181. A Sound Outlook for Today and a Genuine Hope for the Future: Problems of the Time II 06 Aug 1918, Berlin
Translator Unknown

The meeting with the Guardian of the Threshold is fraught with tragedy; it is a vital conflict as regards all intellectual concepts and laws, all man's connections with this virtual world and with Ahriman and Lucifer. This life-and-death struggle must be endured by him who would meet the Guardian of the Threshold.
251. The History of the Anthroposophical Society 1913–1922: On the Character of the Present Day 21 May 1922, Berlin

What the brains and etheric bodies are for us, the elemental spirits are for Ahriman; he waits until they place themselves at his disposal. But he has them as his brain and as his heart, which has become a leather bag.
But just as when man disregards the irruption of spirituality into our time, then the world of the lower elementary beings connects with the Ahrimanic beings that are hostile to human development, so the luciferic If the forces of Lucifer, which can take hold of everything that is human will and feeling, combine with the ahrimanic beings that are hostile to human development, then these forces of Lucifer will snatch this element from the air and water beings and, as beings of Lucifer, will carry it into the ether.
And from what I have described, a combined rule over the earthly of Ahriman and Lucifer would arise. The only way to escape this is for people to gain a new understanding of Christ, a new understanding of the mystery of Golgotha, through the incoming spiritual wave.
157. Esoteric Development: The Three Decisions on the Path of Imaginative Cognition 02 Mar 1915, Berlin
Translated by Gertrude Teutsch, Olin D. Wannamaker, Diane Tatum, Alice Wuslin

But there, at first quite invisible to one, stands the power whom we have always called Ahriman. One does not see him. And it is Ahriman who hinders us from seeing that which I have described as the germinating thought-being.
And this fierce dragon we must truly perceive. But now Lucifer and Ahriman together try to make it imperceptible to our spiritual vision. If we do perceive it, however, we realize that in reality this fierce dragon has most fundamentally to do with ourselves, for he is woven out of those instincts and sensations which are related to what in ordinary life we call our “lowest nature.”
He is far from beautiful and it is therefore easy for Lucifer and Ahriman so to influence our subconscious life of soul that unconsciously we do not want to see this dragon.
157. The Destinies of Individuals and of Nations: Lecture VIII 02 Mar 1915, Berlin
Translated by Anna R. Meuss

There, however, stands the potentate we have always been calling Ahriman, though at first he will be quite invisible to man. We do not see him. And it is Ahriman who makes sure we do not see the thought entity taking the form I have described to you.
And we must take a proper look at this wild dragon. But now Lucifer and Ahriman will together make every effort to make the dragon invisible, to hide it from our spiritual vision.
It is far from beautiful, that dragon, and this makes it easy for Lucifer and Ahriman to influence our unconscious soul life and get us to a point where unconsciously we do not want to know about seeing the dragon.
184. The Polarity of Duration and Development: Fourth Lecture 13 Sep 1918, Dornach

Here we come to the Luciferic, which is the opposite pole to the Ahrimanic. Today's man is ashamed to speak of Ahriman and Lucifer, while he is not ashamed to speak of positive or negative electricity or positive or negative magnetism.
If we were dependent on our human nature without the working of Ahriman, our intellect would be quite differently ordered in the present day. The Roman Catholic Church could be terribly satisfied with humanity if it had only the measure of intellect that grows out of human nature today.
174a. Central Europe Between East and West: Eleventh Lecture 02 May 1918, Munich

If it remains united with the person outside of consciousness, it will either turn into Luciferic or Ahrimanic forces, and will gradually be handed over to Ahriman or Lucifer. But for a long time, our Western cultural development has reckoned with Luciferic forces, and now, through a particularly esteemed spiritual current, it is preparing to reckon with Ahrimanic forces and to live with them.
The characteristic of these things, which are really praised today as a special achievement of humanity – and the most courageous educators devote all their energy to these aptitude tests – is that in this way one does not approach the soul at all, but only tests what ahrimanic rests in his physicality, that in this way one only tests how strongly Ahriman can develop through one or the other young person. What will be introduced into human culture in this way will be the ahrimanic impulses.
203. Social Life: Lecture III 29 Jan 1921, Dornach
Translator Unknown

Then appears the inclination in man which hinders him from oscillating in the right way in the future between Earthly life and Spiritual life, between death and rebirth. What lies in the striving of Ahriman is, to hold man back in such a way that he cannot in his next incarnation pass in the right way through earthly life and super-earthly life, Ahriman wants to keep humanity back from undergoing any future incarnations.
In this decadent life in the East (I have often told you how this Eastern civilisation came to its decadence)—in this decadent life in the East Ahriman can especially produce this confusion. In the East, the people are more ruled inwardly by the Luciferic powers, therefore Ahriman can attack their being from outside; and just because they are inwardly governed by Lucifer, therefore Ahriman can fill them with a desire to conclude their life on Earth in a particular nation, no longer wanting to appear within a physical body.
The Earth would be a colony of these separate individual human souls. That is what Ahriman is striving for with the Earth—to make it simply an expression of this intellectuality, to completely intellectualise the Earth.
14. Four Mystery Plays: Persons, Figures and Events

BEINGS FROM THE SPIRIT WORLD: Lucifer. Ahriman. Gnomes. Sylphs. BEINGS OF THE ELEMENT OF HUMAN SPIRIT: Philia, Astrid, & Luna, The spiritual beings through whose agency the human soul-forces are connected with the cosmos.
The Soul of Ferdinand Fox in the realm of Ahriman (Scene 12). He appears as Ferdinand Fox only in ‘The Guardian of the Threshold.’ The personalities of Benedictus and Maria also appear as mental experiences, to wit: In the second scene as those of Johannes Thomasius, in the third scene as those of Strader.
208. Cosmosophy Vol. II: Lecture III 23 Oct 1921, Dornach

When people give their inner life to this science, Ahriman unites with them through it. Lucifer has a hand above all in the sphere of the arts; Ahriman has a hand in the development of mechanics, technology, anything that seeks to take the human intellect away from people and put it into machine tools and also the machinery of government.
Materialistic science and industrial technology would condemn humanity to earthly death, that is, they would craft a completely different world in which human beings live on as a kind of petrified fossils for the edification of ahrimanic spirits, and this will happen unless spiritual understanding of Christ spreads through the mechanization of our age. We are thus able to say that Lucifer has a hand in all traditional theology, all art that is stiff and mannered, anything by way of renaissance; Ahriman has a hand in all materialistic science divorced from the realm of the spirit and unable to find the spirit in the world of nature, and in all aspects of human activity that are mechanical and without inwardness.
People should really find a list of things to be done on their pillow when they wake up in the morning and carry it all out mechanically, thinking only with their legs, as it were and not their heads. Lucifer wants them to use their heads and pour their hearts into their heads; Ahriman seeks to make people think only with their legs, pour everything into the legs.
26. Anthroposophical Leading Thoughts: The Michael-Christ-Experience of Man
Translated by George Adams, Mary Adams

Man goes on his way through the Cosmos in such manner that his looking back into past ages can be falsified by the impulses of Lucifer, and his thinking into the future deceived by the allurements of Ahriman. [ 21 ] 116. To the falsifying influences of Lucifer he finds the right relation when he imbues his attitude to life and knowledge with the Being and the Mission of Michael.
Moreover, in so doing he provides against the allurements of Ahriman. For the path of the Spirit into external Nature, which Michael inspires, leads to a right relation to the domain of Ahriman, inasmuch as a true and living experience with Christ is also found thereby.
