certainly, for mere physical observation, it coincides at first completely. Certainly one has built upon it all sorts of world systems, the Kant-Laplace system, for instance; but there one reaches a point where there were continual discoveries, a point which is no more scientifically quite honest. For later on, by purely physical observation, two planets have been added to it — we have not touched on them yet, but later we will show what they signify for our system — these are Uranus and Neptune. When one describes this world system one certainly should turn people's attention to the fact that in reality these two planets Uranus and Neptune, very much impair the truth of the calculation. [ 11 ] If one accepts the Kant-Laplace system, then, according to it, Uranus and Neptune should move with their moons as the other moons move around the other planets. But they do not; we even have among those outer planets, these two lately discovered planets, one which behaves in a very strange way. In reality, if the Kant-Laplace system is correct, somebody must, after having split off the rest of the planets, [have] turned the axis in such a way that it revolved at 90°, for its course is different from that of the other planets. These two differ greatly from the other planets of our solar systems. We shall see later how it is with them, but now we simply call attention to the fact that with the Copernican system we have only to do with a calculation, with something established as an hypothesis, as an assumption, at a time when man had gone completely adrift from the perception of spiritual co-relations and of what lies spiritually at the foundation of external happenings. But the old Ptolemaic system is not merely a physical system, it is one which was still derived from spiritual observation, when one knew that planets are boundary marks for certain realms where the higher Beings held sway. We must design our whole solar planetary system in a different way if we are to characterise these realms of control correctly. I shall draw this planetary system for you as it was expounded in the Mystery Schools of Zarathustra. We could just as well turn to other Mysteries for counsel, but we shall specially select this system for the explanation of our solar system with its planets, in respect of the spiritual Beings who are active within.
[ 12 ] In the System of Zarathustra something was accepted which differs from our observation of the heavens. You know that one can observe a certain progress of the Sun—call it apparent or otherwise: through the Zodiac during the course of long years. It is generally said—and it is correct—that from about the year 270 B.C. the sun in spring rose at the first point of spring in the Zodiacal sign of Pisces. But every year the sun advanced a little further, so that in the course of long, long epochs of time, it traverses, as regards its point of rising through the whole of one Zodiacal sign. Before 270 B.C. it did not rise in Pisces but in Aries, with its rising point in spring-time, it travelled through the whole sign of Aries during 2150 years. Before that, Taurus had been the Zodiacal constellation in the spring during the previous period of 2150 years. So, if we go back to five or six thousand years B.C., we find the spring-point in the Zodiacal sign of Gemini. That was the time in which the Mystery Schools of Zarathustra flourished.1The following tabulation is not Steiner’s chronology, but common chronology as accepted by the astrologers.
In order to make this paragraph of use to the ordinary student it has been necessary to depart from the version as it stood in the reported text. The difference lies in the calculation of the dates. The conclusion to be drawn is approximately the same. We know Christ came during Pisces, which began 270 B.C. Add 2150 years and we get the following:
2420 B.C. as the beginning of Aries,
4570 B.C. as the beginning of Taurus,
6720 B C. as the beginning of Gemini.
Since our year 1881 we are under Aquarius. In other words:
Gemini begins 6720 B.C. down to 4570 B.C.
Taurus begins 4570 B.C. down to 2420 B.C.
Aries begins 2420 B.C. down to 270 B.C.
Pisces begins 270 B.C. down to 1881 A.D.
Far back into hoary antiquity these Schools flourished and, when speaking of the appearance of the heavens, they calculated everything according to the constellation of Gemini, so that if we wanted to draw the Zodiac in the way we characterised it yesterday, we should have to place the constellation of Gemini here at the top. Then one would have to draw, in direct connection with the Zodiac, that which bounds the realm of the Thrones or Spirits of Will, the boundary of which is Saturn. Then we come to the boundary limit of the realm of those spiritual Beings whom we call the Spirits of Wisdom — the utmost boundary being Jupiter. Then we reach the limit of the realm of the Spirits of Motion of which the limit is Mars. We have seen that between these lies the battlefield which the fight in Heaven has left behind. Now if we want to divide the realms of power correctly, we must draw the boundary line of the Sun. Thus, just as we draw Mars as the boundary point up to which is the domain ruled by the Mights and Spirits of Motion, we must draw the Sun itself as marking the limit to which the Lordship of the Powers or the Spirits of Form extends. And then we come to the boundary which we designate with the sign of Venus. The realm of the Spirits of Personality or Archai reaches to Venus. Next we come to the boundary of the realm, the limit of which is marked by the sign of Mercury, and is the realm of those Beings, whom we call Archangels or Fire Spirits. And now we come very near the earth. We can now designate the realm which has the Moon for a landmark, and here we draw the earth.
[ 13 ] You must look on the earth as the Starting Point surrounded by a region under the dominion of certain Beings which reaches to the Moon. Then comes a region extending as far as Mercury, then one extending to Venus, and then one to the Sun.
You may be astonished at the sequence in which I have placed the planets. When the earth is here, and the Sun there, you would have thought that I should draw Mercury in the vicinity of the Sun, and Venus here. But no! For these Planets have had their names interchanged, in later Astronomy. That which is called Mercury to-day was called Venus in all ancient teachings, and that which is called Venus was called Mercury. Thus, note it well, one does not understand the ancient writings when one takes that which in them is called Venus or Mercury for the Venus or Mercury of the present day. That which is said about Venus has to be applied to the Mercury of to-day, and what is said about Mercury to Venus. For those two designations were later interchanged. On the occasion when man turned the world system topsy-turvy, when the earth was deprived of its central position, the perspective was not only changed, but the designations of Mercury and Venus were also changed.
[ 14 ] Now you will very easily bring into harmony what is drawn here with the physical or Copernican theory. You need only think: here is , the Sun; around it turns Venus; further around it circles Mercury. Then the Moon turns round the earth. Then Jupiter revolves around it, then Saturn. You must think of the physical movements of each planet revolving round the Sun; but you can imagine such a position when the earth , so to say, stands here and the other planets have revolved so, that on their way they find themselves behind the Sun. Thus if I drew it, it would be so; we draw our usual physical system, we draw the Sun as the one burning point, and let Venus, Mercury and the Earth with her Moon revolve round it. These are Earth, Venus, Mercury, according to the ancient designation. The next following is Mars, then after the Planetoids comes Jupiter, then Saturn. Now imagine it so that whilst , the earth stands below, and Mercury and Venus follow, that then Mars , stands there above, Jupiter , there, and so on. Now you have the Sun, and Mercury, and the Venus of to-day , here. It is plausible, that if those planets can take all sort of positions towards each other, they might also have once stood thus. This is how the Copernican system is drawn, only a point of time is chosen, when the Earth, Mercury and Venus are on the one side of the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, the other planets, on its other side.
This is what I have drawn, and nothing else. Here are Earth, Mercury, Venus, on the one side, and on the other side, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Thus, we have to do only with a change of perspective. This system is quite possible but only when this constellation was there. It is a fact that it was there at a certain epoch, when Gemini was above Saturn. Then one could observe clairvoyantly with particular exactness the connections between the regions in which the Spiritual Hierarchies hold sway. It was then revealed that around the Earth, up to the Moon, was the sphere of the Angels. In fact when one does not use the physical system as a foundation, one gets around the earth up to the Moon, the sphere of the Angels, up to Mercury the sphere of the Archangels, up to Venus that of the Archai or Spirits of Personality, and lastly up to the Sun is the realm of the Exusiai or Spirits of Form. Then comes the sphere — as I characterised it yesterday — of the Virtutes or Mights, then the sphere of the Dominions, and then that of the Thrones.
[ 15 ] When one speaks of the Copernican and of the Ptolemaic systems, one must have it clear in one's mind that in the Ptolemaic system something still remains of the constellation of ruling Spirits, and there the Earth must be taken as the starting point of the perspective. A future will come when this world system will again be the correct one; because Man will again know about the Spiritual World. It is to be hoped that men will be then less fanatical than they are to-day
To day, it is said: ‘Before Copernicus, people all talked nonsense, they all had a primitive world system. Since Copernicus we at last know what is right. All else is false, and because the Copernican system is the right one it will be taught in all ages, even if it were for millions of years.’ This is more or less the talk of the day. There hardly ever existed such superstitious folk as are the modern astronomical theorists; and there hardly ever was such fanaticism as there is in this domain of science. It is to be hoped that future generations will be more tolerant and that they will say: ‘From the fifteenth or sixteenth century men ceased to be conscious of the existence of the spiritual world, and that one must have other perspectives in the spiritual worlds, that there, one must arrange the heavenly bodies into a different order than when one observes in a merely physical way.’ Formerly that was done, but the time came when men considered the order and regulation of the heavenly bodies only from the physical point of view. ‘We can do this also,’ will cry the men of the future, and from the sixteenth century onwards it was quite correct. ‘Men had for a time to overlook the spiritual world but then people bethought themselves again and recollected that there was a spiritual world, they then returned to the original spiritual perspective.’ It is to be hoped that the men of the future will comprehend that there also was once an astronomical Mythology, and will not look upon our times with the same disdain with which the men of the modern superstitions look upon their forefathers.
[ 16 ] We see that the Copernican system became different, simply because merely physical standpoints were taken into account in relation to it. Before that, in the Ptolemaic system, there were still remnants of a spiritual point of view. Only through taking into consideration the other system, can one form any idea of the rulership and the action of the spiritual Beings within our solar-planetary-system. We keep to physical conditions when we say: Up to the Moon the Angels exercise their power, up to Mercury the Archangels, to Venus the Spirits of Personality, up to the Sun the Powers, as far as to Mars the Mights. Then come the Beings we call the Dominions, and here lastly the Thrones. We need only draw in other lines to designate the physical system, then we have in these lines the limits of the realms of power of the Hierarchies. As regards spiritual activities it is not our Sun at all which stands in the centre of the system, but the earth. Therefore, all the ages which have regarded spiritual development as the most essential part, have said: Certainly the Sun is a far nobler heavenly body, Beings have evolved upon it who stand higher than man; but that with which evolution is concerned is man, who lives upon the earth. And when the Sun withdrew from the Earth, it did so in order that man should develop in the right way. If the Sun had remained united to the earth man could never have been able to progress at the right tempo. This was possible only because the Sun withdrew along with those Beings who could bear quite different conditions. It left the earth to itself, so to speak, so that man might find his tempo for his own development. [ 17 ] A world system grows into this or that according to the point of departure — the perspective chosen. If one asks, where is the centre of our world system, seeing in it only what the purely physical senses can observe, then it is found in the Copernican system. If one asks about the arrangement of our solar system as it depends on the regions ruled over by the spiritual Hierarchies, we must place the earth as its centre, we then get other boundary lines; the planets then become something quite different, they become limits for the region over which each spiritual Hierarchy holds sway.
[ 18 ] And now you will easily be able to see the correspondence between what has been just said about the spacial distribution of each sphere of influence, with that which has been said about the task and mission of each group of Beings.
The Beings who are nearest to the earth, who hold sway in the immediate surroundings of the earth up to the Moon, are the Angels. From that region they guide the life of each single Individual as it progresses from incarnation to incarnation.
But something more is needed in order that whole masses of nations may be distributed in accordance with their mission upon earth. A little thought will reveal that co-operation with the cosmos is here necessary. It really depends on cosmic, not earthly conditions, whether a nation has one sort of character or another. Only think how a race with different qualities, for instance in hair and in skin, acts otherwise than another race would do; here we have the interactions of conditions which must be regulated from heavenly spaces. This is done from a region whose lordship extends up to Mercury, to the boundary of the Archangel's sphere of action.
Further, when the whole of humanity as it develops upon earth has to be guided and led, this has to be effected from still wider heavenly spaces, from that which extends as far as to Venus by the Archai.
When further, the task of the earth itself has to be led and guided, this must be done from the centre of the whole system. [ 19 ] I have said that our humanity evolves through Saturn, Sun, Moon, Earth, Jupiter, Venus, and Vulcan. The Beings of the spiritual Hierarchies, who direct the mission of humanity carrying it on from one planet to another, are the Powers, the Spirits of Form. They must dwell in a very special place, they are of such a nature that their sphere of power reaches up to the Sun. The Sun already existed as a special, a particular globe alongside the ancient Moon; it is now near the earth, in the future it will be near Jupiter. Its realm of power extends beyond the single planets. Therefore the existence of the Sun must be bound up with those spiritual Beings whose realm of action also extends beyond the single planets. The Sun is a very special and perfect globe for this reason, that up to it extends that realm of power which stretches beyond the single planets.
Thus you see that in reality we do not find the outer spheres or dwelling places of the Hierarchies so much on the single planets as in the regions which are limited by the orbits of the planets. If you think of the whole surrounding space from the earth up to the Moon, it is filled with Angel-activities; and if you think of the spheres from the earth to Mercury, it is filled by the activities of the Archangels, and so on.
[ 20 ] Thus we have to do with the spheres of space; and the planets are the landmarks for realms of the spacial activities of the higher Beings. We see that a continual, progressive line of perfection is to be sought from man upwards. Man himself is chained to the earth. That eternal part of him which goes from incarnation to incarnation is guided by Beings who are not bound only to the earth, but who traverse the surrounding air and that which lies beyond it up to the Moon. And so on further.
[ 21 ] Now, man has been engaged on his evolution upon earth since primeval times, and his relationship towards his whole evolution upon earth, is exactly similar to the relationship between the small child and the grown-up person. The latter teaches the small child. It is the same as regards the Hierarchies in the cosmos. Man, who is chained to the earth, only gradually struggles through to the knowledge he needs, to the cleverness which is necessary to him upon earth. Higher Beings must teach him. What must happen so that this object can be gained? In the beginnings of the earth's existence, Beings who were otherwise not bound to the earth, had to come down from higher spheres. And that really happened. Beings who otherwise needed only to live in the surroundings of the earth had to come down so as to communicate to men what they already knew as the older, more perfect members of the Hierarchies. They had to incarnate into human bodies, not for their own development, for they did not need it, just as a grown-up man does not study the A.B.C. for his own progress, but so as to teach it to these small children. Hence, we look back into old Atlantean and old Lemurian times, when Beings descended from the surrounding realms of the earth to which they belonged and incarnated in human bodies and became the teachers of mankind. These are Beings who belonged to higher Hierarchies, to Mercury and Venus. The sons of Venus and of Mercury descended from above and became the teachers of young humanity, so that these men, wandering in the midst of that young humanity, really represented Maya or illusion. There have been such men. Let us suppose, in order to explain it more precisely: some normally developed man of the Lemurian times met such a man. Externally he did not appear very different from others, but a spirit had entered into him whose realm extended as far as Mercury or Venus. Thus, the exterior of such a man represented in reality Maya, an illusion. He looked like other men, but he was something quite different: he was a son of Mercury, or of Venus. In the early dawn of humanity there were such apparitions. The sons of Mercury or of Venus came down and wandered among men, so that they now received within them the character of the Beings of Mercury and Venus. We have said that the Beings of Venus are the Spirits of Personality. Such Beings walked the earth as men, being outwardly limited to narrow human personalities, but who with their mighty power guided humanity. These were the great conditions of lordship in Lemurian times, when sons of Venus guided the whole of humanity. The sons of Mercury guided parts of humanity. They were as powerful as those are now whom we call spirits of nations or of race.
[ 22 ] Maya or illusion does not only exist in the world but also as regards men. A man as he stands before us can have an external appearance which is a truth, which corresponds precisely to his soul; or else it may be a Maya; he has in reality a task, which corresponds to the task of the sons of Mercury or of the sons of Venus. This is what is meant, when it is said, that fundamentally the great guiding individualities of ancient times as they walked the earth with their ordinary names, represented a Maya, and that was what H. P. Blavatsky meant when she pointed out that the Buddhas represented Maya. You can find this very word in the Secret Doctrine. These things are derived in every respect from the teachings of the holy Mysteries: we have only to understand them.
[ 23 ] We are now obliged to ask: How does it happen then that such a son of Venus descends to us? How does it happen that a Bodhisattva can live upon earth? The Being of a Bodhisattva, the Being of a son of Mercury, forms an important chapter in the evolution of our earth which has to do with its connexion to the Cosmos itself. Therefore, tomorrow we shall have to consider the nature of the sons of Mercury and of Venus, of the Bodhisattva or Dhyani-buddhas.
Sechster Vortrag
[ 1 ] Wir haben nun gestern gesehen, wie aus dem geistigen Leben der über dem Menschen stehenden Wesenheiten die Tatsachen des Kosmos hervorgehen. Und insbesondere eine solche Erscheinung wie diejenige, die wir gestern zum Schluß anführen konnten, der Streit am Himmel, der sozusagen auf dem Schlachtfelde zwischen Jupiter und Mars so viele Leichen zurückgelassen hat, daß sie als Planetoiden heute noch immer in größerer und größerer Zahl von der physischen Wissenschaft gefunden werden, gerade eine solche Erscheinung muß uns von ganz besonderer Wichtigkeit sein. Und wir werden auf dieselbe noch zurückzukommen haben; wir werden sehen, wie sich diese Erscheinung am Himmel auch spiegelt in gewissen Vorgängen der Erdenentwickelung, und wir werden gerade im Anfang der Bhagavad Gita die irdische Spiegelung dieses Streites am Himmel finden.
[ 2 ] Heute aber wollen wir unsere Betrachtung in der Weise fortsetzen, daß wir auch noch zunächst skizzenhaft beschreiben die anderen Wesenheiten der geistigen Hierarchien, auf die wir zwar schon hingedeutet haben, die wir aber gestern wegließen. Das sind die Wesenheiten, die eigentlich, wenn wir aufsteigen vom Menschen hinauf, dem Menschen am nächsten liegen; die in der christlichen Esoterik genannt werden Engel, Erzengel und Urbeginne oder Urkräfte, also Angeloi, Archangeloi, Archai. Die Erzengel werden ja gemäß der anthroposophischen Literatur auch Feuergeister zu nennen sein, und die Urbeginne können wir auch nennen Geister der Persönlichkeit.
[ 3 ] Diese Wesenheiten, die sozusagen zwischendrinnen stehen zwischen dem Menschen und jenen geistigen Wesenheiten, von denen wir gestern gezeigt haben, wie sie hereinreichen zum Jupiter, Mars und so weiter, stehen natürlich auch in einem näheren Verhältnis zum Menschen auf der Erde selber. Da haben wir zunächst die Angeloi oder Engel. Sie haben ihre Menschheitsstufe während der alten Mondenentwickelung durchgemacht, sind also im Grunde genommen während unserer heutigen Erdenentwickelung erst so weit, als der Mensch sein wird während seiner Jupiterentwickelung. Eine Stufe über dem Menschen stehen sie. Was ist denn eigentlich die Aufgabe dieser geistigen Wesenheiten? Wir werden uns diese Aufgabe vor Augen führen können, wenn wir die Entwickelung des Menschen auf der Erde in Betracht ziehen.
[ 4 ] Der Mensch entwickelt sich von Verkörperung zu Verkörperung. In der Weise, wie jetzt die menschliche Entwickelung vor sich geht, reicht sie ja zurück durch die alte atlantische Zeit, durch die lemurische Zeit und beginnt eigentlich in der alten lemurischen Zeit. Und diese Entwickelung durch Inkarnationen hindurch wird auch noch längere Zeit anhalten, bis gegen das Ende der Erdenentwickelung, wo dann andere Formen der Menschheitsentwickelung eintreten werden. Nun wissen Sie ja, daß dasjenige, was wir den eigentlichen ewigen Wesenskern des Menschen nennen, die Individualität, sich fortsetzt von Inkarnation zu Inkarnation. Sie wissen aber auch, daß für die weitaus größte Anzahl der Menschen heute noch ein Bewußtsein vom Leben in den vorhergehenden Verkörperungen nicht vorhanden ist, daß die Menschen sich heute noch nicht erinnern an dasjenige, was sich mitihnen vollzogen hat in vorhergehenden Inkarnationen. Nur solche, die bis zu einem gewissen Grade bis zur Hellsichtigkeit sich entwickelt haben, blicken zurück in ihre vorhergehenden Inkarnationen.
[ 5 ] Was würde nun für eine Zusammengehörigkeit sein zwischen den Inkarnationen eines Menschen auf der Erde, der sich noch nicht erinnert an seine früheren Verkörperungen, wenn nicht gewisse Wesenheiten da wären, die sozusagen die einzelnen Inkarnationen zusammenschließen, die da wachen über das Fortentwickeln von einer Inkarnation zur anderen? Für jeden Menschen müssen wir voraussetzen eine Wesenheit, welche dadurch, daß sie um eine Stufe höher ist als der Mensch, die Individualität von einer Inkarnation zur andern hinüberleitet. Wohlgemerkt, das sind nicht jene Wesenheiten, die das Karma regeln und auf die wir noch zurückkommen werden; das sind einfach wachsame Wesenheiten, die sozusagen das Gedächtnis bewahren von einer Inkarnation zur anderen, solange der Mensch selber es nicht kann. Und diese Wesenheiten sind eben die Angeloi oder Engel. So daß wir sagen können: Jeder Mensch ist in jeder Inkarnation eine Persönlichkeit, aber über jeden Menschen wacht eine Wesenheit, welche ein Bewußtsein hat, das von Inkarnation zu Inkarnation geht. Das ist es ja auch, was möglich macht, daß für gewisse niedrigere Grade der Einweihung der Mensch, wenn er auch selbst noch nichts weiß von seinen vorhergehenden Verkörperungen, doch die Möglichkeit erhält, seinen Engel zu fragen. Das ist für gewisse niedere Grade der Initiation durchaus möglich. So also dürfen wir sagen: Die Wesen, die als Angeloi eine Stufe höher stehen als der Mensch, die haben Wache zu halten über den ganzen Menschheitsfaden, der sich für die einzelne Individualität von Verkörperung zu Verkörperung spinnt. Nun steigen wir hinauf zu der nächsten Gruppe von Wesenheiten, zu den Erzengeln, Archangeloi, zu den Feuergeistern, wie wir sie auch nennen. Diese Wesenheiten beschäftigen sich nun nicht mit dem einzelnen Menschen, mit der einzelnen Individualität, sondern haben schon eine umfassendere Aufgabe: Sie bringen in eine harmonische Ordnung das Leben des Einzelnen und das Leben größerer Menschheitszusammenhänge, wie zum Beispiel Völker, Rassen und so weiter. Es haben die Erzengel innerhalb unserer Erdenentwickelung die Aufgabe, sozusagen die Seele des Einzelnen in einen gewissen Zusammenhang zu bringen mit dem, was wir Volksseele, Rassenseele nennen. Denn für denjenigen, der in das spirituelle Wissen eindringt, sind Volksseelen, Rassenseelen noch etwas ganz anderes als für die Abstraktlinge der heutigen Wissenschaft oder heutigen Bildung überhaupt. Auf irgendeinem Territorium, meinetwillen in Deutschland oder Frankreich oder Italien, leben so und so viele Menschen, und weil diesinnlichen Augen nursound so vieleMenschenalsäußere Gestalten sehen, so können sich solche Abstraktlinge das, was man Volksgeist oder Volksseele nennt, nur wie eine bloß begriffliche Zusammenfassung des Volkes vorstellen. Wirklich real ist für sie nur der einzelne Mensch, nicht die Volksseele, nicht der Volksgeist. Für denjenigen, der in das wirkliche Getriebe des spirituellen Lebens hineinschaut, für den ist das, was wir Volksseele oder Volksgeist nennen, eine Realität. Es lebtund webtin einer Volksseele dasjenige, was wir nennen einen Feuergeist oder einen Erzengel. Er regelt also sozusagen das Verhältnis des einzelnen Menschen zu der Gesamtheit eines Volkes oder einer Rasse.
[ 6 ] Und dann kommen wir hinauf zu den Wesenheiten, die wir bezeichnen als Geister der Persönlichkeit, als Urbeginne, Urkräfte, Archai. Das sind nun noch höhere Wesenheiten, sie haben eine noch höhere Aufgabe im Menschheitszusammenhange. Sie regeln im Grunde genommen die irdischen Verhältnisse des ganzen Menschengeschlechtes auf Erden, und sie leben so, daß sie durch die Wellen der Zeit von Epoche zu Epoche in einer ganz bestimmten Zeitsich verändern, sozusagen einen andern Geistleib annehmen. Sie alle kennen wiederum etwas, was für die Abstraktlinge unserer heutigen Bildung eigentlich ein bloßer Begriff ist, was aber für denjenigen, der hineinsieht in die spirituelle Wirklichkeit, eine Realität ist: Es ist das, was man mit einem eigentlich recht häßlichen Ausdruck unserer Zeit den Zeitgeist nennen könnte. Sie haben zu tun mit dem, was der Sinn und die Mission einer Epoche der Menschheit ist. Denken Sie nur einmal daran, daß wir ja schildern können den Sinn und die Mission zum Beispiel in den ersten Jahrtausenden unmittelbar nach der atlantischen Katastrophe. Diese Zeitgeister, sie umfassen etwas, was über das einzelne Volk, über die einzelne Rasse hinausgeht. Der Geist einer Epoche ist nicht beschränkt auf dieses oder jenes Volk, er geht hinüber über die Grenze der Völker. Das nun, was man in Wirklichkeit Zeitgeist, Geist einer Epoche nennt, das ist der Geistleib der Archai, der Urbeginne oder Geister der Persönlichkeit. Diesen Geistern der Persönlichkeit ist es zum Beispiel zuzuschreiben, daß für gewisse Epochen ganz bestimmte menschliche Persönlichkeiten auf unserem Erdenrund auftreten. Nicht wahr, Sie begreifen ja, daß die irdischen Aufgaben zunächst gelöst werden müssen durch irdische Persönlichkeiten. In einer ganz bestimmten Epoche mußte diese oder jene epochemachende Persönlichkeit auftreten. Aber es würde ein sonderbares Durcheinander in der ganzen Erdenentwikkelung eintreten, wenn das alles dem Zufall überlassen wäre, wenn in irgendeine Epoche Luther meinetwegen oder Karl der Große hineingestellt würden. Das muß im Zusammenhang gedacht werden erst mit der ganzen Entwickelung der Menschheit über die Erde hin; es muß sozusagen aus dem Sinn der ganzen Erdenentwickelung in einer bestimmten Epoche die richtige Seele auftreten. Das regeln die Geister der Persönlichkeit, das regeln die Archai oder Urbeginne.
[ 7 ] Und dann, wenn wir über die Urbeginne hinaufkommen, dann kommen wir zu denjenigen Wesenheiten, die wir gestern gerade noch berührt haben, zu den sogenannten Gewalten, Exusiai, die wir auch nennen die Geister der Form. Da kommen wir allerdings zu Aufgaben, die schon über die Erde hinausgehen. Wir unterscheiden ja in der Menschheitsentwickelung eine Saturnentwickelung, eine Sonnenentwickelung, eine Monden-, eine Erden-, Jupiter-, Venus- und Vulkanentwickelung. Von dem allem, was innerhalb der Erde selbst geschieht, haben wir jetzt gesehen, daß es geregelt wird durch Engel für den einzelnen Menschen, durch Erzengel für den Zusammenhalt des einzelnen Menschen mit großen Menschenmassen; für die ganze Menschheitsentwickelung von der lemurischen Zeit bis hin in die Zeit, wo der Mensch wiederum so weit vergeistigt sein wird, daß er kaum noch der Erde angehört, wird alles geregelt durch die Geister der Persönlichkeit. Jetzt aber muß noch etwas anderes geregelt werden: Es muß die Menschheit von einem planetarischen Zustand zum andern geführt werden. Es müssen auch geistige Wesenheiten da sein, die während der ganzen Erdenentwickelung dafür sorgen, daß dann, wenn die Erdenentwickelung fertig sein wird, die Menschheit in der richtigen Weise wiederum durch ein Pralaya durchgehen kann und den Weg findet zum nächsten Ziel, zum Jupiterziel. Das sind die Gewalten oder Geister der Form. Wir haben gestern von oben herunter ihre Aufgabe charakterisiert, jetzt charakterisieren wir sie von unten hinauf. Diejenigen Geister, die dafür sorgen, daß sozusagen die ganze Menschheit von einem planetarischen Zustand zum andern geführt wird, das sind die Gewalten, Exusiai oder Geister der Form.
[ 8 ] Nun müssen wir uns einmal über die Weltstellung dieser Wesenheiten einen gewissen Aufschluß verschaffen. In der Geisteswissenschaft, in demjenigen, was sich heute wieder fortsetzen soll als Anthroposophie, also im Grunde genommen in der Mysterienweisheit, hat man immer in derselben Weise, wie das jetzt vor Ihnen geschehen ist, von diesen verschiedenen Wesenheiten der geistigen Hierarchien gesprochen. Wir haben nun gestern gesehen, daß der heutige Saturn die Marke bedeutet, bis zu welcher die Throne hereingewirkt haben, daß der Jupiter die Marke bedeutet, bis zu welcher die Herrschaften gewirkt haben, und der Mars die Marke, bis zu welcher die Mächte oder Dynamis oder Virtutes gewirkt haben.
[ 9 ] Nun wollen wir einmal auch in entsprechender Weise charakterisieren, wie sich räumlich sozusagen die Herrschaftsgebiete der heute genannten Wesenheiten in unserem Sonnensystem verteilen. Da muß eine Sache berührt werden, die vielleicht selbst unter Ihnen, die Sie in gewisser Beziehung schon vorbereitet sind, einiges Befremden hervorrufen wird, die aber doch durchaus mit der Wahrheit übereinstimmt. Sehen Sie, im heutigen Schulunterricht werden die Leute darauf hingewiesen, daß man einmal im grauen Altertum bis herein zu Kopernikus eine Weltanschauung über unser Sonnensystem gehabt hat, die bekannt ist unter dem Namen Ptolemäisches Weltensystem. Damals hat man geglaubt, die Erde stünde im Mittelpunkt unseres Systems, und es bewegten sich, wie es grob sinnlich für das Auge aussieht, die Planeten um die Erde herum. Seit Kopernikus weiß man endlich, so sagt man, was früher eben die Menschen nicht gewußt haben, daß nämlich die Sonne im Mittelpunkt steht und daß die Planeten in Kreisen respektive in Ellipsen sich um die Sonne herumbewegen. Schön! Aber das, was bei einer solchen Beschreibung unseres Sonnensystems vor allen Dingen den Leuten ganz präzis klargemacht werden sollte, wenn man aufrichtig und ehrlich im heutigen Sinne solch eine Sache vorträgt, das ist noch etwas anderes. Man sollte sagen: Bis zu Kopernikus kannten die Leute nur gewisse Bewegungsformen am Himmelsraum, und danach berechneten sie, wie unser Sonnensystem sein könnte; das, was Kopernikus getan hat, das war nun nicht, daß er sozusagen einen Stuhl genommen und sich hinausgesetzt hat in den Weltenraum, um zuzuschauen, wie die Sonne in irgendeinem Mittelpunkt von Kreis oder Ellipse steht und sich die Planeten herumbewegen, sondern er hat eine Rechnung angestellt, und diese Rechnung erklärt einfacher dasjenige, was man sieht, als frühere Rechnungen. Das Kopernikanische Weltensystem ist nichts anderes als ein Ergebnis des Gedankens.
[ 10 ] Sehen wir einmal ab von dem, was Ptolemäus angenommen hat. Setzen wir die Rechnung so, daß die Sonne im Mittelpunkt steht, rechnen wir aus, wo die Orte für die einzelnen Planeten sein müssen, und suchen dann, ob das mit der Erfahrung übereinstimmt. Gewiß, für die bloß physische Beobachtung stimmt das mit der Erfahrung zunächst überein. Freilich hat man dann allerlei Weltensysteme, zum Beispiel das Kant-Laplacesche, darauf gebaut. Aber da kam man schon in eine Sache hinein mit den fortgehenden Entdeckungen, die im Grunde genommen nicht mehr ganz wissenschaftlich ehrlich ist, denn später wurden für die rein sinnliche Beobachtung zwei Planeten hinzugesellt — wir haben sie noch nicht berührt, wir werden aber später zeigen, was sie für unser Sonnensystem bedeuten, der Uranus und der Neptun. Man müßte allerdings, wenn man dieses Weltensystem beschreibt, die Leute wiederum aufmerksam machen darauf, daß eigentlich diese beiden, der Uranus und der Neptun, einen gewaltigen Strich durch die Rechnung machen.
[ 11 ] Wenn man das Kant-Laplacesche Weltensystem schon einmal annehmen will, so müßten sich der Uranus und der Neptun so bewegen mit ihren Monden, wie zum Beispiel die andern Monde um die andern Planeten sich bewegen. So tun sie es aber nicht, sondern da haben wir sogar unter diesen äußeren Planeten, unter diesen später gefundenen Planeten einen, der sich ganz sonderbar benimmt. Für den müßte nämlich eigentlich, wenn das Kant-Laplacesche Weltensystem richtig ist, irgend jemand, nachdem sich die ganzen Planeten abgespalten haben, die Achse so gedreht haben, daß sie um neunzig Grad gedreht wäre, denn er macht einen andern Kreislauf als die anderen Planeten. Diese zwei unterscheiden sich erheblich von den übrigen Planeten unseres Sonnensystems. Wir werden später sehen, wie es sich mit ihnen verhält; jetzt soll nur darauf aufmerksam gemacht werden, daß man es in dem kopernikanischen System nur mit einer Rechnung zu tun hat, mit etwas, was man hypothetisch, als Voraussetzung, hingestellt hat in der Zeit, wo man vollständig abkam von einer Erkenntnis der geistigen Zusammenhänge, von einer Beobachtung dessen, was geistig dem äußeren Geschehen zugrunde liegt. Aber das alte Ptolemäische System ist eben kein bloß physisches System, es ist ein System, das noch zurückgeht auf die geistige Beobachtung, wo man gewußt hat, daß die Planeten Marken sind für gewisse Herrschaftsgebiete der höheren Wesenheiten. Und man muß das ganze System unseres Planeten-Sonnen-Systems anders aufzeichnen, wenn man nun die Herrschaftsgebiete in entsprechender Weise charakterisieren will. Ich werde Ihnen dieses Planetensystem so aufzeichnen, wie es erklärt worden ist in den Mysterien des Zarathustra. Wir könnten ebensogut andere Mysterien zu Rate ziehen, aber wir wollen gerade dieses System herausgreifen für die Charakteristik unseres Sonnensystems mit seinen Planeten in bezug auf die innerhalb dieses Systems wirkenden geistigen Wesenheiten.
[ 12 ] In dem System des Zarathustra war nämlich etwas aufgenommen, was sich unterscheidet von demjenigen, was unsere Himmelsbeobachtungen sind. Sie wissen ja, daß man einen gewissen — nennen Sie ihn nun scheinbar oder anders-, einen gewissen Fortgang der Sonne durch den Tierkreis im Laufe langer Jahre beobachten kann. Es wird gewöhnlich gesagt, und das ist richtig, daß ungefähr seit dem 8. Jahrhundert vor unserer Zeitrechnung die Sonne im Frühjahr aufgeht im Frühlingspunkt im Tierkreiszeichen 1Hier und im folgenden sind nicht die Zeichen im üblichen Sinn, sondern die Bilder gemeint. des Widders; aber jedes Jahr rückt die Sonne ein Stückchen weiter, so daß sie im Verlauf von langen, langen Zeiträumen den ganzen Widder durchläuft mit ihrem Aufgangspunkt. Vor dem Jahre 800 vor unserer Zeitrechnung ging sie nun nicht im Widder, sondern im Stier auf, und zwar ging sie durch 2200 Jahre etwa im Stier auf, durchwanderte also mit ihrem Frühlingspunkt das ganze Tierkreiszeichen des Stieres. Noch vorher ging sie auf im Tierkreiszeichen der Zwillinge. Die Zwillinge waren das Frühjahrs-Tierkreisgestirn in den Zeiten, die also 800 plus etwa 2200 Jahre vor unserer Zeitrechnung liegen. Wenn wir also ins 4. und 5. Jahrtausend vor Christus zurückgehen, so haben wir den Frühlingspunkt zu verlegen in das Tierkreiszeichen der Zwillinge. Das war aber die Zeit, in der die Mysterien des Zarathustra geblüht haben. Weit hinein in ein graues Altertum haben sie geblüht, und man rechnete, wenn man sprach von den Erscheinungen am Himmel, alles mit Bezug auf das Sternbild der Zwillinge. So daß, wenn wir den Tierkreis, wie wir ihn ja schon gestern charakterisiert haben, aufzeichnen würden, wir hier oben zu zeichnen hätten das Sternbild der Zwillinge. Es würde dann zu zeichnen sein im unmittelbaren Anschluß an den Tierkreis das, was das Herrschaftsgebiet der Throne begrenzt, was also zur Grenzmarke den Saturn hat. Dann kommen wir dazu, zu begrenzen, wie wir gesagt haben, das Herrschaftsgebiet derjenigen geistigen Wesenheiten, die man nennt die Herrschaften oder Geister der Weisheit; die äußerste Marke ist der Jupiter. Wir kommen dann dazu, zu begrenzen das Herrschaftsgebiet der Mächte, auch die Geister der Bewegung genannt: Das ist das Herrschaftsgebiet, das zur Marke den Mars hat. Wir haben gesehen, zwischenherein fällt das Schlachtfeld, das der Streit am Himmel gelassen hat. Jetzt aber müssen wir, wenn wir die Herrschaftsgebiete richtig abteilen wollen, dasjenige zeichnen, was zur Grenzmarke die Sonne hat. Also, ebenso wie wir den Mars aufzeichnen als die Grenze, bis wohin das Herrschaftsgebiet der Mächte geht, müssen wir die Sonne selber aufzeichnen als die Marke, die die Grenze bezeichnet, bis zu der die Gewalten oder Geister der Form gehen. Und nunmehr kommen wir zu der Grenze, welche wir bezeichnen durch die Marke der Venus. Bis zur Venus reicht das Herrschaftsgebiet der Geister der Persönlichkeit oder Archai. Dann kommen wir zu dem Herrschaftsgebiete, das wir bezeichnen mit der Marke des Merkur. Also bis hier herein, zur Venus, reicht das Herrschaftsgebiet der Geister der Persönlichkeit; bis hierher, zum Merkur, reicht das Herrschaftsgebiet derjenigen Wesenheiten, die wir die Erzengel oder Feuergeister nennen. Und jetzt kommen wir der Erde schon sehr nahe. Wir können jetzt das Herrschaftsgebiet bezeichnen, welches. zu seiner Marke den Mond hat, und kommen jetzt dazu, hierher die Erde zu zeichnen.
[ 13 ] Sie müssen sich also denken die Erde als Ausgangspunkt, müssen sich denken um die Erde herum ein Herrschaftsgebiet, das bis zum Mond reicht; dann kommt ein Herrschaftsgebiet, das bis zum Merkur reicht, dann ein Herrschaftsgebiet bis zur Venus, dann eines bis zur Sonne. Nun werden Sie erstaunt sein über die Reihenfolge der einzelnen Planeten, so wie ich sie gegeben habe. Wenn hier die Erde und hier die Sonne ist, so würden Sie glauben, daß ich hierher zeichnen müßte den Merkur in Sonnennähe und hierher die Venus. Das ist aber nicht richtig, denn die beiden Planeten wurden in bezug auf ihre Namen verwechselt durch die spätere Astronomie. Was man heute Merkur nennt, wird in allen alten Lehren Venus genannt, und was man heute Venus nennt, heißt in allen alten Lehren Merkur. Also wohlgemerkt: Man versteht die alten Schriften und die alten Lehren nicht, wenn man dasjenige, was dort über Venus oder Merkur gesagt ist, auf das bezieht, was heute mit denselben Namen gemeint ist. Was über die Venus gesagt wird, muß auf den heutigen Merkur bezogen werden, und was über den Merkur gesagt wird, auf die Venus, denn diese beiden Bezeichnungen sind später miteinander verwechselt worden. Bei der Gelegenheit, wo man das Weltensystem umgedreht hat, wo die Erde entkleidet worden ist ihrer Mittelpunktsstellung, da hat man nicht bloß die Perspektive geändert, sondern man hat Merkur und Venus umeinander herumkollern lassen in bezug auf die alten Bezeichnungen.
[ 14 ] Nun werden Sie sehr leicht das, was da aufgezeichnet ist, in Einklang bringen können mit dem physischen Weltensystem. Sie brauchen sich nur zu denken: Hier ist die Sonne ☉, um die Sonne dreht sich die Venus ♀ ; weiter um die Sonne dreht sich der Merkur ☿, dann die Erde ♁ mit dem Mond ☾; es drehen sich herum Mars ♂, Jupiter ♃, dann Saturn ♄. Sie müssen sich die physischen Bewegungen so denken, daß sich jeder Planet um die Sonne bewegt. Aber Sie können sich doch eine solche Stellung denken, daß sozusagen die Erde hier steht und daß sich die andern Planeten so gedreht haben, daß sie hinter der Sonne stehen auf ihrem Weg. Also wenn ich das zeichnen will, so wäre es so: Wir zeichnen unser gewöhnliches physisches System auf. Wir zeichnen in den einen Brennpunkt die Sonne, lassen herumgehen um die Sonne Venus, Merkur, Erde mit ihrem Mond: Das ist die Erde, Merkur, Venus nach der alten Bezeichnung, der nächste, der folgt, ist der Mars, der nächste, nach den Planetoiden, Jupiter, und dann kommt Saturn. Sie denken es sich nun so, daß, während da unten die Erde steht, dann Merkur und Venus kommen, daß dann der Mars da oben steht, daß der Jupiter da steht und so weiter. Jetzt haben Sie die Sonne, den [heutigen] Merkur, die heutige Venus hier. Nicht wahr, da diese Planeten alle möglichen Lagen gegeneinander einnehmen, so können sie doch auch einmal so stehen (siehe Zeichnung S5. 101, unten). Das wird plausibel sein. Hiermit ist das gegenwärtige physische System gezeichnet, es ist nur ein Zeitpunkt gewählt, wo, wenn die Erde, der Merkur und die Venus auf der einen Seite der Sonne stehen, die anderen Planeten Mars, Jupiter und Saturn auf der anderen Seite stehen. Das ist hier gezeichnet, weiter gar nichts. Hier ist Erde, Merkur, Venus, und auf der anderen Seite der Sonne Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Also es handelt sich nur um eine Perspektivenänderung. Dieses System ist durchaus zu denken, aber nur, wenn diese Konstellation da ist. Sie war tatsächlich da in einer Zeit, in der oberhalb des Saturn die Zwillinge waren. Da konnte man nun hellseherisch besonders gut beobachten die Herrschaftsverhältnisse der geistigen Hierarchien. Da zeigte sich denn, daß rings um die Erde herum bis zum Mond die Sphäre der Engel ist. Wirklich, wenn man nicht das physische System zugrunde legt, sondern diese eigentümliche Konstellation, dann ist um die Erde der Kreis der Engel bis zum Mond, dann weiter bis zum Merkur der Kreis der Erzengel, dann bis zur Venus der Kreis der Geister der Persönlichkeit, bis zur Sonne zunächst der Kreis der Gewalten oder Exusiai oder Geister der Form; dann kommt der Kreis, wie ich ihn charakterisiert habe gestern, der Virtutes oder Mächte, dann der Kreis der Herrschaften und dann derjenige der Throne (siehe Zeichnung).
[ 15 ] Also wenn man vom Kopernikanischen und Ptolemäischen Weltensystem spricht, so handelt es sich darum, daß man klar ist darüber, daß im Ptolemäischerr System etwas zurückgeblieben ist von der Konstellation der waltenden Geister, und da muß man die Erde als Anfangspunkt der Perspektive nehmen. Es wird eine Zukunft kommen, da wird dieses Weltensystem wieder richtig sein, weil der Mensch wieder wissen wird von der geistigen Welt. Hoffentlich werden dann die Menschen weniger fanatisch sein als unsere Gegenwart. Unsere Gegenwart sagt: Die Leute vor Kopernikus haben alle Unsinn geredet, haben alle ein primitives Weltensystem gehabt. Seit Kopernikus wissen wir endlich das richtige, und alles andere ist falsch, und bis in die unendlichsten Zeiten hinein, und wenn es Jahrmillionen wären, wird natürlich, weil das Kopernikanische System das richtige ist, immer dieses gelehrt werden. - So ungefähr denken und reden die Menschen der Gegenwart. Es gab kaum jemals eine so abergläubische Bevölkerung, als die gegenwärtigen astronomischen Theoretiker sind, und es gab kaum jemals einen so großen Fanatismus, als er gerade auf diesem Gebiet herrscht. Zukünftige Generationen werden hoffentlich toleranter sein und werden sagen: Vom 15., 16. Jahrhundert an haben die Menschen das Bewußtsein verloren gehabt, daß es eine geistige Welt gibt und daß man in der geistigen Welt andere Perspektiven hat, daß man da die Himmelskörper anders anordnen muß, als wenn man sie bloß physisch beobachtet. Vorher war das vorhanden, nachher kam die Zeit, in welcher die Menschen nur physisch die Anordnung der Himmelskörper betrachteten. Schön, das kann man auch, werden die Menschen der Zukunft sagen, vom 16. Jahrhundert ab war das ganz richtig. Die Menschen mußten eine Weile absehen von alledem, was in der geistigen Welt ist, aber dann haben sie sich wieder besonnen, die Menschen, darauf, daß es eine geistige Welt gibt, dann sind sie wieder zurückgekommen zu der ursprünglichen spirituellen Perspektive. - Die Menschen der Zukunft werden hoffentlich begreifen, daß einmal auch die astronomische Mythologie möglich war, nicht nur andere Mythologien, und werden nicht mit derselben Geringschätzigkeit auf unsere Zeit blicken, wie die Menschen der Gegenwart in ihrem Aberglauben auf ihre Vorfahren schauen.
[ 16 ] Wir sehen also, daß das Kopernikanische Weltensystem einfach deshalb ein anderes geworden ist, weil bloß physische Anschauungen dabei zu Rate gezogen worden sind. Vorher waren geistige Anschauungen noch als Reste geblieben im Ptolemäischen Weltensystem. Aber nur dadurch, daß man dieses andere Weltensystem in Betracht zieht, kann man sich überhaupt eine Vorstellung machen von dem Walten und Wirken der geistigen Wesenheiten innerhalb unseres Sonnen-Planeten-Systems. Da halten wir die geistigen Verhältnisse fest, indem wir sagen: Eben bis zum Mond walten die Engel, bis zum Merkur die Erzengel, bis zur Venus die Geister der Persönlichkeit, bis zur Sonne die Gewalten, bis zum Mars die Mächte. Hier kommen dann die Wesenheiten, die wir nennen Herrschaften, und hier endlich die Throne. Wir brauchen also bloß in das physische System andere Linien hineinzuzeichnen, dann haben wir in diesen Linien die Herrschaftsbereiche der Hierarchien abgegrenzt. Für die geistigen Wirksamkeiten steht eben gar nicht unsere Sonne im Mittelpunkt des Systems, sondern die Erde. Daher haben alle Zeiten, in denen man das Wesentliche in die geistige Entwickelung gelegt hat, gesagt: Gewiß, die Sonne ist meinetwillen ein vornehmerer Himmelskörper, auf ihm sind Wesenheiten entwickelt, die höher stehen als der Mensch; aber worauf es ankommt in der Entwickelung, das ist der Mensch, der auf der Erde lebt. Und wenn sich die Sonne getrennt hat, so hat sie es deshalb getan, damit der Mensch in der richtigen Weise sich fortentwickeln kann. Würde die Sonne mit der Erde vereinigt geblieben sein, so hätte der Mensch niemals im richtigen Tempo vorwärts kommen können. Das war nur möglich dadurch, daß die Sonne mit denjenigen Wesenheiten, die ganz andere Verhältnisse vertragen, weggegangen ist. Sie hat die Erde sozusagen für sich allein gelassen, damit dann der Mensch sein Tempo der Entwickelung einschlagen konnte.
[ 17 ] Ein Weltensystem wird so oder so, je nachdem man den Ausgangspunkt, die Perspektive, wählt. Fragt man sich innerhalb unseres Weltensystems, wo der Mittelpunkt liegt in bezug auf das, was rein physische Sinne sehen können, dann Kopernikanisches Weltensystem! Fragt man nach der Anordnung unseres Sonnensystems, welche von den Herrschaftsgebieten der geistigen Hierarchien ausgeht, dann müssen wir noch immer die Erde in den Mittelpunkt stellen, dann bekommen wir andere Grenzlinien, dann sind die Planeten etwas ganz anderes, nämlich Grenzmarken für die Herrschaftsgebiete der einzelnen geistigen Hierarchien.
[ 18 ] Und nunmehr werden Sie leicht das, was eben gesagt worden ist über die räumliche Verteilung der einzelnen Herrschaftsgebiete, in Zusammenhang bringen können mit dem, was vorhin über die Aufgabe und Mission der einzelnen Wesenheiten gesagt worden ist. Diejeniigen Wesenheiten, die der Erde am nächsten sind, die sozusagen im unmittelbaren Umkreis der Erde wirken bis zum Mond hinauf, das sind die Engel. Von diesem Gebiete aus lenken sie das Leben der einzelnen Individualität, wie sie durchgeht von Inkarnation zu Inkarnation. Dagegen bedarf es mehr, um ganze Völkermassen auf der Erde in entsprechender Weise zu verteilen und ihnen ihre Mission zuzuteilen. Daß da der Weltenraum mitwirken muß, kann Ihnen eine einfache Überlegung zeigen. Nicht wahr, es hängt wirklich nicht bloß von irdischen, sondern von kosmischen Verhältnissen ab, ob irgendeine Bevölkerung so oder so in ihrem Charakter veranlagt ist. Denken Sie nur daran, daß eine Rasse mit anderen, sagen wir, Hautund Haarverhältnissen anders wirkt als eine andere Rasse - da wirken kosmische Verhältnisse mit, Verhältnisse, die aus dem Himmelsraum herunter geregelt werden müssen, wirken mit. Das geschieht aus einem Herrschaftsgebiet, das bis zum Merkur, bis zur Grenze der Erzengel-Wirksamkeit geht. Und dann, wenn die ganze Menschheit, wie sie auf der Erde sich entwickelt, gelenkt und geleitet werden soll, dann muß das aus noch weiterem Weltenraum herein geschehen, aus einem Weltenraum, der bis hinauf zur Venus reicht. Wenn nunmehr aber gelenkt und geleitet werden soll die Aufgabe der Erde selber, dann muß das vom Mittelpunkt des ganzen Systems heraus geschehen.
[ 19 ] Ich habe Ihnen gesagt: Unsere Menschheit entwickelt sich durch Saturn, Sonne, Mond, Erde, Jupiter, Venus und Vulkan. Die Wesenheiten der geistigen Hierarchie, die von einem Planeten zum andern hinüber die Menschheitsmission dirigieren, das sind die Gewalten, die Geister der Form. Die müssen an einem auserlesenen Platz sein; sie sind eben so, daß ihr Herrschaftsgebiet bis hinauf zur Sonne geht. Die Sonne war ja schon da als ein besonderer Körper neben dem alten Mond, sie ist jetzt wieder da neben der Erde, wird auch noch neben dem Jupiter sein. Ihr Herrschaftsgebiet geht über den einzelnen Planeten hinaus. Daher muß das Dasein der Sonne verbunden sein mit denjenigen geistigen Wesenheiten, deren Herrschaftsgebiet auch hinausgeht über den einzelnen Planeten. Insofern ist also die Sonne allerdings ein ausgezeichneter Körper, daß bis zu ihr jenes Herrschaftsgebiet geht, das sich erstreckt über den einzelnen Planeten hinaus. So sehen Sie, daß wir eigentlich den äußeren Raumkreis, den äußeren Wohnort der Hierarchien finden nicht so sehr auf den einzelnen Planeten, als in den Kreisen, die durch die Planeten begrenzt werden wie durch Marken. Wenn Sie sich den ganzen Umkreis denken von der Erde bis zum Mond, so ist er ausgefüllt mit Engelwirksamkeit, und den Umkreis von der Erde bis zum Merkur, so ist er ausgefüllt mit der Wirksamkeit der Erzengel und so weiter.
[ 20 ] Also wir haben es mit Raumsphären zu tun, und die Planeten sind die Marken, die Grenzsteine für diese Raumwirksamkeiten der höheren Wesenheiten. Wir sehen also, daß sozusagen eine fortgehende Linie der Vollkommenheit zu suchen ist vom Menschen nach aufwärts. Der Mensch selber ist an die Erde gefesselt; dasjenige, was als Ewiges von einer Inkarnation zur andern geht, wird gelenkt von Wesenheiten, die nicht nur an die Erde gefesselt sind, sondern die den Luftkreis und das, was über ihm liegt bis zum Mond hinaus, durchmessen - und so weiter hinauf.
[ 21 ] Nun ist der Mensch auf unserer Erde in Entwickelung begriffen seit uralten Zeiten, und es geht in bezug auf den Menschen in seiner ganzen Entwickelung auf der Erde geradeso, wie es geht mit dem Verhältnis zwischen dem kleinen Kind und dem erwachsenen Menschen: Der letztere lehrt das kleine Kind. So geht es nun auch in bezug auf die Hierarchien im Weltenall. Der Mensch, der an die Erde gefesselt ist, kann sich erst nach und nach hinaufringen zu einer Erkenntnis, die er notwendig hat, zu den Geschicklichkeiten, die er notwendig hat auf der Erde. Die höheren Wesenheiten müssen ihn unterrichten. Was muß zu diesem Zweck geschehen? Es müssen in den Anfangszeiten des Erdendaseins solche Wesenheiten, die eigentlich sonst nicht an die Erde gefesselt sind, aus den höheren Sphären heruntersteigen. Und das geschieht wirklich! Wesenheiten, welchesonstnurzu leben brauchten im Umkreis der Erde, die müssen heruntersteigen, um dasjenige, was sie schon können als dieälteren, vollkommeneren Glieder der Hierarchie, den Menschen mitzuteilen. Sie müssen sich in menschlichen Körpern verkörpern - nicht zu ihrer eigenen Entwickelung, denn sie brauchen das nicht -, geradeso wie der erwachsene Mensch das Abc nicht zu seiner Entwickelung betreibt, sondern damit er das die Kinder lehren kann. So sehen wir zurück in die atlantische, in die lemurische Zeit, wo aus dem Umkreis der Erdeheruntersteigen Wesenheiten, diezu diesem Umkreis gehören, sich in Menschenleibern verkörpern und Lehrer der Menschen werden. Das sind Wesenheiten, die den höheren Hierarchien, denen von Merkur und Venus, angehören; die Venus- und Merkursöhne steigen herunter und werden die Lehrer der jungen Menschheit. So daß es in dieser jungen Menschheit solche Menschen gibt, die eigentlich Maja darstellen in ihrem Wandeln aufder Erde. Esgabsolche Menschen. Sagen wir einmal, um sie deutlich zu charakterisieren: Irgendein normal entwickelter Mensch der lemurischen Zeit begegnete einem solchen anderen Menschen. Äußerlich sah er nicht viel anders aus als die andern, aber in ihn war gleichsam hineingefahren ein Geist, dessen Gebiet bis zum Merkur oder bis zur Venus hinaufreichte. So stellte das Äußere eines solchen Menschen eigentlich eine Maja, eine Illusion dar. Er schaute nur so aus wie die anderen Menschen, war aber etwas ganz anderes: ein Merkur- oder ein Venussohn. Diese Erscheinung gibt es durchaus in der Morgenröte der menschlichen Entwickelung. Die Merkur- und Venussöhne stiegen herunter und wandelten so unter den Menschen, daß sie auch innerlich nun den Charakter hatten, den Merkur- und Venuswesen haben. Wir haben gesagt, daß die Venuswesen die Geister der Persönlichkeit sind. Solche Wesen wandelten als Menschen auf der Erde, die äußerlich eng begrenzte menschliche Persönlichkeiten waren, die aber in ihrer gewaltigen Macht die Menschheit lenkten. Das waren die großen Herrschaftsverhältnisse in der lemurischen Zeit, wo die Venussöhne lenkten die ganze Menschheit. Merkursöhne lenkten Teile der Menschheit; sie waren so mächtig wie jetzt diejenigen, die wir Völker- oder Rassengeister nennen.
[ 22 ] Maja oder Illusion ist nicht nur im allgemeinen in der Welt vorhanden, sondern auch in bezug auf den Menschen. Der Mensch, wie er vor uns steht, kann so aussehen, daß sein Aussehen eine Wahrheit ist, daß sein Äußeres seiner Seele genau entspricht, oder aber es ist eine Maja: In Wahrheit hat er eine Aufgabe, die entspricht der Aufgabe eines Merkur- oder Venussohnes. Das ist gemeint, wenn davon gesprochen wird, daß im Grunde genommen die führenden Individualitäten der alten Zeiten, so wie sie auf der Erde wandelten, mit ihrem gewöhnlichen Namen eine Maja vorstellen, und das hat H. P. Blavatsky gemeint, als sie darauf aufmerksam gemacht hat, daß die Buddhas eine Maja darstellen. Sie können dieses Wort selber finden in der «Geheimlehre». Diese Dinge stammen durchaus aus den Lehren der heiligen Mysterien; man muß sie nur verstehen.
[ 23 ] Nun obliegt es uns zunächst, zu fragen: Wie geschieht es denn, daß solch ein Venussohn heruntersteigt? Wie geschieht es, daß ein Bodhisattva auf der Erde leben kann? Die Wesenheit eines Bodhisattva, die Wesenheit von Merkur- und Venussöhnen, sie bildet ein wichtiges Kapitel in der Entwickelung unserer Erde in bezug auf ihren Zusammenhang mit dem Kosmos selber. Daher haben wir morgen zu betrachten die Natur der Merkur- und Venussöhne, der Bodhisattvas oder Dhyani-Buddhas.
Sixth Lecture
[ 1 ] Yesterday we saw how the facts of the cosmos arise from the spiritual life of the entities that stand above human beings. And in particular, an event such as the one we were able to cite yesterday at the end, the battle in the sky, which left so many corpses on the battlefield, so to speak, between Jupiter and Mars, that they are still found today in ever greater numbers as planetoids by physical science, precisely such an event must be of particular importance to us. And we will have to come back to it; we will see how this phenomenon in the sky is also reflected in certain processes of the evolution of the earth, and we will find the earthly reflection of this conflict in the sky right at the beginning of the Bhagavad Gita.
[ 2 ] Today, however, we want to continue our meditation by also briefly describing the other entities of the spiritual hierarchies, which we have already hinted at but left out yesterday. These are the entities that are actually closest to man when we ascend from man; they are called in Christian esotericism angels, archangels and primal beginnings or primal forces, thus angeloi, archangeloi, archai. The archangels are also called fire spirits according to the anthroposophical literature, and we can also call the primal beginnings spirits of personality.
[ 3 ] These entities, which, so to speak, stand between man and those spiritual entities, which we showed yesterday reaching in to Jupiter, Mars and so on, are of course also more closely related to man on earth itself. First of all, we have the Angeloi or angels. They passed through their stage of humanity during the ancient lunar evolution, and so, basically, during our present evolution on earth they have only progressed as far as man will during his Jupiter evolution. They stand one step above man. What then is the actual task of these spiritual beings? We will be able to visualize this task if we consider the evolution of man on earth.
[ 4 ] The human being develops from embodiment to embodiment. In the way human development is happening now, it goes back through the old Atlantean times, through the Lemurian times and actually begins in the old Lemurian times. And this development through incarnations will continue for a long time, until towards the end of the development of the earth, when other forms of human development will occur. Now you know that what we call the actual eternal core of the human being, the individuality, continues from incarnation to incarnation. But you also know that for the vast majority of people today there is still no awareness of life in previous embodiments, that people today do not remember what has happened to them in previous incarnations. Only those who have developed to a certain degree of clairvoyance look back on their previous incarnations.
[ 5 ] What kind of connection would there be between the incarnations of a person on earth who does not yet remember his previous embodiments, if it were not for certain entities that, so to speak, link the individual incarnations, watching over the further development from one incarnation to the next? For every human being we must assume the existence of an entity which, being one step higher than man, guides the individuality from one incarnation to another. Mind you, these are not the beings that regulate karma and to which we will return; these are simply watchful beings that preserve the memory from one incarnation to the next, so to speak, while the person himself cannot. And these beings are the angels or the archai. So we can say: Every person is a personality in every incarnation, but an entity watches over each person that has a consciousness that goes from incarnation to incarnation. That is also what makes it possible for a person to ask their angel for certain lower degrees of initiation, even if they themselves do not yet know about their previous embodiments. That is entirely possible for certain lower degrees of initiation. So we may say: the beings who, as angels, stand one step higher than man, they have to keep watch over the whole thread of humanity that is spun for the individual from embodiment to embodiment. Now we ascend to the next group of beings, to the archangels, archangeloi, to the fire spirits, as we also call them. These beings are not concerned with the individual human being, with the individual individuality, but have a more comprehensive task: they bring the life of the individual and the life of larger human contexts, such as peoples, races and so on, into a harmonious order. Within our earthly development, the archangels have the task, so to speak, of bringing the soul of the individual into a certain connection with what we call the soul of the people, the soul of the race. For someone who penetrates spiritual knowledge, national and racial souls are something quite different than for the abstractions of today's science or education in general. On any given territory, let's say in Germany or France or Italy, so and so many people live, and because the senses see only so and so many people as external forms, such abstractions can only imagine what is called the folk spirit or folk soul as a mere conceptual summary of the people. For them, only the individual human being is real, not the folk soul, not the folk spirit. For those who look into the real workings of spiritual life, what we call the soul or spirit of a people is a reality. There lives and moves in a national soul that which we call a fire spirit or an archangel. It regulates, so to speak, the relationship of the individual to the totality of a people or a race.
[ 6 ] And then we come up to the entities that we call spirits of personality, primordial beginnings, primordial forces, archai. These are even higher entities, they have an even higher task in the context of humanity. They basically regulate the earthly conditions of the whole human race on earth, and they live in such a way that they change from epoch to epoch in a very specific way through the waves of time, so to speak, taking on a different spiritual body. They all know something that is actually only a mere concept for the abstract people of our present-day education, but which is a reality for those who see into spiritual reality: it is what could be called the Zeitgeist, which is actually a rather ugly expression of our time. They have to do with the meaning and mission of an epoch of humanity. Just think, for example, that we can describe the meaning and mission of the first millennia immediately after the Atlantic catastrophe. These spirits of the age embrace something that goes beyond the individual people, beyond the individual race. The spirit of an epoch is not limited to this or that people, it crosses the borders of nations. That which is called the spirit of an epoch, the spirit of an epoch, is the spiritual body of the archai, the primal beginnings or spirits of personality. It is to be attributed to these spirits of personality, for example, that certain human personalities appear on our planet during certain epochs. You do understand, don't you, that earthly tasks must first be solved by earthly personalities. In a very specific epoch, this or that epoch-making personality had to appear. But there would be a strange confusion in the whole development of the earth if it were left to chance, if, for example, Luther or Charlemagne were placed in any epoch. This must be thought of in connection with the whole development of humanity over the earth; the right soul must arise, so to speak, out of the meaning of the whole development of the earth in a particular epoch. This is regulated by the spirits of personality, by the archai or primal beginnings.
[ 7 ] And then, when we go beyond the Primordial Beginnings, we come to the entities that we only just touched on yesterday, the so-called forces, exusiai, which we also call the spirits of form. Here we come to tasks that go beyond the earth. In the evolution of humanity, we distinguish between a Saturn evolution, a sun evolution, a moon, an earth, a Jupiter, a Venus and a Vulcan evolution. We have now seen that everything that happens within the earth itself is regulated by angels for the individual human being, and by archangels for the cohesion of the individual human being with large masses of people. For the development of humanity from the Lemurian period to the time when the human being will again be so spiritualized that he hardly belongs to the earth anymore, everything is regulated by the spirits of personality. But now something else has to be regulated: Humanity must be led from one planetary state to another. There must also be spiritual beings that, during the entire evolution of the Earth, ensure that when the evolution of the Earth is complete, humanity can pass through a pralaya in the right way and find the path to the next goal, the Jupiter goal. These are the Powers or Spirits of Form. Yesterday we characterized their task from above downwards, now we will characterize it from below upwards. Those spirits who ensure that, so to speak, all of humanity is led from one planetary state to another, these are the powers, exusiai or spirits of form.
[ 8 ] Now we need to gain some insight into the cosmic position of these beings. In spiritual science, in that which is to be continued today as anthroposophy, and which is basically the wisdom of the mysteries, these various beings of the spiritual hierarchies have always been spoken of in the same way as has been done here today. Yesterday we saw that Saturn signifies the point up to which the Thrones have had an effect, Jupiter signifies the point up to which the Lordships have had an effect, and Mars the point up to which the Powers or Dynamis or Virtues have had an effect.
[ 9 ] Now let us also characterize in a corresponding way how the domains of the entities mentioned today are spatially distributed in our solar system, so to speak. This will touch on a subject that may cause some consternation, even among those of you who are already prepared to a certain extent, but it is nevertheless entirely true. You see, in today's school teaching people are told that in gray antiquity, right up to Copernicus, there was a world view about our solar system that is known as the Ptolemaic system. At that time, it was believed that the Earth was at the center of our system, and that the planets moved around the Earth, as it appears to the eye. Since Copernicus, we finally know, so they say, what people earlier did not know, namely that the Sun is at the center and that the planets move in circles or in ellipses around the Sun. That's nice! But what should be made clear to people in particular in such a description of our solar system, when it is presented sincerely and honestly in today's sense, is something else. One should say: Up to Copernicus, people only knew certain forms of movement in space, and on that basis they calculated what our solar system might be like. What Copernicus did was not, so to speak, take a chair and into outer space to see how the sun is situated in some center of a circle or ellipse and the planets move around it, but he made a calculation, and this calculation explains more simply what is seen than previous calculations. The Copernican system is nothing more than a result of thought.
[ 10 ] Let us disregard Ptolemy's assumptions for a moment. Let us set up the calculation in such a way that the sun is at the center, calculate the locations of the individual planets, and then see if this calculation agrees with experience. Certainly, for purely physical observation, the calculation initially agrees with experience. Of course, all kinds of world systems, for example the Kant-Laplace system, were then built on this. But that was already the result of ongoing discoveries, which, in principle, is no longer entirely scientifically honest, because two planets were later added for purely sensory observation – we have not yet touched on them, but we will show later what they mean for our solar system, Uranus and Neptune. However, when describing this planetary system, one would have to point out to people that these two, Uranus and Neptune, actually throw a huge spanner in the works.
[ 11 ] If we want to accept the Kant-Laplacean system, then Uranus and Neptune would have to move with their moons in the same way as the other moons move around the other planets. But they do not, and among these outer planets, among these planets found later, we even have one that behaves quite strangely. For if the Kant-Laplace system is correct, then someone should have turned its axis by ninety degrees after all the planets had split off, because it makes a different orbit from the other planets. These two differ considerably from the other planets in our solar system. We shall see later what the situation is with them; for the moment we only want to point out that in the Copernican system we are dealing only with a calculation, with something that was hypothetically put forward as a premise at the time when people completely lost sight of an understanding of spiritual connections, of an observation of what underlies external events spiritually. But the old Ptolemaic system is not just a physical system; it is a system that goes back to spiritual observation, where it was known that the planets are markers for certain domains of the higher beings. And the whole system of our planet-sun system must be drawn differently if one now wants to characterize the domains in an appropriate way. I will draw this planetary system for you as it has been explained in the Mysteries of Zoroaster. We could just as easily consult other mysteries, but we want to pick out this system for the characteristics of our solar system with its planets in relation to the spiritual beings active within this system.
[ 12 ] In the system of Zarathustra, something was incorporated that differs from what our celestial observations are. You know, of course, that over the course of many years a certain progression of the sun through the zodiac can be observed. It is usually said, and correctly so, that since about the 8th century before our era the sun rises in spring at the vernal point in the zodiac sign 1Here and in the following, the signs are not meant in the usual sense, but the images. of Aries; but every year the sun moves a little further, so that over long, long periods of time it passes through the whole of Aries with its point of rising. Before the year 800 BC, it did not rise in Aries, but in Taurus, and for 2200 years it rose in Taurus, passing through the whole sign of Taurus with its vernal point. Before that, it was in the sign of Gemini. Gemini was the spring zodiac constellation in the periods that lie 800 years before our era plus approximately 2200 years. If we go back to the 4th and 5th millennium BC, we find that the vernal point was in the sign of Gemini. But that was the time when the mysteries of Zarathustra flourished. They flourished far into the distant past, and when people spoke of celestial phenomena, they referred to everything in terms of the constellation of Gemini. So that if we were to draw the zodiac, as we already characterized it yesterday, we would have to draw the constellation of Gemini at the top here. It would then have to be drawn immediately following the zodiac, bordering the realm of the thrones, which thus has Saturn as its boundary mark. Then we come to the boundary of the domain of the spiritual beings called the Lords or Spirits of Wisdom; the outermost mark is Jupiter. We then come to the boundary of the domain of the Powers, also called the Spirits of Movement: this is the domain that has the mark of Mars. We have seen that the battlefield, which the conflict in the heavens has left behind, falls in between. But now, if we want to properly divide the domains, we have to draw what has the Sun as its boundary mark. So, just as we draw Mars as the boundary up to which the domain of the powers extends, we have to draw the Sun itself as the mark that denotes the boundary up to which the forces or spirits of form extend. And now we come to the boundary that we denote by the mark of Venus. The domain of the spirits of personality or archai extends as far as Venus. Then we come to the domain that we denote with the mark of Mercury. So the domain of the spirits of personality extends as far as Venus; the domain of those beings whom we call the archangels or fire spirits extends as far as Mercury. And now we are getting very close to the earth. We can now describe the dominion that has the moon as its mark, and now we come to draw the earth here.
[ 13 ] So you have to imagine the Earth as the starting point, then around the Earth a dominion that extends to the Moon; then comes a dominion that extends to Mercury, then a dominion to Venus, then one to the Sun. Now you will be amazed at the order of the individual planets, as I have given them. If the Earth is here and the Sun here, you would think that I should draw Mercury here in solar proximity and Venus here. But that is not correct, because the two planets were confused with regard to their names by later astronomy. What is called Mercury today is called Venus in all ancient teachings, and what is called Venus today is called Mercury in all ancient teachings. So, mind you: you don't understand the old scriptures and the old teachings if you relate what is said there about Venus or Mercury to what is meant by the same names today. What is said about Venus must be related to today's Mercury, and what is said about Mercury to Venus, because these two designations were later confused with each other. When the world system was turned upside down, when the Earth was stripped of its central position, not only was the perspective changed, but Mercury and Venus were made to collide in relation to the old designations.
[ 14 ] Now you will be able to easily reconcile what is recorded here with the physical world system. You just have to imagine: here is the sun ☉, around the sun revolves Venus ♀; further around the sun revolves Mercury ☿, then the earth ♁ with the moon ☾; Mars ♂, Jupiter ♃, then Saturn ♄. You have to imagine the physical movements in such a way that each planet moves around the sun. But you can imagine such a position that the earth is standing here, so to speak, and that the other planets have turned so that they are standing behind the sun on their path. So if I want to draw that, it would be like this: we draw our usual physical system. We draw the sun in one focus, and let Venus, Mercury, Earth with its moon go around the sun: that is the Earth, Mercury, Venus according to the old designation, the next one that follows is Mars, the next one after the planetoids is Jupiter, and then comes Saturn. You now imagine that while the Earth is at the bottom, Mercury and Venus come, then Mars is at the top, Jupiter is there and so on. Now you have the Sun, Mercury, Venus here. Isn't it so, that since these planets take up all possible positions in relation to each other, they can also be in this position (see drawing S5. 101, bottom). That will be plausible. Herewith the present physical system is drawn, only one point in time is chosen, where the Earth, Mercury and Venus are on one side of the Sun, the other planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are on the other side. That is drawn here, nothing more. Here is Earth, Mercury, Venus, and on the other side of the Sun Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. So it is only a change of perspective. This system is quite conceivable, but only when this constellation is present. It was actually present at a time when Gemini was above Saturn. With clairvoyance, one could particularly well observe the relationships of the spiritual hierarchies. It showed that around the Earth, all the way to the Moon, is the sphere of the angels. Truly, if one does not take the physical system as a basis, but rather this peculiar constellation, then around the Earth is the circle of the angels, all the way to the Moon; then, all the way to Mercury, is the circle of the archangels; then, all the way to Venus, is the circle of the spirits of the personality; then, as far as the Sun, first the circle of the Powers or Exusiai, or Spirits of Form; then comes the circle, as I characterized it yesterday, of the Virtues or Forces, then the circle of the Dominations, and then that of the Thrones (see diagram).
[ 15 ] So when we speak of the Copernican and Ptolemaic world systems, it is important to be clear about the fact that in the Ptolemaic system something of the constellation of ruling spirits has been left behind, and there we have to take the earth as the starting point of the perspective. A future will come when this world system will be correct again because man will know about the spiritual world again. Hopefully, people will be less fanatical than they are today. Our present age says: the people before Copernicus talked nonsense, they all had a primitive world system. Since Copernicus we finally know the truth, and everything else is wrong, and until the most infinite times, even if it takes millions of years, this will of course be taught because the Copernican system is the right one. That is more or less how people think and talk today. There has hardly ever been a population as superstitious as the present-day astronomical theorists, and there has hardly ever been such great fanaticism as in this field. Future generations will hopefully be more tolerant and will say: From the 15th, 16th century onwards, people had lost the awareness that there is a spiritual world and that one has different perspectives in the spiritual world, that one must arrange the heavenly bodies differently than when one observes them merely physically. This was present before, afterwards came the time when people only looked at the arrangement of the heavenly bodies physically. That's all very well, people of the future will say, from the 16th century onwards that was quite right. For a while, people had to let go of everything that exists in the spiritual world, but then they remembered again that there is a spiritual world, and then they returned to the original spiritual perspective. - Hopefully, people in the future will understand that astronomical mythology was once possible, not only other mythologies, and will not look at our time with the same disdain that people of the present look at their ancestors in their superstition.
[ 16 ] We see, then, that the Copernican system differs from all that went before simply because only physical conceptions were taken into account. Before that, spiritual conceptions still remained as remnants in the Ptolemaic system. But only by taking this other world system into consideration can we form any idea at all of the rule and activity of spiritual beings within our solar-planetary system. We express the spiritual conditions by saying: the Angels rule up to the Moon, the Archangels rule up to Mercury, the Spirits of Personality rule up to Venus, the Powers rule up to the Sun, and the Dominations rule up to Mars. Then come the entities that we call dominions, and finally the thrones. We therefore only need to draw other lines into the physical system, and then we have the domains of the hierarchies demarcated in these lines. For the spiritual activities, it is not our sun that is at the center of the system, but the earth. Therefore, all ages in which the essential thing was placed in spiritual development have said: Certainly, the sun is a more noble heavenly body for my sake; on it entities have developed that stand higher than man; but what matters in evolution is man, who lives on earth. And when the sun has separated, it has done so so that man can develop in the right way. If the sun had remained united with the earth, man would never have been able to advance at the right pace. This was only possible because the sun went away with those beings that can tolerate quite different conditions. You might say that the sun left the earth alone so that man could then set his pace of development.
[ 17 ] A world system becomes one way or the other, depending on the starting point, the perspective. If, within our world system, we ask where the center lies in relation to what can be seen in purely physical terms, then it is a Copernican world system! If we ask about the arrangement of our solar system, which emanates from the domains of the spiritual hierarchies, then we still have to place the earth in the center, then we get other boundary lines, then the planets are something completely different, namely boundary markers for the domains of the individual spiritual hierarchies.
[ 18 ] And now you will easily be able to relate what has just been said about the spatial distribution of the individual domains to what was said earlier about the task and mission of the individual entities. Those entities that are closest to the earth, that are active in the immediate vicinity of the earth, so to speak, up to the moon, are the angels. From this sphere they direct the life of the individual from incarnation to incarnation. On the other hand, it takes more to distribute entire masses of people on earth in an appropriate way and to assign them their mission. A simple consideration shows that the cosmos must also be involved. It really does depend not only on earthly but also on cosmic conditions whether the character of any population is inclined in one way or another. Just think of the fact that one race with different, let us say, skin and hair conditions works differently than another race - cosmic conditions are involved, conditions that have to be regulated from the heavens. This happens from a realm of power that extends to Mercury, to the boundary of the archangels' sphere of influence. And then, if all of humanity, as it develops on Earth, is to be guided and directed, then this must come from even further cosmic space, from a cosmic space that extends up to Venus. But if the task of the Earth itself is to be guided and directed, then this must come from the center of the entire system.
[ 19 ] I have told you: Our humanity develops through Saturn, Sun, Moon, Earth, Jupiter, Venus and Vulcan. The beings of the spiritual hierarchy who direct the mission of humanity from one planet to another, these are the authorities, the spirits of form. They must be in a select place; their domain extends right up to the sun. The sun was already there as a special body alongside the old moon; it is now there again alongside the earth and will also be alongside Jupiter. Their domain extends beyond the individual planets. Therefore, the existence of the sun must be connected with those spiritual beings whose domain also extends beyond the individual planets. In this respect, the sun is indeed an exceptional body, in that it extends to the domain that extends beyond the individual planets. So you see that we actually find the outer circle of space, the outer dwelling place of the hierarchies, not so much on the individual planets as in the circles that are bounded by the planets as by marks. If you imagine the whole circumference from the earth to the moon, it is filled with the activity of angels, and the circumference from the earth to Mercury is filled with the activity of the archangels, and so on.
[ 20 ] So we are dealing with spheres of space, and the planets are the marks, the boundary stones for these spatial effects of the higher beings. We see, then, that we have to seek, as it were, a continuous line of perfection from man upwards. Man himself is chained to the earth; that which passes from one incarnation to another as an eternal entity is guided by beings who are not only chained to the earth, but who traverse the atmosphere and that which lies above it as far as the moon, and so on upwards.
[ 21 ] Now man on our earth has been developing since ancient times, and in terms of man's overall development on earth, it is the same as it is in the relationship between a small child and an adult: the latter teaches the former. This is also how it is in relation to the hierarchies in the universe. A man chained to the earth can only gradually struggle upwards to the knowledge he needs, to the skills he needs on earth. The higher beings must teach him. What must happen for this purpose? In the early days of earthly existence, such beings, who are not otherwise chained to the earth, must descend from the higher spheres. And this really happens! Entities that would otherwise only have to live in the vicinity of the earth must descend in order to communicate to people what they can already do as the older, more perfect members of the hierarchy. They must embody themselves in human bodies – not for their own development, because they do not need that – just as an adult does not learn the alphabet for his own development, but so that he can teach it to children. So we look back to the Atlantean, to the Lemurian period, where entities belonging to that environment descend from the periphery of the earth, embody themselves in human bodies and become teachers of humanity. These are entities that belong to the higher hierarchies, those of Mercury and Venus; the Venus and Mercury Sons descend and become the teachers of young humanity. So that there are people in this young humanity who actually represent Maja in their walk on earth. There are such people. Let us say, to characterize them clearly: some normally developed person of the Lemurian time encountered such another person. Outwardly he did not look much different from the others, but a spirit had entered into him, whose sphere reached up to Mercury or Venus. Thus, the outer appearance of such a human being actually represented a maya, an illusion. He only looked like the other people, but was something completely different: a Mercury or Venus son. This phenomenon certainly exists in the dawn of human evolution. The Mercury and Venus Sons descended and walked among people in such a way that they also had the inner character of Mercury and Venus beings. We have said that the Venus beings are the spirits of personality. Such beings walked the earth as human beings, who were outwardly limited human personalities, but who guided humanity in their mighty power. These were the great power relations in the Lemurian period, when the Venus Sons ruled all humanity. Mercury Sons ruled parts of humanity; they were as powerful as those we now call ethnic or racial spirits.
[ 22 ] Maja, or illusion, is not only present in the world in general, but also in relation to man. Man, as he stands before us, can look in such a way that his appearance is a truth, that his outer appearance corresponds exactly to his soul, or else it is a maja: in truth he has a task that corresponds to the task of a Mercury or Venus son. This is meant when it is said that basically the leading individualities of ancient times, as they walked the earth, with their ordinary name, represent a maja, and this is what H. P. Blavatsky meant when she pointed out that the Buddhas represent a maja. You can find this word yourself in The Secret Doctrine. These things are definitely from the teachings of the Sacred Mysteries; one just has to understand them.
[ 23 ] Now it behooves us to ask: how does it happen that such a Venus Son descends? How is it possible for a Bodhisattva to live on earth? The entity of a Bodhisattva, the entity of Mercury and Venus Sons, forms an important chapter in the development of our earth in relation to the cosmos itself. Therefore, tomorrow we will consider the nature of Mercury and Venus Sons, the Bodhisattvas or Dhyani Buddhas.
