130. Esoteric Christianity and the Guiding Spirits of Humanity: The Seven Principles of the Macrocosm and Their Connection with the Human Being 28 Nov 1911, Stuttgart

Rudolf Steiner
In the human being, this occurs through the formation of the first ego germ. The first direct, real influence in our time occurred in the Revelation on Mount Sinai, where the Christ revealed Himself to Moses under the name of Jahve or Jehovah.
90a. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge I: Picture of the Development on the Moon and on the Earth 29 Dec 1904, Berlin

Rudolf Steiner
This layer of wisdom is cher a sphere that permeates everything, permeated with threads, and at the intersections something like a knot arises, that is an ego. Thoughts run through the entire sphere, like a collective nervous system, a manasic network.
90a. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge I: Past and Future Rounds 30 Dec 1904, Berlin

Rudolf Steiner
Because he is a mineral being, he recognizes himself as an ego. In the next round, he will be able to say, “I will and form plastically.” In the sixth round, he will be able to say, “I feel myself,” and he will pour out his entire being in wavy lines, his word.
63. Theosophy and Anti-sophy 06 Nov 1913, Berlin

Rudolf Steiner
1762-1814, German philosopher) tries to outline the nature of the human ego with sharp lines of thought, he gets a mood from quite different lines of thought as they are explained here which crystallised in the words: the human being who experiences himself in his ego really experiences himself in the spiritual world.
There he summarises again that about which he had thought very much and that appears like a theosophical mood in the words: if I have recognised myself in my ego, being within the spiritual world, then I have also recognised myself in my vocation! We would say, I have found the point where it is connected in its own being with the roots of the world being.
139. The Gospel of St. Mark: Lecture II 16 Sep 1912, Basel
Tr. Conrad Mainzer, Stewart C. Easton

Rudolf Steiner
But at present one thing only may be pointed out by way of introduction, which has often been referred to in our lectures when they touched on similar subjects, namely, that the full consciousness of the human ego, which it is the mission of the earth planet to develop and bring to expression, actually made its appearance only through the Mystery of Golgotha.
When they were reincarnated in the post-Christian era, they had to face the necessity of experiencing the ego-consciousness. This passing over from the group-soul nature to the experience of the individual soul causes a mighty leap forward.
He speaks now of a heavenly super-sensible element, the ego, and it is necessary to emphasize this. He calls them sons of thunder to show that those who are His followers are related to the celestial element.
132. Evolution in the Aspect of Realities: Inner Aspect of the Earth-Embodiment of the Earth 05 Dec 1911, Berlin
Tr. Unknown

Rudolf Steiner
For when we look at a corpse left behind in the world of Maya, we know that it consists of nothing but matter which at the moment of death, was shut out from the Ego, astral body, and etheric body, alienated from that within which alone it had a meaning. The physical body without the etheric body, astral body, and Ego has no meaning, it is purposeless; at that moment it is excluded from its purpose.
If again we were to ascend higher—from man to the Beings of the Higher Hierarchies—we should find that they do not know death in the human sense; so that in reality actual death, that is death on the physical plane, comes only to those beings who have to acquire something on that plane. Now man has to acquire his ego-consciousness there. Without death he could never find it. Neither with respect to the beings below man in rank, nor to those higher than man, is there any meaning in speaking of actual death.

134. The World of the Senses and the World of the Spirit: Lecture II 28 Dec 1911, Hanover
Tr. Unknown

Rudolf Steiner
In the night there flow to us from the universe, coming to us by way of our ego and astral body, the currents that we need to dispel fatigue. There you have in actual fact the living connection between the worlds of will and of wisdom and the physical and etheric bodies of man. For into these worlds vanish during sleep the astral body and ego. They enter into these worlds and build there centres of attraction for substances which have then to flow out of the world of wisdom into the etheric body and out of the world of will into the physical body.
Then tremendous disturbances would be set up in the physical and etheric bodies by the forces man's ego and astral body would send into them out of the world of ruling wisdom and the world of ruling will.
124. Background to the Gospel of St. Mark: Rosicrucian Wisdom in Folk-Mythology 10 Jun 1911, Berlin
Tr. E. H. Goddard, Dorothy S. Osmond

Rudolf Steiner
The degree of development that is possible to-day and can give strength, assurance and a genuine content to life is within our reach if we acquire knowledge of the manifold nature of man and realise that his constitution is not a haphazard medley but consists of physical body, etheric body, astral body and Ego. We have formulated definite ideas, for example of the temperaments, by studying the process of education and the development of the physical body up to the seventh year, of the etheric body up to the fourteenth and of the astral body up to the twenty-first year.
These minstrels did not speak about theosophy, about the lower and higher Ego, about man's physical, etheric and astral bodies and so on. As they moved around the land their mission was to speak of the spirit in the way it was wont to be proclaimed at that time.
The physical body has existed since the evolutionary period of Old Saturn, the etheric body since the period of Old Sun, and the astral body since the period of Old Moon. The Ego, the ‘I’, has been embodied in men in the course of the Earth period itself. Julius Mosen depicts Ritter Wahn seeking to overcome death.
130. Jeshu ben Pandira: Lecture One 04 Nov 1911, Leipzig
Tr. Olin D. Wannamaker

Rudolf Steiner
And the final epoch, that of the moral impulse will be that in which the human beings who shall have passed through the other stages will behold the Christ in His glory, as the form of the greatest "Ego," as the spiritualized Ego-Self, as the great Teacher of human evolution in the higher Devachan. Thus the succession is as follows: In the Graeco-Latin epoch Christ appeared on the physical plane; in our epoch He will appear as an etheric form on the astral plane; in the next epoch as an astral form on the plane of lower Devachan; and in the epoch of morality as the very essence and embodiment of the Ego.
